UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed the Rome-based agencies (FAO, IFAD, WFP) to coordinate the UN System’s participation in Expo Milano 2015 under the leadership of the FAO Director-General.

This exercise is proving to be another successful example of the UN “Delivering as One”, by increasing the coherence and effectiveness of UN operations through teamwork. 20 UN agencies or entities and important partners such as Bioversity International are participating in Expo Milano 2015.

United we can build a world within our lifetimes where all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food and lead healthy and productive lives, without compromising the needs of future generations.

This concept is summed up in the Zero Hunger Challenge launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. The UN brought this vision to Expo Milano 2015, demonstrating to visitors how it is possible to end hunger in our lifetime, how this can only be achieved if we work together and how they can and need to be part of the solution.

In addition to the 5 elements of Ban Ki-moon’s Zero Hunger Challenge, we focus on women’s empowerment and gender equality at Expo Milano 2015, an integral part of each element of the Challenge.

UN-EXPO LOGO

8

The UN logo for Expo Milano 2015 connects three main elements: the theme for UN participation in Expo 2015, “The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world”, the Organization and the event. The blue and green colours recall planet Earth and also relate to Expo’s and the UN’s theme of sustainability. The blue of the “UN” makes the Organization immediately identifiable for Expo’s visitors. Furthermore, the striking shades of green and blue produce a clear visual identity aimed at achieving the level of visibility required to link UN content spread throughout the site at Expo 2015.

UN-Expo symbol: blue spoon

Within the UN-Expo logo, the letter “O” is transformed into a zero through the position of the spoon. Each of these symbols - the zero, the spoon and the letter “O” - are directly connected with the Zero Hunger Challenge.

The spoon is the symbol of the UN’s presence at Expo Milano 2015. When talking about food, nutrition and the challenge of feeding the world, the spoon is a tool common to all food traditions, demonstrating how the Zero Hunger Challenge belongs to each and every one of us.

UN ITINERARY

10

Given the strong synergy between the theme of Expo Milano 2015 and the mission of the United Nations, a new type of participation model has been proposed by the host country. For the first time in the history of World Expositions, the UN does not have a pavilion but instead a horizontal presence with content spread throughout the Expo site. This opportunity to exhibit and simultaneously interact with visitors throughout the entire Expo 2015 site provides greater visibility for the UN System, its activities, important goals and challenges, and best practices in fields related to the theme. It also offers the Expo a chance to include global content on key issues related to food and nutrition throughout the Thematic Areas.

A UN itinerary connects content, from Pavilion Zero – where the link between Expo’s theme and the mission of the UN is most evident– through the UN Garden, the Biodiversity Park, the Children’s Park, the Future Food District, the nine Clusters, country pavilions, the civil society area (Cascina Triulza) and other areas of the Expo site.

UN spaces in Expo Milano’s main thematic areas are easily recognisable through their giant blue spoons. By visiting the UN spaces visitors are able to discover through videos, photo stories, infographics and maps how the UN System strives daily to eradicate hunger and guarantee a sustainable future for our planet. Visitors can also find out how to take part in the Challenge of getting to Zero.

A prototype of the UN installation for Expo Milano 2015 was unveiled at FAO by the Italian Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina and the Director-General of FAO José Graziano da Silva on 20 November 2014 during the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2).

The UN installations were designed by the non-profit organization “Architetti senza Frontiere” (Architects without Borders) and developed by Cinecittà, winner of the Expo S.p.A. tender. The Expo Construction Team is responsible for the logistics and maintenance of the UN spaces.

In addition to featuring widely throughout Expo’s Thematic Areas and Clusters, some countries have also included one of the UN installations in their pavilion.

EAST ENTRANCE

12

Visitors accessing the Expo Milano 2015 site through the East Entrance are faced immediately by the Mediterranean Hill, an area comprising the most typical vegetation and cultures of the Mediterranean ecosystem, managed by Expo and Slow Food. The top of the hill offers a striking view of the entire exposition site.

The UN installation inside the East Entrance introduces the first element of the Zero Hunger Challenge, addressing how one of the key steps in eradicating hunger involves putting an end to stunting in children under two years. Visitors discover how the right nutrition during the first one thousand days of a baby’s life can have a profound impact on a child’s ability to grow, learn, and rise out of poverty. Today, one in four children (161 million) are chronically malnourished or “stunted” and in order to get to Zero, a number of issues will need to be tackled including health care assistance, access to clean water, sanitation, education and specific nutrition interventions, coupled with initiatives that enable the empowerment of women.

DECUMANO

Like many modern and ancient Roman cities, Expo Milano 2015 is set along 2 main streets - the Cardo and the Decumano – that intersect at the Piazza Italia. The main street, the Decumano, connects the whole site from east to west covering a distance of 1.5 kilometres. Country pavilions are based on both sides of the Decumano. The Italian pavilion is located along the entire length of the Cardo.

The UN spoon installation on the Eastern end of the Decumano explores the second element of the Zero Hunger Challenge - 100% access to adequate food all year round. This can only be achieved through nutrition-sensitive agriculture, more inclusive food systems, marketing, decent and productive employment, social protection floors, targeted safety nets, food assistance and by boosting food supply from local producers. It also depends on open, fair and well-functioning markets and trade policies at local, regional and international levels that prevent excessive food price volatility.

BIODIVERSITY PARK

16

Expo’s Biodiversity Park is composed of open spaces displaying a variety of plants, which together represent agricultural and natural biodiversity in Italy. It also includes a theater and two pavilions, one dedicated to organic and natural products and the other housing the biodiversity exhibition. Visitors are able to look at, smell, touch and sometimes taste the plants through a range of interactive activities that explore the importance of both food and non-food plants. They are also able to find out about different agricultural techniques and methods, including organic practices.

http://bit.ly/14ztCL1

The UN spoon installation in the Biodiversity Park represents the third element of the Zero Hunger Challenge and addresses how all food systems need to be sustainable in order to eradicate hunger. Visitors learn how every aspect of the food system has an effect on the final availability of and accessibility to diverse and nutritious foods – and therefore on consumers’ ability to choose healthy diets. The installation introduces the steps necessary in achieving sustainable food systems including the establishment of global and national standards for sustainability and cross-sectoral policy coherence (energy, land use, water and climate), using sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture practices and ensuring the responsible governance of land, fisheries and forests. A series of success stories demonstrate the work being done by the UN to promote and strengthen sustainability initiatives worldwide.

FUTURE FOOD DISTRICT

The Future Food District (#FFD) introduces visitors to innovative ways of applying new technologies at every step of the food chain. It also encourages them to reflect on how food is produced, distributed, prepared and consumed today and how this may evolve in the future.

In a futuristic supermarket, visitors are producers and consumers at the same time. In the Kitchen, with the help of professional chefs, visitors are able to cook using smart technologies. The area emphasizes how only through a solid information network will we be able to interact more with products and producers and develop a greater awareness of what we consume.

The UN installation in the Future Food District stresses a fundamental step in ensuring food security for all, by introducing the fourth element of the Zero Hunger Challenge: 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income. Multimedia materials talk about the 2.5 billion people involved in smallholder agriculture worldwide that provide over 80 percent of the food consumed in some developing countries. It examines how the support of smallholder production through decent working conditions, responsible and accountable investments and improved access to land and natural resources is a crucial component in the fight against poverty and hunger.

The largest outdoor space open to visitors at Expo is the Lake Arena, where the “Tree of Life”, inspired by Michelangelo’s Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, stands at the centre of an artificial lake. Surrounded by an area that can seat up to 3,000 people, and an open space that can accommodate 20,000 more, the area hosts water games, firework shows, concerts, artistic performances on floating platforms and other events.

www.expo2015.org/en/explore/

exhibition-site/lake-arena

The UN spoon installation based at the Lake Arena is dedicated to the fifth element of the Zero Hunger Challenge: Zero loss or waste of food. A series of videos, infographics, maps and posters explore how one third of all food produced every year (1.3 billion tons) is lost or wasted and provide information on the UN’s efforts to reduce and eradicate loss or waste of food. This includes projects for greater pest control, improved storage facilities and more efficient supply chains. The UN also strives to raise awareness of the huge amount of food thrown away by households, the retail and catering industries, which releases significant quantities of powerful greenhouse gases.

A typical historical farm house from the Lombardy region, known as the Cascina Triulza and already located on the Expo 2015 site, has been completely renovated to accommodate the Civil Society Pavilion. The area is managed by a group of national and international organizations, the Triulza Foundation, together with Expo organisers. In addition to the non-profit sector, it involves international organizations, public institutions and companies, who showcase and promote best practices and successful initiatives developed in partnership with civil society organizations. Several different spaces are available for exhibitions, events, markets, and networking for professionals.

The UN spoon installation in the Cascina Triulza is dedicated to the UN’s focus area on women’s empowerment and gender equality, an integral part of each of the five elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge. Various materials show how despite the fact that women produce much of the world’s food, they are often denied access to productive resources and opportunities and how for example, with greater access, over 1.1 billion women farmers could produce 20-30% more food, enough to lift 150 million out of hunger.

The Children’s Park is a space where children can explore Expo’s theme, particularly the topic of sustainability, in a fun and educational way. Children feel immersed in a world that is both natural and fantastical while they explore the complex topic of life on Planet Earth. The area has been created by the Reggio Children team, an International Centre for the protection and promotion of children’s rights and their potential.

www.expo2015.org/en/children-park

Based at the entrance to the Children’s Park, the UN spoon installation displays a series of fun and interesting multimedia material for children. The UN-Expo team has worked closely with UNICEF and children’s illustrator Lorenzo Terranera to interpret the Zero Hunger Challenge in a language that is stimulating for children. In addition, a special edition of educational cartoons on Young Leonardo da Vinci, developed by UNESCO in partnership with the Alcuni Group and Rai, are shown in the Children’s Park and at the UN installation.

The UN spoon installation in the Islands, Sea and Food Cluster looks into the interesting livelihoods of island inhabitants. It explores the crucial role of fisheries and fish farming in eliminating hunger, promoting health and reducing poverty. Today, fish makes up 17% of the global intake of animal protein and provides around 3 million people with almost 20% of their individual intake, making it a significant source of nourishment.

The design of the Arid Zones Cluster recalls a desert sandstorm, representing the harsh arid conditions in which over 20% of the world population lives. Visitors are made aware of the variety of arid areas around the world - the various soil types, flora and fauna, water balance and levels of human activity.

The Cluster also takes a look at the different water resource management practices and at traditional methods developed by local farmers to suit local conditions. Managing and addressing the difficulties involved in growing crops in arid areas is vital to ensuring that people can enjoy a better quality of life and overcome poverty. The area also highlights how, despite recent advances in responding to difficulties faced by farmers in arid parts of the world, there is still an urgent need to tackle the effects of climate change and water shortage.

The UN spoon installation in the Arid Zones Cluster focuses on the livelihoods of people in arid and semi-arid areas of the globe. It illustrates how despite social, political, economic and resource-based constraints, almost 200 million pastoralists in the world are able to generate income where conventional farming is limited or not possible. The installation also showcases UN projects from the field that ensure rural people’s access to land and water and promote improved governance of natural resources.

Based close to Pavilion Zero and the Expo Milano entrance, the UN Garden introduces visitors to the Zero Hunger Challenge and the UN itinerary in a relaxing setting.

A mega screen based in the garden displays a video message from the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and from each of the heads of the UN Rome-based agencies as well as other relevant videos produced by UN entities. A UN tent in the area, used for small events or exhibitions, recalls the UN’s important work in disaster relief. This non-commercial and sustainable structure also includes an area dedicated to the flags of the UN member states, emphasising the founding concept of the UN, “United”.

A giant UN spoon acts as the centrepiece, on top of which people can walk or sit.

The UN Garden comprises an installation of wooden crops and spoons symbolising how we must cultivate the practice of working together in order to achieve the Zero Hunger Challenge.

The UN spoon installation in this area briefly addresses each of the elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge and the UN focus area for Expo Milano 2015, women’s empowerment and gender equality. It also provides an overview of important UN programmes and their positive contribution to the fight against hunger.

Based at the main entrance to Expo, Pavilion Zero introduces visitors to the Exposition’s theme focusing on humankind’s relationship to nature and the way food production, conservation and consumption have evolved.

The first UN spoon installation of the UN itinerary located at the entrance to Pavilion Zero introduces the elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge and provides an overview of important work carried out by the UN in the fight against hunger.

The Pavilion consists of 12 rooms with impressive props from a huge artificial tree that breaks through the roof, to an 18-metre digital wall, life-size animals, fish swimming through the sky, hanging farming instruments, 360 degree digital landscapes and film documentaries on the five winners of the competition on Best Sustainable Development Practices.

PAVILION ZERO - THE ROOMS

1A – Wall of Memory

A grand entrance measuring 24 by 50 metres, made of chestnut, durmast, oak, and elm with drawers and statues reminiscent of the history of civilization.

1B – The Digital Wall

A projection of arts and crafts on a 20 metre wall; these include depictions of hunting, fishing, breeding and cultivation. This wall takes inspiration from Mantova’s Sala dei Giganti.

1C – The Tree of Life

A 24-metre oak made of resin bursts through the ceiling. This is symbolic of the tree of life and knowledge which has encouraged man to seek perfection.

2 – Domesticated Plants

To domesticate is to tame the outside world; to cultivate is to care for the earth. Huge drawers filled with seeds and spices and hanging panels with vegetables fill the room.

3 – Domesticated Animals

Breeding: by domesticating animals, the human diet is transformed. This room is a Noah’s Ark, with sculpted animals, paintings on the walls and fish suspended from the ceiling.

4 - The Valley of Civilization

At the centre of Pavilion Zero lies the Valley of Civilization, an open-air room with an impressive 400 sqm table made of wood from a prehistoric kauri forest.

5 – Tools

From the spoked wheel of 2000 B.C., to the plough and the sickle… Visitors see artificial ploughed earth and dry stone walls, recalling the beginning of private property.

6 – Containers

The discovery of containers led to the advent of many activities, including gathering and preserving. Some fifty archeological objects fill a series of display cabinets.

7 – Industrialization

A 400 sqm model recreates scenes from life during the industrial era (the first railways, mining and the steel industry) offering glimpses into the past from Crespi d’Adda to Chicago.

8A – The Stock Exchange

Live food market prices move across a large screen, 13 metres tall and 40 metres wide. Graphics and diagrams complement the display.

8B – Food Waste and Loss

The contemporary dilemma: overconsumption. The world produces 30% more food than necessary, but evidently it is badly distributed. The iconic photo of Alberto Sordi from “An American in Rome” features among a selection of projected images.

8C - Disasters

A crack in a wall offers a glimpse onto images of contemporary tragedies, including earthquakes and tsunamis, but also major food problems such as malnutrition and obesity.

9 – Landscapes

Close to the end of the trail, there is a message of hope, displaying landscapes cultivated by humans who respect the earth and practice sustainable development.

10 – Best Practices

At the final stop where visitors exit the pavilion, five films on men and best practices are screened.

The UN-Expo team has worked with Expo’s curators to include UN multimedia content in Pavilion Zero and to integrate it in the best possible way in as many rooms as possible. A number of UN panels or stele inform visitors, in a simple storytelling style, about links with concepts present in each of the rooms, the UN’s work in these areas and the elements of the “Zero Hunger Challenge”.

These brief texts immediately capture the attention of a diverse, non-technical audience constantly flowing through the area. The sharp graphics accompanying the text facilitate easy reading of the texts, while the UN-Expo logo reinforces the visual identity and strong UN presence in the Pavilion.

Best practices

The International call for “Best Practices in Sustainable Development” (BSDP) was launched on 14 November 2013 and closed on 31 October 2014. The competition is part of the Feeding Knowledge platform, an initiative launched by Expo Milano 2015 to encourage greater cooperation in research and innovations related to food security with the aim of becoming an important part of the Exposition’s legacy.

The initiative aims to identify, collect, promote and facilitate the sharing of best practices in food security in terms of food availability, food access and food use.

Of the 18 selected best practices - between two to four for each thematic priority - five are featured in films produced by Expo Milano 2015 and screened in Pavilion Zero. The others are illustrated through photo stories. After actively promoting the competition throughout the organizations of the UN System, three UN projects made the final selection.

The United Nations is celebrating three International Days at Expo Milano 2015. During UN days, a large part of the exhibition site is transformed according to UN colours and branding as country pavilions and other participants join in the celebrations and demonstrate their support.

Expo participants have been informed about the three UN Days through the Expo Milano Events Guide and an Official Communication. Guidelines on how to get involved in the three UN Days and a toolkit with print-ready designs are also prepared by the lead agencies, with the support of the UN-Expo team, and circulated to the 147 countries and organizations participating in Expo Milano 2015.

Promotional spaces have been offered in kind by Expo for related video spots or multimedia promotion. These include 18 video walls in various piazzas and 44 video totems on main Expo pathways.

Under the theme “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with care”, World Environment Day (WED) this year took centre stage on 5 June at Expo Milano 2015, as one of the United Nation’s international celebrations.

On 5 June, the official opening ceremony at the Expo Centre began with UNEP’s official video, followed by a video message of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the remarks, among others, by UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner, transcripted here.

The celebrations included a cooking class with left overs for kids and the traditional Expo Mascot Parade dedicated to this UN Day. Watch this video for highlights on the events which took place at Expo Milano 2015.

On 4 June, on the eve of celebrations, the Italian Minister of Environment, Gian Luca Galletti, and UNEP Executive Director, Achim Steiner, held a press conference. During it the launched the Sustainable Production and Consumption Handbook and signed the “Carta di Milano” (Charter of Milan).

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Director-General of FAO will be joined by the President of the Republic of Italy and the Italian Ministers for Agriculture and Foreign Affairs for the official opening ceremony at Expo Milano. Falling in an opportune moment, just after the Summit in September 2015 and before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COPI), World Food Day promises to be one of Expo’s most important events. It will be a unique opportunity to send a strong message to young people - the Zero Hunger Generation – on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to engage them in the challenge of sustainably eradicating hunger and poverty over the next 15 years. The official ceremony will commemorate FAO’s 70the Anniversary and address the theme for World Food Day 2015, “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty”, and how this links with the UN theme for Expo 2015, “The Zero Hunger Challenge · United for a sustainable world”.Highlights of the ceremony will include the official presentation of the Milan Charter to the UN Secretary-General, a manifesto that engages all citizens in the fight against undernourishment, malnutrition and waste, while promoting equal access to natural resources and sustainability. The Urban Food Policy Pact, where Mayors worldwide commit to coordinating international food policies, is another important legacy document that will be presented. In addition to the keynote speakers, the Heads of IFAD and WFP will speak during the ceremony and guests will hear a few words from Pope Francis.Other World Food Day events on 16 October with the participation of the UN Secretary-General and FAO Director-General include “Zero Hunger Generation”, an interactive question and answer session with students exploring the crucial role that young people will play in achieving the newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and “Finance for Food”, organised by the Italian Ministry of Economy and IFAD.

16 OCTOBERWorld Food Day

On 19 August, one of the international celebrations of the World Humanitarian Day took place at Expo Milano 2015. The theme of WHD 2015 was to “Inspire the World’s Humanity.” The Governments of Italy and Switzerland, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the World Food Programme (WFP) hosted several activities on the day to highlight humanitarian crises around the world – particularly in the context of food security - in line with the Expo Milano 2015 theme of “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.”

The celebrations included an official WHD ceremony, a parade in the spirit of worldwide humanitarian solidarity and an interactive, high-level discussion on ending hunger, which featured Barbara Noseworthy, Assistant Executive Director of WFP, Rashid Khalikov, Director of OCHA Geneva, Ambassador Manuel Bessler, Delegate for Humanitarian Aid and Head of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit, Cornelis Wittebrood, DG ECHO Head of Unit for East, West and Southern Africa, and Toby Lanzer, Assistant Secretary-General & Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel. Throughout the Expo there were multimedia exhibits showcasing humanitarian action.

The ultimate goal of galvanizing a greater sense of global citizenship was supported this year through a groundbreaking #ShareHumanity digital campaign. Our aim was to mobilize a greater and more active global citizenship using the power of social media. In an age that is more digitally connected than ever before, we seized the opportunity to act together to advocate for a more peaceful and humane world and build up public awareness and support for the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.

UN GAME

62

The UN-Expo Zero Hunger Challenge Game has been developed to explain, educate and engage Expo’s visitors in the Zero Hunger Challenge, as well as to invite users to explore the UN itinerary at EXPO 2015.

Each level of the game consists of a 15-puzzle (a sliding square puzzle) and a multiple choice quiz, where with each correct answer players automatically qualify for the next level.

Before starting the game, the player should choose between 2 options, the first being to play the game online and the second one related to the UN itinerary at the Expo Milano site. In the second case, answers to the questions can be discovered at the UN installations onsite.

A new element is presented at the beginning of each level with text and animation. Players are asked a question each time they complete the 15-puzzle. There are a total of seven levels, one for each of the five elements of the Zero Hunger Challenge plus the UN focus area on women’s empowerment and gender equality (six in total) and a final level addressing the UN’s work and participation in Expo 2015.

Each quiz question online is linked with a page containing further information on the topic, that helps the player to find the right answer, if necessary. A wrong answer means that the player has to start the puzzle once again and answer a new question.

The aim of the game is to reduce the number of hungry people in the world to ZERO by getting as many people to play as possible. After all, we can only end hunger by working together.

After completing all seven levels and signing the ZHC Declaration, a virtual passport for the United Nations is issued as a prize. Following the upload of a photo and the insertion of the name of the user, the passport is ready to print, save and share online, along with the personal score (i.e. the reduction of the number of people suffering from hunger). Each step of the game (levels, prizes etc.) is shareable on social media.

PARTNER UFFICIALE

The United Nations at Expo Milano 2015

For the first time in the history of world expositions, the UN will not have a pavilion but instead a horizontal presence with content spread throughout the Expo site. A UN Zero Hunger Itinerary will link UN content, from Pavilion Zero – where the link between Expo’s theme and the mission of the UN will be most evident – through Biodiversity Park, the Children’s Park, the Future Food District, the nine thematic Clusters, country pavilions and the civil society area, Cascina Triulza.

Read our updated book to find out about the various elements that make up the UN’s presence at the World Exposition. The UN at Expo Milano 2015 provides a detailed illustrated account of the UN’s participation in Expo including the UN’s Zero Hunger Challenge theme, our horizontal presence, the UN Zero Hunger Challenge Itinerary, the UN Days that will be celebrated at Expo, the different communication tools available, and our collaboration with countries and both official and strategic partners.

The UN Itinerary MAP

A large part of the UN Itinerary will be made up of several UN installations located in Expo Milano’s main thematic areas, easily recognizable by their giant blue spoons. By visiting the UN installations you will be able to discover through videos, photo stories, infographics and maps how the UN System strives daily to eradicate hunger and guarantee a sustainable future for our planet. Above all, by following our itinerary you will discover how to take part in the Challenge, because in order to get to Zero, we need everybody to get involved.

UN at Expo Milano 2015 Video

This video, available in English, Italian, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian and Chinese, offers a glimpse into the United Nations’ presence at Expo Milano 2015, including its Zero Hunger Challenge theme and itinerary, the UN spoon installations, thematic areas and clusters, participating agencies and the UN Days that will be celebrated at Expo.

The UN at Expo Milano 2015 Flyers

This flyer, available in English, Italian, French and Spanish, explains the UN’s theme for Expo Milano 2015, “The Zero Hunger Challenge-United for a Sustainable World”, and the different elements that make up this theme.

Eccellenze Italiane Magazine

Eccellenze Italiane, an official partner to the UN, has produced this special edition dedicated to the UN system’s participation at Expo Milano 2015, available in English and Italian. It includes in-depth information on the UN’s theme for Expo 2015 from the leading agencies, FAO, WFP and IFAD, along with a feature on women and their fundamental role in agriculture. A special edition will be produced for World Food Day and distributed at the Expo Milano site during the celebrations on the 16th October 2015.

United we can build a world within our lifetimes whereall people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safeand nutritious food and lead healthy and productivelives, without compromising the needs of futuregenerations.

This concept is summed up in the Zero Hunger Challenge launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. The UN will bring this vision to Expo Milano 2015, demonstrating to visitors how it is possible to end hunger in our lifetime, how this can only be achieved if we work together and how they can and need to be part of the solution.

The United Nations and “Art for a better future” share the common vision that Art is a universal language that inspires positive change, eliminates barriers and eases communication. Art motivates and unites individuals and organizations towards the common dream of a better world and society.

In line with this shared vision and with the UN Theme for Expo Milano 2015 - The Zero Hunger Challenge • United for a sustainable world - “Art for a better future” has joined forces with the UN and selected up to 60 works of art to interpret the five objectives of the Zero Hunger Challenge plus the special focus on women’s empowerment and gender equality.

“Art for a better future” is the non-profit organization of pptArt, the first art crowdsourcing platform in the world working with over 2,000 artists from 75 countries.

The innovative participation model employed by the United Nations at Expo Milano 2015 requires a strong visual identity in order to be able to facilitate both the recognition and propagation of our message and furthermore, the visitors’ engagement with our theme. In this light, Centergross, one of the largest international entities in this field, supports the UN’s participation in the World Exposition in Milan by sponsoring the production of cotton bags that promote our visual identity. The bags are been distributed throughout the six months of the Expo during special events, among which are the three UN Days.
