The STO has increased its Australia- based local team to four including the appointment of Phil Haines, trade and industry manager for New Zealand and Australia. Haines says there’s huge potential for the Kiwi market as capacity to both Los Angeles and San Francisco is set to increase following new United Airlines and American Airlines flights. It’s possible the state is also anticipat- ing competition from Air New Zea- land’s new Houston flights, which add a US gateway to a market that Califor- nia has traditionally dominated. Haines is in New Zealand this week to get a feel for the market here ‘with a view to having some increased activ- ity in the coming year’. “This particu- lar trip is all about getting to know the market better, really understand the market,” he says. The trade should also expect to see more of Haines in the future, he says. “Because we have that extra capacity that will give me the ability to be here more often, about four times a year,” he says. The new services are great news for agents ‘in terms of capacity and get- ting great airfares’, says Haines—and there’s an added drawcard in the form of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter, opening at Universal Studios in Apr. “There’s a huge opportunity to sell more California at this point in time, with the great airfares and competi- tion,” says Haines. “There’s a chance to see a different side of California and there’s a great repeat opportunity. Qantas has continued its reign as the world’s safest airline in a new study by AirlineRatings.com, with the Aussie carrier maintaining its ‘fatality free record in the jet era’.The Australian carrier has been fa-mous for safety since Dustin Hoff-man’s character in the movie Rain Man told his brother that QF has never crashed. For the last three years, AirlineRatings.com has also picked it to top its list of the 20 safest airlines, praising the carrier for amassing ‘an extraordinary record of firsts in op-erations and safety’ in its 95 years. The airline rating website monitors 407 carriers, and also among the top 20 are Air New Zealand, Virgin Austra-lia, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Alaska Airlines, All Nippon, American Airlines, EVA Air, Finnair, Japan Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, Swiss, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic. The site looks at factors including airline audits, fatality records, opera-tional history and incident records to select its safest airlines. Of the 407 surveyed, 148 have the top seven-star safety ranking but almost 50 have

just three stars or less. There’s also 10 airlines with only one star, all in Indo-nesia, Nepal and Surinam.

. . . Top LCCsThe site also picked its top 10 low-cost carriers, which were Aer Lingus, Flybe, HK Express, Jetblue, Jetstar Austra-lia, Thomas Cook, TUI Fly, Virgin America, Volaris and Westjet. Unlike a number of LCCs, these have all passed the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), it notes.

. . . Tragic YearLast year was a ‘disturbing’ one for aviation safety, with tragic incidents such as the GermanWings and Metro-jet disasters, says AirlineRatings. However 16 accidents in 2015, with 560 fatalities, was below the 10-year average of 31 accidents and 714 fatali-ties, notes the site. “Last year was also a significant improvement over 2014, when there were 21 fatal accidents with 986 fatalities,” it says.Airlines carried 3.6 billion passengers on 34 million flights in 2015—while 50 years ago, 1597 people were killed in 87 crashes, but overall passenger numbers only reached 141 million.

AA Discrimination SuitAmerican Airlines is reportedly being sued for some USD6 million for discrimination, after three Mus-lim men and a Sikh were removed from a flight because the pilot felt uneasy. The men are all New York citizens and were removed from the flight from Toronto last Dec, say re-ports. They weren’t given a reason for being asked to leave the flight until they were back at the terminal. The men were flown on the next flight.

With excitement building for this year’s launch of Seven Seas Ex-plorer, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ ‘most luxurious cruise ship’, the line has today revealed it’s planning to invest USD125 million to ensure the rest of its fleet is of the same standard. In a bid to provide clients with a consistent look and feel, no matter which Regent ship they choose to sail onboard, the two-year refurbishment program includes significant renova-tions of most public spaces and a complete redesign of all categories of suites. Seven Seas Navigator, the line’s small-est ship, carrying just 490-guests, will be the first to receive the upgrade this northern spring, followed by Seven Seas Voyager in late 2016 and Seven

Seas Mariner in the spring of 2017. The cruise line says Navigator will emerge ‘essentially a brand new ship’ following the upcoming dry dock 31 Mar-13 Apr, with all suite categories, all lounges, the library, casino, bou-tiques, reception area and signature restaurants Compass Rose and La Veranda having recently been com-pletely renovated. Following the dry dock, Navigator will spend the northern summer travers-ing the Mediterranean and late fall in South Africa; whilst in 2017 she will offer Navigate the World, Regent’s first world cruise in six years. Begin-ning and ending in Miami, the cruise will circumnavigate the globe in 128 nights, calling on six continents, 31 countries, 62 distinct ports and ex-ploring 29 World Heritage sites.

There will also be Alchemy Bar, a vintage-themed ‘cocktail pharmacy’; BlueIguana Tequila Bar, a festive outdoor bar; and Cherry On Top, which will be home to bins of bulk candy, gifts and novelties, custom apparel and more. Following the renova-tion, the ship will resume its year-round schedule of three- and four-day Baja cruises from Long Beach.

Protest Disrupts CruiseSm a l l b o at l o a d s of p o l i t i c a l protestors blocked Royal Caribbean passengers onboard Freedom of the Seas from disembarking at its private destination Labadee in Haiti recently. Widespread reports say the protest was a result of upcoming lo-cal elections. In a statement, Royal Caribbean said while the protest was peaceful in nature, ‘it was clear that if the protest continued, there would be a significant impact on our guests’ ability to enjoy Labadee’. The ship remained at sea before heading to its next port of call. The cruise line is set to monitor the situation and is in ‘close communication with local and government officials in Haiti’.

Trafalgar is noting an increase in bookings from Kiwi travellers who in the past may have been more likely to opt for an FIT journey, a trend the company is partly attrib-uting to ‘recent world events’.Trafalgar general manager Scott Cleaver says while Kiwis are known as resilient travellers, recent events have seen ‘more bookings from those who may have chosen a more inde-pendent holiday in the past’.“With Trafalgar’s evolution of a mod-

ern guided holiday to meet the locals and get under the skin of a destina-tion, we have seen more FITs realise the benefits of guided holidays and it’s fair to say we expect that trend to continue in 2016,” he says.“If customers are looking for that extra level of safeguard when going abroad, guided holidays provide that.”More than 72% of Trafalgar’s bro-chured departures for Europe and Britain 2016 are already definite with almost three months to go until the first summer holiday departs in Apr, says Cleaver, who’s encouraging agents to ‘book with confidence’.“We are excited about the next stage of the Europe selling season and agents can confidently offer an amaz-ing Europe holiday with Trafalgar in 2016,” says Cleaver.Savings of up to 7.5% are available across the Trafalgar programme for bookings and payments prior to 29 Feb. Taiwan’s Shoe ChurchA church in the form of a giant high-heeled shoe, made of blue glass tiles and metal, is currently being built in Budai, Taiwan in a bid to at-tract more tourists. According to reports, the idea was born with hopes to turn ‘a sad part of history into something positive’. In the 1960s, residents had to drill deep wells to access drinking water, which led to arsenic contaminating the water, and in turn, many locals were plagued with Blackfoot disease and lost their legs. The project manager says because many women ‘lost the opportunity to walk into marriage’, they hope to create a place where people can get married, ‘invoking the fairy tale of Cinderella’.
