Regular 7:30 am Mass January 15, 2018

My dear Parishioners,

This Monday our country celebrates the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin

Luther King, Jr. as a national holiday in the wake of a storm of pro-

tests against apparent racial slurs uttered by the President of the

United States on Thursday against people of color in Africa, Haiti

and El Salvador. Far from the best environment for a celebration

of the life and legacy of one who actually gave his life in the ongo-

ing battle against racism. Had he lived, Dr. King would be 89

years old. One wonders what he would say about the divisively

destructive situation we find ourselves in today.

I believe that Dr. King’s words would ring out as consistently and

powerfully as they did in the past. The quote in the adjoining col-

umn is typical of his stance. We need to be reminded especially

today of his insistence that change can come about only through

love. The “Beloved Community” he dreamed of and which is an

image of the Kingdom of God consists of three basic components:

inclusivity, interculturality and non-violent love.

The battle to achieve such a society must go on despite obstacles of

ignorance, indifference, hatred and violence. Eventual victory is

inevitable but without prayer, impossible. Our task lies starkly be-

fore us. In the words of that lovely hymn by Marty Haugen, “Let

us build a house (nation?) where love can dwell and all can safely

live, a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to for-

give. … Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and

visions heard, and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words

within the Word. … Let this house (nation?) proclaim from floor to

rafter: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this

place.”

Ministros El 21 de Enero

Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Hermanos,

El año litúrgico se ha movido hacia el tiempo ordinario y

nosotros nos encontraremos para orar en estos días que parecen

ordinarios. Ya no visitamos el pesebre ni estamos frente al

sepulcro vacío. Samuel dormía en el templo, tal como

aparentemente era su costumbre. Andrés y Juan (probablemente

haya sido Juan el otro discípulo con Andrés) estaban pasándola

junto a Juan Bautista, que estaba bautizando en Betania cuando

Jesús pasó de casualidad. Su día ordinario (o noche) se convirtió

en transcendental.

El tiempo ordinario no es ordinario. Es tiempo que es numerado;

tiempo ordenado, del latín "ordinal". Contamos los domingos del

año fuera de las grandes estaciones de Adviento, Navidad,

Cuaresma y Pascua. Es un momento en que nos enfocamos en la

vida y el ministerio de Jesús mientras proclama el Reino de Dios.

Los días ordinarios se vuelven espectaculares cuando nos

encontramos con el Señor y al presenciar sus muchos milagros,

sanidades y escuchar sus palabras de sabiduría. Era un día

ordinario cuando Samuel, Andrés, Juan, Simón fueron llamados

por el Señor, quienes a través de sus vidas hicieron milagros y

obras heroicas. Recuerde que a través de nuestro bautismo, todos

estamos en esa línea de personajes bíblicos. Es tan común que es

fácil pasar por alto su significado.

Este lunes celebramos la vida del Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.

quien con el poder de la fe y el evangelio se enfrentó al racismo

y la injusticia en los Estados Unidos. Elogió el cambio de efecto

que fue beneficioso para todos los pueblos. Su sueño era que

todos los pueblos vivirían juntos en paz y esperaba el día en que

un hombre fuera juzgado por el contenido de su carácter más

que por el color de su piel. Así que di una oración por la paz y la

buena voluntad esta semana.
