Slinger High School teams, along with sev-al youth programs, will benefit from artificialrf that will be installed at the high school fieldver the summer.
The district recently gave the go-ahead tostall turf at the high school athletic and trackld. Superintendent Robert Reynolds said instal-tion of the turf field will begin soon after thehool year is completed.
The cost of the turf will be approximately500,000, with half the cost paid by the districthile the other half was raised through private
sources. Reynolds said that while $250,000 is alarge sum of money, the district will save by nothaving to budget for the maintenance andupgrading of the current fields. The turf field willalso allow for more use and open up fields foruse by other youth groups.
Because the artificial turf can withstandalmost unlimited use, it can be used for manymore events including practices. This will free upthe somewhat limited green space in the Slingerarea for other youth groups and activities,Reynolds said.

Summer is a season of fun and freedom forkids; however, it is also a time for increased risksof accidents, injury and danger from the elements.
There are many reasons for this, according tothe Center for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), namely less supervision, more activitiesand an easing up on the rules.
Tragedies rise and nearly half (40 percent)of all unintentional injury-related deaths occur dur-ing the summer monthsMay to August, theagencys website states. While you relax thissummer, summer is not the time to relax aboutsafety. Close supervision, proper protective gear, and other simple prevention steps will help keepyour child safe.
Dr. Laura Franck, a pediatrician with theFroedtert Health Medical Group in MenomoneeFalls, concurred, stating that by staying mindful ofthe four main areas of risksun, heat, water and
head injurieschildren and parents can enjoy afun, but safe summer.
A lot of it is common sense, she said.People get carried away with how much funtheyre having and they forget these things, but itsimportant to not do that.
Francks safety tips: Sun: Franck recommends avoiding the sun
at its peak and taking caution at all other times.Obviously try to be in the shade, or at least
out of direct sunlight, during the early afternoon, she said. And use sunscreen at all times.
She said parents should apply SPF 30 sun-screen to their children 15 minutes before sunexposure, reapplying every two hours, or everyhour if the child is in the water.
But make sure to use an athe pediatrician warns.

Water: According to the CDC, drowningse the leading cause of injury and death for
young children ages 1 to 4, and three childrendie every day as a result of drowning.
Unfortunately kids and teens drown everyyear and these drownings could be prevented,Franck said, noting that a lot of these incidentsoccur in just a couple inches of water.
Make sure to supervise your children, shesaid. Dont run inside for even a few minutes toanswer the phone.
Those who have pools in their yards need to

She pointed out that water needs to berespected by everyone, no matter the individ-uals ability level.

Head injuries: Along with broken bones, sprains and bruises, head injuries among chil-dren increase during the summer months, saidFranck.

Container gardens have long been usedadd a spot of color by a front entrance or
xpand planting space in city lots, balconiesnd decks. Dont let past experience andadition limit your vision. Try one or more ofese attractive, fun and functional ways toclude containers in your landscape, largesmall.Add vertical interest to any garden or
arden space. Select a large attractive con-iner filled with tall plants like papyrus and
anna. Or elevate a small pot on steppers orn overturned pot for added height. Createeight with smaller pots and plants by strate-cally stacking and planting them into a cre-ive planting. Try setting any of theseanters right in the garden to create a dra-
atic focal point.Create a privacy screen or mask a badew. Use an arbor or other support foranging baskets and then place a few con-iners below for an attractive screen. Oreate a garden of containers to provide sea-nal interest using a variety of plants. Use
ees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses foreight. Save money by purchasing smallerants. Elevate these on overturned pots for
added height and impact. Mask themechanics by wrapping the pots in burlap. Then add a few colorful self-watering pots inthe foreground for added color and beauty.Fill these with annuals or perennials for addi-tional seasonal interest.
Bring the garden right to your back doorfor ease of harvest and added entertainment.A self-watering patio planter, windowbox, orrail planter reduces maintenance and makesharvesting herbs as easy as reaching out thewindow or backdoor. Plus, guests will havefun harvesting their own fresh mint for mojitosor greens for their salads.
Define outdoor living spaces within yourlandscape. Use containers as walls anddividers to separate entertaining and playareas from quiet reflective spaces. And con-sider using pots with built in casters or set
them on moveable saucers to make movingthese pots easier. This way you can expandand shrink individual spaces as needed sim-ply by moving the pots.
Create your own vacation paradise. Useplanters filled with cannas, bananas, palmsand New Zealand flax for a more tropicalflare. Add some wicker furniture to completethe scene. Or fill vertical gardens, an oldchilds wagon, metal colander or wooden
and concrete planters with cacti and succu-lents. Add some old branches and largestones. Youll feel as though youve hikedinto the desert.
All you need is a bit of space and cre-ativity to find fun new ways to put containersto work for you in the garden this season.

It may be hard to imagine now, but eventu-ally that little one dragging toys from one endof the house to another will be a teenager, andthat teenager wont like the sweet striped wall-paper you selected for their bedroom. Better toget rid of that wallpaper and make choicesnow that will work for toddlers to teens.
While wallpaper is nice, changing it out asyour child grows can be a hassle. Paint is a bet-ter choice, especially for the younger yearswhen messy hands are not uncommon.Removing dabs of chocolate pudding from apainted wall is far easier than it is from a wall-papered wall. Trade the wallpaper for paint, and to reduce color changes over the years, choose a somewhat neutral shade that yourchild can live with for a long time, such as amossy green, pewter gray or golden caramel.
Think neutral for all other aspects of the
room, in particular the flooring and lighting.Forget the rose-colored carpeting and the pinkand purple ceiling fan. Opt for beige carpetingand a black, white or wooden ceiling fan
instead. You can bring color and character intothe room with fabrics and accessories that caneasily be changed out.
Continue the neutral backdrop with the win-dow coverings and linens. White or woodenblinds will grow with your child, as will solid-colored sheets and bedding. Your child mayhave a favorite cartoon character or color, andyou can honor that in the valances, pillows, throws and duvet covers. Keep the sheets andbed ruffle khaki and pump up the color with acamouflage-themed duvet color and darkgreen pillows and window valances.
Get rid of the race-car or princess bed andany other furniture that wont stand the test oftime. Look for sturdy, multi-functional pieces thatwill appeal to your child now and later. Bunkbeds are great for young kids who like to havesleepovers and can be separated later for
older kids. The same goes for that modularcube storage unit. You can stack the cubes oneway when your child is young and another waywhen they are older. As for furniture color, neu-

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is theame given to emancipation day by African-mericans in Texas. On that day in 1865 Unionajor-General Gordon Granger read Generalrders, No.3 to the people of Galveston. It stat-
d:"The people of Texas are informed that, in
ccordance with a proclamation from thexecutive of the United States, all slaves are free.is involves an absolute equality of personal
ghts and rights of property between formerasters and slaves, and the connection hereto-re existing between them becomes that
etween employer and hired labor. The freed-en are advised to remain quietly at their pres-t homes and work for wages." Large celebra-ns on June 19 began in 1866 and continuedgularly into the early 20th century. Therican-Americans treated this day like the
Fourth of July and the celebrations containedsimilar events. In the early days, the celebrationincluded a prayer service, speakers with inspira-tional messages, reading of the emancipationproclamation, stories from former slaves, food, red soda water, games, rodeos and dances.
The celebration of June 19 as emancipation
day spread from Texas to the neighboring statesof Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It hasalso appeared in Alabama, Florida, andCalifornia as African-American Texans migrated.
Celebration of Juneteenth declined duringWorld War II but revived in 1950 at the TexasState Fair Grounds in Dallas. Interest and partic-ipation fell away during the late 1950's and1960's as attention focused on expansion offreedom for African-Americans. In the 1970's
Juneteenth revived in some communities. Forexample, in Austin the Juneteenth celebration
returned in 1976 after a 25 year hiatus. The preceding information was taken form
the Texas State Library and ArcWeb site.
