MARRIAGE CEREMONIES - MAKING THE ARRANGEMENTS~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Choosing The Venue

The first thing you need to decide is the type of ceremony you would like.

If you are planning to be married in England or Wales you may choose either a religious marriage in a church, chapel or other religious building, or a civil marriage ceremony.

You then need to decide the venue in which you would like your ceremony to take place.

Civil Marriage Ceremony

You may marry in any Register Office or Ap-proved Premise of your choice in England or Wales.

The Register Office, West Berkshire

The Register Office is located at Shaw House, Church Road, Shaw, Newbury and ceremonies are held in either our Ceremony Room which holds 46 guests or the statutory Register Office room which holds 6 guests.

You can be married in either of the rooms from Monday to Saturday. You may wish to have a simple ceremony with just two witnesses, or you may wish to enhance the ceremony by adding music, readings and personal vows. You may choose to enter the room with an escort. Whatever your preferences, we will be happy to discuss the arrangements with you. However it is important to remember that any enhancements you wish to include must not have any religious links or connotations and must be suitable for inclusion in a marriage ceremony.

Please telephone us to check our availability and to make a booking.

Approved Premises In West Berkshire

There are many premises in West Berkshire which have been licensed for marriage and there is a current list at the back of this brochure or on our website. Marriage ceremonies may only take place in the rooms that have been licensed by the venue and you should check with them the number of guests that their licence allows.

You should discuss available dates with the venue of your choice and then contact us to check that we have Registrars available. We will do our best to accommodate your chosen date and time, but please understand that we have a large number of venues to attend and the choice may be restricted at popular times. You will be able to make a booking over the phone and we will then explain to you the next steps you need to take.

If you choose to be married at a Register Office or Approved Premise in another district, you should contact the Superintendent Registrar of the relevant district to book the Registrars. If you live in West Berkshire, you will need to make an appointment with us to give notice of marriage.

Religious Ceremonies

If you are getting married in a Church of England church you should make all your arrangements with the Minister of that church. They will advise you about Banns of Marriage, fees payable and any other legal formalities.

If you are marrying at any other religious building you should first contact the Minister, or other person in charge of marriages in that building. Usually, the building must be in the registration district in which you or your partner live, or be the usual place of worship of one of you. You should then contact the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you reside, to make arrangements to give a legal Notice of Marriage.

You may also need to book a Registrar to be present at the ceremony, if the building does not have its own Appointed Person.

Marriages Abroad

If you are planning to get married abroad you must ensure that you comply with the legal requirements of that country. You should contact the relevant Embassy or you may find it helpful to contact the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for further information. If you are required to produce a Certificate of No Impediment you should contact the Superintendent Registrar for the district in which you reside to arrange to do this.

Civil Ceremonies in West Berkshire

Unless you are marrying in the Church of England or Church of Wales by Banns or Common Licence, notice of marriage must be given by each of you, in person, to your local Superintendent Registrar. No one else can give notice on your behalf.

You must both have been resident in that district for at least seven clear days before a notice can be given. If you live in the same district, you should both attend together to give your notices of marriage. If you live in different registration districts, then each of you will need to give notice in your own district. It does not matter if you move to a different address once notice has been given.

After you have given your notice the details will be displayed on a public notice board at the Register Office for the statutory period. A “Certificate of Marriage” can then be issued and is valid for one year from the date on which the notice was given. It is these legal documents that allow your marriage to take place.

If you are getting married in another district, or at a religious building, you will need to collect these certificates and give them to the person who is conducting the ceremony. The marriage ceremony can only take place in the venue stated on the notice. If you decide to get married at a different venue, new notices of marriage will have to be given.

Please telephone us to make an appointment to give notice of marriage in this district.

Civil Ceremonies in West Berkshire

You will need to produce certain documents when you attend to give your notices. When you tel-ephone to make an appointment we will explain the documents required which will include:

Evidence of Identity and Nationality – a passport is the ideal document, but a birth certificate may also be accepted depending on your circumstances.

Evidence of Address – this may include a bank statement, council tax bill, driving licence or utility bill.

Evidence that a previous Marriage or Civil Partnership has ended – if either of you have been married or in a Civil Partnership before, either in this country or abroad, you must produce evidence that this has ended.

If your marriage or Civil Partnership was dissolved, and it was granted in England or Wales you will need to produce the court sealed Final and Absolute. If it was dissolved elsewhere, you must produce the original document issued by that country along with a translation if necessary. If you are widowed please bring the death certificate of your previous spouse.

Evidence of Change of Name – if you have changed your name legally you will need to bring the legal document with you.

Fee – please see the list of current fees at the back of this booklet. If your ceremony is taking place at an Approved Premise in this district, you will also need to pay the relevant fee for the Reg-istrar’s attendance at this time.

If either of you is under 18 years of age, you will need to produce evidence of consent from your parent(s) or guardian. Forms can be obtained from the Register Office and you should telephone us for advice.

Please be aware that photocopies of any of these documents will not be acceptable.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR GIVING NOTICE OF MARRIAGE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Foreign Nationals

Notice of marriage can only be given at a designated office. We are not a designated office and therefore will be unable to take your notices, although you will still be able to be married in this district.

Please telephone us for advice and we will be able to tell you where the most convenient designated office is for you.

What Happens Next?

Once your notices of marriage have been given, if the ceremony is taking place in West Berkshire you will be given a booklet with details of the marriage ceremony and the enhancements that you can choose to include. If you have any questions at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Same sex couples wishing to formalise their relationship may choose to register their Civil Partnership instead of a marriage ceremony. Please see www.gov.uk/government/publi-cations/comparison-of-civil-partnership-and-marriage-for-same-sex-couples for a definition of the legal differences between marriage and Civil Partnership.

In order to register a Civil Partnership same sex couples must be over 18 (or provide evidence of consent if aged 16 or 17), must not be related to each other within the prohibited degrees of relationship, must not be in an existing marriage or Civil Partnership and must have lived in England or Wales for at least seven clear days before Notice of Intent is given.

Choosing The Venue

A Civil Partnership may be registered at any Register Office or Approved Premise of your choice in England and Wales.

You are not required to say any words if you do not wish to do so. Alternatively, you may wish to hold a ceremony to celebrate the registration and may include vows, exchanging of rings, readings and music. Whatever your preferences, we will be happy to discuss the arrangements with you. However it is important to remember that any enhancements you wish to include must not have any religious links or connotations and must be suitable for the occasion.

Naming Ceremonies

This is a ceremony to celebrate your child’s birth and is a special way of welcoming them into the family.

It is an opportunity for you as parents and for friends or relatives close to you, to make promises to your child that you will provide them with love, support, reassurance and guidance throughout your lives.

You may also wish to give your child a gift to celebrate this special occasion, to include readings and music, and grandparents and siblings may also wish to join you in making promises.

Whatever your requirements you can have a unique and personal Naming Ceremony in West Berkshire, that is written especially for you.

CELEBRATORY SERVICES~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Renewal Of Wedding Vows

This is a ceremony for couples who are already legally married, who wish to reaffirm their commitment to each other by renewing their marriage vows.

You may feel it is an appropriate way to celebrate a special wedding anniversary (e.g. 10th, 25th, 40th etc), or you may have been married abroad and wish to renew your vows in the presence of family and friends who were unable to attend.

Whatever your reason you can renew your marriage vows in West Berkshire with a unique and personal ceremony that will be written especially for you.

Please remember that a Naming Ceremony and Renewal of Vows Ceremony has no legal status and is not legally binding on any one who takes part. The ceremony will be conducted by a celebrant, who will not be acting in an official capacity, even if they also work as a Registrar.

We are happy to provide either of these ceremonies at Shaw House, Newbury or at any of the Approved Premises in this district. A list of these is available at the back of this booklet.

Please telephone us to make a booking or if you have any questions regarding these ceremonies.
