The kids are all back in school, we're back to our schedules, and there is only one thing on my mind . . . “ME TIME!” I finally have a moment to get my house in order, get some work done, and maybe start that diet I've been talking about for the last few months. You know, the one that will begin . . . tomorrow.
When my girls walk through the door after getting off of the bus they're always hungry. Summer may be winding down, but the fall activities calendar in Wichita is heating up.
Start with the Wichita Black Arts Festival, Sept. 1-3. This Labor Day weekend tradition in McAdams Park, near 13th and Ohio, is a cultural celebration of the artistic heritage of African Americans. This year’s festival features a dance workshop, a car and bike show, live music and a parade. For more information, call 316.371.5624.
Also Labor Day weekend, The Kansas African American Museum (TKAAM) starts a series of events urging the preservation of family history and cultural history. The first event is the “We Are Family” Reunion, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Activities include guest speakers, a family parade and a health fair plus presentations about tracing family genealogy. One of the most eagerly awaited stage productions ever will leap into Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center. Disney’s “The Lion King” is visually stunning and filled with a musical score that includes songs by Elton John and Tim Rice. It takes more than 40 actors to bring the savanna to life. Derby is the meeting point for people who love to cook barbecue and those who like to eat barbecue Sept. 7-8. Look, up in the sky! The USAF Thunderbirds and the US Army Golden Knights are the highlights for the 2012 Wings Over McConnell Open House Sept. 29-30. The airshow and open house is a chance for the Air Force to showcase its capabilities to Wichita-area residents. Runners from across the country will race through Wichita during the third annual Prairie Fire Marathon Oct. 14. This event, organized by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission, grows each year as its reputation spreads through the running community. Looking for a low-cost healthy snack alternative to feed your children this summer? Dr. Kaumeyer of the Riordan Clinic had these ideas.
1. Almonds, walnuts, mixed with dried fruit and mini semisweet chocolate chips - add 1/4 cup to a ziplock bag
2. Raw sweet bell pepper, carrots, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber with a side of hummus! Kids LOVE to dip vegetables. Can also use whipped cream cheese as a dip. Add black pepper, garlic, or different herbs for a different flavor.
3. Celery covered in natural peanut butter. Add raisins for added flavor.
4. 2 tbsp of natural peanut butter, cut up an apple (drizzle with lemon juice or vitamin C powder to keep apple from browning)
5. Sweet potatoes fries- cut up sweet potatoes, drizzle with olive oil and salt, bake ... store in fridge for healthy school
Healthy Snacks for hungry kidslunches, these are great left over!!
7. Peanut butter and banana sandwich on 100% whole wheat bread.
8. Nitrate free turkey sandwich , on 100% whole wheat bread - can use olive oil mayo as a spread. Try adding lots of baby spinach, the kids will like the added crunch to the sandwich!!! Also add pickles or olives if you'd like...
9 Buy natural applesauces - they come in lots of different flavors now!
10. Tuna fish - try making it more kid friendly - add grapes or nuts for flavor and texture pieces of fruit - bananas, apples, pears, cut up a kiwi ---> change it up!!! surprise them, make the lunch as COLORFUL as possible

In 1995, the Buddy Walk, a national fund-raising event developed by the National Down Syndrome Society to promote acceptance and inclusion of
all people with Down syndrome, took place nationally in 17 cities.
This year, nearly 300 Buddy Walk events are expected from mid-September through November with more than 285,000 people expected to participate. About 3,000 people in Wichita alone are expected to come together on October 13th to support our local families.
Kalyn Grimes (4) was diagnosed with Down syndrome before she was born in 2008. After spending one month in
the NICU at (Via Christi) St. Joe, having heart surgery at 4 months old, and several years of therapy with Rainbows, she is happily in her second year in the early childhood education program with Andover schools.
“Kalyn loves to play outside, follow her big brother KC (6) around, and play pretend by imitating others. Her favorite toys are her baby dolls, purses and toy phones. Kalyn’s ability to communicate has improved so much over the past year as she tries to keep up with her talkative cousin Cheyenne (2 1/2) who is her best friend,” says her mother Melanie.

did not know if he had Down syndrome or not. His parents had to wait almost 2 weeks for the results of the tests they had run.
Looking back, it is easy to see why they were not able to diagnose him right away, he is a little boy first!” His parents say he is like any other child at his age. Keaton loves Toy Story, Spiderman, and has been practicing his Olympic dives after watching them on TV. What makes Keaton even more special is, he’s a twin!

starts early, even before their teeth start popping up! Use a soft, warm, damp washcloth to gently massage the gums at least twice daily. The two most important times are after feedings and definitely before bed: this prevents sugars & bacteria from sitting in the mouth causing infection or decay on newly erupting baby teeth. When your baby’s teeth start popping through the gums, it’s time to upgrade from a washcloth to a small head, soft bristle toothbrush. Lookout for signs of tooth decay -- brown or white spots on the teeth.

From the DistrictChrista McAuliffe Academy, the brand-new K-8 school in southeast Wichita, celebrated its grand opening on August 8. Christa McAuliffe Academy is one of five new schools opening this fall. The school hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the new facility.
“This is a dream come true,” said principal Shawn Springer. “I have a wonderful staff that has been working so hard to get ready for first day. We are all really excited to have the students come.”
“I don’t know who is more excited for the first day of school – the students or the teachers?” laughed kindergarten teacher Lisa Gray.
“I like that everything is new,” said Jerrett Counts, eighth-grade student. “The desks are new, there are new jerseys for sports, the lockers are clean and don’t have stickers or anything stuck inside them.”

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, families toured the school and students met their teachers before the first day of school.
Middle school students received their locker assignments and tested out their combinations so they would be ready on the first day.

Students at Pleasant Valley Elementary will have an opportunity to enjoy activities at home with the help of a $500 grant from the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita. This year, Pleasant Valley will implement the ““Take It Home” project, under the direction of P.E. teacher Cindy Johnson. The project will allow students to check out a bag of activity equipment to take home over the weekend to increase physical activity, hand-eye and hand-foot coordination, and other basic motor skills. The Health and Wellness Coalition grant was awarded to help schools promote physical activity and healthy eating.
Pleasant Valley Elementary awarded Healthy School grant
What’s served on students’ meal trays will look different this school year. Changes to the guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will increase healthy options for students. Some of the big changes that students will see include larger serving sizes of fruits and vegetables, an increase in beans and legumes and smaller amounts of grains, including breads, cookies and chips. As part of the increase in vegetable serving size, the students will also receive more dark green, red and orange vegetables.
The daily requirement of fruit will be one-half cup for elementary and middle schools and a cup for high schools. The daily vegetable requirement will be ¾ cup for elementary and middle school and one cup for high school. Elementary students will see three items
of fruits and/or vegetables at each meal. At the secondary level where students can decline some menu items, students will have to take a serving of fruit or vegetable.
The district has already been doing many of the other new USDA requirements, including increasing the amount of whole-grain foods, offering both fruit and vegetables every day and serving only fat-free or low-fat milk.
Also new this year, the district will start using biodegradable trays on which meals will be served.
Changes to breakfast menus will occur in the 2013-14 school year to meet federal guidelines.

Arts Partners is an organization aimed at helping students learn in a new and exciting way. By incorporating the arts, Arts Partners helps students see their typical subjects in different ways. 136 different early childhood schools in our area frequently use Arts Partners to help enhance their students learning.
