dAVId merrILL, utah state universitytuesday, october 23 at 4:00 pm et

Join David Merrill as he shares a unique approach to instructional design, the first principles approach. The first principles approach to instruction is problem-centered; the premise is instruction that focuses on problem-solving. In this Author Keynote, David will demonstrate how the acquisition of problem-solving skill involves a synthesis of individual instructional strategies including kind of, how-to, and what happens. David will demonstrate how these instructional strategies are combined to promote problem-solving skill, and then demonstrate how a module or course organized around a progression of increasingly complex problems of a given type leads to more effective, efficient and engaging learning.

During this event, David will also briefly describe the Pebble-in-the-Pond model for instructional design. This model differs from more traditional instructional systems development in that it is a principle-oriented, content-first, problem-centered, prototyping approach to instructional design.

Benny Johnson, Quantumthursday, september 20 at 11:00 am etthursday, october 4 at 11:00 am et

For the topics of Transaction Analysis and Adjusting Entries, core topics for understanding the accounting cycle, virtually all practice problems follow the same familiar format: a collection of transactions performed by a given business during a specified time period. Modern research-based models of human cognitive architecture suggest, however, that this format is suboptimal for novice students. An approach better aligned with learning research would give students practice with one transaction type at a time before working conventional problems. In this Guest Lecture, Benny will introduce results from a randomized experiment in an introductory financial accounting course showing that during practice, students in the targeted practice group analyzed transactions faster and with greater accuracy than students who worked conventional problems. On a post-test, the targeted practice group achieved the same performance with less study effort, and was also better able to apply their knowledge in a variety of scenarios. Join Benny as he shares the positive impact cognitive load theory has on student homework and practice.Available for 1 CPE credit

One of the biggest challenges for students taking chemistry courses is concept mastery. WileyPLUS, an online learning and assessment system, offers multiple types of assessment, including Concept Mastery questions. The problem types and rich resources support structural drawing skill development and conceptual understanding. In this Product Information Session, Sean Hickey will demonstrate that when students make connections among visual, symbolic, and structural representations of chemical phenomena, they build real chemical understanding. Concept Mastery presents students with problems that require them to make these connections, so they can build a solid framework for conceptual understanding.

Earth’s climate has always changed. Modern climate change does not, however, fit geologic history. In the past half century the rate and extent of climate change has been extraordinary. Despite extensive searching, no known natural processes can account for the present climate trend of extremely rapid warming of the temperature of the lower atmosphere. Further, industrial exhaust, deforestation, and large-scale agribusiness are known producers of heat-trapping gas in the atmosphere. It is only logical to conclude that there is a strong likelihood that these human activities are causing the extraordinary warming; in fact, among scientists, this has been known for decades. In this Author Keynote, author Chip Fletcher will discuss the most recent research that focuses on the causes and effects of climate change and offer strategies that can help learners understand why and how scientists have come to this conclusion.

During this Guest Lecture, Dr. Cynthia Young, veteran mathematics professor and author, shares her Top 10 Teaching Tips on how to bridge that gap.

Simulation-based methods (randomization hypothesis tests and bootstrap confidence intervals) are an intuitive, visual way of introducing the core concepts of statistical inference. During this Guest Lecture, Kari Lock will discuss these methods, and why they have been deemed “the next big thing” in statistics education.

Wiley authors Patti Frazer Lock, Robin H. Lock, Kari Lock, Dennis Lock and Eric Lock have developed a set of freely available web-based apps for supporting statistics courses that use modern simulations methods (such as bootstrapping and randomization tests) to introduce the core ideas of statistical inference. During this Product Information Session, Robin H. Lock will demonstrate the main features of StatKey and discuss how it can be used to make these methods easily accessible and understandable for students with a wide variety of backgrounds. Although StatKey’s built-in examples are coordinated with the text Statistics: Unlocking the Power of Data, the tools allow users to input and analyze their own data and can be used with any course where the instructor wants to give students experience with what many people call the “next big thing” in statistics education.

College Algebra is sometimes taught as mastering a set of skills, while other College Algebra courses focus on modeling. In this Guest Lecture, William McCallum will describe materials that incorporate both algebraic skills and modeling of natural phenomena in a framework where the primary emphasis is on understanding the language of algebra. As mathematicians, we have come to read algebraic expressions as easily as we read English. Many students in College Algebra, however, fail precisely because they have not learned how to “see” what an algebraic expression is telling them. The goal is for the students to be able to see expressions as phrases; equations as sentences; and numbers, variables, and parameters as the words. Bill will offer innovative ideas and some new types of problems to use with your students in your own courses. He will present algebra in a new light, providing an awareness of the power of “algebraic literacy” and a new understanding of how difficult both skills and modeling can be for students when they have not yet developed this algebraic literacy.

Inquiry-based learning allows students to discover concepts through a guided set of exercises. Interactive Inquiry-Based Learning Modules (i-IBL) bring College Algebra to life both in the class and when students are on their own. Specific examples of i-IBL modules can be used in two ways: (1) as an instructor-led in-class activity and (2) as a student self-paced guided inquiry-based learning activity. During this Guest Lecture, Cynthia Young shares how interactive illustrations combined with guided inquiry-based questions can increase the depth of conceptual understanding without being intimidating and improve overall student learning.

Language instructors work hard to design effective programs that enable students to reach high levels of proficiency. At a time when class sizes and administrative workloads are increasing, how can instructors provide students with the personalized attention (conversational practice, stimulus, support, etc.) that they need to succeed? During this Product Information Session, Elena Casillas will share a case study where students were offered a holistic approach to learning Spanish: using a publisher’s technology solution (independent learning) and live language coaching using the Dicho en Vivo Program (guided learning in a live, real-time environment with language coaches from Guatemala). The study explores elements such as a student’s anxiety level learning a new language, ways to incorporate authentic language interactions, the negotiation of meaning, the affective filter, the role of a monitor, student engagement and retention. Elena will show examples of recorded live-class sessions with students, as well as student feedback through Facebook and blog learning journals.

Learn how Microsoft Certifications now validate a broader and deeper set of current skills and experience across a technology solution platform. Previously, Microsoft’s MCTS and MCSE certifications previously focused on skills required for deploying and managing the base infrastructure. Increasingly, the entire infrastructure will be available in the cloud. The management and mixed environment of the cloud requires more rigorous IT professional and developers’ exams. Hear how these changes will require more planning and design expectations for IT job roles. This Guest Lecture will help you discover what you need to know to help your students embark on successful IT careers.

LouIs BLoomfIeLd, university of Virginiathursday, october 4 at 1:00 pm et

Join Lou Bloomfield for an Author Keynote on how effective “case-study physics” will capture the interest of non-science students who are looking for relevance in their studies. Based on his book How Things Work, Lou will show that when physics is taught in the context of ordinary objects, students are enthusiastic, look forward to classes, ask insightful questions, experiment on their own, and find themselves explaining to friends and family how things in their world work. Lou will look at the concept and structure of a How Things Work course, at how to teach its objects, and at how to assess what students learn from it. Though Lou’s book focuses on concepts rather than on calculations, How Things Work is rich in physics and requires that students think hard about the world around them. As in Lou’s course, this Author Keynote will examine a few ordinary objects as a way to explore physics, to provoke questions, and to build insight.

KAren huffmAn & KAtIe toWnsend-mArIno, Palomar collegeWednesday, october 10 at 3:00 pm et

Why does America lag behind almost all countries in our students’ science and math scores? Why is the scientific method at the top of almost all psychology instructors’ list of student learning outcomes, yet it remains as one of the most challenging areas to teach? Karen Huffman and Katie Townsend-Merino believe that making science fun and personal, along with incorporating it throughout the entire intro course, are two of the best answers to these questions. Thanks to their combined total of over 50 years of teaching introductory psychology, as well as a great deal of hands-on, trial-and-error “experiments” with their own classes, Karen and Katie have developed several tips and techniques that successfully cover the essential keys and concepts of psychological science, while maximizing its innate excitement and fun, along with its personal benefits and useful applications. This Guest Lecture is designed to explore and explain the best of what your presenters have learned. They will also personally “demonstrate” several sure-fire techniques that produce quantifiable results and provide detailed handouts for use in your own classes. Please come prepared to share your own insights, activities, and expertise. Eligible for 1 CE credit

KAren huffmAn, Palomar collegeWednesday, november 14 at 1:00 pm et

Throughout the ages, folk wisdom and philosophy have told us that the best learning takes place when students are fully engaged. As instructors, we’ve all experienced times when students sit up just a little bit straighter in their seats. Then, at the magical moment when they “get it,” you can almost see a light bulb lighting up above their heads. How can we have more of these “light-bulb moments”? What are the best techniques for student engagement? Can we measure the results? How can we find time for student engagement, active learning, and critical thinking, while still covering all the necessary content? This Guest Lecture is designed to explore and demonstrate answers to these questions. Join Karen Huffman as she shares a handful of sure-fire techniques that produce quantifiable results. Come prepared to contribute your own insights, activities, and expertise as well.Eligible for 1 CE credit

SOCIAL WORK

derALd WInG sue, columbia universitythursday, november 29 at 11:00 am et

As classrooms become increasingly diverse, difficult dialogues on race, gender and sexual orientation have often served to polarize students and teachers rather than to clarify and increase mutual understanding about majority-minority group relations. Most well-intentioned instructors find themselves ill-prepared to deal with the often explosive race-related emotions that manifest themselves in the classroom. Poorly handled, such dialogues may result in disastrous consequences (anger, hostility, silence, complaints, misunderstandings, blockages of the learning process, etc.); skillfully handled they present an opportunity for growth, improved communication, and learning. During this Guest Lecture, Derald Wing Sue will share strategies on how to constructively facilitate and engage your students in difficult dialogues on race, gender, and sexual orientation.
