COURT HOUSE - The Performing Arts Center of Middle Township has announced an innovative and exclusive schedule of shows for the first half of 2013 including a hilarious Beethoven never seen this way in musical history, a tribute to Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, and the first of eight concerts by piano virtuoso Linda Gentille and her Jersey Shore Pops. Managing director Kay Aspell said the bookings are in keeping with The PAC’s policy to bring to its stage professional acts that are new to this area but are in demand in venues such as New York and Las Vegas. The fun begins on Sat- urday night , Feb. 2, at 7:30 when a Ludwig Van Beethoven you have never known appears In a hi- larious two person cabaret show at The PAC. Ev- eryone except the stage manager has quit at the cabaret , so the story goes, but Beethoven insists that the show must go on. So he assumes all the miss- ing characters and there follow satirical comments and modern musical inter- pretations (yes, even Barry Manilow) that keep the audience laughing. To give the production the proper cabaret feeling , the entire audience is seated on The PAC stage. “I have seen this show, “ said Aspell, “ and I booked it quickly because never have I laughed so much.” • If you’re a fan of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli (and who isn’t?) then mark Saturday night, April 13, at 7:30 in your date book. That’s when the show “Liza and Judy--Together Again” comes to The PAC and it promises to be an exciting night as actresses Denise Rose and Suzanne Goulet recreate the roles of the famous mother-daughter team in song, dance and costumes. Prepare to hear some of their great songs of the past such as “Rockabye Your Baby,” “Cabaret,” “The Trolley Song,” “Over The Rainbow” and”New York, New York.” • And to open her sea- son, Liberace protégée and internationally known pianiist Linda Gentille will bring her Jersey Pops Orchestra to The PAC on Saturday night, June 29, at 7:30 with the Irish tenor, Colm Fitzmaurice. He per- formed here during the first year of the orchestra and was so well received that he is returning by popular demand, said Gentille. The pianist and her orchestra, who have broken all house attendance records at The PAC during the past two years, will set out for a new one in 2013 when for the first time they will present as many as eight concerts at The PAC in one season. • Aspell said other acts are being planned and the public will be notified in the media or on the website when they are finalized. For admission prices, reservations and further information, call 609-463-1924. CAPE MAY - The 2013 Cape May, NJ Calendar of Events sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) is here!

Through April 14"Celebrating Commu-

nity Service: Black Fra-ternal, Social and Civic Organizations of Cape May County."

This exhibit presented by the Center for Com-munity Arts (CCA) in col-laboration with MAC will uncover the signifi cance of black fraternal, social and civic organizations in Af-rican American social life. Because the African Ameri-can community is often ignored by mainstream or-ganizations, the Busy Bees, Sea Gals, Masons, Eastern Stars, Elks, the Black USO and CCA - to name a few - have emerged with the sole purpose of enhancing the

lives of African Americans. In addition, black organi-zations can serve specifi c needs that only pertain to African American families. Hundreds exist nationwide with local chapters in cit-ies and towns. The focus of this exhibit will be the Black organizations of Cape May County. Free admis-sion. Gallery hours vary. Free exhibit opening Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Center for Com-munity Arts (CCA) and the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). For more information call 609-884-5404 or see www.capemaymac.org.

CAPE MAY - Area sing-ers, musicians, history buffs and those who want a fun day will enjoy a very spe-cial musical event planned for Feb. 9 in Cape May. All are invited to a Shape Note or Sacred Harp day of song and potluck lunch under the leadership of Aldo Ceresa from Brooklyn, NY. For singers or those with an interest in history, musical or otherwise, or just for fun, this is a day not to be missed. The event will take place at Cape May’s Episcopal Church of the Advent at Washington and Franklin Streets from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Shape note singing is a kind of four-part a cap-pella music (without instru-ments) that was popular around the time Cape May was first being settled. Cape May resident Vicki Watson helped organize the day and invited Mr. Ceresa to lead. She noted

that this music is about participation, not perfor-mance. Each of the four parts sit facing each other in a “hollow square”. Men and women can sing the same part an octave apart. All are welcome, whatever your interest or singing skill. There is not separate seating for an audience, but listeners will be able to enjoy the experience and participate, seated in the pews and singing the melody.

The term “Shape Note” refers to the special way the music is written, with notes in different shapes to make sight reading easier. The music is sometimes called “Sacred Harp” be-cause the most widely-used collection of shape note songs today are in oblong hymnals called “The Sa-cred Harp”. The term “sacred harp” refers to the human voice. The tradi-tion, originally from New

England and the American South, almost died out until revived over the last few decades under the leader-ship of dedicated singers and leaders, including Aldo Ceresa who will lead the Cape May event.

The day will begin at 10:00 a.m. in Church of the Advent with a workshop to explain and practice shape note singing. There will be a potluck lunch at noon for everyone attending. Willing and able local sing-ers are invited to bring an item to the potluck to share with another, since many of the singers will be com-ing from a long distance. After lunch everyone will

A free-will offering will be taken to defray expens-es. Otherwise there will be no cost. We’ll be sing-ing from the 1991 Den-son edition of The Sacred Harp, and books will be available for loan or pur-chase. Episcopal Church of the Advent, located at Washington and Franklin Streets in historic Cape May is delighted to host this event. Call Advent’s church offi ce at 609-884-3065 with questions and to let the organizers know you are coming so that we will have enough hymnals available.

with our South Jersey com-munity. Our special events programs include some ma-jor changes going forward. We are focusing our events on educational experiences for the community and working to provide oppor-tunities for adults, as well as children, to learn in the natural world.”

One of the most signifi -cant changes to this year’s schedule of events is the addition of two festivals – and the absence of the Wings ‘N Water Festival. The Wings ‘N Water Ben-efit Auction on Aug. 3 will be the only remaining component of the festival. Many of our traditional Wings N’ Water festival components will be held in mid-September as part of the new Fall Migration Festival.

Staff will now be able to focus on new and innova-tive education and conser-vation programs that will feed program content and events into the Shorebird and Fall Migration Festi-vals. We will no longer hold the Wings ‘N Water Art and Carving show, but will retain the Quilters show as part of the Fall Migration Festival.

Other special themed days (e.g. , Turt leFest {3/30}, Crabulous Crab Day {7/19}, Monarch Madness {10/5}), as well as fund-raising events (e.g., World Series of Birding {5/11}, Mac McAnally Concert {TBD}) are also planned. Please visit www.wetland-sinstitute.org for upcoming dates and more information on all of the special events and programs.
