Volunteer Abroad?

Page 3: X-LAB Presentation

How many hours per week will this commitment be? How much will this cost? And how am I going to afford it? Should I live with a host family, by myself, or with a group of volunteers? Is it better to travel with a church group, international non-profit, or individually?

Where is safe? Where can I help? Where do I want to go? How long should I be abroad? Do many other people do this? Will I be able to go on vacations? Can friends or family come visit me? Can I only volunteer in one location? Do I need to learn another language? Can I leave early if I am needed at home? What if I donʼt like my volunteer placement? What kind of volunteering would I most enjoy? How will I stay in contact with people at home?

Are there any important political events we should be, but arenʼt aware of? How do we reach Ryan in the event of an emergency or natural disaster? How does an international service commitment appear on a résumé? What should we do to prepare Ryan for the “culture shock” abroad? Which volunteer organizations have the strongest reputations? How will we send Ryan money in the event of an emergency? What if Ryan is uncomfortable with the living arrangements? Will Ryan be able to contact us regularly and inexpensively? How much will this cost? And how are we going to afford it? How does this impact Ryanʼs admission to university? Will Ryan be able to access an Internet connection? Will Ryan need an international cell phone? Do we need to worry about kidnappings? Can we visit Ryan while he is abroad? Who can we speak to for guidance? What will Ryanʼs diet look like? Where is safe? M

The graduating high school class of 2009 consisted of 3,011,040 students. 96% of those students were interested in taking a gap year to

travel abroad. Only 2% actually did so. 1 in every 3 of those students went abroad to volunteer. Most people assume that volunteering abroad is difficult because of the costs, safety, and importance of immediately continuing with higher education. The cost of a gap year is often as low as $3,000 – before the expense is offset by fundraising, grants, and scholarships. Only 5% of international volunteers ever need to visit a doctor for illness while

abroad. Less than 3% experience incidents of personal injury or theft.

Less than .1% becomes a victim of a serious crime, such as assault or kidnapping. Harvard has seen the number of students deferring entrance by a year increase by 33% in the past decade. MIT saw their number double in the last year alone. Lack of information available to the consumer is the

#1 deterrent of international volunteering, four times out of five.
