An unusual residentarrived at Liverpool ONE thisweek, adding an extra bit ofculture to the shoppingcentre, in the form of thehistoric Liverpool Sailors’Home gates.

The magnificent, ornate gates havebeen re-erected, close to their originallocation, after an absence of 60 years. The cast iron gates originally markedthe entrance to the Sailors’ Home onCanning Place, where the LiverpoolONE retail development now stands.

They have been erected in the samearea on Paradise Street, near the JohnLewis store.

Known by many as the PooleyGates, they were designed andinstalled in 1852 by West Derby-bornfoundry owner Henry Pooley and

architect JohnCunningham. They are a greatexample of 19thcenturyindustrial design, combiningengineering andart. Originallycreated towelcome the menand women of agreat seafaringport, the restoredgates will nowserve as amemorial to themerchantseamen who

passed through the city. The city’s World Heritage Officer,

John Hinchliffe, said: "We aredelighted these historic gates are oncemore standing proud in our city. Itmakes perfect sense to re-erect themnear to the spot where they originallystood, near to Old Dock which wasvitally important in the creation ofmodern Liverpool. They now providea gateway to Liverpool ONE and thecity’s World Heritage Site.”

The gates were removed in 1951,in advance of repairs to bombdamage to the building causedduring World War II. They wereoffered to W & T Avery, and taken totheir Soho Foundry in Smethwick,in the West Midlands, where theystood until 2010 as an example ofPooley’s craftsmanship.

The gates return to their rightfulplace is thanks to a campaignbegan in 2004, led by formermerchant seaman Gabriel Muies.

Summertime boom atAndrew Louis

The British weather may have beendisappointing this summer AndrewLouis estate agent reports, it hasbeen raining property sales and newinstructions at their Liverpool citycentre office.

Over the course of June and July the numberof valuations has almost doubled compared tothe same time in 2010 and as a result over 30new instructions secured by the new businessteam. Coupled with this new business surgehas been an increased demand from investorsfor good quality, city centre accommodation.

Erica Mooney, sales and lettings manager atAndrew Louis Liverpool, said: “The numberof potential investors we have registered overthe summer has been amazing. Confidence inthe sales market is at its highest for threeyears and with interest rates so low people arerealising that their money will work better forthem in property rather than in a bankaccount.”

This realisation has been dramatically onshow with over 25 properties being saleagreed during June and July and recordviewing numbers continuing to increase weekon week.

“I think buying makes themost sense financially. Iexpect to rent for a littlewhile, but hopefully not fortoo long. I’d like to buy assoon as I can, even if itmeans starting withsomewhere small. I thinkpeople like to buy becauseit’s the British culture –having a home is linked tostatus. People are veryproud of their homes, because it’s a measure ofhow you’ve done in life.”

Jenna Whitestudent, Widnes

“Personally, I don’t need toown a home to be happy. Forme, ideally, home would besomewhere in the countrysideand it wouldn’t matter if it wasrented or owned. Buteverybody is different. Forsome people their home iseverything to them, but forothers it’s family and wherethey live isn’t important aslong as they are near thepeople they love.”

Andrew McLaughlinpreacher, North Wales

“I would rather own a house. Ithink that’s become moreimportant now I’ve got a family.I guess it’s having the equity init and having something to handdown to your children. I havelived in rented accommodation, and it’s okay, but a part of youis permanently worried aboutthe rug being swept from underyour feet and the landlordwanting you out. We boughtwhen prices were high, butwe’re still glad we did.”

Tony Collinssoftware developer, Norwich

HAVE YOUR SAY

YOUR VIEWS ON BIG ISSUES

Home ownership is set to slump over the next decade, with more peoplerenting instead. It’s a shift that brings the UK more in line with countries likeGermany, where two thirds of people live in rented accommodation.

“If you rent you get your repairsdone and you aren’t tied tomortgage. You don’t have to worryabout fluctuating interest rates oranything like that. I think people are a bit obsessedby owning property in Britain andrenting is seen as second best tobuying. But a generation or twoago it was quite normal to rent formost or all of your life and I don’tthink it’s a bad thing.”

Joy Millerretail manager, Ormskirk

“I prefer renting. I’ve seen so manypeople buy a place then break up,but are still committed to amortgage. Renting, you are free tomove whenever you want. Sincethings like the Tenancy DepositScheme came in the system is a lotfairer for tenants too.”

Kayleigh Millerretail worker, Chester

“In Sweden renting is verypopular and themunicipalities (localauthority areas) own andprovide affordable, goodquality homes for privaterent. We have 1,000apartments in a town of10,000 people, so it’s widelyavailable. You can also sign alease for 10 years. Renting isvery popular among the over55s, because they want totravel and don’t want theirmoney tied up in property. There are also good subsidiesavailable for pensioners onrented property.”

I got down on one knee inthe sales office and askedLindsey to marry me. Shekept on saying 'oh my god, ohmy god', and then she said yes.I had given Kate, the salesconsultant, the ring to attach tothe keys.

One of the first things thatstruck us about the housewas how light it was.Everything is so clean andneutral, it was like having ablank canvas and we could putour own stamp on it.

We have already boughtsome sofas from CSL

Sofas and the rest of thefurniture for downstairs- our colour theme ispurple. We have keptthe walls magnolia butwe want to put anaccent wall in purple. We have seen some

lovely purple floral andabstract wallpaper in Next

and B&Q, which we hopeto use.

A property with threebedrooms was veryappealing for us because inthe future we would like tohave a family. We would loveto have some fitted wardrobesinstalled and even carpets onthe stairs but we may have towait until half term to do that.We are saving for a weddingnow too so we have two thingswe need to save up for.

We have been working on thegarden and we have plantedan orange tree and a lemontree but we need to install abigger shed so Michael canhave some 'man' time tohimself. Being one of the firston the development was a bonusespecially as the builders werestill here and were able to helpus with anything we needed. The sales consultant, Kate, hasbeen wonderful too and reallylooked after us. We have met ourneighbours and they are lovelyand we love the feel of thedevelopment. Our last home hadpermit parking so it is a real plusto have off road parking.

We just love havingan en-suitebathroom; it was oneof the mostappealing featuresof the house. Inthe last property werented, thebathroom wasdownstairs and itwas cold and damp;this one is lovely andmeans we have twobathrooms for Michaeland I to get ready at thesame time.

Lindsey Critchley, a teaching assistant and MichaelFarrelly, a science teacher, bought a three bedroomsemi-detached home at Fountain Court, Whitford Road,Birkenhead through Lovell. The development will alwayshold special memories for the couple, who are both 25,because Michael proposed to Lindsey when they wentto collect the keys to their new home.

Sue Johnston OBE is one of Merseyside’s most famous actresses. Being cast inBrookside kickstarted a long and astonishingly successful career on TV and infilm, but she’s perhaps best loved as put upon mum ‘Barb’ in sitcom The RoyleFamily. Sue has just published her memoir entitled ‘Things I Couldn’t Tell My

Mother’, and she takes time off from filming to tell Your Move all about it.

How did your autobiography get itsname? My mum died three years ago and Ispent the last days at the care homereflecting on our lives together. I thought ifI wrote an autobiography that would be agreat starting point. But there are things Icouldn’t have written about if she’d beenalive, not because I’ve criticised her in aterrible way, but I wouldn’t have been ableto investigate our relationship in the way Idid. Your mother’s either your best friend orit’s a relationship fraught with anger, andthat was ours, even though it was soprecious. Actually there’s a quote I haven’tput in but I’ve just remembered: ‘You’venever looked decent since I stoppeddressing you.’ That sums up myrelationship with my mum. She lost controlover me. That’s where the conflict comes in.What are the things you couldn’t tellher? It deals with my eating disorder, bulimia, and my depression, which shewouldn’t have understood. I also talk aboutwhen I was attacked, 40 years ago, and howit left me. I never talked to my mother orfather about it at the time because it wasthe thing they’d lived in dread about eversince I went to London to become anactress. Dad and I lived a life of taking theeasy way out. We wouldn’t tell her certain

things because we didn’t want to upset her. Were there any teenage escapades youcouldn’t reveal? At Prescot GirlsGrammar in fifth form we used to climbover the school wall to meet the boys. But itwas very innocent compared to now. I’d goto The Cavern Club and even there theyonly sold pop and tea. When you cameback you smelled of it and my motherwould disapprove and say: ‘You’ve been tothat dirty Cavern’. When the Scene at 6.30came on TV it would be: ‘It’s those dirtyBeatles’. But when Brian Epstein tidiedthem up it would be all sweetness and lightand: ‘When is Paul coming round?’You worked with Epstein. You must havesome good tales about the Beatles? I’vegot some naughty tales but my lips aresealed – maybe I’ll write another bookwhen I’m 80 and I don’t care anymore. Iwas great friends with Paul - he came to myhouse and when they went to the Star Clubin Hamburg he wrote to me. When SheLoves Me was out Paul and Ringo werevery concerned no-one was going to comeand see them, so they decided to drivedown Mathew Street before theirperformance. Crowds were queuing and thegirls went mad. I was in the back seathidden under a pile of coats. I neverfancied Paul though. I saw him as a mateand lusted after John Lennon like everyoneelse. But he didn’t want to know. You’re known for playing stoiccharacters who suffer a lot. Has real lifeever helped you play any of them?During the riots last month I was filming in

Enfield and I was dreading anyonedamaging my property because I wouldhave had to go out and confront them.Injustice makes me angry and my instinct isto fight back. I fought when I was attacked. There have been lots of situations inLiverpool or Manchester where I’ve steppedinto a fight, even when a man who had beenstabbed came flying down the stairs of aclub. It’s in my nature and hard for me notto do. I’ve got that spirit. That’s been usefulas an actor. What role would you most like toreprise or do? There’s going to beanother Christmas edition of the RoyleFamily this year so I’m very grateful to bereprising Barbara Royle. She’s a great one.I’m also in a new BBC drama about awoman who has been left, a woman of myown age for a change. There’s a lot ofcompetition when these roles come up anda lot of friends my age are brilliant actorsbut don’t get enough work. I was lucky Igot Sheila Grant. What places in Liverpool hold a specialplace in your heart? I’m an LFC seasonticket holder, so Anfield obviously. TheMersey, I could look at that forever. Andthe Adelphi, the posh hotel where you hadto pay sixpence to go to the toilet. Wethought that was hilarious.

Sue Johnston will be signing copies ofher autobiography Things I Couldn’tTell My Mother (Ebury Press, £18.99) onSaturday, September 3 at 1pm atWaterstones bookshop on Bold Street.

We have a small downstairsbathroom, which I would liketo have a nautical theme.Have you got any advice onhow to achieve this look?

INTERIOR DESIGN

With over ten years’ experience in the interior designbusiness, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your designqueries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

If you’re going to theme aroom I would always suggestcreating the look withdecorating elements that caneasily be change or moved. This way if you ever getbored with the theme it iseasy to change. I have foundgreat nautical wallpaper, which would look fantastic ina small bathroom. The BoatStamps from Purldeco isperfect for bathrooms as theadhesive is oil-based andwater-resistant.

I am desperately trying to find a chairfor the hallway and would likesomething hard-wearing with leatherupholstery. As we live in an oldcottage the hallway is beautiful andwe would like the chair to be a focalpoint of the room so a piece that is unusual and unique would be ideal.

Halo is a company that always tests the boundaries of commercial furniture design. Eachproduct is handcrafted creating the right balance of traditional manufacturing withinnovative pieces of furniture. In their collection, I have found what could be the perfectchair for you. Created by the designer Ryan McNeish, the Saddle Chair is a unique piece.Inspired by the traditional riding saddle it fuses comfort, individuality and style. Thequilted leather finish is drawn from the quilted fabric places under the saddle and theremovable stirrups which hang from each arm help to create a contrast between the coolshine of the steel and the warmth of the soft leather.

In the last issue of Your Move, I noticed a reader asked foradvice on light shades for their hallway. I was really

interested in the shade that you recommended as I havesimilar shades in my living room, however although I love

the shades I hate looking at what I consider to be uglyenergy saving light bulbs. Do you know of any energysaving light bulbs I could get that are well designed?

The design company Plumen has designed andmanufactured the world’s first designer energy saving lightbulb, so help is at hand. The light bulb is a fantastic design

invention, it uses 80 per cent less energy than thetraditional incandescent fittings, keeping down electricity

bills and it’s better for the environment. The light also lastsup to eight times longer. The Plumen range allows you topurchase an environmental-friendly product with style. Itworks like any other low energy bulb but has a lot more

presence and would look fantastic in your light shades. Infact the bulbs are too cool to hide behind a shade with theirsculptural glass design; you could just suspend them from

your ceiling fitting.

In the propertybusiness, it’s the littlethings that make newhomeowners and tenantsgrateful, from taking Liverpoolémigrés on a city tour to becomeacclimatised to fitting in numerousviewings in a single afternoon for acustomer.

“At the moment letting is very
