The Eastern Chrome Corridor, mining development organisations, residents of the Badfontein area, regular road users and the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality met on Tuesday at the local municipal offices to discuss amongst other roads the R36. The R36 came into the news yet again when the Lydenburg Guest Farm owner, Alison Botha, took a photo of Rosie Morrison, bathing in one of the potholes. Even the spokesperson of the Department of Roads had to give quick feedback and response after public outrage. He said: “The road has now deteriorated to the point where patching is not a feasible option anymore, but rehabilitation is required. Government would make every effort to ensure the road was rehabilitated. As we are approaching the end of the current financial year, all efforts are being made to ensure that rehabilitation of the road is done in the 2014 / 15 financial year. The MEC will pronounce the plans for the provincial road network during the 2014 / 15 policy and budget speech." Consideration was given to R36, 540, 577 and D212 at the meeting, which includes: Safety interventions: mines currently have a quarterly meeting with Mpumalanga and Limpopo Road Safety Councils, Provincial Traffic Departments and respective Road Departments. The vehicle counts done put even more focus on the urgency of road repair: Two Rivers Platinum has conducted seven day road counts twice on the R577 and the D212 and once on the R555, R540 and R36. R577 total 2983 per day and long heavy loads, 240 per day. D212 total 2607 per day and long heavy loads, 280 per day. D540 total 6012 per day and long heavy 524 per day. A collective action plan for sustainable solutions was discussed, possible solutions in the future: •Interventions include limit axle mass on the R540 as well as the Lydenburg / Sabie roads. •Establish a short term, private road maintenance unit to assist in fill and patch for the D212, R577 and R36. •Research a rail road solution using the extensive facilities at Waterval Boven. •Rebuild the D212, portion of the R577 and the R36 in the medium long term. The Eastern Chrome and Platinum Mining development centres around the towns of Lydenburg, Steelpoort and Burgersfort with major investors such as African Rainbow Minerals, Assore, Glencore, Xstrata, Samancor, Northam Platinum and other role players need to be present. The NDP will shape budget allocation over the next 17 years. The key to future growth is infrastructure development. Leveraging infrastructure more effectively is the best way of obtaining more value from mining as well as agriculture. To support economic growth we need to maintain and expand transport, energy, water and telecoms with our present transport challenge looming largest in the Tubatse and Thaba Chweu Municipalities, more specifically: •R36 provincial road between Lydenburg and Bambi. •R540 provincial road between Lydenburg and Belfast. •R577 provincial road between Lydenburg and Steelpoort and D212 district road. The ore carrier routes originating in Steelpoort / Burgersfort have as destinations: The smelters in Middelburg, Lydenburg, Steelpoort and Machadodorp, the railheads in Polokwane and Burgersfort/ Steelpoort, the Maputo and Richards Bay harbours. The present rail capacity is very low at 10% of requirement and is too costly for low price commodities such as chrome concentrate, especially in a low commodity price cycle, leaving 90% to road freight. The mountains limit the number of trucks on this rail link and the fact that it is a diesel rail line, adds to the high rail bound cost on this road. The collective transport infrastructure for the Eastern Chrome Corridor and its rural surrounds is a critical best choice for use of limited resources. The rail and road combination with the steep ascent from Steelpoort to Waterval Boven undertaken by road and thereafter transferred to the rail for Maputo with underutilized capacity in Waterval Boven shows promise. Currently the tonnage is 2-2.5 million tonnes per annum and this is estimated to grow to 3 million tonnes per annum in the next two years.

THE Lydenburg BNI Chapter opened their new year on a high note at their new gathering venue, Oom Andries, at the Spur Centre. Rev Kgosi Hendricks from the St John's Anglican Church addressed this dedicated business marketing group about priorities in life and business. He encouraged members to live up to BNI's motto of ethical values and givers who gain. CRIME IN OUR REGION:

THE trial of a Mpumalanga man accused of raping five women and robbing three o t h e r p e o p l e h a s b e e n postponed to May by the Nelspruit Regional Court. "We have another matter on trial and we cannot proceed with this case," said the Magistrate. He apologised to the witnesses in c o u r t f o r t h e d e l a y a n d postponed the matter to 5 May. A man, 27, was arrested on 22 May 2011, following a tip-off from one of his alleged victims. He has pleaded not guilty to five counts of rape and three counts of robbery. He will remain in custody. The court heard that in Apr i l 2011, he a l legedly attacked and raped five women, aged between 21 and 27. That year he also allegedly attacked and robbed two other people. He allegedly committed the first robbery the previous year. The crimes were allegedly committed in villages around Hazyview.

• Two traffic officers have been arrested for fraud and theft at Machadodorp, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday.The officers and another two men were arrested and released on warning on Monday.Colonel Leonard Hlathi said police saw a refrigerated truck stationary at the side of the road on Monday evening. The traffic officers, who were on duty, were interacting with the driver."They noticed a transaction between the traffic officials and the truck d r i v e r s , i n w h i c h a n unknown box was handed to t h e t r a f f i c officials."The box was later found to c o n t a i n r e f r i g e r a t e d chicken meat.The four men are expected to appear at theMachadodorp P e r i o d i c a l Court during January.

WHEN the ANC embarked on renaming existing towns and streets (which they haven’t planned), shortly after 1994, I was one of the people protesting against that course of action. I suggested that they can and must name their new developments, new roads, dams, bridges, power stations and other flagship projects etc. after their leaders and mentors. That would have created their very own proud legacy and also preserved that of ours as well. I thought that would be nation building.

However, I now fully agree that they should rename everything. After 20 years of utter neglect and contempt for the people, we now have an educational system that promotes pupils who do not know 70% of the questions in an exam. We have young people who cannot read or write or calculate, with matric certificates. So rename schools after Angie Motshekga, Kader Asmal etc. We have a health system where people die in hospital passages due to a lack of interest from health officials. Filthy hovels without medicine and sanitation. With beetroot to treat HIV patients and doctors explaining a stroke due to too much “thinking”. Rename the Tonga hospital after Thabo Mbeki and the Lydenburg hospital after another struggle

hero.Let us rename the R36 road from the N4 via Bambi, Badfontein, Lydenburg and Ohrigstad the Jacob Zuma motorway. And the R37 from Lydenburg to Burgersfort should be named the Kgalema Mothlante highway. Rename the potholed streets of Lydenburg after struggle heroes, because we struggle to drive on them. And while you are at it, rename the dump sites, the sewage works and other non functioning infrastructure after useless cadres, municipal Mayors and Managers as well.I don’t want to see the names of great and true creators of development and a rich and proud history coupled to the absolute mess which we call health, education, conservation and town streets that we have today. The ANC legacy after 20 years is a national disgrace and an embarrassment to all decent people. Viva ANC viva!

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes

JOHNNY REINDERS van Johnny’s Pub / The Vine Restaurant op Pilgrimst Rest het hierdie naweek sy 70ste verjaardag gevier. Gebore op 15 Januarie 1944, besit Johnny die gewilde restaurant al 20 jaar. Hy self is al 40 jaar op Pilgrims Rest. Van sy gaste het ingesluit Ian Patterson die agterkleinkind van die beroemde “Wheelbarrow Patterson”, een van die stigters van Pilgrims Rest. Ian het die musiek vir die aand gemaak en die gaste op uitstekende wyse vermaak. Ander gaste het ingesluit Faantjie Stydom, (40 jaar al vriende met Johnny), Mike Goodwin van The Printing Shop, Riaan Krog en Susan Ferreira van Lydenburg en Johan Gouws van The Lamb and Ale op Ohrigstad. THIS is the current state of the Lydenburg Municipal waste dumping site. By Friday, access to the site was impossible, as there is no compacting or any management being done at all and the place is full to capacity. This is due to the fact that the Municipality is not paying contractors to do the work.So residents had to start dumping refuse even before you reach the railway track, outside of the designated site. This situation prevailed through Saturday and Sunday, when these pictures were taken.The area stinks, adult people, children and birds all scavenge the place and there is a massive fly problem. The entire situation is totally unacceptable,

illegal and is a huge health risk.According to reliable sources, the municipality (when it actually operates the site) does so without the required licenses. This particular site has reached capacity more than six years ago and should have been closed and rehabilitated. A new site should have been approved and developed back then.The residents of Lydenburg demand that action be taken urgently on this matter.Andre Coetzee.

WHILE improving its quality, appeal and market share in recent years, Kia has made tremendous strides in transportation technology as well, and aims to further that at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with new telematics and infotainment systems.

Among the new tech Kia will be displaying at CES this year will be several future advancements to its UVO system. The User-Centered Driver (UCD) concept centers around a widescreen head-up display that projects vital data such as speed, navigation directions and traffic information across 18 inches above the instrument cluster, joined by a 12.3-inch TFT display that presents the information in a 3D view, wireless mobile charging and hand-gesture recognition.

The In-Vehicle Information (IVI) concept uses a multi-display system (based around a 20-inch multi-touch center-console display) that synchronizes with a tablet or smartphone to interface with the concierge service, social networking, parking assist and smart radio functions. The system also enables vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and HD wireless connectivity.

A separate display previews how UVO will work with upcoming electric vehicles. Kia will also showcase the Cub concept at CES, marking the North American debut of the concept car that debuted at the Seoul and Shanghai Motor Shows last year.

A new Opel Astra GTC is now available in Europe with an all-new 155kW 1.6 engine that can take it to 230km/h.

GMSA says the car "is under consideration" for sale in South Africa.

First seen in the Cascada convertible, the four-cylinder unit allows the GTC to reach 100km/h in 7.3sec and achieve a top speed of 230km/h, making it the fastest non-VXR model in the Astra range.

Peak power and torque are up by 30% over the previous 1.6 turbo, yet fuel consumption of 5.5 litres/100km on the Euro combined test - a 13% reduction - and emissions of 154g/km.

The new engine, Opel says, brings sector-leading refinement to the Astra GTC range. "It is the only unit in its class to have two balancing shafts for smooth running and a number of sound engineering measures have been made to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.

An extra R15 000 on the (UK) vehicle price of about R350 000 will add an Intellilink infotainment system that includes satellite navigation, voice control, Bluetooth phone connection and audio connectivity, picture viewer and Gracenote album art, all through a high-resolution 18cm touch screen.

This top-of-the-range Navi 950 IntelliLink contains street-level mapping with updates downloadable via USB. Drivers can also have incoming text messages read to them and integrating their smart phone's voice recognition functions.

Opel's UK's (Vauxhall) Stuart Harris said: “We’ve strengthened our Astra GTC offering with a strong and powerful 1.6-litre petrol engine and the cutting-edge Intellilink infotainment system.

"We're really throwing down the gauntlet to UK coupe-sector rivals with these enhancements.”

THE venerable K2700 which Kia launched locally in 2001, was and still is very well received for a vehicle which hasn’t been tinkered with too much since its introduction. Now, Kia Motors South Africa has launched an alternative, the K2500.

The K2500 can be distinguished from its older sibling though the use of minor styling changes, such as a body-coloured front bumper, and the use of a single wheel on each side of the rear axle instead of two.

The K2500 will only be available in Workhorse Dropside guise (and

boasts a 1 000 kg loading capacity), whereas the older K2700 also comes in the company’s Tipper and Chassis Cab form. But what the K2500 does have, is a new 2,5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel motor that produces 96 kW at 3 800 r/min and 255 N.m of torque between 1 500 and 3 500 r/min. Those figures are sent to the rear wheels via a new six-speed manual transmission.

In the cabin, the K2500 is rather similar to the specification of the K2700. But what distinguishes the newcomer is the standard fitment of remote central locking over and above the adjustable head restraints, electric windows, height adjustable-headlamps and steering column as well as a full-size spare wheel.

“This new model offers the consumer the same versatile solution as the K2700 but the new turbo-charged diesel engine offers a noticeable power lift, and is sure to expand this tough bakkie’s great value proposition, says Kia Motors South Africa marketing director, David Sieff.

Priced from R215 995, the K2500 comes standard with a three year / 60 000 km service plan and a three year / unlimited km roadside assistance programme and is backed by a five year / 150 000 km warranty.

CHEVROLET het onlangs sy gewilde Cruze met ’n wilde 1400 turboenjin uit die Opel Astra, toegerus. Ons het dié motor hierdie week onder hande gehad. Gereelde lesers sal onthou dat ons al die 1.6 petrol, die 1.8 petrol luikrug en die 2.0 diesel sedan getoets het. In al die gevalle was ons beïndruk met die motor se ruimte (spasie) en vlakke van toerusting, maar veral met sy padgedrag, stabiliteit en hantering.In ons toetsverslae met beide die 1.6 en 1.8 petrolmodelle het ons ook gesê dat die motor meer krag nodig het as jy haastig raak. Om dié rede was ons uiters beïndruk met die tweeliter diesel, wat reg laat geskied het aan die res van hierdie uitstekende voertuig.Nou is hier ’n ander ding. Aanvanklik het ek gedink nee, die Cruze het ietwat gesukkel in 1.6 petrol weergawe, so ’n 1.4 petrol sou malligheid wees. Toe nie. Die 1.4 turboenjin is net so uit die Astra gelig en ’n Chev strikdassie op die klepdeksel vervang Opel se weerligstraal. Wat ’n enjin! Toegerus met ’n sesspoed handratkas, loop hierdie Chevrolet Cruze ’n hond uit ’n bos uit!Kom ek verduidelik: Vanaf amper stilstaan, het ons vanaf Laske Nakke bult op die Chevy gelooi en met twee ouens in en die lugversorger aan (dit was warm) is ons die bult bo uit teen amper 150 in vierde, met die toereteller nog nie by die rooilyn nie en nog twee ratte in hand. Daarna is ons rustig Dullstroom se kant toe om te kyk waar die nuutste slaggate is en of die pad skoon is. Teen 120 in sesde draai die enjin teen slegs 2 300 omwentelinge en is daar genoeg krag vir die effense bulte. Hierdie motor gaan uiters ekonomies wees.Na ons omgedraai het, kon ons die motor se bene rek. Teen 160 in sesde draai die enjin slegs 3 400 opm, is doodstil, vas op die pad en ry baie lekker. Toe druk ons hom bietjie, om seker te maak die motor is stabiel en veilig op spoed. Teen 200 was die Cruze steeds rotsvas op die pad en nog steeds doodstil. Wat ’n motor! Onthou ons praat van ’n Chev Cruze. ’n Ruim middelslagmotor met ’n 1400 enjin.Binne is daar alles wat jy verlang in dié klas. Lugversorging, togbeheer (cruise control), elektriese ruite, klankstelsel wat goed werk met iPod en USB in en Bloutand, afstandbeheer op die baie aantreklike kragstuur (wat op-en-af en in-en-uit verstelbaar is) , ritrekenaar, baie netjiese en duidelike instrumentasie, ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, TCS glybeheer (traction control), 6 lugsakke, misligte, sentrale afstanbeheerde sluit, reënsensor ruitveërs, sonbrilhouer, verhitte kragspieëls wat elektries kan wegvou en alarm / imobiliseerder. Opsioneel is klimaatbeheer, leersitplekke, parkeersensors, en ’n elektriese sondak beskikbaar. Daar is ’n eko knoppie wat die motor ligter op brandstof maak en wat die stop / aanskakel funksie aktiveer. Dit is outomaties aan wanneer jy die voertuig aanskakel en as jy stop, sny dit die enjin af. Raak die koppelaar of versneller en dit skakel dadelik weer aan. Ek het die eko knoppie afgeskakel, omdat ek dit so verkies.Alle kontroles is lig om te beheer. Die ratkierie is lekker kort en ratskakeling is goed. Daar is skyfremme op al vier wiele wat uitstekend werk.Daar is ’n 5 jaar / 120 000 km waarborg en ’n 3 jaar / 60 000 diensplan ingesluit.Die bagasiebak kan met die afstandbeheer oopgemaak is, wat lekker is as jou hande vol pakkies is. Die bagasieruim is groot en daar is ’n volgrootte spaarwiel (nie allooi nie). Die motor het 16 duim allooiwiele op en 17 duim wiele is opsioneel beskikbaar, maar ons sal dit nie aanbeveel nie, omdat die rubberprofiel op die bande dan laer gaan wees, wat nie goed is vir ons slegte paaie nie.Beenruimte vir agterste passasiers is goed en daar is ’n sentrale armrus met bekerhouers.Besoek gerus Westvaal Mashishing vir tegniese enjinspesifikasies en al die pryse

op die hele reeks Cruze voertuie en die pryse van die opsie pakket.Ons bevinding: ’n Uitstekende motor. Idiaal vir die gesin of die man wat ekonomie gekoppel met lekker krag soek en langafstande wil ry. Ons enigste kritiek is dat die opsionele sondak baie windgeruis veroorsaak. Results of Mashishing Marathon Club race on 14 December 2013

THE 18th annual Barberton XCM Mountain Bike Challenge is here to stay! January 25th promises to kick off the 2014 cycling calendar with a great new challenge for all cyclists. The "not so delicate" Barberton Mountain Bike Challenge will be a rude awakening for those who committed to eating all the Festive Season treats rather than spending some time in the saddle. This exciting event has grown over the years in popularity resulting into one of the toughest Mountain Bike events in South Africa. The race is open to cyclists of all ages, shapes and sizes, unfit, fit and super fit! The race will consist out of four different categories: • Fun Ride of 20km • Half Marathon of 45km • Full Marathon of 75km and • Ultra Marathon of 120km. All races will start and end at the Barberton High School sports fields. With a festival-like atmosphere, there is much for the fans and supporters to do whilst waiting for the cyclists to return from their thrilling adventure ride. This incredibly scenic trail takes you up the Makhonjwa Mountains with majestic views over the De Kaap Valley, through nature reserves, dams and very close to the Swaziland border.According to Nic Eksteen, President of the Barberton Rotary Club, this race is the perfect opportunity for cyclists to test their fitness and skill. Eksteen is very excited about the changes to the current routes which includes single tracks, guaranteed to make the race more exciting and challenging.
