For just the fourth time in the 40 years of Penn State swimming and div-ing, it welcomed a new head coach. John Hargis took over the program as thefirst new coach in 10 years and led both the men’s and women’s squads tosolid seasons in 2008-09 and enters his third season in 2010-11.

His first year at the helm was a highly successful one, leading both pro-grams to national rankings throughout the season. e women’s program wasas high as 15th heading into the NCAA Championships where six NittanyLions competed along with five on the men’s side. Vincent Reydams, PatrickSchirk, Jason Goldner, Basil Kaaki, and Brian Alden all received HonorableMention All-American to lead the Lions to a 32nd place finish. e womenplaced 38th led by two Honorable Mention All-American finishes from KellyNelson and one from Kaitlin O’Brien.

In addition, the men’s and women’s squads combined to break an aston-ishing 14 school records in Hargis’ first season.

Hargis returned to Happy Valley where he was an assistant coach at PennState from 2003-06 before moving onto Arkansas-Little Rock where he wasnamed head women’s swimming coach in February of 2007. He was also thehead coach and the chief executive officer of the Little Rock Arkansas Dol-phins club swimming program.

“John has demonstrated that he has the ability to continue the success ofour swimming program both athletically and academically,” said Director ofAthletics Tim Curley at the time of his hire. “He has been a swimmer at thehighest level, having won an Olympic gold medal, and he also has a largearray of experience as a coach, both at the collegiate and the club levels. Weare extremely pleased to welcome John and his wife, Lauren, and son Johnback to Happy Valley and are prepared to help him keep our swimming pro-

grams moving forward”“We are delighted to

With Hargis at thehelm, he became just thesecond head swimmingcoach at Penn State sincethe men's and women'sswimming programswere merged into onefollowing the 2000-01season. He is PennState’s fourth headwomen's coach of all-time and just the sixth head coach in men's program his-tory.

“I am glad to be back in the blue and white of Penn State and it is excit-ing to be back in the tradition of excellence that Penn State provides, bothathletically and academically," said Hargis prior to last season. “Both my fam-ily and I are excited to once again be part of the Penn State culture and welook forward to continuing the tradition that has been set by those before usin the swimming program.”

Hargis left his assistant post at Penn State in September of 2006 to takeover the Arkansas Dolphins premier swim club, which was also his formerclub team. In that role, he directed the program to the overall team state longcourse title in 2007, winning both the men's and women's team title for onlythe second time in program history. He also led both the men's and women's

teams to the overall team state short course title in 2008, securing the Dol-phins their first back-to-back combined state titles in their 48 year history.

He joined Arkansas-Little Rock as an assistant coach in November of 2006before being elevated to head coach in February of 2007. While heading theTrojan program, which competes in the Sun Belt Conference, the women'steam was recognized by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association ofAmerica for having a team GPA of over 3.0 in both the fall and spring semes-ters.

While with the Nittany Lions, Hargis was on the staff that led the women'steam to back-to-back Big Ten Championships in 2005 and 2006. He coachedseveral NCAA, Olympic Trials and U.S. Nationals qualifiers and also directedall aspects of men’s recruiting. Hargis was instrumental in helping recruit2008 NCAA Champion Patrick Schirk to Penn State. He also assisted withseveral other aspects and day-to-day operations of the program, including thecreation and implementation of a training regimen for both the men's andwomen's sprinters, breaststroke and IM swimmers.

Prior to arriving at Penn State, Hargis was an assistant coach at the Uni-versity of Nevada at Las Vegas for two years during the 2002-03 season wherehe also coached NCAA, Olympic and U.S. Nationals qualifiers and guidedthe Mountain West Conference Male Swimmer of the Year. He was the headage group coach for the Raleigh Swimming Association club team for two

years prior to his stint at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. Before that,he served for three years as an assistant to the athletic director at his almamater, Auburn University.

A native of Little Rock, Ark., Hargis is a 1999 graduate of Auburn with adegree in health promotion/sports management.

Hargis is one of the most touted swimmers to ever come out of the stateof Arkansas. For the Tigers, he was part of a national championship team in1997 and a member of the 200 medley relay team that broke NCAA, U.S.Open and NCAA Meet records in 1997. He was also a part of the NCAAchampion 400-medley relay team in 1997. A three-time Southeastern Con-ference champion in the 100 butterfly, he also held the SEC record in thatevent and was a 12-time All-American. He owns an Olympic Gold Medal,which he earned at the 1996 Atlanta games as part of the U.S. 400 medleyrelay team. He also won the 100 fly at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1996. Har-gis was inducted into the Arkansas State Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001and was selected as one of Arkansas' 100 Greatest Athletes of all-time.

Hargis resides in State College with his wife, Lauren and son, John.

Craig Brown, a two-time Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year, enters his25th season at the helm of the Nittany Lion divers.

Brown has consistently produced quality divers that have representedPenn State at the conference and national level. Since taking over the divingprogram in 1986, he has sent 18 divers to the NCAA Championships, withat least one in all but four seasons since 1988. In 1995 and 1998, he coachedthree divers to the NCAA Championships. He helped Chris Devine to theone-meter Big Ten title in 1994 and a third place NCAA finish. Morerecently, he guided Drew Jackson to four consecutive trips to theNCAAs from 1995-98.

Four years ago, he coached Penn State’s first Big Ten divingchampion since Devine in 1994 as Mike Alderman, who grad-uated in 2007, won the one-meter event. Alderman alsoqualified for the U.S. Open Diving Championships that year.en, Alderman wrapped up his career with a pair of top eightfinishes on the springboards at Big Ten’s and once again qualifiedfor NCAA’s. His younger sister, Meg, is a current member of theNittany Lion diving family.

Brown also helped another diver, Adam Pierce, qualify for theNCAA Championships in 2006, where he was Penn State’s lonerepresentative and made the best of it. He placed 15th in thethree-meter diving event to pick up two points for the NittanyLions. Pierce was a two-time NCAA qualifier.

Brown has recently developed Kim Peifer into one of the topdivers in the Big Ten. Peifer walked on to the diving team afterbeing a member of the Penn State track and field team for herfirst two years. She went on to score points on the three-meterboard at Big Ten’s two years ago.

Brown was the 1994 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year andwas also named the 1999 Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year aftercoaching Jaime Jaax to the Big Ten three-meter title, the firstNittany Lion woman to win a Big Ten diving title. Overall,Brown has coached 12 different divers that have qualified forNCAA Championships

Brown headed the men’s and women’s diving programs atPenn from 1983-85 in his first collegiate coaching post.

Prior to his appointment at Penn, Brown coached at Philadel-phia area clubs, including the Warrington Swim and Tennis Club(1982-83), Hatboro-Horsham Aquatic Club (1983), HideawaySwim Club (1980-81), Hatboro Memorial Pool (1976, 78-79)and Hatboro YMCA (1976).

As a diver at Penn State, Brown won the 1981 Eastern Colle-giate Championship in the three-meter springboard and theone-meter springboard in 1979. He was the team’s Most Valu-able Diver in 1978, 1979 and 1981.

As a scholastic diver, Brown was the Pennsylvania state champion in 1977and the Bux-Mont League Champion in 1975 and 1976. He won theYMCA national one-meter championship in 1977 and was the District Ititlist in 1976.

A two-time Junior Olympic finalist, he also earned All-Bux-Mont honorsin soccer and in football as a placekicker.

Brown graduated from Penn State with a degree in EnvironmentalResource Management and worked from 1982-85 as an inventory controland purchasing manager with the Moreland Corporation in Willow Grove,Pa. He also was an assistant quality control manager and production super-visor with Moreland.

Brown has two children, an 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter.

Liz Klink, formerly an assistant coach at Florida State University, is in herthird season as part of the Penn State swimming and diving program.

"Liz is one of the top swimming recruiters in the nation," said head coachJohn Hargis. "She brings a wealth of knowledge with her and, being fromNew Jersey, is well-acquainted with Mid Atlantic aquatics."

In her first season at Penn State, Klink helped lead both Lion squads tostrong seasons. e women finished 38th at the NCAA Championshipswhile the men were 32nd. Also, seven Nittany Lions (Kaitlin O’Brien, KellyNelson, Vincent Reydams, Patrick Schirk, Jason Goldner, Basil Kaaki, andBrian Alden) garnered honorable mention All-American status, Nelson intwo events.

During her tenure at Florida State, Klink coordinated all recruiting,administered the middle-distance training group, organized equipmentorders through Nike and tracked the progress of incoming swimmers. Shecoached the women's swimming team to an Atlantic Coast Conferencechampionship in 2005-06 and the men's squad to an ACC title in 2006-07.Klink also oversaw four Seminole swimmers who were named NCAA All-Americans, including South African Romy Altmann, who placed seventh inthe 200 backstroke at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Klink previously worked at Virginia Tech as an assistant swim coach fromAugust, 2002 through June, 2004. She coordinated all recruiting, oversawpractice groups, organized all travel logistics and managed meet entries.

"Liz communicates well with the athletes," said Hargis. "She coaches andinteracts with a passion for swimming."

A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Klink earned her bachelor'sdegree in elementary educationand math in 2001 and obtainedher master's in elementary educa-tion from Connecticut in 2002.She graduated summa cum laudeand earned numerous academichonors including BIG EASTAcademic All-Star (1998-2001),New England Scholar (1998-2000) and National Golden KeyHonor Society (1999-2001).

In addition to her academicachievements, Klink was a mem-ber of Connecticut's varsityswimming and diving team. Shewas a BIG EAST finalist in the200 and 500-meter freestyleevents in 2000 and 2001. She wasthe university record holder in the500 freestyle, and 400 and 800-yard freestyle relays.

Aaron Mahaney, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Hawaiiat Manoa, will begin his third year as a part of the Penn State swimmingand diving coaching staff.

"Mahaney brings a great knowledge for distance swimming," head coachJohn Hargis said. "He is a young man who is hungry and thirsty for knowl-edge."

Mahaney previously served as the assistant coach at Hawaii dating backto the 2005-06 season. While at Manoa, he coached distance freestyle, but-terfly and individual medley events. Hawaii tied Penn State for 23rd overallat the NCAA Championships in 2008.

A graduate of Big Ten rival Michigan State, Mahaney holds a bachelor'sdegree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports psychology. While at EastLansing, Mahaney was Freshman of the Year and Most Valuable Performer in2002. He also competed in the 2000 and 2004 Swimming Olympic Trials.

Before moving to Hawaii, Aaron was the head intramural swim coach atthe University of Georgia from 2004-05. During that time, he taught as aphysical education substitute teacher at the Clark County School District.

Mahaney began his coaching experience in his hometown of Easton, Pa.,where he was an assistant coach at Lafayette College for two years.

"Aaron has great contacts and uses his peers nationwide to learn," saidHargis. "He is a Pennsylvania native who knows the state well and should bea valuable tool in recruiting."

Mahaney is a two-time swimming scholastic All-American. He is a regis-tered coaching member of USA Swimming.

ad Schultz is in his second season as Penn State’s assistant coach for the2010-11 season. Schultz brings a wealth of experience to the Nittany Lionprogram, including assistant coaching duties at fellow Big Ten rival OhioState.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to work at a great university like PennState," said Schultz. "ey have a rich tradition of athletics and great aca-demics. It will be a fun experience."

"ad brings everything we look for in an assistant," said Nittany Lionhead coach John Hargis. "He's obviously got the college experience. Lately,he's been working with some of the best swimmers in the world. Just to seethe levels he's worked and all the success he's had at those levels makes himan exciting addition to our staff."

Most recently, Schultz served as assistant coach and senior division leaderat SwimMac in Charlotte, N.C. While there, he performed a variety of taskswhile working with the Age-Group swim program consisting of over 750swimmers. He worked with three members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team,four from the 2004 squad and eight from the U.S. National Team Qualifier.

Prior to starting at SwimMac in 2007, he served as Aquatics Director andhead coach at Brunswick YMCA in Brunswick, Ga. He was in charge of allaspects of a swim program that featured over 50 swimmers.

Schultz's extensive swimming experience includes collegiate coachingexperience at Ohio State from 2000-02. He served as an assistant coach forthe Buckeyes, specifically with the men's program. While there, the programhad four NCAA Qualifiers,three school records and eightAcademic All-Americans. Healso helped recruit 15 HighSchool All-Americans.

His collegiate coachingexperiences goes back to 1998when he was an assistant coachat Clemson University. Work-ing with the men's andwomen's swim programs, hehelped lead the Tigers to eightNCAA Qualifiers, two ACCrecords, 10 school records andeight Academic All-Americanswhile bringing in 22 HighSchool All-Americans.

Schultz started coaching in1991 at the Ohio State Uni-versity Swim Camp undernational team coaches BillWadley and Jim Montrella. Healso worked the same camp in1992, `96 and '99.

Aaron Workman joins the Nittany Lion staff for his first season in 2010-11. Workman comes from an established background including his mostrecent position as assistant swim coach and recruiting coordinator at theUniversity of Pittsburgh.

"As a head coach, you always keep [someone like Aaron] on your radar,"said Hargis. "I've had my eye on Aaron for the last three years he's been atPitt. He's recruited back-to-back top-25 classes. His sprinters have contin-ued to compete well and continued to improve."

During his time at Pittsburgh, Workman was in charge of assisting in allaspects of team preparation, including practices and weight training. As therecruiting coordinator, he was able to sign two top-25 and honorable men-tion classes.

For the past three years, Workman has also been involved with Team Pitts-burgh Aquatics. While there, Workman organized all aspects of one of thelargest meets in Allegheny Mountain Swimming and developed practiceagendas for the competitors.

Before working at Pittsburgh, Workman held the same duties as assistantswim coach and recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 2005-2007. Hehelped coach his team to three straight Mountain West Conference cham-pionships while also recruiting the 18th best men's recruiting class in thecountry. Not only did his teams have a great athletic track record, but theyalso excelled out of the pool, consistently ranking in the top 20 academicallyin the nation.

Workman's college work began early as he served as the assistant swimcoach at Wittenberg University from 2003-2004 and the head swim coachat Hollins University from 2002-2003. At Wittenberg, Workman coachedtwo NCAA All-Americans and a top 20 Division III team. Not only hasWorkman succeeded as a coach, he was also a very successful swimmer at theUniversity of Kentuckywhere he graduated in2001 with a Bachelor ofScience in Broadcasting.Workman was a four-time All-American,four-time academic All-SEC performer and anacademic All-Americanin 2001.

"[Aaaron has] helpedtake that program to thetop of the Big East,"said Hargis. "As a youngguy, he's someone whohas always intrigued me.We feel very lucky tohave him."
