Newberry College announced on June 11, 2010, that Dr. V. Scott Koerwer, a senior business school administra-tor, entrepreneur and authority on leadership and strategy, will be-

come the College’s 21st president, effec-tive July 1. He follows Dr. Mitchell Zais, who has served as Newberry’s president since 2000. [Dr. John H. Hudgens II has been serving as acting president since February, while President Zais has been on a planned leave of absence.] The move begins a new era for the Col-lege, which has a long tradition of provid-ing educational opportunities for diverse populations of students from around the state and the nation. Newberry is known for the close, personal attention it offers to each of its more than 1,000 under-graduate students. In Dr. Koerwer, the board has selected an entrepreneurial leader who has closely studied the in-terconnections of professional, business

and liberal arts education and has de-veloped innovative academic programs and strategic alliances across university campuses and with universities around the world. Currently Deputy Dean and Clinical Pro-fessor of Management at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Busi-ness, Dr. Koerwer brings a broad range of educational perspectives to the New-berry presidency. He was educated at a leading liberal arts institution, Muhlen-berg College and went on to receive his Master’s Degree from a leading science and engineering university, Lehigh Uni-versity. He was awarded his doctorate in education from the internationally recog-nized University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Ko-erwer is also an alumnus of the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern Univer-sity. In addition to the Moore School, he has served as an executive at two lead-ing schools of management: the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. In accepting the Board’s selection, Dr.

Koerwer commented on his appointment. During the course of his 20-year career in business and higher education, Dr. Koerwer has established a notable track record of collaboration and accomplish-ment at each institution he has served. Most recently at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business, he managed a budget in excess of $50M, and led numerous redesign and develop-ment initiatives including the school’s first inclusive, comprehensive strategic plan-ning process. Continuing his record of es-tablishing international partnerships, he forged an alliance with the University of Tikrit in Iraq, laying historic groundwork for building a new education system for the nation as it works to establish a new education and social infrastructure. Dr. Koerwer co-launched three compa-nies including a software company fo-cused on knowledge management and back office operations for higher educa-tion clients and a boutique consulting and training firm. As a husband and fa-ther, he enjoys spending time with his family --including wife, Christine, and two daughters, Rachel and Julia.

Brad Edwards was introduced as Athletic Director at Newberry College on May 18, 2009.

Prior to com-ing to Newberry, he served as vice pres-ident of IMI Resort Holdings, Inc., after

five years as associate athletic director at the University of South Carolina. He served as USC’s senior associate ath-letic director from July 2003 to March 2006.

Edwards, who played free safety for the Gamecocks and played in the Na-tional Football League for nine seasons, is currently responsible for the recruit-

ing, hiring and training of sales execu-tives and sales directors for IMI’s resort properties across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. He also as-sists with the IMI PGA Tour Player pro-gram and was responsible for the con-struction of IMI’s New York City office.

In his time at South Carolina, he served as the athletic department’s chief financial officer and was respon-sible for the day-to-day oversight and management of all business functions. He oversaw the department’s budget, business operations for Williams Brice Stadium, the Colonial Center and Sarge Frye Field, new facility design, develop-ment, and construction, all venue con-cessions and food service, department advertising and multimedia rights, coor-

dination of bowl travel, and many other operational aspects of the department. He also assisted in securing major finan-cial gifts and executive suite licenses.

He joined the South Carolina athletic department as assistant athletic direc-tor for development in July 1999 and was named associate athletic director in October 2001. He transitioned to senior associate athletic director in July 2003.

Edwards played free safety in the NFL for nine seasons after being drafted in the second round of the 1988 draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He also played with the Washington Redskins and At-lanta Falcons and was a starter with the Redskins’ Super Bowl XXVI champion-ship team.

The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team enters the 2010 season with high hopes after wrapping up the 2009 cam-

paign with a school best 13-5-2 overall record, earning their first ever trip to the NCAA post-season tournament.

The team kicks off the 2010 schedule with a bang on September 3 against a nationally ranked top five opponent Columbus State be-fore taking on 2007 national champ, the Univer-sity of Tampa on September 5. Both games will be a part of the Columbus State Tournament in Columbus, Ga.

“This season I have put added emphasis on our strength of schedule in hopes of preparing us for the next level in the national tournament,” said third year head coach Karrie Miller. “Our team goals this year are to win the SAC regu-lar season championship, to win the SAC con-ference tournament championship, get back to the NCAA tournament and make it past the first round.”

With just two seniors returning to the team in Amberly Fowler and Christen Chestnutt, Miller will depend on the underclassmen to lead the way. Miller brings in four newcomers, Kristen Stensholt, a junior transfer from Delta State University, Theresa Berman, a sophomore from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and fresh-man Lauren Singleton from Charleston, S.C., and Bianca Warder from Irmo, S.C.

“I didn’t recruit a lot of numbers,” added Mill-er. “But I recruited players who will make an im-mediate impact. I chose quality over quantity. I also have a lot of faith in our returners and their experience.”

In 2010 the team brings back NSCAA All-Southeast Region second team and first team All-South Atlantic Conference goalie Emily Rhoades, who broke three school records this past year including goals against average in a season (0.70), shutouts in a season (9) and ca-reer shutouts (14).

“Obviously Emily had a phenomenal year last year,” said Miller of her goalkeeper. “And because of that, she has a lot of expectations on her this season. I feel very confident in her ability and leadership to exceed those expecta-tions.”

On the offensive side of things, Fowler, the Wolves’ top goal scorer from 2009 with six, will make her way back to the field as will Katie Sas who finished up the year with three goals of her own. The team will miss the offensive power of last year’s seniors Michaela Peach and Laura Mottel.

Rhoades was named to the first team All-SAC preseason roster with Fowler and teammate Me-gan Douglas making the second team roster.

The women will open up the home portion of their schedule on September 8 at 3 p.m. against Limestone. The Wolves will then hit the road for two matches against West Georgia and North Alabama before kicking off the confer-ence schedule with a five game home stand on September 18. The home games include SAC foes Lincoln Memorial, Anderson, Mars Hill, Tusculum and Wingate.

Newberry will then travel away from home for five straight matches starting on October 9 when they play Erskine. Following the game with the Flying Fleet, the scarlet and gray will take on Catawba, Lenoir-Rhyne, USC-Aiken and Brevard.

The Wolves will return home for their final non-conference contest against Pfeiffer on Oc-tober 26 before wrapping up their regular sea-son schedule against SAC defending champ Carson-Newman on October 30.

The conference championship first round of games will take place on November 2 with the semi-finals and finals November 5 and 7 at Rock Hill.

Karrie Miller enters her third year as head coach of the Newberry women’s soccer program after a suc-cessful 2009 season in which she brought her team to the school’s first ever NCAA post-season tournament appearance and placed three players on the All-South Atlantic Conference

team, picking up a Newberry record 13 wins along the way.During Miller’s first year at the helm in 2008 she led the

team to an 8-9-1 overall re-cord and a 4-4 mark in SAC play, guiding three players to spots on the All SAC first and second teams.

Miller arrived at Newberry with eight seasons of NCAA Division I head coaching experience, all in the state of South Carolina. She was the inaugural head coach for the programs at Charles-ton Southern University and Coastal Carolina University.

Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Behavioral Science from Erskine College in Due West, S.C., in 1990 and then graduated from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C., with a Masters degree in Physical Education in 1992.

While at Erskine, she was a three-time NAIA All-American for the Lady Fleet and made the NAIA All-East Team four times. Miller was also selected to the NAIA All-Tournament National Team in 1987 and 1989. She was inducted into Erskine’s Athletic Hall of Fame during the fall of 2001.

Miller began her college coaching career at Gardner-Webb,

where she served as an assistant coach from 1990 to 1992. She then accepted the position of head coach at Charleston South-ern.

After spending the 1992-93 academic year preparing the Lady Buccaneer program for competition, Miller led the squad to a combined 24-13-1 record over the next two seasons. In Charleston Southern’s first year of competition and her first as a head coach, Miller was named the Big South Conference Co-Coach of the Year.

After her success at Charleston Southern, Miller accepted an assistant coaching position at South Carolina and helped guide the Lady Gamecocks through their first two seasons of competi-tion. She then moved to Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide to the Western Division Championship in the Southeastern Confer-ence and a bid to the 1998 NCAA Tournament.

In 1999, Miller returned to the Palmetto State to begin the women’s soccer program at Coastal Carolina University in Con-

way, S.C. She served as head coach through the 2005 season, earning a 47-50-16 record in six seasons in charge of the Lady Chan-ticleers.

She was also named Big South Conference Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2003 for a total of three BSC Coach of the Year awards. Her 2003 squad finished with a record of 10-9-2 over-all and were the Big South regular season champions.

Miller’s Coastal squads were named an Academ-

ic All-American team by the NSCAA in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Throughout her coaching career, Miller has been heavily in-volved with the Olympic Development Program in both South Carolina and Alabama, serving as the Program Director in South Carolina from 1995 to 1998.

She was the founder and director of the Karrie Miller Women’s Soccer Camp from 2000 to 2006, and has served as co-director for multiple camps throughout the state.

2009 NEWBERRY WOMEN’S SOCCER

The 2009 Newberry College women’s soccer team marked a new high in the school’s record book as they put up 13 wins en route to the scarlet and gray’s first ever NCAA post season tourna-ment appearance.

The campaign kicked off with a bang as Newberry won its first six of seven contests, five of which were shut outs thanks to Na-tional Soccer Coaches Association of America Women’s Division II All-Southeast Region second team goalie Emily Rhoades. Rhoades was the first Newberry College player to receive such an honor.

The All-South Atlantic Conference goalie went on to shatter numerous school records with her nine shut outs in 2009, moving her career total to a school best 14, she also holds the lowest goal against average of 0.70 and lowered her career average to 0.92, also a Newberry record.

Newberry picked up its first conference win on Sept. 16 at Mars Hill with a 3-0 victory. The women went on to put Brevard away 5-0, hold Wingate to a 0-0 draw and take down Catawba 1-0, putting their early conference record at 3-0-1 before taking their first SAC loss to Tusculum 1-0.

The women ended the regular season the same way they start-ed it, with a string of wins, going 5-1 to finish out the schedule.

Moving on as the number three seed in the Food Lion SAC tournament Newberry dropped its opening round game to number six seed Lenoir-Rhyne on penalty kicks.

Despite the first round heartbreaker Newberry went on to play in the NCAA tourney where they fell to Tusculum in Jefferson City, Tenn. 2-1 after a come from behind rally fell short.

Rhoades ended the year being named to the All-SAC first team

while teammates Michaela Peach and Sara Geisman earned sec-ond team honors.
