On May 19, 1992, Dr. Angelo Armenti, Jr. was appointed by the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education as the sixth president of California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. He holds a B.S. degree in Physics from Villanova University, and MA and Ph.D. degrees from Temple University in special and general relativity, respectively. He had a distinguished 20-year career at Villanova University prior to becoming president of California University. At Villanova he served as professor of physics, chair of the department of physics, Dean of University College, and Director of Planning. In addition to scholarly publications in scientific journals, Dr. Armenti received the Lindback Foundation Award for

Distinguished Teaching in 1978, and was named an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 1992, one of only thirty-two individuals selected nationally for this recognition. His book, The Physics of Sports, commissioned by the American Institute of Physics, remains in print since its initial publication in 1992. Since Dr. Armenti’s arrival at California University in 1992, applications have increased by 90%; average SATs have increased by 113 points; FTE enrollments have increased by 43%; and four-year graduation rates have increased by 94%. Many new academic programs have been initiated including: Master of Social Work (MSW); Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT); Master of Science in Multi-Media Technology; Physical Therapy Assistant; Sports Management; Graphic Design, Computer Engineering Technology, Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Music Technology and Nursing Administration. Other University accomplishments since his arrival as president include: creation of an Athletic Hall of Fame; winning the Dixon Trophy as well as three National championships (two in women’s softball and one in women’s basketball); a successfully completed $13 million (first ever) capital campaign; a second capital campaign that is currently on schedule to reach its $35 million goal; a twenty-fold increase in endowment funds; the adoption by the University of the core values of Integrity, Civility, and Responsibility; the adoption of a University Bill of Rights and Responsibilities; the creation of the University Forum—a new governance structure; adoption of a new general education curriculum; implementation of a $200 million master plan, including: the building of the Eberly Science and Technology Center, the Kara Alumni House, the Duda Classroom Building, a 6,000 seat Convocation Center, and six modern new residence halls; the renovation or expansion of numerous other buildings on campus; and the creation of Global Online, the University’s internet-based outreach to some 2,000 students from around the world. Dr. Armenti has been active with the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, and has served as Campaign Chair and President of the Mon Valley United Way. In 2001, he became a Certified Covey Trainer of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He is a member of the board of directors of the Washington County Redevelopment Authority, a member of the board of directors of the Greater Pittsburgh council of Boy Scouts of America, and Chair of the Commission of Presidents of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. He is married to the former Barbara Malinowski and, together, they have five grown children and nine grandchildren. His avocations include piano, photography and sailing.

Welcome to California University of Pennsylvania and another exciting season of Vulcan men’s basketball. I am confident that Coach Bill Brown, his staff and the players will continue to build upon the basketball tradition and make this a year to remember. This was a year of remarkable achievements at Cal U. In the past 12 months our academic offerings have been strengthened and expanded. Our beautiful campus continues to evolve, and our enrollment continues to grow. Our athletic teams won statewide and regional titles. Cal U finished in the Top 15 in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings for an impressive fourth-consecutive year. During the 2009-10 academic year Cal U’s second place- finish was the highest by a PSAC school since the Directors’ Cup was initiated prior to the 1995-96 academic year. We are very proud of our student-athletes, coaches and many individuals behind the scenes who are responsible for this magnificent accomplishment. I am particularly proud of our student-athletes who perform well not only on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During the 2010-11 academic year, a total of 225 California University of Pennsylvania student-athletes, representing all sports, were named to the Spring 2011 edition of the Vulcan Athletic Director Honor Roll after a record 245 student-athletes earned the honor during the Fall 2010 semester. For the 10th-consecutive semester, the Cal U athletic programs compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher. In addition, a combined 155 student-athletes from Cal U representing all sports (fall, winter and spring) were named PSAC Scholar-Athletes for the 2010-11 academic year. Our athletes have put in hundreds of hours of practice, and their hard work and dedication make them winners regardless of the score. The same can be said of the coaching staff, whose devotion to their sport and their players is an inspiration. The mission of Cal U is to build character and build careers. While the formal part of the education occurs in classrooms, laboratories and internship sites, the other part of a college education takes place in residence halls, the Natali Student Union and in various sport venues, such as the new Convocation Center. Men’s Basketball and our other athletic programs provide students with an experience that helps them to learn and to grow in ways that will benefit them the rest of their lives. Teamwork is important not only on the field, but in the boardroom, the operating room and in the classroom. Many of our alumni who were student-athletes during their time here have distinguished themselves in endeavors far removed from their sport, but they have carried with them the important life lessons they have learned on the field and from their coaches, their teammates and even their opponents. I hope that you enjoy the 2011-12 season and that you will support all of these young athletes enthusiastically.

UNIVERSITY PROFILEABOUT US California University of Pennsylvania, a comprehensive regional institu-tion of higher education and a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is a diverse, caring and scholarly learning community dedi-cated to excellence in the liberal arts, science and technology, and profession-al studies that is devoted to building character and careers, broadly defined. The University is inspired by its core values of Integrity, Civility and Respon-sibility and is guided by its Bill of Rights and Responsibilities: We have the right to safety and security; We have the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of others; We have the right to be treated with respect; We have the responsibility to treat others with respect; We have the right to expect the best; We have the responsibility to give our best; We have the right to be treated fairly; We have the responsibility to treat others fairly.

MISSION: BUILDING CHARACTER AND CAREERS To advance its ultimate mission of building the character and careers of students, the University shall focus its efforts on three goals: student achieve-ment and success, institutional excellence, and community service. These interrelated ends will be facilitated by the following means: high quality fac-ulty, students, programs and facilities. These means, in turn, will be funded through an energetic program of resource acquisition and stewardship.

LEGACY Founded in 1852, and now in its second 150 years of service, the Univer-sity is committed above all to academic excellence and intellectual rigor in the context of personal and institutional Integrity, Civility and Responsibility.

THE CAMPUS Cal U’s 190-acre campus is nestled on a bend of the Monongahela River in the borough of California, Pa., 35 miles south of Pittsburgh. One of the first things you’ll notice when you visit for the first time is the natural beauty. Tree-lined lawns, broad walkways and exquisite landscaping surround restored historic buildings and new residence halls that have been recognized by the National Building Museum as among the finest in the nation. The Arboretum at California University of Pennsylvania is a public garden encompassing our 92-acre lower campus. We’re building an extensive collec-tion that includes examples of nearly every tree indigenous to Pennsylvania. Lovely stained glass windows featuring Pennsylvania wildflowers, which grace the Grand Hall of Old Main, were created by Leslie Parkinson, emeri-tus professor of art. Another favorite site is the Manderino Library Gallery, an intimate space that features exhibitions from the Carnegie Museum of Art and other top museums and private collections. Take time to stroll through our sculpture garden, which features the magnificent “Ascent of Humanity” sculpture near the Duda World Cultures Building. At Cal U, we’re small enough to feel like family, yet large enough to offer variety and diversity. Spend some time getting to know us! Take a virtual tour online, come visit or request information to learn more about campus life at Cal U.

CAMPUS LIFE Cal U is known for its diverse and dedicated student body, nationally rec-ognized housing, recently renovated facilities, varied events and activities and countless opportunities to get involved. You’ll find a strong sense of com-munity and traditions guided by the spirit of service and a sense of pride. In short, you’ll find a home here at Cal U.

LIVING AT CAL U If you are a first-time freshman from outside commuting distance to the University, you will reside in University housing for the first four semesters of your college career as space permits. But you won’t find dorms at Cal U. Here students live “The Suite Life,” enjoying roomy suites in new buildings. All six of Cal U’s residence halls have been built in recent years. Along with comfortable rooms, the halls feature well-designed common areas for social-izing, including lounges with large-screen TVs and DVD players, as well as full kitchen areas and comfortable seating, not to mention rec rooms with ping pong and pool tables. Community assistants serve as leaders and facilitators within each hall. These students (graduate or undergraduate) live on designated floors and as-sist in overall operation. All are available through an on-call system 24 hours a day, with schedules and contact information posted throughout the building. The community assistants dedicate considerable time and effort to develop-ing community. They help students understand and comply with University and residence hall rules, and they plan programs and activities to help make the most of the residence hall experience. Residence hall directors supervise each hall and work to ensure living on campus is productive and safe. These professionals (who have master’s de-grees related to education and student development) live in the halls. The residence hall directors assist individuals and student groups, encourage community development, promote academic success, handle hall conduct is-sues, supervise student staff and act as the liaison for facility issues.

VISIT US It’s never too early to see how you will fit in at California University of Pennsylvania. Throughout the year we host several special events designed for everyone from high school juniors to students who have already applied. You can also schedule an individual visit that includes a meeting with an ad-missions counselor. Individual visits start at the Welcome Center on the first floor of the Eberly Science and Technology Building. This is the place to pick up literature about the University, watch a video and take a campus tour with a student ambas-sador. At the end of the tour, you will sit down with one of our admissions counselors and get answers to your specific questions. Plan to spend about two hours and 30 minutes when you visit, and feel free to bring your family or a couple of friends.

CONVOCATION CENTER

THE CONVOCATION CENTER AT CAL U The Convocation Center at Cal U is the latest addition to the campus of Cal U. The facility is the new home of Vulcan basketball. The arena also will be used for Commencement, convocations and other campus gatherings. Cal U plans to host athletic tournaments, trade shows, job fairs, country music concerts and other public events in this spacious facility. The Convocation Center will be available for executive-level conferencing. Located on the shores of the Monongahela River, just 35 miles from Pittsburgh, it will be the heart of River’s Bend, a full-service conferencing service. The 142,000-square-foot Convocation Center is a model of “smart” technology, the hub of campus activities and a destination for visitors from southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond.

It took approximately two years for this landmark structure to rise at California University of Pennsylvania.

This state-of-the-art building houses a 6,000-seat arena, the largest indoor venue between Pittsburgh and Morgantown, W.Va.

This 142,000-square-foot building gives Cal U much needed space to welcome the families of graduating seniors and master’s degree candidates to enjoy Commencement together in comfortable surroundings.

An 80-foot tower that stands alongside the building announces its high-tech character with scrolling text and digital images displayed along its sides.

The Convocation Center was a $59 million project. Nearly 400 laborers and skilled workers have worked at the Convocation Center site.

Cal U has a long and storied tradition of success. The Vulcans have averaged over 21 wins a season for the past 25 years. During that time, Cal U has won 15 PSAC West titles and earned 12 NCAA Tournament berths with three Elite Eight and two Final Four appearances. Under 16th-year head coach Bill Brown, the Vulcans return a veteran nucleus, and four starters, from last year. The program should also benefit from several transfers that were with the program during the spring semester last year. Perhaps the biggest addition to the Cal U program will be the opening of the state-of-the-art Convocation Center this winter. The facility will feature spacious locker rooms, a premier hardwood court, an 80-foot display tower, among other first-class amenities. On the court, the Vulcans return preseason All-PSAC forward Steve Swiech. Last year, the 6-9 senior led the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and finished third in the league with a .588 field-goal percentage. He also ranked among the team leaders with 5.3 rebounds per game and totaled 22 blocks last season. The backcourt returns virtually intact and will feature an impact with the addition of junior transfer Keith Lowe. Lowe previously played two years at Edison Community College, which is north of Dayton. While with the Chargers, he earned All-America honors and was named the league’s Newcomer and Player of the Year. With Lowe out for the fall season, the offense will again be directed by seniors Douglas Jr. Appiah and C.J. Townes. Appiah displayed tremendous quickness and athleticism in his first season with the program. A native of Toronto, he led the team with 3.2 assists and 1.9 steals per game, while also scoring 6.5 points per game. Townes appeared in 17 games after joining the program midseason. The 6-1 guard features defensive intensity and an accurate shot, making 52.2 percent from the field last season. Cal U features added depth at the guard position with the return of redshirt junior Travon

Vann, and the addition of junior transfer Papa Kote and true freshman Tynell Fortune. Vann started 30 games in his first two seasons before missing last year due to injury. The Maryland native is a key player on the defensive end and also has the ability to be a proven scorer, averaging a career-high 8.6 points per game two years ago. Kote was a member of the Senegal National Team before playing stateside at Carl Albert State in Oklahoma. Fortune, originally from Harlem, was the conference MVP while playing high school at Pocono Mountain West. The Vulcans also return a pair of proven swingmen in senior Chad Tipton and junior Quentin Harding. Tipton posted a breakout season last year, scoring 9.9 points per game and ranking among the league leaders with a .415 three-point percentage. Harding was an explosive, versatile player in his first year with the program. The 6-5 junior ranked third on the team with 11.0 points per game and displayed the ability to score from the perimeter and in the paint. Harding also developed into one of the team’s top rebounders, averaging 5.4 per game. Cal U also will benefit with the addition of another swingman in sophomore Chris Williams, who played scholastically in Philadelphia before playing at a community college last year. With a vacant starting position in the post, a trio of newcomers and senior John Williams will compete for playing time. Williams will miss the first part of the season after playing in all 27 games last year. Junior Mitchell Weedon enters the year with college experience after playing the last two seasons at Frederick Community College in Maryland. True freshman Jeremy Posey joins the program after being the conference MVP while playing scholastically at Huntingdon, east of Altoona. Freshman Shannon Williams possesses ideal size for the post position at 6-8 and 245 pounds. He was a two-time, all-state honorable mention selection while playing at Cass Technical in Detroit. With a bevy of talent, the Vulcans look to make their first season in the Convocation Center a year to remember by again advancing to the post-season.

HEAD COACH

In his 15 seasons as head coach, Bill Brown has continued to enhance the rich history of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program. During his time with the Vulcans, Brown has amassed a record of 304-133 to become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided Cal U to eight 20-win seasons with the Vulcans qualifying for the PSAC Tournament in 11 of 15 seasons and advancing to the ‘State Game’ four times, winning it twice (1999, 2008). The 2007-08 campaign offered Brown and his staff one of the more challenging tasks of his Cal U tenure. Featuring four new starters, the Vulcans registered a 28-6 overall record, won their first PSAC Championship since 1999 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since 1996. The 28 wins were the second-most in school history. Brown has been named the PSAC West Coach of the Year in two of the last five seasons and five times during his 15-year tenure. Prior to his time at Cal U, Brown served as head coach at NCAA Division III Kenyon College for eight seasons. Under his direction, the Lords qualified for the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons after posting 20-plus wins in 1993-94 and 1994-95. In 1993-94, Kenyon won its conference tournament and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament before finishing the year with a 24-4 record. Brown started his career as a head coach at Sacramento State University and coached the Hornets for two seasons during the program’s transition to NCAA Division I. He followed his time at Sacramento State with a season as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee under Don DeVoe. A native of Ohio, Brown started his coaching career at Ohio University after a successful playing career for the Bobcats. As a player, he was a

three-year starter and two-time, all-conference selection for the Bobcats, who won a pair of Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles and appeared in two NCAA Tournaments during his playing career. After four seasons at Ohio as a coach, Brown served a one-year stint as an assistant at Kent State University before accepting the top assistant position with legendary coach Eddie Sutton at the University of Arkansas. His duties included serving as recruiting coordinator, assisting with on-the-floor coaching, academic counseling, scouting and directing the Razorback Basketball Camp. In each of Brown’s five years with the program, Arkansas made NCAA Tournament appearances, won two Southwest Conference Championships, and remained in the Top 20 rankings. In 1984 and 1985, Brown was rated as one of the top five assistant coaches and recruiters in the nation by the Basketball Times. Brown was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Regional Coach of the Year in

both 2007 and 2008, and was selected to serve as head coach in the senior all-star game at the 2007 NCAA Division II Championship Weekend in Springfield, Mass. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Brown has served in every facet of the game of basketball as a player, a coach and an administrator. Brown earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 from Ohio with concentrations in English, Sociology and Social Work. He and his wife Christy reside in California and have two grown children, Aaron and Kerra, and four grandchildren, Jalen, Elijah, Kingston and Aubrey.

When people think of the California University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball program, instantaneously they think of its rich tradition and heritage. Dating back to the inception of the program, sometime around the turn of the 20th century, the men’s basketball program has continuously produced quality young men both on and off the court. During the early years of the program, the game was played much differently than it is today and usually at a slower pace. Points did not come as easy and victories were difficult to attain. However, during the 1923-1924 season, Cal U dealt rival Slippery Rock its only loss of the season with a 25-24 victory. Around 1935, things started to take shape into the direction of the modern-day game. Rivalries started to form in the Mythical State Teachers Conference against Clarion, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Slippery Rock and Edinboro. These early games set the foundation for the heated and lively contests that are now witnessed every year. In 1950, the Mythical State Teachers Conference evolved into the Mythical West Penn Little 10 Conference by adding Lock Haven along with four other colleges. Then just one year later in 1951, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) was founded and now features a staggering 16 teams. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, the sport itself began to advance. More emphasis was being put on athletics in general and the tempo of the game began to get quicker, which resulted in higher-scoring affairs. Duke O’Hara became the first Vulcan to eclipse the 1,000 point total. O’Hara finished his career (1948-1952) at Cal U with 1,116 points and was the first of 32 Vulcans to reach the 1,000-point milestone. During the same time period, Cal U saw many other great players wear the Red and Black, such as Hall of Famers: Lloyd Gilmore, Walt Sigut, Roy Maines and Sebastian “Sibby” Lonigro. Three years after O’Hara became the first Cal U player to score over 1,000 points in a career and set the school’s scoring record, Dick Majernick eclipsed that mark by tallying 1,317 points. Today, Majernick stays actively involved with the men’s basketball program serving a vital role within the 6th-Man Club. Just four years after Majernick set the scoring record, Roger Hotz netted 1,750 points to claim the top spot on the scoring

list. His record stood for almost two decades until Delmer Beshore surpassed that mark in the 1978 season with 1,869 points. Beshore held this record until the current all-time scoring leader Joe Miller scored 1,924 point over his four-year career that ended in the 1989 season. Since Miller set the high mark, Cal U has had 13 players reach the 1,000-point club. Derrick Scott is the most recent Vulcan to have challenged for the record as he totaled 1,661 points from 1993-97. The reason behind the rich history of the men’s basketball program largely relates to the team success Cal U has experienced throughout its heritage. During the years (1962-1978) that Miles Witchey led the Vulcans, he coached numerous Hall of Famers that include Beshore, Bernie Floriani (1970 PSAC Player of the Year), Scott Mountz, former NBA player Ray Green, who still holds the record for most points in a single game with 51, Pat Hobart, and Cleveland Stewart, Jr. Witchey finished his 16-year tenure with a 182-173 record. After Witchey, the Vulcans were guided by Ed McCluskey (1978-80) and Tim Loomis (1981-86). During this time, the program continued to make strides and produce quality student-athletes. Hall of Famer Michael Wilson (1981-85) remains as the fourth all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,732 points. In the 1986-87 season, the Vulcan program took under new leadership when Jim Boone took control of the program. Boone led the Vulcans to

the programs first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in the 1991-1992 season that finished with a final record of 31-2. Boone led the likes of Kenney Toomer, who holds the record for points in a single season with 842 and earned PSAC Player of the Year in 1992, Ray Gutierrez with most three-pointers in a season with 143 and Player of the Year in 1993, Derrick Scott and Robert Jones who are

both top five in rebounding and in the 1,000-point club, Hall of Famer Chad Scott, and Brent Kincaid, who was one of the most accurate shooters in school history. And currently to the school’s all-time winningest coach Bill Brown, who has a career record of 304-133 with two PSAC titles and a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight in the 2008 season. Brown has guided some of the most talented Vulcans in school history, including Ishmieal Kamara and Michael Johnson who earned PSAC Player of the Year awards after the 2003 and 2004 seasons, and Seth Martin the school’s 10th all-time leading scorer, Last year marked the end of an era when the men’s and women’s basketball teams closed out the 2010-11 season in Hamer Hall, as they will have a new home venue for the upcoming years. Many victories were won and memories made in Hamer Hall, but the Vulcan basketball programs will have a new home in the 6,000-seat Convocation Center this season. This new building will be a state-of-the-art facility that will feature premier amenities.

Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into

NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s

estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly

doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division

I level in select sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000

who reside in Pennsylvania. The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
