2011-12 Season PreviewThe High Point University men’s basketball team

looks for continued improvement in its third season under head coach Scott Cherry in 2011-12. This year, the Panthers can rely on eight returners who all have significant playing experience at the Division I level, a luxury the team didn’t have last year. The Panthers were picked sixth in the Big South Preseason Poll but have the potential to finish much higher.

Senior guards Nick Barbour and Shay Shine and junior forward Corey Law headline the Panthers’ list of returners. Barbour earned his second All-Big South honor last year after leading the team with 17.7 points per game. Shine was close behind at 14.3 ppg with a great defensive presence and Law averaged 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds in 21 games before a broken finger ended his season early.

“We bring back our top three scorers and have a lot back in terms of our field goal percentage, rebounding and knowledge of the game and the system,” said Cherry. “Having Nick, Shay and Corey back as leaders is really nice.

“Then you look at guys like Xavier Martin and Jairus Simms at point guard, Travis Elliott who played a lot of minutes as a freshman last year, Justin Cheek who really came on before his ankle injury last year and Georges Massoda who developed so much as the season went on. Add in our newcomers and we have a team that I really feel good about going into the season.

“We have at least two guys at each position and we have experience that we didn’t have last year. I think we can use that to build on the success we had last year advancing

to the Big South semifinals against UNC Asheville.”

The Panthers went 12-19 overall and 7-11 in Big South play with a very young roster last year. Cherry was playing five freshmen on a regular basis and the team’s three seniors – Earnest Bridges, David Campbell and Tehran Cox – didn’t combine for a whole lot of Div. I playing experience. However, that scenario could be a plus going into this season since all of HPU’s young players got significant minutes last year. Although HPU struggled at times, the team had several bright spots to look back on. HPU put together a four-game winning streak late in the season, had a pair of overtime wins and beat Liberty on the road in the Big South tournament for HPU’s first semifinal appearance in three years.

Along with High Point’s eight returners, the Panthers are looking to several newcomers who can make an impact this season.

“We have some newcomers who we’re really impressed with through the preseason,” said Cherry. “Devante Wal-lace has had an excellent fall, he works extremely hard at the wing position. Branimir Mikulic brings a skill set we haven’t had in the past two years – he’s a big man who can step out and shoot threes or post up and score. He also has a little more experience coming from the junior college level. John Brown can really help out on the of-fensive and defensive ends.”

BACK COURTHigh Point features five returners and four newcom-

ers in the back court, an area that the Panthers have been strong in the past several seasons. Barbour and Shine are returning starters who Cherry can count on to score from the perimeter. At the point, the HPU has a pair of experi-enced returners in Martin – a sophomore who played in all 31 games last year – as well as Simms, a junior who has appeared in 60 games over the past two seasons.

“Nick and Shay are arguably the two best guards in the league,” said Cherry. “I feel like they’re Player of the Year candidates and first-team All-Conference candidates along with a few other players. Those two can combine for anywhere from 20 to 40 or more points in any game. As a coach, it’s great to know you have guys you can count on every night for production.

“Our goal is to get both Nick and Shay going on the same night on a consistent basis and have other guys like Xavier Martin or Corey Law scoring around them. Nick and Shay have both developed a lot as leaders and have worked to get their teammates on the same page. We have some experience around them and we don’t have to just rely on them.”

overall games (17.7 ppg) and Big South games (19.3 ppg). He earned All-Big South first team honors in 2009-10 and was an All-Big South second team selection in 2010-11. He has a career average of 16.9 points per game and ranks seventh in HPU history with 1,488 career points entering this season.

Shine ranks among Big South returning leaders in league scoring after averaging 14.3 points on 43.1 percent field-goal shooting in 31 games last year. Along the way, he set HPU single-game records for three-point percentage (6-for-6) and free-throw percentage (10-for-10) and gained fame for his dunk over UNC Asheville’s D.J. Cunningham on Dec. 4, 2010, that was featured as ESPN SportsCenter’s No. 1 play that night. He followed it up with a dunk over Presbyterian’s Walt Allen on Feb. 1 that was SportsCenter’s No. 2 play.

The burden in the back court won’t be relegated just to Barbour and Shine – Cherry has confidence in return-ing point guards Martin and Simms.

“With Jairus Simms and Xavier Martin, I feel really good about the point guard position,” said Cherry. “Those guys combined can help with assists and are threats to score. We saw the shooting ability from Jairus his fresh-man year when he shot 53 percent from three-point range. He is really focused and has gained confidence this year. Xavier can be a really explosive player, he shoots well and can use his speed to get to the basket.”

Simms averaged 4.1 points and 2.2 assists in 18.2 minutes per game as a freshman but saw those numbers decline to 1.5, 1.1 and 9.2 as a sophomore. But with the graduation of starter Tehran Cox, his playing time will likely increase and it will be up to Simms and Martin to run the point. Martin averaged 4.6 points in 13.8 minutes over 31 games as a freshman and scored in double-digits three times.

Cheek is a sophomore shooting guard who showed promise last year before an ankle injury kept him out

of the last six games. In the two games prior to that, he scored seven points against VMI and had six points and six rebounds against Liberty – both on the road. Wallace is a freshman who led Dunbar High School to the Maryland state championship last season, averaging 18 points and five rebounds.

FRONT COURTHigh Point has three experienced forwards on the

roster in Law, Elliott and Massoda, which gives the team a lot more experience than it had down low going into last season. In addition, Mikulic has experience as an incoming junior who played two years at Santa Fe College and aver-aged 8.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season.

“Down low I think we’re going to get production by committee,” said Cherry. “Corey Law is the leader there and has looked very good in the preseason. He is injury free after battling several different things in the last two seasons. He has great athletic ability that helps him score and rebound around the basket and he has improved his shot to add another dimension to his game.”

“Travis Elliott has looked great as well. He’s in better shape and has more confidence. If we can get Travis and Georges Massoda scoring with their backs to the basket and getting rebounds, we’ll be that much better.”

Law averaged 8.9 points and 6.6 rebounds as a red-shirt freshman before posting 8.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season. He’s one of the most athletic players in the Big South.

Elliott played in 31 games with 20 starts as a true freshman last year, averaging 1.7 points and 3.0 rebounds. Massoda is very athletic and is still relatively new to the game after coming to the U.S. from Cameroon. He played in 22 games and averaged 0.7 points and 1.5 rebounds last year. Cherry noted the progress of both players as the season went on, particularly on defense.

With his junior col-lege experience, Mikulic will vie for playing time immediately. The Panthers also have John Brown, who was Florida 1A Player of the Year in 2009-10 and put up gaudy statistics in prep school last year.

“Branimir is very skilled and will be competing for a starting spot right away. John Brown will really help with our scoring,” said Cherry.

The 2011-12 season will be head coach Scott Cherry’s third as leader of the High Point University men’s basketball team. Cherry has a history of winning and stresses an upbeat style of play reminiscent of his coach at North Carolina, Hall of Famer Dean Smith. Cherry led High Point Uni-versity to a six-win improvement in his first season before leading the Panthers to their first playoff victory in three seasons in 2011.

Cherry was a member of four Sweet 16 squads and won a national title as a player at North Carolina. He moved on to 10 seasons as an assistant coach at four differ-ent schools, compiling a 210-107 record. In two transition seasons at HPU, Cherry’s record stands at 27-34. That includes a 21-6 margin at home.

The 11th head coach in the history of HPU, Cherry led HPU to a 15-15 overall record and 10-8 Big South mark in his first season in 2009-10, a stark improve-ment over the team’s 9-21 overall record and 4-14 league mark the year before his arrival. Cherry and his staff brought in a strong initial recruiting class drawing from all around the region and have solidified the roster again heading into the 2011-12 season. The Panthers return their top three scorers from 2010-11, including two-time All-Big South honoree Nick Barbour.

Featuring a style similar to his playing days at UNC, Cherry’s players push the ball up the floor, move the ball quickly and play pressure defense. The results were obvious in HPU’s first season under Cherry, as the team’s scoring offense improved from 64.4 to 72.3 points per game and HPU featured the conference’s leader in three-point per-

centage in overall games (Barbour) and in conference games (Eugene Harris). The Pan-thers featured two of the top shooters in the conference again in 2010-11: Barbour and junior college transfer Shay Shine, who also became nationally known for his dunking ability and earned ESPN’s No. 1 play and No. 2 play on separate occasions.

During his two seasons as head coach, 10 seasons as an assistant coach and four seasons as a collegiate player, Cherry’s teams have made 10 postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournaments and three NIT trips. Under Smith at North Carolina, Cherry was a member of UNC’s 1993 NCAA Championship team.

Cherry joined High Point University after serving as assistant coach to Darrin Horn for two seasons – first at Western Kentucky and, when Horn became head coach at South Carolina, Cherry moved on to become top assistant with the Game-cocks. Alongside Horn at South Carolina in 2008-09, Cherry played an integral part in helping lead the Gamecocks to a 21-10 fin-ish that included a Southeastern Conference Eastern Division title and an appearance in the NIT. At Western Kentucky, Cherry as-sisted the Hilltoppers to a 29-7 mark, a Sun Belt Conference title, a No. 23 final national ranking and a historic trip to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 as a No. 12 seed.

Prior to joining the Western Kentucky staff, Cherry spent seven seasons at George Mason from 1999-2002 and 2003-07 work-ing alongside current Miami head coach Jim Larranaga. During Cherry’s tenure at Mason, the Patriots earned four postseason bids, including two NCAA Tournament ap-

pearances, and went 140-79 (.639) overall and an 82-40 (.672) in the Colonial Athletic Association. George Mason won the CAA regular-season title in 2005-06, earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and made it all the way to the Final Four as a No. 11 seed. On their way to the Final Four, George Mason upset Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and No. 1 seed Connecticut. The Patriots finally lost to eventual national champion Florida and finished the season with a program-best 27-8 record, including a 15-3 CAA mark. The Patriots advanced to the NIT in 2004, earning a pair of victories.

During his first stint with the Patriots from 1999-2002, Cherry helped lead the squad to three straight first- or second-place finishes in the CAA along with a 36-14 mark (.720 winning percentage) in league play. George Mason won the CAA Champion-ship to advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2001 and earned a bid to the 2002 NIT. Cherry spent the 2002-03 season at Ten-nessee Tech, helping the team to 20 wins and the Ohio Valley Conference title game.

A 1993 graduate of North Carolina with a degree in business administration, Cherry earned four letters for the Tar Heels basketball team and served as team captain as a senior. UNC went 107-33 in Cherry’s four seasons, going to the Sweet 16 every year, the Final Four in 1991 and 1993 and winning the 1993 NCAA title. Upon gradu-ation, Cherry played one season of profes-sional basketball for the AEL Basketball Club in Limassol, Cyprus.
