Dear brothers and sisters,

Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This Feast concludes the Octave of Easter, the first week of Easter time in which we celebrate the events of the Res-urrection of the Lord. I want to share with you some of it’s history!

“According to the diary of St. Faustina Kow-alska, an image was revealed to her of the risen Lord, from whose heart shone two rays, one red (representing blood) and the other “pale” (symbolizing water), with the words “Jesus, I trust in you” at the bottom. Faustina wrote in her diary that Jesus told her, “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish.” When she was canonized in 2000 under the direction of fellow countryman Pope John Paul II, he proclaimed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday, thereby widely promoting the devotional practices associated with Faustina’s visions, already popular in many com-munities. St. Faustina, a poorly educated daughter of a humble Polish family, kept a 600-page diary of the appa-ritions she claimed continued for years. Her entries fo-cus on God’s mercy, the call to accept God’s mercy and to be merciful, the need for conversion, and the call to trust in Jesus. It had been Jesus’ own wish, she wrote, to establish a feast day: “I [Jesus] desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls. . . . I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy.” Among the practices associated with the devo-tion are its novena, the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy (a series of prayers organized similarly to a rosary), the Hour of Great Mercy (a time of prayer traditionally cele-brated at 3 p.m.), and the plenary indulgence granted to those who receive the Eucharist and celebrate reconcili-ation on Divine Mercy Sunday. The celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday is an opportunity to reflect on the theme of how God’s mercy can overcome sin and, as the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments states, “a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind [sic] will experience in the years to come.” (h ps://www.uscatholic.org/church/saints-feasts-and-seasons/2011/03/gya-what-divine-mercy-sunday )

Hoy celebramos el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia. Esta fiesta concluye la Octava de Pascua, la primera semana del tiempo de Pascua en la que celebramos los eventos de la Resu-rrección del Señor. ¡Quiero compartir con ustedes parte de su historia!

"Según el diario de Santa Faustina Kowalska, se le re-veló una imagen del Señor resucitado, de cuyo corazón brillaban dos rayos, uno rojo (que representa la sangre) y el otro" pálido "(que simboliza el agua), con las palabras" Jesús, confío en ti ”en la parte inferior. Faustina escribió en su diario que Jesús le dijo: "Prometo que el alma que venerará esta imagen no perecerá".

Cuando fue canonizada en 2000 bajo la dirección de su compatriota papa Juan Pablo II, proclamó que el Segundo Do-mingo de Pascua se conocería en adelante como el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, promoviendo así ampliamente las prácti-cas devocionales asociadas con las visiones de Faustina, que ya son populares en muchas comunidades. Santa Faustina, una hija pobremente educada de una humilde familia polaca, mantu-vo un diario de 600 páginas de las apariciones que, según ella, continuaron durante años. Sus entradas se centran en la miseri-cordia de Dios, el llamado a aceptar la misericordia de Dios y a ser misericordioso, la necesidad de conversión y el llamado a confiar en Jesús. Había sido el deseo de Jesús, escribió, estable-cer un día de fiesta: “Yo [Jesús] deseo que la Fiesta de la Miseri-cordia sea un refugio y refugio para todas las almas. . . . Les es-toy dando la última esperanza de salvación; es decir, la fiesta de mi misericordia ".

Entre las prácticas asociadas con la devoción se en-cuentran su novena, la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia (una serie de oraciones organizadas de manera similar a un rosario), la Hora de la Gran Misericordia (un tiempo de oración tradicional-mente celebrado a las 3 pm) y la indulgencia plenaria otorgado a quienes reciben la Eucaristía y celebran la reconciliación el Do-mingo de la Divina Misericordia. La celebración del Domingo de la Divina Misericordia es una oportunidad para reflexionar so-bre el tema de cómo la misericordia de Dios puede vencer el pecado y, como dice la Congregación para el Culto Divino y la Disciplina de los Sacramentos, “una invitación perenne al mundo cristiano para enfrentar, con confianza en divina benevolencia, las dificultades y pruebas que la humanidad [sic] experimentará en los años venideros ".
