Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para felicitar a la Clase de Confirmación 2017. Veintisiete jóvenes han completado su iniciación en la fe y han sido confirmados. Quiero expresar mi agradecimiento, también, hacia sus catequistas: Roseanne Mueller, Hector Dorado, Marilyn Ro-driguez, Cesar De la Cerda, y Lupita Salgado, quienes ded-icaron su tiempo y esfuerzo a compartir su fe con sus estu-diantes. También quiero compartir este artículo que escribí el año pasado en preparación al Dia de los Muertos: “Halloween es una celebración muy interesante para el psyche y la identidad cultural americana. Con todos sus elementos y diferentes tonos de celebración, muchos quizá se sientan amenazados y quizá ofendidos, especial-mente si uno es un extranjero. Muchos cristianos fundamen-talistas llegaran al grado de condenar esta celebración co-mo algo demoníaco argumentando que cae en lo grotesco y sanguíneo. Aunque es verdad que tiene un tono obscuro y de miedo, recordemos algunas cosas fundamentales: Hal-loween significa “Víspera de todos los Santos” (Eve of all hallows o All hallows eve) porque se celebra la noche anteri-or a uno de los días más santos del año litúrgico-Día de to-dos los santos. Las vigilias la noche anterior a una cele-bración importante son costumbre en la fe católica. Hallow-een cae en 31 de octubre porque es la víspera antes del “Día de todos los Santos” (Nov, 1). Así que, técnicamente, Halloween es una celebración católica. ¿Y qué decir del “Día de los Muertos”? Esta es una celebración de varios países de habla hispana, y se celebra el día de “Todos los Fieles Difuntos” (Nov. 2), en memoria de amigos y familiares que han fallecido. Quizá seamos un poco familiares con diferentes costumbres dependiendo del país o estado de origen. Del mismo modo, muchos cris-tianos fundamentalistas encontrarán en sus orígenes y ele-mentos suficientes razones para decir que es una tradición pagana que adora dioses extraños del pasado, o peor aún, que es una tradición que adora al diablo. Mi propósito en este boletín no es probar que una tradición es absolutamente católica o no. Saber los orígenes de una tradición no prueba que sea mala o no. Me gustaría que nos concentremos en lo siguiente: No hay nada de cari-dad en demonizar otra cultura. Está muy lejos de los que significa ser cristiano el decir que porque un altar tiene ele-mentos tradicionales que pertenecen a una cultura en partic-ular es demoníaco, o decir que porque los niños van de puerta en puerta pidiendo dulces están adorando al diablo.

Lo que es importante recordar es que somos muy diferentes de cultura a cultura y que todos hacemos cosas que se ven extrañas o amenazantes. Decir que uno o el otro es demoníaco no destruye el mal; más bien, establece una dinámica demoníaca en la que vemos al otro como inferior delante de Dios. Todos necesitamos ser evangelizados. Es cierto, quizá algunas de las cosas que hacemos son muy explicitas, pero ¿acaso no es así con todo lo demás? Nues-tras tradiciones necesitan ser evangelizadas, nuestros ho-gares necesitan ser evangelizados, nuestras palabras nece-sitan ser evangelizadas, el modo en que nos tratamos nece-sita ser evangelizado. Tratémonos con caridad.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate our Confir-mation Class 2017. Twenty seven young men and women have completed their initiation in the faith, and have been confirmed. I also want to express my gratitude to their cat-echists: Roseanne Mueller, Hector Dorado, Marilyn Rodri-guez, Cesar De la Cerda, and Lupita Salgado, who dedi-cated their time and efforts to share their faith with their students. I also want to share this article I wrote last year in prepara-tion to the celebration of “All Souls”: Halloween is a very interesting celebration for the Ameri-can psyche and cultural identity. With all its elements and its different tones of celebration, many might feel threat-ened and even upset, especially if one is a foreigner. Many fundamental Christians will go to the extent of condemning it as a demonic celebration arguing that it falls into the gro-tesque and bloody. While it is true that it has an appeal for the obscure and scary, let’s remember some of the funda-mentals: Halloween means the “eve of all hallows” or “all hallows eve” because it’s the evening before one of the holiest days of the liturgical year - All Saints Day. Evening vigils on the day before a feast or solemnity are customary in the Catholic Faith. Halloween falls on October 31 be-cause it is the vigil before All Saints Day (Nov. 1). So tech-nically, Halloween is a Catholic celebration at core. What about “Dia de Muertos” (day of the dead)? This is a celebration of a number of Spanish speaking countries, and it’s celebrated on the day of all souls (Nov. 2); our fam-ily and friends who have passed. Some of us might be fa-miliar with different costumes depending on the country or state of origin. In the same way, many fundamental Chris-tians will find in its origins and elements enough reasons to argue that this is a pagan tradition that worships deities from old cultures, or even worse, a tradition that worships the devil. My point in this bulletin is not to prove whether each tradi-tion is absolutely Catholic or not. Knowing the origins of either tradition does not prove that they are evil or not. I would like us to keep in mind the following: There is no charity in demonizing another culture. To say that because there is an altar with traditional elements that belong to a particular culture or to say that children worship the devil because they go door to door asking for candy is so out of touch with what Christianity is. What is important is to remember that we are very different from culture to culture, and we all do things that seem weird and threatening. To say that one or the other is evil does not in fact destroy evil; rather, it establishes an evil dynamic in which we see each other as less valuable in front of God. We all need to be evangelized. Yes, maybe some things are just too explicit, but isn’t it the same with everything else? Our traditions need to be evangelized, our homes need to be evangelized, our words need to be evangelized, the way we treat each other needs to be evangelized. Let’s treat each other with charity.

BALANCE

Today’s scriptures emphasize the fundamental link between love of God and love of our neighbors, especially those who are most in need. Love of God should compel us to love the people whom God cherishes. Conversely, work for justice and charity for those in need should be rooted in our love of God. That connection and balance, however, isn’t always easy to maintain in our lives. Even in reli-gious orders we find that some Christians are more oriented toward contemplation and prayer, while others are more active in reaching out to those who are oppressed. Today Jesus reminds us of the ne-cessity for both in the life of faith.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This week we have in All Souls’ Day a commemoration that is linked to the Halloween customs. The big-spending sugar shock holiday is a long way removed from Thursday’s grateful remembrance of the souls who are hidden from our sight, but alive to Christ. Old pagan superstitions might find us holding our breath when going by the graveyard, whereas others might actually go to the cemetery to tend the family graves, to share good food, and remember dear ones. Nowhere does a culture embrace this day as fully as in Mexico. The “Day of the Dead” is a national holiday that unfolds over three full days. For three thousand years, the indigenous people of Mexico have been mocking death in an annual festival, and the invading Spaniards were shocked at the spec-tacle. To the Aztecs, life was a dream, and death was the entry into full life. Skulls were thus a symbol of joy and release from life’s sorrows. The missionaries found all this a bit creepy, but they moved the three-day feast from August to synchronize it with the Christian calen-dar. So today, graves are decorated, altars are built in the home to honor the family dead, children feast on candy skulls, and people dress up in elaborate skeleton outfits. The devout spend hours in the cemetery, and there is a lively sense of the communion of saints, the living and the dead.

St. Domitilla Seniors has their monthly meeting the last Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in the South Hall. Join us this Tuesday with other parish-ioners and friends and have a fun afternoon. You do not have to be a registered parishioner to join in. This is the last week to register membership which entitles you to discounted fees for some activities. Nov. 21-Horseshoe Casino, Hammond- Cost per person $11.00 includes Buffet Lunch at 3:00 PM & DeLuxe Motor Coach transportation. Departure from South Park- ing lot at 10:30 AM; Board bus for return trip at 4:30 PM. Reservation forms must be returned to the parish office and have casino card # included on form.
