Quairading District High School

11th December 2018 Issue 16, Term 4

NEWSLETTER 100 years strong: 1913 - 2013

2019 Term 1: 4th February—12th April

Term 2: 29th April—5th July Term 3: 22nd July—27th September

Term 4: 14th October—19th December

Dear Parents, Staff and the Quairading Community, As the term draws to a close it has been as busy as ever! Swimming lessons concluded recently – congratulations to those students who completed their lessons successfully and thankyou to the swimming staff, Alex and the Quairading Shire, school staff and bus drivers and contractors who helped make it all happen effectively! Swimming lessons go a long way to ensuring your child’s safety over the summer. Our Senior Citizens were treated to an entertaining performance by our Singing Buddies recently at the Senior Citizens luncheon and concert. Our year 9/10’s performed some community service and assisted set up, serve and clear up after the lunch. I understand their service learning was highly appreciated and they conducted themselves with maturity, enthusiasm and grace. Another community group with which we have a strong relationship is the Volunteer Fire Brigade, who visited the school recently. Thankyou to the team members for their support and for talking to our students about fire prevention and fighting. Thankyou to our St John’s Ambulance crew who have donated ‘snake bite’ bandages to the school after a recent visit. These are a marvellous invention and, although we hope never to use them, they will be a welcome addition to our first aid room. Current community service providers and businesses have recently supported our year 9/10 group by hosting students for work experience. We offer our most sincere appreciation to the following businesses: Quairading BP, Quairading CRC, Quairading Smash Repairs, Quairading Farmers Co-op, Quairading Book Post, Golden Grain Café, Ag Implements, Little Rainmakers and QDHS ECE centre. Recently we hosted a thankyou morning tea where staff were able to pay a little back to our volunteers and relief staff by providing a delicious spread of goodies. We so very much appreciate the work of our volunteers, bus contractors, community service providers, relief staff and all of the people who help our school to run effectively every day. Thankyou to them. Teachers and staff have been far busier than usual during the reporting process, however more recently they have been meeting after school to further develop and plan for 2019 with the Strategic Plan (which will now be known as a School Plan) Literacy & Numeracy plans and other learning area and school plans. Our P&C have voted to purchase a bus from Colin Hayes – a massive undertaking that promises to be a positive move for our students, providing an easier and cost effective process for excursions and experiences for the children. We look forward to working with our P&C to ensure the strategy is a positive and productive one. Aahlia Faltyn & Jaylene George attended a Wheatbelt Youth Council meeting in Merredin last week with Snr

Sergeant Hancock and Sergeant Andrews. They met with other Council representatives from around the

Wheatbelt to discuss possible areas of focus and influence. This year the girls have been proactive in the ‘purple

bench’ project and have a bench to be presented at the awards day, to the community, in recognition of victims of

domestic violence. In 2019, the most likely initial focus for the WYC will be bike helmets.

If you have any suggestions for them, let them know. Whilst in Merredin, after their meeting, they had an opportunity to try out some police equipment, with great results! You can see their handiwork in the photos or on the Quairading Police Twitter account. So at this time of the year we have farewells to make. Congratulations to one of our long time bus drivers who is retiring! Mrs Lizzie Taylor has been driving a bus for six years and is leaving us to enjoy the retirement lifestyle. We wish her all the very best (and some lovely sleep-ins!) It is confirmed we will be losing seven of our current teachers – Miss Sam White will be teaching in the ECE at Leda PS next year, Mr Daniel Kujawski will be teaching at Campbell PS, Miss Ashlee Kujawski will be teaching in Tammin PS, Miss Laura Eastwood is teaching English at Harrisdale SHS, Mr Davy John (and Hannah) are moving to Cairns to take up a position at Koranda SHS, Mr Tom Curtin and Amalia are moving to Margaret River and after ten years of D&T Mr Terry Chivers will be resuming his building business full time. Regardless of the time spent in our school, we wish these people all the very best in their new positions in 2019 and beyond. We acknowledge the learning that they have undertaken whilst here and the value they have added to our children and to the school community. I know their new schools will enjoy the same. Our confirmed teachers for 2019 are Miss Taryn White in the KP, Mrs Leonie Matthews in year 1-2, Mrs Jamie Garrett in secondary English & Science and Mrs Jennifer Tonkin in year 5-6. Welcome to those people. Mrs Marian Mills is taking Long Service Leave for the year. Mrs Kelsie Squiers will be teaching the year 3-4 class, Mrs Jane Johnston will be teaching in our primary, Mrs Fraser will be taking secondary HaSS and whole school art and Mrs Kylie Squiers will be teaching music and secondary maths. We look forward to working with our new staff and it promises to be an exciting year. There will be students and families we farewell this week. We wish those students all the very best in their new schools. Keep your school photos handy and please remember your classmates and our great school. Final academic activities for the term have been underway and mostly culminated, with this week full of more celebratory activities. Monday we enjoyed the Kindy/Pre-primary graduation ceremony with a special visitor in a red suit, which was very exciting! Tuesday we celebrated our graduates in Year 10, presented our Year 6 graduates and rewarded our high achievers across the school at the Awards and Graduation Ceremony in the hall. Today we have class parties, our year six graduation celebration and shirt signing for those students who are leaving (with parent permission). Our year 2-3’s will be at Scitech for the day and our secondary ‘Good Standing’ students will enjoy a workshop presented by our local police Senior Sergeant Hancock and Sergeant Andrews. Sounds like fun to me! On Thursday our student council are hosting a whole school slip ‘n’ slide as their final activity for the year. It promises to be a very busy week for students and staff.

As the school year draws to a close, I would applaud and recognise those students, staff and parents in our

school who continue to challenge, innovate, inspire and who are grateful. Merry Christmas, happy New Year, be

safe, be gracious – remember to be thankful for time with family (and any gifts you might receive!)

School begins Monday 4th February 2019.

Project Manager Report Although our school improvement plan has not been formally endorsed, Mrs Wray met with Miss Ramm recently to look over the plan and there were a number of minor changes suggested. Having said that, Miss Ramm has no significant issues and is confident the plan will be approved. She is happy with the amount of detail and feels it provides a clear framework with which to move forward. Staff have been particularly active with school planning, operational planning, analysing data and developing targets for 2019. Staff recently met to analyse and plan for actions to address the trends in the NSOS feedback. In between these responsibilities, teachers have also been finalising academic tasks and assessments for the year and writing summative reports. As Project Coordinator, my role is to oversee the work of the committees and staff and monitor the progress made towards achieving the objectives in the School Improvement Plan. In order to keep plans ticking along I have utilised a table that highlights each task to be completed, and ticking them off. Through this, I have been able to share my strong sense of accomplishment with the team. According to the school improvement plan there was a total of 127 tasks to be actioned over the year and some obviously ongoing. During term three, we actioned 35 of the tasks, 9 of which are ongoing. And despite some holdbacks during term four, we have actioned 25 tasks, 8 of which are ongoing. This takes us to a total of 60 actioned outcomes to date, and a number of tasks are set to be actioned at the beginning of 2019. This is progress of which the staff and community of QDHS can be can be proud. The team and I look forward to approval of our plan....and a proactive start to 2019. Merry Christmas and happy New Year. Rebecca Wilson Project Manager, QDHS School Improvement Plan

Summer holidays with kids The summer holidays are an exciting time. It’s a time where you and your kids get to unwind after a busy year, and spend quality time together. Whether you’re hanging out in one spot or heading off to explore, holidays with kids are about planning for short attention spans and long travel times. Here are some top tips:

Plan more breaks and fewer activities than you would if you were travelling on your own or with adults.

Make sure you have plenty of stops for meals and drinks to keep everyone’s energy levels up.

Look for activities and local attractions to keep children entertained – for example, swimming, games,

playgrounds, carnivals, fun parks and movies. Plan downtime for yourself too. If your children are entertained with organised activities, playing with other children, or being looked after by babysitters, you’ll get a break for yourself.

Summer is a time to be vigilant about water and sun safety, especially when holidaying away from home, and in an unfamiliar place.

Quick Tip

Getting your children to help you plan your holiday can get them interested and excited. Their input can help you have a holiday that’s fun for everyone. Some kids do get nervous about the break from routine. Talking about holiday plans is also a good way to help them settle into the idea and reduce anxiety.
