Seventh in the series - session seven is about summarising and concluding a session and introduces learners to the NLP Change Model and the Mercedes Model as a way of structuring our therapeutic interventions.

To practise our skills, learn about summarising, and introduce the Change Model and Mercedes Model

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing enables the listener to clarify meaning by repeating back to the speaker the content of what they have said.

Reflecting Feelings

Reflecting feelings involves identifying and drawing the speaker’s attention to the feelings behind his or her words

Reflecting the emotional content of what is being said.

Summary throughout the session to clarify meaning and highlight the key points of what’s been said.

Concluding

Summary at the end of the checks understanding, checks agreement and brings the session to a close

Skills Practise 30 minutes

1. Work in groups of three

2. Take turns being the listener, the client and the observer.

3. Take 5 minutes each

4. Client - talk about a small problem that’s current in your life

5. Listener – practise all your listening skills, including contracting, paraphrasing and reflecting feelings. End with a summary.

6. Observer - keep the time and complete the feedback sheet so you can give structured feedback on the listener’s use of listening skills
