Loyola Marymount University FROM: KPFF Consulting Engineers SUBJECT: LMU Water System Analysis, Fire Flow Calculations

KPFF Job # 107305.02 The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of flowing Loyola Marymount University’s water system to the Los Angeles City Municipal and Fire Code standards by adding a fire flow demand to the campus. The goal is to ensure that the system has adequate pressure as determined by the Fire Code. Methodology: 1. The water system network analysis was modeled in Bentley WaterCAD V8 XM Edition by

Haestad Methods Solution Center. The model is composed of a network of pipes and junctions. The pipes are defined by their lengths, diameters and material. The junctions are defined by elevations and flow demands.

2. The water system model uses three sources from the existing City of Los Angeles

Department of Water and Power mains. These include a 12” main in McConnell Avenue, an 8” main in 80th Street and a 12” main in LMU Drive. Refer to the attached Service Advisory Requests (SARs) from the City of Los Angeles Department of Water Power (Attachment A).

Design Criteria & Assumptions: 1. LMU’s water system combines fire and domestic on the main campus loop. 2. The analysis assumes that the Los Angeles Municipal Code, Section 57.09.06, for high

density residential and neighborhood commercial areas applies to the LMU campus. 3. Four scenarios are modeled to determine pressures at the point of demand (fire hydrants).

A. 4000 gpm fire demand from 4 hydrants (1000 gpm per hydrant), as stipulated in the Los Angeles Fire Code, Section 57.09.06.

Page 3: APPENDIX IV.J.2 LMU Water System Analysis, Fire … Water System Analysis, Fire Flow ... LMU Water System Analysis, Fire Flow Calculations ... The water system network analysis was

B. The fire demand from 4 hydrants to achieve a residual pressure in the system of 20 psi at the loading points, which is the minimum residual water pressure required under Los Angeles Fire Code, 57.09.02, Section A.2.

C. 4000 gpm fire demand from 4 hydrants (1000 gpm per hydrant), as stipulated in the

Los Angeles Fire Code Section 57.09.06, [under average domestic campus demand]. D. The fire demand from 4 hydrants to achieve a residual pressure in the system of 20

psi at the loading points, which is the minimum residual water pressure required under Los Angeles Fire Code, 57.09.02, Section A.2, [under average domestic campus demand].

4. The four hydrants used are near the center of campus allowing for a conservative analysis of

the water system. Such hydrant choice for the study ensures that demand is taken furthest from the water sources to the campus (from Los Angeles DWP public mains within public streets). The fire hydrants used are at Junctions (J) 73, 76, 95, and 100. See Attachment B for an overall map of the campus water system infrastructure used in the model. See Attachment C for the locations of the four hydrants and junctions used in the analysis (J-73, J-76, J-95, and J-100).

Results: Scenario A: Under zero applied domestic demand for the entire campus and a fire hydrant loading of 1,000 gpm for hydrants at J-73, J-76, J-95, and J-100 for a total of 4,000 gpm for high density residential and neighborhood commercial areas, per the Los Angeles City Fire Code, pressures at the hydrants are adequate for service to the campus during a fire. Pressures at the points of loading were recorded at 46.8, 47.4, 49.7, and 46.8 psi respectively for each hydrant. See Attachment D for summary data from the WaterCAD output. These pressures are well above the 20 psi required by the City of Los Angeles Fire Code. It can be determined that the existing campus system is more than adequate to meet required fire flows in this situation, assuming that high density residential and neighborhood commercial standards under the Fire Code are applicable to the LMU campus. Scenario B: Under zero domestic demand for the entire campus, the model was run to determine the available demand at the four hydrants, J-73, J-76, J-95, and J-100, to get the campus system to a residual pressure of 20 psi (minimum required pressure per LA Fire Code Section 57.09.02, A.2). It was determined through the model that a flow of 1,745 gpm from each hydrant for a total of 6,980 gpm from the 4 hydrants flowing simultaneously brings the residual pressure in the system to 20 psi at the point of loading, specifically at J-73. All other hydrants flowing at 1,745 gpm were above the 20 psi mark. See Attachment E for summary data from the WaterCAD output. It can be determined that this flow from the 4 specified hydrants simultaneously is the maximum allowable from the system in the event of a fire. Scenario C: Under average applied domestic demand for the entire campus and a fire hydrant loading of 1,000 gpm for hydrants at J-73, J-76, J-95, and J-100 for a total of 4,000 gpm for high density residential and neighborhood commercial areas, per the Los Angeles City Fire Code, pressures at the hydrants are adequate for service to the campus during a fire. Pressures at the points of loading were recorded at 36.6, 37.1, 39.6, and 36.6 psi respectively for each hydrant. See Attachment F for summary data from the WaterCAD output. These pressures are well above

Page 4: APPENDIX IV.J.2 LMU Water System Analysis, Fire … Water System Analysis, Fire Flow ... LMU Water System Analysis, Fire Flow Calculations ... The water system network analysis was

the 20 psi required by the City of Los Angeles Fire Code. It can be determined that the existing campus system is more than adequate to meet required fire flows in this situation, assuming that high density residential and neighborhood commercial standards under the Fire Code are applicable to the LMU campus. Scenario D: Under average domestic demand for the entire campus, the model was run to determine the available demand at the four hydrants, J-73, J-76, J-95, and J-100, to get the campus system to a residual pressure of 20 psi (minimum required pressure per LA Fire Code Section 57.09.02, A.2). It was determined through the model that a flow of 1,380 gpm from each hydrant for a total of 5,520 gpm from the 4 hydrants flowing simultaneously brings the residual pressure in the system to 20 psi. See Attachment G for summary data from the WaterCAD output. It can be determined that this flow from the 4 specified hydrants simultaneously is the maximum allowable from the system in the event of a fire. Attachments: A. DWP Service Advisory Requests B.
