Is your lawn looking thin and brown? You can get back to the thick, lush, green lawn you've always wanted and all you need to do is reseed. If you put down a layer of seed over your lawn in the spring or autumn, all the thin areas start growing grass, and your lawn starts to look terrific again.

Why overseed?Over time, grass does get old and

needs to be replaced. Worn-out lawns invite weeds. Overseeding is a fast, inexpensive way to help bring your lawn back to its lush, green, healthy self without tearing everything out and starting over. It's also a great way to introduce a new type of grass.

When to overseed?If you overseed your lawn in

autumn you will find the soil is still warm but the air is cooler. There are fewer weeds for new grass to compete against. Since your trees are starting to shed their leaves, there's plenty of sunlight. Also, diseases that attack seedlings are less active. If you can't seed in autumn, your next best time is the spring.

Mow lowFor overseeding, you'll want to cut

your grass lower than normal, and remove the clippings. This will allow the grass seed to get down to the ground more easily.

Help the seed settle in by amending the soilIt's a good idea to rake in a thin

layer of enriched soil over your lawn. Don't put so much down that you kill your existing grass; less than a six millimetres is plenty.

Choose the right seedWhat seed you choose depends

on where you live and what problem is making your lawn thin in the first place. For instance, if your lawn is shady, choose a shade-tolerant seed. If kids play in your yard, choose a variety that can stand up to foot traffic. The people at your neighbourhood garden centre can help you choose the grass seed mix that's right for your lawn.

Spread the seedYou've cut the lawn short, removed

the clippings and amended the soil. Now comes the easy part. Just fill up your spreader with grass seed, adjust the setting according to the label directions, and apply.

Feed and waterTo give your new grass seedlings

the essential nutrients they need for fast growth, apply starter food for new lawns after you've spread your grass seed. Gently rake the seed and lawn food into the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist, this means lightly watering once or twice a day, until the seedlings have reached the height of the rest of your lawn.

Stunning salvia

Salvia, a plant for every situation

Every month I write about a particular plant or two. I showcase what gardens the plant suits and mention the particular features of that variety.

This month I’ve decided to write about salvia. But, unlike most of the other plants I feature, salvia can’t be narrowed down to just one set of traits or characteristics.

The salvia genus includes over 900 species! It has annuals, biennials, perennials and shrubs. There are dwarf varieties, bedding ones, some that grow up to three metres tall and wide and, did you know that sage is, in fact, a form of salvia?

Many different varieties of salvia, including both annuals and perennials, are available for sale within New Zealand.

You can buy salvia red dwarf and or mixed salvia bundles, which both grow to a height of 25cm.

Victory white and patens electric blue both grow to approx 50 and 60cm respectively and there is a blue bedder which grows to a substantial 90cm in height.

And the range of colours salvia can be found in include blue and purple, white, and different shades of red.

Most of our salvia plants flower from summer through to autumn and are good for bedding and the back of borders.

Because of the erect manner which salvia patens electric blue’s branches grow, it can look incredibly striking grown in a pot over summer.

In fact, that’s probably the one consistent with salvia – it tends to look very striking wherever you grow it.

You can grab your salvia seedlings online or, the next time you’re down town, at your local supermarket,

garden centre or trade centre.

Given the several varieties of salvia on offer, seedling bundles should have labels that have clear planting instructions on the back. But generally salvias like rich, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade.

If you’re growing a dwarf variety, simply plant 15cm apart, and if it’s the taller salvia, try planting 30 to 50cm apart.

Then, in about eight to 10 weeks you can expect to see some striking salvia colour start to show in your garden.
