COMMUNITY EMERGENCY CORPS & TOYS FOR TOTS
BALLSTON SPA – During this upcoming holiday season, Com-munity Emergency Corps of Ballston Spa will again be an offi -cial drop off point for donations for the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the United States Marine Corps. For 2014, we will be partnering with the Saratoga County Sheriff ’s Offi ce to broaden the scope of our support for the national Toys for Tots campaign. This campaign has reached out and as-sisted needy and deserving children all around the capital region for over 45 years. Without this wonderful program, children in our communities would not have the opportunity to celebrate the holidays the way they deserve. In last year’s campaign the program reached their goal of collecting over 120,000 toys and distributing them to deserving children, making their holiday’s memorable ones. Our program has grown incredibly in 5 years, through your donations, from about 40 toys our fi rst year to well over 200 toys last season. We are hoping that by taking on the Sheriff ’s Department as a partner, we will see a signifi cant increase in donations with the additional exposure throughout Saratoga County. New, unwrapped toys, games, books, puzzles, sport balls, dolls, snow toys, and anything for kids from infant to teens are all appreciated. Stuff ed toys are the only exception. We have already started to receive donations and will be accepting toys at our station at 78 Thompson St., Ballston Spa, NY until December 15th. You can drop them off anytime, days or eve-nings. If we are not at the building due to answering emer-gency calls, we hope you will return at another time with your contribution. As a reminder, toys collected in this area are redistributed right back into this area to those in need. For further information or if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Otten, Executive Director of CEC, at 885-1478.

Dachshund Mix Puppies
Amelia
Tubbs & Ash
This little cutie is a little lab mix who was brought in with 7 siblings. She was the last of her litter to find a forever home. She is up to
date on shots, wormed and vet checked.
Another sad story and way too long to get into. We can only say that these guys were thrown out
of their home into the cold. I can't imagine the fear that they felt after being inside on their favorite chair to one day face the harsh reality that they
could not be indoor kitties anymore. ASAS could not leave them outside. We are filling up very fast and need adoption of our older kitties or else we will not be able to take in and give safe haven to
more babies left out in the cold. Please come and adopt. These guys are up to date on vaccines and
spayed and neutered.
The mother was surrendered when the puppies were three days old. She is a registered red long hair dachshund. She weighs about 9 lbs. (The father was a wire haired Terrier.) She had eight puppies. These are the males. The females
and Mom have already been adopted with Mom going to the foster who took care of them. They were born July 23 and have had 3 vaccinations and
wormed three times.

is an 8 year old male Beagle who is good with older children and other dogs and is housebroken. He will make a great addition to anyone who adopts him! As Brunson is 8 years old, he qualifies

is a spayed female Brittany Spaniel/Cattle Dog/Pit Mix who is approximately 3 years old. She is up to date on her shots and
microchipped. Leah’s foster mom writes: Since Leah has been living us, it has become very clear that she is potty trained, walks well on a leash, and is knowledgeable of the commands sit, lay down, stay, and shake (possibly more). She is friendly with all humans, and she likes our 2 kittens; however she is more timid with dogs (work in
progress). Leah is crate trained but would prefer nothing more than to snuggle right up next to (or on top of you) in bed at night. She is FULL of puppy kisses and hugs. Leah would thrive in a family that enjoys taking her for long walks or even runs, and a family that has a place where Leah can run around, play fetch, and sunbathe. Leah would be a fantastic addition to any family looking to receive some serious puppy loving. For more information, please call us at

Calling all couch potatoes!!! This chunky monkey is ready to plop down beside you. Bailey loves to be scratched and prefers to be right near you all the time, normally on the sofa, where he likes
to sleep half-on/half-off your lap (at 17 pounds he’s almost too big to fit all the way). When really happy he will roll around on the floor and “rough-house”— occasionally giving little love-nips if you get him too excited. When scared Bailey will vocalize with a soft
growl, he has never been aggressive, that’s just him letting everyone know that it’s “personal space” time. His favorite food is dry kibble although he does like to lick up the gravy in canned food. Overall Bailey is a gentle and loving cat. He would probably do best in a quiet house without children however he is good with other cats.
All HOPE cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on their shots, and have tested negative for Feline Leukemia and FIV.

By the time you’re reading this Christmas will be only about 6 weeks away. I’ll have to admit that this makes me feel a little queasy since I haven’t put a bit of thought into my gift list let alone actually purchasing any gifts. I know a lot of folks (the smart one I guess) have already finished their shopping. I can’t imagine being quite that organized but I admit to being a little envious. I also know that quite a few neighbors of mine took advantage of earlier dry weather to get their outside Christmas lights put up. Considering how fickle the weather seems to be this year, that was indeed a smart move. There’s nothing worse than freezing your fingers trying to put up holiday lights while getting dripped on by ice water. I’ll admit that I have yet to tackle that project so I’m really hoping for just one more warm weekend. I’m not too optimistic though. I have a bad feeling about this winter. I’ll go on record as saying that we’re in for a one heck of a winter with snow early and a snow event of at least 12” before Christmas. In a sick kind of way I’m kind of looking forward to it. There are those among us who can remember a time when the poinsettia wasn’t one of our holiday plants. They’ve only recently arrived on the holiday scene. The poinsettia was cultivated by the Aztecs in Mexico B.C. (Before Cortez). Called Cuetlaxochitl, it was a symbol of purity and was highly prized by the Aztecs. Later, the flowers were used by Franciscan priests in nativity processions in colonial Mexico. Mexican folklore holds that the poinsettia or ‘flower of the Holy Night’ appeared during a miracle that occurred on Christmas. A boy who came to the church on Christmas was so poor that he had nothing to offer the Christ child. In shame, he fell to his knees and prayerfully asked God to forgive him. When he stood up, the first ‘flower of the Holy Night’ appeared from the soil at his feet so he would have a gift to offer. Eventually, around 1830, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, saw the plants, and sent some home to South Carolina. Poinsett, like so many early Americans, was a respected amateur botanist. He propagated his plants and shared them with friends and botanical gardens throughout the U.S. From that time, English speaking countries have known the poinsettia. Around 1906, a German immigrant, Albert Ecke of California thought that the easy-to-grow poinsettia might make an interesting cut flower. It’s habit of producing bright red leaves, or bracts, just before the solstice seemed to make it a natural for the holiday season. His idea caught on, especially in California and the southwest. Over the years, Albert and his son Paul began breeding poinsettias for larger bracts and bracts of different colors. They eventually developed varieties that performed well in small pots. The modern poinsettia plant was born. Years of hard work and experimentation blossomed into a huge business with the Ecke family at the center. Most of the poinsettias grown today are from cuttings produced at the huge Ecke Poinsettia Ranch in California. They continue to develop new varieties. We now have white, pink speckled, bi-colored and new yellow poinsettias, all thanks to the efforts of the Ecke family. Another tropical that has found its way into the American Holiday scene is the Christmas Cactus. Like the poinsettia, the Christmas Cactus is a short day bloomer. This means that decreasing day length is the trigger for the flowering period to begin. The ancestors of our modern Christmas cacti are native to the forests and jungles of South America. Although a true cactus, the Christmas cactus seems to break all the rules of cactus culture. In it’s native environment, the Christmas cactus (Zygocactus truncatus, or Schlumbergera bridgesil), and it’s relatives, the Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncatus, or Zygocactus truncatus) and Easter cactus (Rhipsalidopsis gaertnerl), are all epiphytes. In other words, these are cacti that grow in trees! These forest or jungle cacti grow their roots into the bark of their host tree. Their only access to moisture and nutrients is from rain and droppings that fall from above. When we think of cacti, we automatically think of the desert and bright sunlight. These forest cacti always grow under a canopy of trees and are never exposed to the full sun of the desert. The environment that these cacti have adapted to is that of the warm, humid jungle with sunlight filtered through the canopy of the forest. The adaptation of the Christmas cactus and its tropical cousins make it an excellent candidate for use as a houseplant. Its habit of flowering just before the winter solstice makes it a natural for display during the holiday season.

WINTER PREP CHECKLIST
Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles and even our psyches for the arrival of winter. To get your car cold-weather ready, check and repair these items now.
• Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinfl ated, you lose fuel effi ciency, so monitor and maintain tire pressure throughout the winter.
• Those who live in particu-larly cold climates should switch from all-season to winter tires. Much as you wear winter boots to pro-vide more traction and pro-tection than sneakers, so should you equip your vehi-cle with tires that will stand up to winter terrain.
• Check on the status of your battery and its starting power. Cold weather can put more strain on a car bat-tery. A battery that is already weak may not turn over when you need it most.
• Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade to a windshield fl uid that is rated for subzero temperatures. Each of these items will improve visibility when winter precipitation is making its presence felt.
• Schedule an oil change at the beginning of winter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weather starts and, if cou-pled with low coolant levels, can make it diffi cult for the engine to turn over.
• Keep jumper cables, a bat-tery booster pack and warn-ing cones in your vehicle. These can come to the res-cue if your battery dies and you’re stranded on the side of the road.
• While you’re stocking the trunk or cargo bed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter,
a fl ashlight, an ice scraper, water, and a blanket. These are good emergency items to have in the event your car breaks down in the winter. You can dig your tires out of a snow drift with the shovel and apply litter to increase traction. The blanket will come in handy if you have to sit in a cold car for a while awaiting roadside service.
• Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy, snowy conditions completely change the defensive tac-tics needed to navigate the roads. A prepared driver is one who is more likely to avoid accidents and make it home safely.
