What an amazing week we have had commencing with our Education Week Open Day. What a wonderful day this was, with our choirs and dance groups performing for our parents and grandparents. It is always a pleasure to watch such amazing Berkeley Vale talent. To every student who performed congratulations and many thanks for your wonderful commitment to practice sessions and performances. Another highlight was the science activities that each class participated in. Having moved around all of the classrooms it was difficult to tell who was having the most fun… the students, teachers or parents. Many thanks to our fantastic staff for the time and effort they put into this day. Many thanks also to Laura Morris and her canteen parent helpers who made and catered for over 250 lunches. On our Open Day we also had the library Book Fair taking place and as usual this was a well visited and supported activity. To every parent and child who has supported our Book Fair this term…thank you, as every book purchased benefits the school library with rewards from Carnival Book Fairs. While we are on the topic of books the local Chittaway Bay Lions Club which supports our school throughout the year is asking for donations of books, DVD’s or CD’s for their book sale in October. If you have any of these items that you would like to donate, please send them to the school office over the next three weeks. This week our school was also notified that we are part of the State initiative ‘Bump It Up’. This means that we will be identifying all students who are doing well and who, the data (NAPLAN) suggests, have the greatest capacity to achieve in the top two NAPLAN bands. This means that we will be identifying students who are in the middle two bands of NAPLAN, and implementing specific, targeted locally-developed initiatives to improve their performance in reading and numeracy. The ‘Bump It Up’ strategy runs over 4 years. Those schools that have been selected to participate have been specifically chosen as they have the greatest potential to improve student performance in reading and numeracy NAPLAN. More information on this wonderful initiative will be discussed at the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 16 August. On Thursday I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Community Academic Award Ceremony. This is where each school within our area acknowledges our top five students in year 5 and year 6. It was exciting to recognise and congratulate the following students for their outstanding achievement and academic success: William Taylor, Emilie Flack, Daniella Nagi, Jerakai Sutherland, Chloe Tandy, Logan Weekes, Sawyer Etchells, Angad Paul, Shanice Duarte, Casey Smith MERIT AWARDS Congratulations to the following students: 2/3A Brooklyn Oakes, Talieghia Kirby 3/4P Leroy Abel, Isabella Pex 3/4S Stevie-Lee Whitaker, Hope Robinson, Bryce Caswell Paige Jackson 3A Logan Makings 3H Lacey Main, Connor McElhinney, Trae Kingi-O’Reilly Aubin May 4J Teratai McLeish, Cooper Pannell 4L Ava Shield, Lilee Rogers, Lachlan Cairns 4/5T Bella Caddis, Callum Meers 5B Ella McCray, Jessica Glynn, Montanna Lansdowne Caitlyn Williams 5M Therese Edwards, Zac McCallum, Riley Armstrong 5P Holley Hickel, Mason Rhook 5/6R Leon Gaffey, Shanice Duarte 6B Lara Chidgey, Daniel Allen 6E Mali Wyatt, Luke Jessep 6J Kyle Tattersall, Rohan Westman APPROPRIATE CONDUCT IN SCHOOL GROUNDS We would like to give a friendly reminder to our parents and community members of the importance in keeping conversations and interactions appropriate to school grounds, particularly in the presence of students. CENTRAL COAST DANCE FESTIVAL Last term 3 dance groups from our school wowed audiences at the Central Coast Dance Festival held at Laycock Street Theatre. These dance groups had spent 2 lunchtimes a week for 2 whole terms preparing for this event. The Junior dance group, made up of students from Years 2/3, performed a contemporary piece to the song Home. The Intermediate dance group, made up of students from Years 4/5, performed a jazz routine to Dancing Fool while the Senior group, girls from Year 6, performed their contemporary piece to Building Dreams. The girls looked spectacular on stage and were great ambassadors for our school. Thank you to the girls (and their teachers) who dedicated a lot of time to perfect their routines.

dropping off or picking up your children, and we encourage you to continue making those important connections. This is what makes our school community unique and welcoming. However, we also ask that these conversations are appropriate within the context of school and are not within earshot of students, or promoting an environment of intimidation or gossip. Staff and parents all have the common goal of providing every student at Berkeley Vale PS with a great education in a caring and supportive learning environment. We thank you for continuing to support this vision.

ABORIGINAL GARDEN PROJECT Our Aboriginal Garden Project has been coming along over the last few weeks. Many thanks to the parents who have assisted in pulling the garden together by donating their time and attending our recent working bee day. The students have been working on some wonderful art installations that will be placed in the garden also. We still have some work to do and would like to invite parents and community members into our school for an additional working bee on the afternoon of Thursday 11 August from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. If you are able to make it at any time during this period we would appreciate your help. You may wish to pop in before picking up your child, or alternatively, you may wish to stay after school and help for a little while. If you are available and would like to come in you are more than welcome to join us. We look forward to seeing you then. Thank you to all of our Garden Sponsors for their generous donations or discounts on products that have been used in the project. These companies will be featured throughout the next few newsletters and also on our electronic sign.

SPORTING UPDATES Boys and Girls Basketball Gala Day Our boys and girls basketball teams represented the school in a gala day at Terrigal stadium last Thursday. Both teams played strong games, bringing home wins. The boys’ team defeated Tuggerah in their first round 46-1, and then were defeated in their second round to Wamberal 29-45. Their final game was a nail biter against Bateau Bay bringing home their second win for the day 26-24 with every member of the team scoring a goal. The girls’ team went in strong against Bateau Bay taking their first win 21-6; they gave 100% effort in a loss to Terrigal at 4-65. They played hard in their final game which saw them lose a couple of star players to ankle injuries but were defeated by 1 point with The Entrance taking home the win at 20-21. A fantastic day was had by all and I was extremely proud of the sportsmanship and positive attitudes they displayed throughout the day. Thank you to all the parents who supported us on the day by providing transport or assisting the coach. Rugby League Finals Day On Thursday 30 June Berkeley Vale Public School competed in the All Schools Rugby League Knock Out finals day at Sohier Park, Ourimbah. Our teams had won their respective Gala Days and had to now play in the final to win a position in the Gala Day in Sydney next term. Our 12’s played Bateau Bay Public School in the 12’s. In a very one sided game our boys were beaten by an extremely well drilled Bateau Bay team. The Bateau Bay team have been undefeated on the coast for the past couple of years. Our 11’s had better luck winning a close game 20-18. Berkeley Vale scored in the last 30 seconds to tie the scores 18-18. We needed the goal conversion to win and our captain Riley Jones slotted the kick. A huge thank you to the parents who continue to support our school and especially Mick Jones (dad) who did the coaching in the U11’s game. A great effort by all the Berkeley Vale boys who competed fairly and never gave up. State Touch Football Carnival Congratulations to Elijah Adams-Kiriona and Will Steele for their amazing achievements at the State Touch Football Carnival. Representing Sydney North, the boys travelled to Tamworth and competed against all the other NSW regions. After 3 intense days of touch football their team successfully qualified for the

I am writing my last Morts Sports Shorts with mixed feelings. On my next birthday I will be at my retirement age and will finish here at BVPS on Friday (my favourite day) 19 August. I have been involved with the school since my arrival in 1990 (last century) and have enjoyed my time helping your children, hopefully helping them become role models for the next generation. My main interests have been coaching and managing sporting teams. Highlights will always be the Rugby League and AFL teams with boys and some girls teams. When we won the AFL NSW Comp in 1999, that was a real delight. Alan Elsworthy, one of our grandads, helped me coach the team, and we still talk about it. Lately the girls Touch team of 2014 winning the State Comp was again another highlight. Being manager of that team taught me a lot about trusting younger people. Charmain Nathan was our coach that year. I suppose I’m lucky because I’ve met many of you at some sort of sporting event. Big thank you’s to all the people who have helped our school. The community is a great place full of fantastic people. Finally a big thanks to the teachers who have helped me throughout my career. Special thanks to Gail Grills, Matt Porter, Anita Burge, Phil Allum, Mick McMahon and the Principals who have allowed me to do my thing. I am very proud to wear the Berkeley Vale shirt and feel I have always served the school to the best of my ability. I will miss the excursions and I will miss the noise and hustle and bustle of what is Berkeley Vale Public School. I hope to see you all at some time to share any experiences we may have had. Thanks for everything, time for me to move on and do some things differently.

PBL Congratulations to all the students who achieved silver level at the end of last term. Over 600 students achieved this level – well done! Certificates and prizes have been issued. The students had a choice of: VIP with extra play time, a tennis ball or an ice block. It is great to see students achieving gold and platinum levels so early on in the year. These certificates will be issued at fortnightly assemblies. Parents will receive an invitation to attend the assembly once their child has achieved the final Swannie level - platinum.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST If you have expertise in IT and are capable of developing a new student report for our school, please contact the office on: 4388 1796

final. The boys mustered all their strength and determination and went on to win 3-1. Fantastic result, boys. Well done!

Rugby League Under 11’s Our team played their Gala Day on Monday 1 August at Werrington against some very strong teams. We played against St Andrews Malabar for a 12-12 draw. Our next game was against Harbord Public School. We needed a win to make the semi finals. Our boys were all over Harbord in the first half but couldn’t get a score. We had players held up so it was very close. In the end we went down 18-0 against very big and very fast opposition. Our first game was a bye because Tamworth were unable to attend. A huge thanks to Mick Jones (Riley’s dad in 4/5T) who coached the boys. A large group of supporters cheered the boys on so we can all be very proud of all our boys. Next year the boys can do it all again so we look forward to going just as well again!

Boy’s Cricket Our successful Boys’ cricket team played their round 4 match last week against Kanwal. Last year when our team played Kanwal we were victorious by 1 run so the boys knew it was going to be a tough match. Kanwal won the toss and sent us in

to bat. After our stock standard steady start we were 0/36 after 10 overs. After the drinks break the boys ramped it up with Matt Smale scoring a quick fire 38 not out to see out our 20 overs for 104. Kanwal started well and were in front for most of the game but a few key wickets restricted them from getting on top. Riley Armstrong took an absolute blinder to dismiss their key batsman which prompted a middle order collapse. In the end Kanwal were bowled out for 83 in the 19th over. The boys are now on to the Central Coast final to be played in term 4. This is their second consecutive year playing in the final and they are excited about the possibility to move on to the state round of 16 knockout.

Girls and Boys Touch Football Gala Day On Thursday 21 July the boys and girls touch football teams travelled to Woongarrah to play in a gala day, as part of the PSSA Knockout Competition. Both teams enjoyed success in their first two games which meant that they were able to play a third game - the final for the gala day. Unfortunately, both teams were defeated by very strong Bateau Bay sides who will now continue further in the competition. Thank you to the parents who supported us by providing transport and cheering us on. Special thanks also to Mr. Jones who helped Mrs. Bath manage the teams by coaching the boys team, and organising their subs on the day, while Mrs Bath assisted the girls team. Congratulations must also go to Ms Trasler who had been busy coaching and preparing the two teams in training sessions at school in the lead up to the gala day, but unfortunately was unable to attend the day due to another school commitment. The teams displayed great sportsmanship in the way that they played as a team, and in showing respect to the referees and their opponents. The results of the games are detailed below:

Girls: BVPS defeated Chittaway Bay PS 2-1 BVPS defeated Terrigal PS 3-1 Bateau Bay PS defeated BVPS 3-0 Boys: BVPS defeated Chittaway Bay PS 8-0 BVPS defeated Killarney Vale PS 7-0 Bateau Bay PS defeated BVPS 3-1
