Introduction

The BI Survey 14 is based on findings from the world's largest and most comprehensive survey of

business intelligence end-users, conducted earlier this year. In total, 3,224 people responded to The

Survey with 2,348 answering a series of detailed questions about their usage of a named product.

Altogether, 34 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.

The BI Survey 14 examines BI product selection and usage among users in areas including business

benefits, costs, proportion of employees using the product, competitiveness, recommendation,

innovation, performance, customer satisfaction and agility.

We asked several questions that helped us measure the business benefits derived from respondents’

deployments. The combined results were then used as a calibration tool – The Business Benefits

Index (BBI) - which is widely used throughout The Survey to assess the correlation between various

factors and the achievement of benefits.

Information Builders overview

Information Builders is a privately held American software company with its head office in New York. It

has more than 1,400 employees and more than 60 offices worldwide. The product has been in active

use for 30 years and boasts a large community of experienced users. The company jumped directly

from the IBM mainframe world to the web.

Products include WebFOCUS Intelligence, the vendor’s platform for business intelligence, advanced

analytics, and performance management. Information Builders also has a line of real-time data

integration solutions it markets under its iWay Integration Solutions brand.

Information Builders designed its products for large systems environments. The vendor is notable for

the large number of platforms it supports and for the impressive numbers of users it can handle. The

tool is a graphical development environment that enables system designers to create complex

business intelligence and performance management content applications.

Previous years have seen Information Builders launch end-user-oriented products to support self-

service analysis and reporting within the line of business.

The vendor is among the highest regarded by customers in terms of the overall performance of its

products, as well as its after-sales support. Information Builders also received the highest ratings in

the survey as a supplier of operational BI tools, and is top-ranked in terms of enabling self-service

capabilities.

As a company, Information Builders draws many parallels with SAS, and the two products share many

technical features.

Information Builders customer responses

Information Builders appeared this year in The BI Survey with a sample of 45 users. Around 38

percent of participants said they were using WEBFOCUS version 8, while 62 percent were on version

What’s striking here is the large numbers of users the WebFOCUS environment supports, as is the

high average percentage of employees using it – 25 percent, versus the overall industry average of 15

percent. A large percentage use it for operational processes as well as for management reporting.

This is a highly scalable reporting environment providing large numbers of reports to large numbers of

users. Organizations have, on average, close to 1,500 users of the tool.

The majority of these users, 80 percent, are casual business users, suggesting that the tool is well

embedded into the businesses it serves.

Peer Groups

The BI Survey features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to ensure similar

products are compared against each other. The groups are essential to allow fair and useful

comparisons of products that are likely to compete.

The peer groups are primarily data-driven and based on how customers say they use the product.

Information Builders features in the following peer groups:

- Large scale enterprise reporting

- Dashboard

- Ad-hoc reporting

The KPIs

The BI Survey 14 provides the reader with well-designed KPI dashboards packed with concise

information, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:

- Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs

- KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey

- Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the

questions that feeds into the KPI are included

- Each KPI is normalized so that the overall sample always has a value of 1.0

- The KPIs are calculated so that better-than-average products always have scores of

greater than 1.0, while less good products score less than 1.0. When viewing the peer

group KPI charts, note that the average for each peer group will usually be either higher or

lower than 1.0 because the peer groups are all subsets of the overall sample.

The products are sorted by value: the better the product the higher the value. The average is

displayed as a green bar and separates the products into two groups, those that performed better than

average and those that performed worse than aver-age.

Information Builders dominates a range of categories as the vendor delivering the highest level of

business benefits. The vendor is ranked number one as the international BI vendor delivering the most

business benefits, as well as topping the lists of customer ratings for large scale enterprise reporting,

dashboarding, and ad-hoc reporting. The vendor offers a highly flexible BI Suite and has achieved

good results in the business achievement category. It is remarkable that it performed better in this

important category than all the larger vendors.

of most vendors in its space. Information Builders is the top-ranked international BI vendor and large

scale enterprise reporting vendor for delivering project success. The vendor also achieved excellent

ratings in the Dashboard and Ad-hoc Reporting peer groups, well above industry averages.

For the past three years, Information Builders has consistently been the top-ranked vendor in terms of

requiring minimal administrator resources. Along with good scalability, it also requires less effort to

administer larger Information Builders environments. BI applications can be centrally administered and

published to a large group of recipients. Compared to IBM, SAP and MicroStrategy, Information

Builders tops the list here because it is a well-developed and established solution in the market that

receives excellent customer feedback in the ‘Seats per administrator’ category.

As shown earlier in this report, Information Builders is typically used by at least one out of four

employees across enterprises, which is among the highest seen in this year’s BI Survey. Accordingly,

the vendor receives high ratings as a tool available and usable by employees across enterprises. With

its good scalability, Information Builders is capable of building applications that can be used by a large

number of employees within an organization.

As shown in the profile data at the beginning of this report, a typical Information Builders site has

about 1,500 users. It can be assumed that there are high numbers of users on the system at the same

time, but WebFOCUS appears to be ready for the challenge. With its good scalability, Information

Builders is capable of building applications that can be used by a large number of employees within an

organization.

Self-service is increasingly becoming a critical area sought by enterprises that want to open up

information to decision-makers at all levels. In many cases, especially in enterprises, IT and data

management professionals are simply too busy to build queries and reports for business users. In

recent years, Information Builders has been focusing on this problem, deploying front ends that

include a separate module for self-service BI. The survey results show great feedback ranking

Information Builders highly in the self-service BI category.

Agility is the watchword for many enterprises these days, as they seek to compete in fast-changing

and uncertain global markets. Information Builders products receive higher-than-average marks in

terms of agility, defined as tools that provide information in a short time frame, with great flexibility, and

delivered on a self-service basis.

Enterprises are looking for BI and analytics tools that can access and provide information in a

seamless manner, without the need to reconfigure technology or reprogram software. With its flexible

BI tool set, Information Builders allows users to develop individual BI applications quickly. The toolset

even provides its own development language to enhance the standard functions in the platform.

Ease of use is a critical piece of the user experience (UX), and needs to be reflected in the user

interface. Information Builders pays a great deal of attention to UX, as is evidenced in the ratings

provided by its customers. WebFOCUS is considered to be more user-friendly than most other large

scale enterprise reporting products.

Summary

Information Builders achieves high marks from its customers in terms of the overall performance of its

products and its after-sales support. Information Builders is also the top supplier of operational BI

tools, as well as self-service BI environments.

The privately held software company has been a leader in the enterprise BI market for more than two

decades, and continues to do well in the large-systems enterprise space. Its primary BI tool,

WebFOCUS, is also tightly integrated with its iWay data integration platform, and is highly scalable to

handle large datasets, as well as large groups of users.

Investments in Information Builders tools are typically not low. However, as has been the case in

previous surveys, the vendor continues to achieve the top ranking in lowest number of administrators

per seat. This implies that running costs are lower than its competitors. Information Builders also top-

ranked in delivering business benefits.

The results of this survey demonstrate that Information Builders is well-positioned to deliver solutions

its enterprise customers need to compete in the highly competitive global environment of the 21st

century.
