Information Builders again achie-ves outstanding results in the BI Survey 16 and ranks as the top performer in a number of KPIs in the large international BI vendors and large enterprise BI platforms peer groups.
Customers especially value Web-FOCUS’ flexibility, self-service and ease of use, and are also very satisfied with the solution’s overall performance and ability to process large data volumes. The results show that a “big vendor” can maintain a good level of customer support, and even beat specialists like Tableau and Qlik in the ‘Vendor support’ KPI.
Information Builders’ strong results in the ‘Business bene-fits’ and ‘Business value’ KPIs - among the most important measures in The BI Survey - de-monstrate that its customers get good value from the product and it gives them a good chance of achieving their business goals.

Introduction
THE BI Survey 16 is based on findings from the world‘s largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end users, conducted from February 2016 to May 2016. In total, 3,137 people responded to the sur-vey with 2,611 answering a series of detailed questions about their usage of a named pro-duct. Altogether, 37 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.
THE BI Survey 16 examines BI product selec-tion and usage among users in categories (KPIs) including business benefits, project success, business value, recommendation, customer satisfaction, customer experience, innovation and agility. There are 32 KPIs in total.
This document contains just a selection of the headline findings for Information Buil-ders. It does not show all the KPI results and focuses mainly on the positive findings.

This year’s Survey results show that Informa-tion Builders is mostly used for ad hoc query, standard reporting and dashboards, a testa-ment to the breadth of the WebFOCUS plat-form. Besides these traditional BI use cases, 68 percent of survey respondents also plan to use WebFOCUS for advanced analysis. In-formation Builders provides R Stat, a module with pre-defined R algorithms, which can be used for statistical analysis. R Stat results can be visualized using WebFOCUS functionality.
WebFOCUS is often used in large scenarios within large companies. In 2016, in a bid to boost its presence in the SME market, Infor-mation Builders introduced new editions of its software aimed at smaller accounts. Future BI Surveys will reveal how successful this stra-tegy turns out to be.
Comment
Peer Groups & KPIs THE BI Survey 16 features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to help identify competing products. The groups are essential to al-low fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete.
The peer groups have been defined by BARC ana-lysts using their experience and judgment, with segmentation based on two key factors:
1. Usage scenario - functional peer groups are mainly data-driven and ba-sed on how customers say they use the product.
2. Regional focus - is the vendor a large international vendor with a truly global presence or does it focus on a particu-lar region. We also take into account the location of BI Survey respondents.
Information Builders features in the following peer groups:
• Large enterprise BI platforms
• Large international BI vendors
Large enterprise BI platforms
Includes products equipped with functionality for enterprise deployments that focus on a broad range of BI use cases.
Dashboarding-focused products
Includes products that focus on creating advanced and highly sophisticated dashboards.

OLAP analysis-focused products
Includes products that focus on analysis in dimensio-nal and hierarchical data models.
Visual data discovery-focused products
Includes products that focus on visual data discovery and advanced data visualization.
Integrated performance management products
Includes products that provide integrated functiona-lity for BI and performance management, especially planning and budgeting.
Large international BI vendors
Includes products from companies with annual re-venues of $200m+ and a truly international reach.
EMEA-focused vendors
Includes products from vendors that have a signifi-cant presence in - and focus on - the EMEA region.
Americas-focused vendors
Includes products from vendors that have a signifi-cant presence in - and focus on - the Americas region.
THE BI Survey 16 provides the reader with well-de-signed KPI dashboards packed with concise infor-mation, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:
• Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs.
• KPIs may be based on one or more measures from THE BI Survey.
• Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feeds into the KPI are included.
• For quantitative data, KPIs are conver-ted to a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best).
• A linear min-max transformation is ap-plied, which preserves the order of, and the relative distance between, pro-ducts‘ scores.
The terms ‘top-ranked’ and ‘leader’ are used in the following KPI chart titles. ‘Top-ranked’ indicates first position. ‘Leader’ usually denotes a position in the top 20-25% of products listed in the chart.

Information Builders offers a highly flexible BI suite and achieves very good results in the ‘Bu-siness benefits’ KPI. The vendor ranks as the top performer in both the large international BI vendors and large enterprise BI platforms peer groups. In the large international BI vendors peer group - where Information Builders also competes with specialized data discovery ven-dors such as Tableau or Qlik -it has consistently managed to improve its business benefits ran-king each year since 2011. Information Builders has also maintained its top ranking in the large enterprise BI platforms peer group for the last four years. These results underline Information Builders’ successful strategy of carving out and focusing on values it can provide to its custo-mers rather than going for a “feature fight”.

Po-sitive results for project success and business benefits also show that customers appreciate the business value Information Builders can bring. In our consulting projects we regularly see Information Builders quoting reasonab-le prices for its solutions. WebFOCUS is mainly used in large scenarios in large enterprises. Besides providing functiona-lity for a range of BI use cases, the vendor also supplies a range of over 300 data connectors in its iWay product line. This ability to connect directly to numerous different data sources means WebFOCUS does not necessarily need to hold data in its own storage. We often see Information Builders used on top of large data warehouse applications or in scenarios with operational data. The BI Survey results indica-te that Information Builders customers seem to be satisfied with the way WebFOCUS handles higher data volumes.

WebFOCUS has consolidated its position as a leading large enterprise BI platform for colla-boration in the last three years, justifying the vendor’s investment in this area. Information Builders has always provided good support for exporting BI content in a number of different formats, and offers an interactive output for-mat called Active Technologies. This format is Flash-based and is stored and distributed as a PDF file. Notably, the file holds its data offline and provides interactivity for navigating cont-ent within the file. Mobile BI
23 ©2016 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group CompanyInformation Builders in
Information Builders has made improvements in its mobile BI rating compared to other lar-ge enterprise BI platforms. Some years ago it offered a hybrid application, which displayed Web content and had some additional mobile features such as libraries to host it. However, customer feedback to this mobile solution was not wholly positive.
However, the vendor has invested heavily in this area in recent years and is still working on re-building the WebFOCUS suite to be fully responsive. Responsive design results in flexi-ble UIs which change format (and sometimes visualization) depending on the screen size of the device in use. The suite is also being mo-dernized and ported to the HTML5 standard, which offers better capabilities and interactivi-ty on mobile devices.

Information Builders receives good customer feedback for visual design standards compared to its rivals in the large international BI vendors and large enterprise BI platforms peer groups. The vendor has always provided an extensive range of different visualizations that can be customized to create visualization standards within an enterprise. By porting the solution to HTML5, the vendor has improved its charting functionality, especially in terms of rendering performance. Charting remains an investment area for Information Builders: the vendor alrea-dy provides support for the D3 open library in its enterprise edition. Information Builders not only supports advanced visualizations but also their integration and availability as standard vi-sualizations within the enterprise.

The WebFOCUS platform is a leader among large enterprise BI platforms in terms of loca-tion intelligence. Dealing with spatial data is becoming increasingly important for BARC‘s customers. Analyzing and displaying spatial in-formation and combining it with existing enter-prise data sources often provides new insights into data. Operational BI is not only a highly strategic area for Information Builders but also a use case for which the vendor has been rated num-ber one in the large international BI vendors and large enterprise BI platforms peer groups for the last three years. The WebFOCUS suite is good for retrieving metadata from disparate data sources and for analyzing and visualizing relevant content. The vendor’s iWay portfolio of over 300 adapters enables WebFOCUS to connect directly to data sources without repli-cating data.
Information Builders also supports the creation of individual portals and BI applications (Info-Apps) with write-back functionality to help ope-rational staff consume pre-defined analytical information and execute actions in operational systems.

Innovation
31 ©2016 BARC - Business Application Research Center, a CXP Group CompanyInformation Builders in
Information Builders is a grounded vendor: it knows its strengths and does not go chasing every trend in the BI area. However, with some investment in a few key trending areas, it has been able to improve its innovation rating in the last five years.
Currently the WebFOCUS platform has featu-res covering all the major BI trends, including InfoAssist Plus for self-service BI and data dis-covery, RStat for predictive analytics and ESRI integration for location intelligence. By making these enhancements to the suite, customers now perceive Information Builders as an inno-vative vendor.

Information Builders’ vendor support rating is very impressive. The vendor has come top in the large enterprise BI platforms and large in-ternational BI vendors peer groups for the last three years, beating off competition from all the software industry giants as well as specia-lists such as Tableau and Qlik.

Performance satisfaction

Information Builders customers report few performance-related problems, which leads to WebFOCUS achieving a leading position in the large enterprise BI platforms peer group. Performance is especially important for end users working with the software. Acceptance of a solution in an organization can be serious-ly impaired if it delivers data and visualizations slowly. The performance of the front end, whe-re results are calculated and visualizations are rendered, is just as important as data-related performance in influencing user experience.
