FROM THE RABBI’S DESKTo many, the initials R.C.A. are reminiscent of a popular electronics company that was cutting edge in its time, but has been defunct since 1986. However, to me and over 1,000 Rabbis across North America, the acronym R.C.A. is very much alive, vibrant, and active. I am proud to serve as a national Vice President for the Rabbinical Council of America, a prestigious professional organization that serves as a voice of the Modern Orthodox Rabbinate and provides important services to its members. One of the most important functions of the RCA is to bring Rabbis together and to cultivate a sense of camaraderie, brotherhood, and connection for a group of individuals who can sometimes feel isolated and alone.

This week, the RCA held its annual convention. Unlike most years when it is held in NY, this year’s meeting was hosted in LA and was attended by Rabbis from across the country. There were some great sessions, but the most impactful part of the program, for me, came from a very unexpected place. Over the course of the conference, I had the opportunity to meet and shmooze with many Rabbis. Naturally, the conversation turned to Shul life and how things are going. After listening to many colleagues, I came away from the RCA conference with a renewed sense of how lucky, fortunate, and blessed I am to be the Rabbi of Boca Raton Synagogue.

Allow me to share the top ten reasons why BRS is the best place to be a Rabbi in the whole world:

1. You treat me and my family like we are part of your family. We have been blessed to forge incredible relationships and have learned so much from so many of you.

2. Our lay leadership, particularly our President, couldn’t be easier to work with. They are amazingly supportive, caring, and concerned for the Rabbis and staff.

3. “That’s not the way we do it here” has never been said at BRS. You give us the freedom and flexibility to introduce new ideas, programs, and plans, as long as they are financially responsible and make sense.

4. I have the best co-workers who each are talented, committed to the BRS mission and fun to work with. 5. You keep moving in, without our even doing a recruitment campaign. This past year, 35 new families moved to Boca and joined

the BRS community. This summer, we are already expecting a great influx of new families as well. 6. You volunteer when we need you to help make a Shiva Minyan, cook a meal, stuff envelopes in the office, or donate blood, and you

do it all with a smile on your face. 7. You are passionate about Israel and participate in making our voices heard as pro Israel activists at AIPAC and beyond.8. You care deeply about Outreach and assist Rabbi Josh Broide and BRS in meeting new people who could benefit from our programs

and classes. 9. You love to learn - on your own, with Chavrusas or when you come to one of the many Shiurim our community is privileged to

offer. You filled up our Achdut B’Torah Siyum chart in record time.10. You are philanthropic, generous and kind and help me care for those less privileged through Tomchei Shabbat, the Scholarship

Fund, and the Chesed Fund.

“Lechu vanim shim’u li, Go my sons, listen to me.” The pasuk should say, “Bo, come my sons,” why does it say go? Sometimes, you have to go away to take notice of the greatest blessing that is right in front of your face. You and I are not perfect and, as a community, we certainly have things to work on. But, on the whole, the BRS community is a great blessing for me and my family, and I hope you see it as enriching you and your family as well.

Shabbat Shalom,

“Right Under Your

Nose”

BRS OUTREACH REVOLUTIONAm Yisrael Chai

Last week the teenagers of our community made an amazing presentation about their experience in Poland and Israel on the March of the Living. Many people approached me to find out how they can participate on the experience next year and I am happy to announce that because of all the interest there will be a meeting at the beginning of June to start signing people up for the next trip. It’s impossible to detail every story in a short presentation, but there is one that I wanted to tell everyone. It was Erev Shabbat in Israel and we all got up early to travel to Masada, the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi. Although many of the teens had been to these classic historical sites, there was one thing that was going to be very different this time around. Warren and Robin Struhl are involved in the writing of yet another Torah in the original synagogue that stands on top of Masada, in the room known as the Geniza. So our group made special arrangement to meet the sofer that goes to Masada everyday to complete the writing of the sacred scroll. Most of the teens have never seen a real Torah being written, so imagine their surprise when they found out that they would have a chance to participate in this special mitzvah. The sofer explained

the significance of this Torah being written right here on Masada and at this time in our history. Because although the Romans conquered Masada almost 2,000 years ago, just look who is standing here now and who has been relegated to the pages of history books. Just to think that if the Romans had their way, we shouldn’t be around and yet we are around and we’re stronger than ever on top of the world writing a Torah with our survivors and our Jewish future, the teens of our community. Am Yisrael Chai!!!Inspire yourself to inspire others…Josh

EMORRules respecting Kohanim. Because of his privileged status, the Kohen had to maintain a particularly high standard of purity and perfection. Any physical defect disqualified the Kohen from officiating in the Mishkan, although he was still entitled to his share of the sacrifices.

Rules respecting sacrifices. Sacrifices, too, had to be free of blemishes. A mother and its young could not be killed on the same day.

Yom Tov. During the year, a number of days were designated as Yom Tovim. These holy days, on which no work is permitted, were proclaimed in the following order: Shabbat, Pesach, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shemini Atzeret.

The Mishkan. The people were reminded of their duty to provide pure olive oil for the lamps of the Holy Temple, which were to be kept burning continuously by the Kohanim. The show bread was to be made of twelve loaves of fine flour, arranged in two stacks.

HALACHIC QUESTION OF THE WEEKQ: May a warming drawer be used to heat food on Shabbat? Does it make a difference if it is liquid or solid, Friday night or Shabbat day?

A: Yes, a warming drawer may be used, but, if it has a control knob, it should be covered. All types of food may be left in the drawer before Shabbat to be removed and used Friday night. Only solid food without a significant amount of liquid, though, may be placed in the warming drawer on Shabbat day to be heated. The warming drawer may be used at its highest setting, even if it is hotter than Yad Soledes Bo (130 degrees).

PARSHA SUMMARY

1. Does a Kohen have an option regarding becoming ritually defiled when his unmarried sister passes away? 21:3 - No, he is required to do so.

2. How does one honor a Kohen? 21:8 - He is first in all matters of holiness. For example, a Kohen reads from the Torah first, and is usually the one to lead the blessings before and after meals.

3. How does the Torah restrict the Kohen Gadol with regard to mourning? 21:10-12 - He may not allow his hair to grow long, nor attend to his close relatives if they die, nor accompany a funeral procession.

4. Who in the household of a Kohen may eat Terumah? 22:11 - He, his wife, his sons, his unmarried daughters, and his non-Jewish slaves.

5. How does the Torah define “profaning” the Name of G-d? 22:32 - Willfully transgressing the commandments.

6. On what day do we begin to “count the Omer”? 23:15 - On the 16th of Nisan.7. Why do we begin counting the Omer at night? 23:15 - The Torah requires counting

seven complete weeks. If we begin counting in the daytime, the seven weeks would not be complete, because according to the Torah a day starts at nightfall.

8. The blowing of the Shofar on Rosh Hashanah is called a “Zichron Teruah” (sound of remembrance). For what is it a reminder? 23:24 - The Akeidas (binding of) Yitzchak.

9. What is unusual about the wood of the Etrog tree? 23:40 - It has the same taste as the fruit.

10. What is the penalty for intentionally wounding one’s parent? 24:21 - Death.

ENHANCED GOLD

Three years ago, Boca Raton Synagogue  launched the Pillar Society for those members that wish to help our synagogue continue to offer the highest possible level of educational, religious, and social programming to our community.  This year we have added a Silver level for members ages 36 and under.

We are fortunate in our community to have a number of members who give above and beyond, year after year.  We thank you for your past generosity and appeal to you and others to become members of Pillar Society – to be the leaders of Torah,  Avodah, and Gemilut Chasadim in our community.

Pillar Society provides a backbone to our community, and your commitment enables the Shul to provide for the needs of all our members, regardless of ability to pay. May you and your family be truly blessed in the coming year.

SOCIAL ACTIONStand With Us has just released a video announcing a new campaign to counter anti-Israel activity on college campuses. The campaign includes an “Israel Matters” display which is a response to the infamous anti-Israel Wall used during Israel Apartheid Week. By presenting the facts in a non-confrontational manner, the display dispels lies presented by

those behind Israel Apartheid week and by others intent upon demonizing Israel. To see the video, check the Stand With Us website [email protected]. Mark your calendars--BRS is putting together an exciting program to commemorate Yom Yerushalayim, Sunday, May 20.

SHOMREI OLAM Happy Mothers Day from Shomrei Olam! Many mothers want to protect their families but don’t know how. One way is to use kid-safe cleaning products. Expectant mothers should limit their exposure to harmful chemicals, and replacing household cleaning products with organic, non-

toxic options benefits children both before and after birth. According to Inhabitots, the Environmental Working Group warns that the following toxins should be avoided in baby products: 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-DIOL (or Bronopol), BHA, DMDM Hydantoin, Oxybenzone, Triclosan, Boric Acid and Sodium Borate, Dibutyl Pthalate and Toluene. Those are a lot of ingredients. Next week, we will give a recipe for a make your own effective safe cleaner. For more information, contact [email protected].

FOCUS ON OUR LEADERS

DO YOU KNOW…. Yitzy Griner?

Group: Shadow Group leader since: 2011 School: 11th grader WYHS Yitzy loves the inspiration he draws and others draw from the children that he engages with on Shabbat. Their love of mitzvot is infectious and he looks forward to being inspired each Shabbat.

Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski Israel Jewish history will look back at this generation with an odd curiosity. After 2,000 years of yearning to return to our homeland, our dream was granted…and some of us took advantage of it. Similar to how we look unfavorably at Ezra’s generation, where of the million or so Jews who were given permission to return and rebuild the Beit Hamikdash, only 42,000 Jews moved to Eretz Yisrael, history will wonder how we didn’t move to Eretz Yisrael when the opportunity presented itself. As adults, we’ll have to answer for our choice. Our teenagers, though, were born into households without an option to move immediately. How great is it though that our teenagers jump at the opportunity to travel to Eretz Yisrael. Over the last two weeks alone, the Boca Raton Synagogue sent over 100 of its teenagers to Israel. How blessed we are to celebrate our children’s love for their homeland!

LOOK!
