Welcome! At Bethel Baptist Church, we place a high priority on creating new disciples within our church body. Just before Christ returned to heaven He gave His final instructions for those who follow Him – “Go therefore and make disciples… teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…” (Mathew 28:19-20). The Apostle Paul also stressed the need for discipleship when he encouraged Timothy, and all of us in 2 Timothy 2:2 – “And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful who will be able to teach others also.” As Christians who desire to be obedient to Christ in all things, we have no choice but to be involved in reaching the world around us and teaching them to live like Christ. The number one goal of our discipleship program is to train Christians how to correctly apply the Word of God to their own lives and to be able to teach others to do the same.

Before You Begin TEACHERS: This book is designed to be used in the discipleship process with one who has already gone through the New Believer Handbook or has enough knowledge and experience in the Word to skip that handbook.

Lesson 1 – Principles of Right and Wrong Objective: To be able to determine God's will when it comes to knowing what is right and wrong for the believer.

Introduction Think back to your early childhood days - where did you get your ideas about what was right and wrong? More than likely, you learned your moral boundaries from your parents, family, teachers, and your church. Today, people are bombarded with different views of what is “right and wrong.” Television, books, movies, and “stars” are all promoting their own brand of right and wrong. Frequently, their philosophy involves any of the following ideas:

• If it feels good, do it!

• If it works, it must be right!

• The end justifies the means!

• What’s right/wrong for you may not be what’s right/wrong for me!

The new believer will be faced with questions of what he should or should not do now that he is a Christian. Many of those questions will not be answered directly from the Bible. But the Bible contains many principles. By applying these principles to your question, it will become clearer what God intends for you to do in that situation.

A principle is a rule or law by which one governs their life.

Page 7: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

7

As Christians, we need sound Biblical principles - especially for the so-called “gray areas” of life - those areas that are not specifically stated in black and white terms. These gray areas we face today range from the seemingly “small things” in life – like should we watch a certain movie – all the way to the biggies – like is it ok to pull a feeding tube from a brain-damaged person? In this lesson, we will uncover what the Bible says about some very important topics that will help you be better able to answer life’s questions that are not specifically answered in the Bible.

Describing Biblical Principles

Revenge

It has nothing to do with avenging myself. I will leave vengeful thoughts and allow God to deal with the person as He deems best.

Forgiveness

I can demonstrate forgiveness in this. My forgiveness is modeled after that of Christ’s forgiveness.

Romans 12:19 - Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

Matthew 18:21-22 - 21Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Page 8: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

8

Conformity

This won’t conform me to Satan’s world. I am to be conforming myself to the image of Christ--not Satan or the world. Romans 8:29 Do my speech, attitude, music, activities, and goals pattern Christ or the world?

Preference

I can put others before me in this. I can be a servant in this rather than focusing on being served.

Peace

I can maintain peace with others in this.

Ephesians 4:32 - And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even God in Christ forgave you.

Romans 12:1-2 - 1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:10 - Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;

Romans 12:18 - If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

Page 9: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

9

Do I strive for unity in relationships rather than “getting my way?”

Subjection

It can show my subjection to authority. Am I submitting to and supporting the authorities in my life?

• Parents

• Teachers

• Boss

• Pastor

• Police

• Government

Example

It can allow me to be a good example to others. I won’t do anything to intentionally trip up a fellow believer in their Christian walk.

Psalm 133:1 - Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Romans 13:1 - Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

Romans 14:13 - Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.

Page 10: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

10

What kind of athlete would intentionally trip up a teammate in the middle of a championship race in order to come in first himself?

Expedience

It can be profitable or useful to me. Everything I do as a Christian should contribute in some way to the overall purpose which God has for my life. If something – be it an activity, some form of entertainment, a personal attitude or whatever -- isn’t expedient or useful toward that purpose, then it doesn’t have a place in my life. (Watching TV for hours when the hours could be spent on homework, Bible study, ministry, repairs at home)

Enslavement

I can be Spirit controlled in this. I will guard who or what controls my mind, body, emotions, perspective, ambitions, and will.

Body

1 Corinthians 6:12a - All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful.

1 Corinthians 6:12b - All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 - 19Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Page 11: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

11

This doesn’t harm God’s temple. What I eat, drink, see, think about, participate in…doesn’t harm the body.

Edification

It can help build up other Christians. Will this act, word or attitude “build up” other believers in becoming like Christ?

Example centers on the thought of being a general “model” of Christ-likeness. Edification involves a stronger sense of actively building up my fellow Christians.

Exaltation

It can glorify God. I want to maintain a godly character before God. No thought, word, or action should be allowed to mar the reflection of who God is or prevent His qualities from being developed in me.

1 Corinthians 10:23 - All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.

1 Corinthians 10:31 - Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Page 12: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

12

Yoke

This won’t bind me to unbelievers. I won’t join together in dating, marriage, business partnerships with unbelievers.

Goodness

I can show goodness to others in this. Do I look for opportunities to help others or try to avoid opportunities to do good? (Good Samaritan)

Evangelism

It can help spread the gospel. My actions, attitude, and choices affect my ability to witness to the lost. Are we doing things to make it easier or harder for them to believe in Christ’s ability to change a life and give it meaning?

2 Corinthians 6:14 - Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? Amos 3:3 - Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?

Galatians 6:10 - Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Colossians 4:5 - Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.

Page 13: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

13

Appearance

I’m free from the appearance of evil in this. What I’m doing can’t be misconstrued by others as something evil. If there is a question about this being right--I will err to the side of safety and what is definitely right in God’s eyes.

Lust

I’m free from any chance to lust in this (Lust = Selfish desires) I won’t satisfy normal desires in selfish, sinful ways.

• Lust for food by gluttony

• Lust for sex by immorality or pornography

• Lust for money by greed

Excess

It doesn’t slow me down spiritually.

A “weight” can be a habit, friend, ambition – Virtually anything can slow you down.

1 Thessalonians 5:22 - Abstain from every form of evil.

Romans 14:23 - But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

2 Timothy 2:22 - Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Hebrews 12:1 - Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

Page 14: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

14

Emulation

I can imitate Christ in this.

▪ Do my words, thoughts, demeanor and deeds emulate (imitate) Jesus Christ?

➢ These principles, when applied along with the direct

commands of God in His Word, make it fairly clear as to the proper choice God would make in that situation.

1 John 2:6 - He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. 1 Peter 2:21 - For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.

Lesson 2 – Biblical Authority Objective: To come to understand that the Bible is fully inspired by God and is the sole authority for my life and my beliefs.

Introduction The Bible is the Word of God, but what does that mean and why do we believe it? As the Word of God it speaks with final authority in every area that it addresses. As the Word of God, it is to be believed and obeyed. I must have an open mind to it in every area. I must honestly seek to know what it teaches, not just accept what I like. Every area of life must now be evaluated in the light of God's Word and I must change my opinion and practice when I understand that the Bible teaches something contrary to what I believe.

The Origin of Scripture

God's Revelation

Revelation is "imparted truth" to man from God that previously was unknown and could not be known by any other means but God.

God reveals himself to man through several different means:

Page 17: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

17

Through nature -

Through messengers and prophets -

Through Christ -

The greatest revelation that we have available to us today is through the Scriptures.

God's Inspiration One of the reasons that we consider the Bible to be completely accurate is because we believe it was “inspired” by God himself. An artist, writer or inventor is "inspired" to a great work. They are motivated by a particular idea or feeling to do something. Before the masterpiece is done--many changes occur, as well as errors. To say that the Bible was divinely inspired means that the writers were empowered and controlled by the Holy Spirit in such a way as to record God's authoritative and unerring message without a mistake.

Romans 1:19-20 - 19because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.

Hebrews 1:1 - God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,

Hebrews 1:2 - has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;

Page 18: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

18

The word inspiration means "God breathed." We believe that the Bible was inspired both verbally and plenary.

Verbal Inspiration: Words were inspired - not just the thoughts and concepts. Plenary Inspiration: All of scripture is inspired -not just part of it.

The Word is inspired – not the men. Only the original writings were inspired – not the translations and copies down through the years. One divine author (Holy Spirit) controlled 40 human authors over a period of 1500 years to have a complete book without error.

The Authority of the Bible Because the Bible is inspired by God, we believe that the Bible carries God’s authority. This means that we believe that the Bible should direct how we live our life. The authority of Scripture is seen in multiple passages:

2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Page 19: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

19

As Seen by Christ

Christ came to fulfill the scriptures. He viewed scripture as accurate, important and indestructible – words that cannot be undone or destroyed by anything.

Matthew 5:17-19 – 17“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

John 10:35 - If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

Matthew 24:35 - Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Page 20: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

20

As Seen by Paul The Apostle Paul believed that all scripture was inspired and profitable.

Paul believed the purpose of scripture was:

• To give us doctrine

• To give us guidelines for reproof

• To help in correcting our faults

• To give instruction in right living Paul also viewed his writings as from the Lord:

2 Timothy 3:14-17 - 14But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

1 Corinthians 14:36-37 - 36Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached? 37If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

Page 21: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

21

As Seen by Peter Peter viewed Paul's writings as scripture

Peter wrote to believers to give them a permanent record of the truth.

Peter cited his eyewitness account of Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration as the authority and accuracy of his writings.

2 Peter 3:14-16 - 14Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

2 Peter 1:15 - Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have a reminder of these things after my decease.

2 Peter 1:16-18 - 16For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

Page 22: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

22

As Seen by Us As believers, we hold that the Word of God is not on the same level as other books--it is on a higher plane, free of error. Scripture is THE AUTHORITY among many other authorities.

The Significance of the Bible The Bible is God’s method of revealing himself to us today. It is divinely inspired and authoritative for us. This makes the Bible very significant in our life today!

It Is Authoritative and Profitable

Doctrine: Basic beliefs – The Bible shows me the path to walk on Reproof: Convicts of sin - The Bible shows how I have wandered from the path Correction: Idea of improvement - The Bible shows me how to get back on the path Instruction: Training - The Bible shows me how to stay on the path

It Is an Absolute Standard The world says there are no "absolutes" in the world -everything is "relative" God's standards are absolute, showing what is right and wrong.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - 16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Lesson 3 – Two Natures

Objective: To understand the characteristics of the two natures within every believer and to reduce the influence of the old nature and to allow the new nature to dominate us.

Introduction New Christians may sometimes become confused by the intense

battle that rages within them.

The "all things become new" statement in 2 Corinthians 5:17

includes the conflict of old and new natures.

Salvation doesn't eliminate all the problems we face in life. But,

it can bring new problems to our lives. We must know the

distinction between our position (standing) in Christ and our

actual experience (state).

The Flesh Versus the Spirit In Galatians 5:16-26, Paul writes about the battle Christians face between their sin nature (the flesh) and their new nature (the spirit). Studying this passage will help us to better understand how our life should appear when we follow the spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Page 25: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

25

Terms

Flesh--refers to the sinful human nature (old man)

Spirit—refers to the divine nature we receive through

Christ (new man)

The Conflict

There is a constant battle between the flesh and Spirit. The consequence of this conflict is confusion and frustration—you don’t understand why you do evil. We can overcome the sinful desires of the flesh by “walking in the Spirit” which simply means that we follow and obey Christ instead of our old sinful desires.

The Deeds of the Flesh are Very Evil

Galatians 5:16 - I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17 - For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Galatians 5:19-21 - 19Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Page 26: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

26

Looking at the world around us we can see that man is capable of doing some very evil things. This passage lists many of those things – some of which we consider to be very evil but some we typically don’t. Envy and selfish ambitions are rarely held as evil things, especially when compared with murder

There Are No Positive Qualities in the Flesh

Paul writes in this verse that there is nothing inherently good in man. This goes against what the world teaches – that man is basically good and is only corrupted by society or the environment they grew up in.

Evidence of the Spirit-Controlled Life A life that is controlled by the flesh will be filled with those evil works listed in verses 19-21. But the life that is controlled by the Spirit of God will bear the “fruit of the Spirit.”

There are several key concepts that we need to understand from this passage:

The word "fruit" is singular. We are to develop all these characteristics together as one fruit on a tree. It is not enough to exhibit one or two or even several of these characteristics – a believer should have evidence of all of these fruits in their life.

Romans 7:18 - For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

Galatians 5:22-23 - 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Page 27: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

27

A Spirit-controlled life will "crucify the flesh."

To “crucify the flesh” means that the Christian is daily saying “NO” to the desires of the flesh. But, it is not enough to simply say no to our old ways. We must also say “YES” every day to the desires of the Spirit.

The “Put Off – Put On” Principle A very helpful principle for Christians is known as the “put off – put on” principle, taken from Ephesians 4:22-24.

Galatians 5:24 - And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Colossians 3:5-9 - 5Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. 8But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him...

Ephesians 4:22-24 - 22that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Page 28: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

28

Step #1 - Put off the old man (flesh)

Verse 22 tells us to put off the old nature – we need to decide

to stop our sinning NOW! One of the problems that we have

today is that we fail to call sin what it really is. We use words

like bad habits, mistakes and poor judgment to describe sin. In

reality, sin is a direct violation of God’s standards!

Step #2 - Put on the new man (Spirit)

Verse 24 tells us that we need to put on the new man – we need to start living a holy life like Christ lived. This means that we literally do the opposite of the sin we earlier did

Step #3 - Renew the spirit of your mind

Verse 23 uses the phrase “renew the spirit of your mind” to help us understand one of the changes that needs to take place when we become Christians.

To renew means to restore or to replenish; to revive or reestablish.

We need to acknowledge the connection of thoughts with

deeds and change the way we think.

As believers, we need to evaluate our thoughts using God’s

Word to determine if they are sinful or God honoring.

Once you determine the presence of sinful thought patterns,

use the grid of Philippians 4:8 to determine what is the correct

thought pattern that should replace it.

Proverbs 23:7 - For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.

• Are my thoughts True?

• Are my thoughts Noble?

• Are my thoughts Just?

• Are my thoughts Pure?

• Are my thoughts Lovely?

• Are my thoughts Good Report?

• Are my thoughts Virtuous?

• Are my thoughts Praiseworthy?

If the answer to any of these questions is negative, you need to reconsider what you are doing.

Conclusion As long as we live on this earth, we will have a battle between the flesh and Spirit. Even the Apostle Paul said that he struggled with this battle:

Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Romans 7:15-20 - 15For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

Our motivation for victory over the flesh must be based on pleasing God rather than pleasing others or ourselves. If we desire to change our lives for the wrong motives, we will

be unsuccessful.

• If we change simply to please ourselves, we are likely to

quit when it gets difficult. Motives for change:

• If we change simply to please others, we will soon get

to the place where we feel we cannot ever please

everyone.

Our motives for changing are spelled out in

2 Corinthians 5:9-10:

• To “please God” with our lifestyle

• To be prepared to stand before God and give an

account of how we lived our lives

Remember, we do not have the power to change our lives. The power to change from the flesh to the Spirit comes from Jesus Christ working in my life.

2 Corinthians 5:9-10 - 9Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Romans 7:24-25 - 24O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Lesson 4 – The Role of the Church

Introduction

1. We should have a goal for the new believer to get involved in a biblical church.

• They probably don’t understand “why” they should go to church on a regular basis.

• They probably don’t know “what” the purpose of the church is either.

2. We need to make known the priority and value of attending church on a regular basis.

I. The Meaning of Church

A. Definition of the Church 1. The Universal Church

• The church (ecclesia: “called out ones”) is made up of people (from among the world) who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior.

(Christ promised to build His “church”—not “churches.”)

• The church is referred to as “The Body of Christ” and Christ is its Head.

Matthew 16:18 - And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Page 33: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

33

• Each person who accepts Christ as Savior is part of the Body of Christ.

2. The Local Church

• “Church” is also used of a group of professed believers in any one locality. They have been immersed and associated together by a covenant of faith.

1 Corinthians 12:12,13 - 12For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body – whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free – and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

Ephesians 1:22,23 - 22And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. (Christ is Head of the universal church.)

Ephesians 5:25 - Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her...

Acts 8:1 - Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.

Acts 20:17 - From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.

Romans 16:1 - I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea.

34

• They assisted the needy Acts 2:44,45

• They had apostles and deacons leading the group Acts 6:1-7

• They later chose men as “elders” (pastors) to lead the them Acts 14:23 Titus 1:5

B. Distinctives of the Church (They were organized) 1. They adhered to a definite doctrinal standard

Acts 2:42 2. They met for fellowship Acts 2:42 3. They met for prayer Acts 2:42 4. They practiced baptism Acts 2:41 5. They observed the Lord’s Supper Acts 2:42,46 6. 6. They kept account of church growth Acts 2:14, 41; 4:4 7. They met for public worship Acts 2:46 8. They disciplined sinning members Matt. 18:15-17,

1 Corinthians 5:1-5, 9-13 9. They had two offices

• Pastor (Bishop, Elder, Shepherd)

Page 35: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

35

1 Timothy 3:1-7 - 1This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5(for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Page 36: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

36

• Deacon (To minister, to serve) ➢ They assist the pastor in the ministry of the church

Titus 1:5-7 - 5For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you-- 6if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money...

Acts 6:1-6 - 1Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word." 5And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

37

II. The Mission of the Church A. To Glorify God 1. To glorify God means to give honor, reverence, homage in thought, feeling, or act to Him.

2. Westminster Larger Catechism

• Question 1. What is the chief end of man?

• Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

1 Timothy 3:8-13 - 8Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11Likewise their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 50:23 - Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; And to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God."

1 Peter 2:9 - But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Page 38: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

38

3. To glorify God is the mission of individual believers and the church.

Romans 15:5,6 - 5Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, 6that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 3:20-21 - 20Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen

1 Peter 4:11 - If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Page 39: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

39

B. To edify its members 1. God gave gifted men to train and equip others to

serve God more effectively. 2. To teach them to distinguish truth from heresy

Ephesians 1:5-14 - 5having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him. 11In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

40

❖ What are some practical means of “edifying” other believers in our church? ▪ Teaching/preaching of the Word ▪ Music ministry ▪ Encouragement ▪ Use of spiritual gifts to meet needs

Ephesians 4:11-16 - 11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head – Christ – 16from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

Colossians 2:6, 7 - 6As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

1 Corinthians 14:26 - How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

Page 41: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

41

❖ What will happen to a church if they fail to edify each other? ▪ Members will feel unneeded, unfulfilled and

discouraged. ▪ People with needs will go elsewhere to find

someone to comfort and help them. ▪ We will fail to see spiritual growth take place in the

lives of people.

C. To evangelize the world 1. The Great Commission is to “go” with the gospel.

Matthew 28:19-20 - Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Mark 16:15 - And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Acts 1:8 - But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

2 Corinthians 5:17-19 - 17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Page 42: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

42

2. We are to “evangelize” the world—not “convert” the

world to Christ.

• We have an obligation to tell the world of Christ’s offer of salvation.

• Many will not respond to our message but we are obligated to share it.

D. To act as a restraining and enlightening force in the world

1. We are called the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.”

2. The Christian’s influence and testimony help hold back the development of evil.

Matthew 5:13-16 - 13You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

Jude 3 - Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.

Page 43: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

43

❖ In what specific way(s) does your life either restrain evil or enlighten the lost to their need of a Savior? ▪ Our speech, actions, responses and goals are a stark

contrast between God’s way of life and that of lost sinners.

❖ In what ways can we as a church restrain evil or enlighten the lost world around us? ▪ Speak out about issues in public forums ▪ Show the love of Christ to those who have no

relationship with God.

E. To promote all that is good 1. While we are to separate from all worldly alliances,

we should support all causes that seek to promote the social, economic, political, and education welfare of the community.

Philippians 2:14-16 - 14Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

Page 44: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

44

• Primary duty to care for believers

• Secondary duty to care for the world

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 - 14Do not be unequally yoked

together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." 17Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean And I will receive you."

Galatians 6:10 - Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.

Acts 10:38-43 - 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. 39And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. 40Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, 41not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. 42And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 43To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins."

Page 45: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

45

2. The promoting of good deeds must be secondary in priority to the work of evangelism.

• Jesus did good deeds so that He might share who He was and the life He offered others.

• Our good works must testify to Christ.

❖ What kind of “good deeds” do we as a church do for believers?

❖ What kind of “good deeds” do we as a church do for unbelievers?

F. To observe the ordinances (rite or ceremony)

1. Baptism

2. Lord’s Table

Matthew 28:19 - Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Matthew 10:32 - Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.

Acts 2:41 - Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

1 Corinthians 11:23-30 - 23For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."

Page 46: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

46

25In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. 27Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.

Lesson 5 –Choosing a Church

Choosing the Right Church Objective: To enable the new believer to choose a church that will meet his spiritual growth needs and provide a place to develop and use his spiritual gifts and talents in ministry.

Questions to Help Find the Right Church Looking for the right church to attend can be a very daunting and sometimes frustrating job. Even in the smallest towns there are usually a number of options when it comes to where to go to church. The following questions can help you determine whether or not a church is right for you: 1. Does the church present the Biblical plan of salvation?

• Sinfulness of man

• Deity, Incarnation and Virgin Birth of Christ

• Substitutionary death of Christ for our sins

• Bodily resurrection of Christ

• Repentance toward God for our sin

• Salvation is a gift of God received by faith in Jesus Christ (as opposed to works)

2. Does the church believe in and practice regenerate (born

again) membership? 3. Does the church teach the importance of baptism

(immersion) for the believer to demonstrate obedience to Christ's command and to show our identification with Christ?

Page 49: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

49

4. Does the church biblically observe the ordinance of the Lord's Table?

5. Is it a praying church? 6. Is there a concern for one another among the members?

Do they minister to each other's needs? 7. Do they minister to the needs of other's outside of their

own church? 8. Is there unity among the people? 9. Are souls being saved? 10. Are you growing spiritually from the ministry of this church? 11. Does the church proclaim and do the people practice

holiness of life? Separation from worldliness? 12. Does the church minister to all age groups of people? 13. Does the church have a worldwide outreach of evangelism –

local and world missions programs? 14. Are its people witnesses? 15. Is there Biblical organization of the church?

• Independent, sovereign church – not part of a denomination

• Self-governing of its own business

• Congregational rule in policy and decisions

• Indigenous—self-supporting, owns its own property

• Officers are elected by the membership 16. Is there cooperation with other churches of similar faith and

practice?

Page 50: Discipleship Level 2 Handbook - BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH ......Continuing the Christian Journey Bethel Baptist Church 200 Hunt Road Jamestown, NY 14701 716-484-9221 Bethelbaptistjamestown.org

50

17. Does the church refuse to cooperate with churches and

organizations that do not teach and practice the truth? 18. Does the pastor show a servant's heart for his people?

Does he lead the flock or push the flock? 19. Is the church financially sound in its business dealings?

20. What is the reputation of the church and its members in the

community? 21. Is God leading me to this church to minister or am I coming

here simply because of nice facilities, friendly people, it's easy to get lost in the large church, great music and youth programs.

Before making any final decision regarding which church you will attend, make sure that you have prayed long and hard about it. God has a purpose for every person that he places in a church – this means that whatever church God leads you to there is a specific place of ministry for you. If you are simply looking for a church that meets your needs and “feeds you” as you want to be fed, you will never find the perfect church. But, if you are looking for a church in which you can grow through learning and serving, God will direct you.
