The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) announced the creation of the first national organization for women's collegiate, non-varsity ice hockey. Fourteen clubs signed up and never looked back.

Following that 2000-2001 season's success, the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) took notice. Founded in 1971, the DVCHC was (and still is) a well-respected regional hockey league with a tradition of admitting teams that were members of the ACHA. Organizing the area's ACHA women's teams was a bold but logical next step. In 2002 the DVCHC's newly formed Women's DII division played its first full season, tournament and an All-Star game. Penn State (PA), University of Pennsylvania (PA), University of Maryland (MD), American University (DC) and Drexel University (PA) were the founding teams. That year the veteran "Lady Icers" of Penn State went undefeated, wrapping up a win in the playoffs and a trip to ACHA nationals.

Eight years later the DVCHC Women's DII has continued its tradition of fast-paced, competitive hockey, growing to two divisions, 13 colleges and over 250 female athletes -- the largest ACHA division in the US. The ACHA women's division has also grown to two divisions and boasts a current registration of 48 teams nationwide.

Together the leagues' partnership represents and promotes the highest level of college sportsmanship, competition, and fun both regionally and nationally, and stands in dedicated service to women's hockey around the world.

In 2000, an 8 year-old named Caitlin passed away after a long fight with cancer.

Her mom, Cheryl, who had brought Caitlin her favorite art supplies every day, now began handing them out to other kids at the hospital who really needed some color, some creativity and a smile.

That kindness has turned into the non-profit, Caitlin's Smiles, which combines art with grins to help dangerously ill and hospitalized children cope with their trauma.

Four of the groups children got together and came up with this years team names. We’re also welcoming 19 volunteers, family members and patients from the group to the game today. They’ll try on pads, meet players, take the ice and more as guests of honor. We’re THRILLED to have them!

If you’d like more information about this organization visit their website http://caitlins-smiles.org.

Please help us welcome our guests of honor: Ashley, Mason, Athenia, Jordan, Amber, Andonia, Patrick, Tara and their families !!!

Fav thing about hockey: When I’m on the ice, all my other daily worries disappear.

Page 11: DVCHC Women's All-Star Program - 2010

I wanted to play, went to the introductory meeting, and went to the first practice. The next weekend, I went home and bought my equipment and have been playing ever since.Fav thing about hockey: The bonds formed with my teammates, on and off the ice. I met some of my best friends thanks to hockey.Good story: Every time I'm with my teammates, there's sure to be laughs. The first time I tried to jump the boards was pretty funny to those around me because I lost steam halfway over and fell back onto the ice, flat on my back. I like to think I've come a long way since then.Movie: Mystery AlaskaMeal: my mom's Shepherd's Pie and my dad's steaks on the grillCan't live without: my family and friendsWon the Lotto: set up college funds for my nephews and niece and donate to the IUP women's team cuz God knows we're broke as a jokeWhen I grow up:: a great wife and mother...everything else is secondaryAdvice to kids: It doesn't matter how skilled you are when you first start. My teammates over the years -- I wouldn't want to share my memories with anyone but you ladies. We've had many wonderful times, on and off the ice, and I'll miss you all quite terribly when I graduate in May.I've Learned Since: My first time on the ice was a rush. I don't remember who we played or how well I did, but I do remember the butterflies before we got on the ice. Important thing I've learned since then is to always keep my feet moving...although that doesn't always happen.Best part of pro ice: I can't think of a better way to finish my senior year...it'll be a great ending to a great journey :)

First into hockey: I grew up skating and always wanted to give playing hockey a shot, but never did. Freshman year, I got a campus email and one of the announcements was for a women's ice hockey team. I called my parents and told them

Good story: On the way back from an away game, we had what we like to refer to as the "highway food fight". It was an hour long food fight between the two vans on the way home from the game. Mustard, cheez whiz, pretzels, ketchup, you name it, it was thrown.

Movie: Remember the TitansMeal: Homemade Mac & CheeseCan't live without: Music Won the Lotto: Buy my dad whatever car he wantsWhen I grow up: Pediatrician or Psychologist

Advice to kids: Listen to your coaches, sharpen your skates often, and don't forget to take off your skate guards...I've done that one before, but most importantly, have fun!

Thank you: My family, friends, team, and coaches! Thanks for all of your support throughout the years! My All Star Season: Our team pretty much made the season, we always had fun and it showed in our overall success for the season.

First into hockey: I grew up going to San Jose Sharks hockey games and from a young age I learned to love the game and everything associated with it. I decided to take lessons when I because it was different and fun. Not many people who grew up in California can say that they played college hockey!

Fav thing about hockey: The intense, fast paced aspect of the game. I like the fact that you can't just walk outside and play ice hockey like you can with football or baseball. It makes it seem more special in a way.

Good story: There are way too many to tell!Movie: Mr. and Mrs. Smith (I know it's cheesy!)Meal: Beef WellingtonCan't live without: MusicWon the Lotto: I would definitely travel and visit both the natural and man-made wonders of the world. It would involve a lot of walking, learning, and eating exotic foods! Then I would go home, buy a car for myself, a house for my parents, and donate the rest.

When I grow up:: I ask myself that every dayAdvice to kids: Start playing! t doesn't matter what age you are just get out there and learn to skate!

Thank you: Thank you to everyone who has supported me from the first hockey class I ever had and now even as I am going to be a part of this new stars game. Thank you parents, family, coaches, teammates, and friends for everything!

I've Learned Since: I think the first ever hockey class I had, I felt both nervous and embarrassed because I was learning to skate with 4 and 5 year olds. I eventually realized from that first class until this day that I have had nothing but support and help from everyone involved in hockey and it has been so rewarding.

Best part of pro ice: Just going out there and having fun with the players from all of the other teams will be a great experience.

starting from nothing, but the coaches and my teammates were so helpful. I loved every minute of it!!Fav thing about hockey: It is the definition of a true sport. You need to be fast, strong, dedicated, and especially a true team player, which is what sports are all about. Good story: In our first practice, I didn't know how to stop yet. Our team was warming up, doing sprints across the ice. When I got to the other side, going as fast as I could to keep up, I ran right into the bench trying to stop myself but almost flipped over the boards instead! I really hoped no one noticed... Movie: Forest GumpMeal: Indian foodCan't live without: oxygen is probably is the biggest oneWon the Lotto: Travel the world! When I grow up: I'll get back to you...Advice to kids: Don't be afraid to just do it! And even though it isn't easy to start, there's no better feeling than when you do something right for the first time. That makes it all totally worth it!Thank you: MY AMAZING TEAM AND COACHES!!!! You guys are the best!I've Learned Since: Besides one practice, my first time playing on the ice was our major tournament in Maine against some of the best teams in the Northeast. In the first game, my coaches sent me out. I couldn't stop, and I wasn't good at skating at all, so I was super terrified! But it was so amazing feeling like a real hockey player! I learned that you aren't going to get any better if you don't take risks. You just have to go for it!Best part of pro ice: As a freshman, I can't wait to see what I might be able to become, watching all the women who started like I did, make it to this level. 56 13

Fav thing about hockey: That feeling you get after a game when you’ve left everything you have on the ice.

Good story: We always practiced in the mornings at 0530 and had to pack everyone into a van. It was always funny cramming too many people in there and then hiding them as we tried to get through the gates back onto campus.

First into hockey: I started watching the Pittsburgh Penguins when I was in 7th grade, and ever since then I wanted to play, but I never had the opportunity until I got to college.

Fav thing about hockey: Getting to be part of a team and having fun playing games against the other colleges.

Good story: We have "team" nights at our captain's apartment everyonce in awhile during the season, and during one of these we watched a hockey skills tape. The guy in the video was on rollerblades on a tennis court with a blue tarp taped to the fence for a backdrop. He would explain a move for 2 or 3 minutes and then he would demonstrate the move. The only problem was he would constantly mess it up, or do the wrong thing. We were all laughing so hard at the video we could barely watch it.

Movie: AcceptedMeal: Grandma's homecooked German mealCan't live without: my ipodWon the Lotto: Travel the worldWhen I grow up: a teacher

Advice to kids: Go for it. The best thing to do is try something new no matter what anyone else says. If its something you love you will pretty much always have fun.

Thanks to my roomies for putting up with my hockey bag in the apartment, and thanks to the whole SRU team for encouraging and sticking with me through the last 2 seasons.

I've Learned Since: My first time on the ice I thought, "what did I get myself into" because I felt so out of place not having played before. The most important thing I've learned is to do what you love no matter what anyone else says.

Best part of pro ice: Thinking about all the pros who came through the arena, and having bench doors that actually close.

Good story: We played our second play-off game at 8am, with 3 hrs of sleep, no coach, lots of players missing and our goalie borrowed equipment from the rink that was so old school and wore rental skates to play forward. We didn't loose in a shut out! It was a miracle.

Fav thing about hockey: I really love the team atmosphere and the speed and excitement of the game.Good story: There was one game we played where we only had 5 skaters and a goalie, so my team had me play out. I guess you probably had to be there to see why that was funny but just as an example, I definitely dropped to my knees out of automatic reaction to stop a puck and had to be pulled over the boards when I was getting off the ice the first few times. I also totally forgot about the whole off sides thing - what can I say? I'm a goalie, we don't usually have that problem!! played ice hockey. I had never really skated in my life (at least with out a death grip on someone's hand) but I said sure why not! I knew I would never get the chance to do this again. So here I am now, three years later and a senior at WCU playing in the New Stars game!Fav thing about hockey: It's fun! Good story: This one time, one of my teammates hid in another girls hockey bag, and when the other girl opened her bag she jumped out - it was funny... There was also the problem of having a Nina, Tina, Dina, and Angelina on the team. Every time someone yelled either of our names we would all look up (our names all end in -ina... get it?!)Movie: The Hangover Meal: Anything my Mommom makes (which usually includes a pound of butter. It is a great sport!Thank you: I would like to say thank you to all my team mates for supporting me in this learning process. I would also like to thank both of my coaches, Keith and Dave for teaching me everything I know!I've Learned Since: My very first time on the ice was a bit scary (since I had never worn hockey skates in my life). The most important thing I have learned since then is that ice skating does not equal roller blading when it comes to stopping...Best part of pro ice: I'll get another chance to play hockey again before I graduate.

Good story: One game our goalie came down with the flu. No one on the team was particularly interested in taking her position, so I volunteered (being the rookie,I wanted to earn myself some brownie points). I could tell everyone thought the game was going to be brutal with me in the goal. As it turned out, I actually did a decent job. big letters said "no experience necessary." My heart jumped, and I immediately contacted the team, and started playing my freshman year and have been playing ever since. I wouldn't trade a minute of my time on the ice or the time spent with my teammates and coaches for anything. Hockey has been such a positive piece of my life that I hope is here to stay.Fav thing about hockey: The pace and the teamwork. Every player plays offense, every player plays defense. When you score a goal it is as if it did not just come off of one player's stick, it came off the stick of every player on the team. Even the bench is an essential part of the momentum that can lead a team to win or lose a game. Good story: When driving down to MD to play Navy, the bus had a radio to help the time pass. Needless to say, it was not a station with our Coach's favorite genre of music. The whole team ended up serenading him with a Taylor Swift song, which somehow almost the whole team knew the lyrics too. Even people who didn't like the song were singing. I still don't think Coach has forgiven us, but it was definitely worth it. You'll travel, meet so many people, make great friends, learn how to be a part of a team, and apply those skills to aspects of your life outside of hockey. Thank you: Thank you to my parents for supporting me, Katie Donohue for helping me start playing in the first place, Kim Lotito for believing in me and doing anything for the team to get us where we are, my Coaches, and my team because without them I wouldn't be where I am. Learned: One word: Wobbly. I could barely move in the pads, let alone worry about holding a stick and controlling a puck. Since then I've learned the most important thing you can do is never give up. If you fall, get back up and get back into it just as hard. Fall again. Get up again. And listen to your more experienced teammates and coach as they guide you through it. Fav thing about hockey: I love hockey because I never feel more alive then when I'm in the net facing shots. The rest of the world disappears and it's just me and the puck. No matter what bad things are happening in my life when I'm in the net, I can forget everything and nothing else matters.. there's no sadness, pain, or stress, only excitement. I am a Pens fan too, but I'll wear a Martin Broduer jersey to add to the fantasy of playing against another team.. you can't imagine how much athleticism it takes to allow a 3 year old to score, but make it look like you tried to make the save! A cute little one was coming in during the shootout and put the put by me as I made a grand looking flop.. just as the puck went over the line the horn blew to signal the end of the camp.
