From the Pastor’s Desk…

I n his message for Lent and Easter 2018, Pope Francis points out that “During the Easter Vigil, we celebrate once more the moving rite of the lighting of the Easter candle. Drawn from the ‘new fire,’ this light will slowly overcome

the darkness and illuminate the liturgical assembly. “May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds,” and enable all of us to relive the experience of the disciples on the way to Emmaus. By listening to God’s Word and drawing nourishment from the Table of the Eucharist, may our hearts be ever more ardent in faith, hope and love.” Let's do as Pope Francis suggests: Let’s allow the new fire of the fresh proclamation of the resurrection to dispel whatever is dark in us and in our community and in our country and in our world. I pray the new fire will enlighten our awareness. May we come to see ourselves as new people, baptized people, washed and cleansed, a holy people, a people to whom the resurrected Jesus says, “Peace.” Let’s bathe in that wonder. Secondly, may this Easter allow us to revivify the experience in our lives of the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus. In that post-resurrection event, Jesus is not recognized by two of His disciples who are walking away. He walks beside them, He listens to them and He teaches them. Finally, when He breaks the bread, they recognize Him. They change their minds, take a 180 degree turn, and go back to the community in Jerusalem and proclaim Jesus alive. Like them, let’s no longer walk away from the power of the resurrection, saying to ourselves and others: We had hoped. No. Let’s renew our willingness to allow Jesus to walk beside us, narrating our lives to Him, allowing Him to open the scriptures to shape our response to our lives. Let’s allow Him to teach us (not the values of our culture) and let’s be loyal to the regular celebration of the Holy Eucharist. These steps will give our lives purpose and mean that we can remain true disciples. In the months ahead, I hope that all of us at St. Joseph will have resurrection joy in our hearts as we begin the Year of Jubilee to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of our parish. The center of that celebration is the joy and hope of the resurrection of Jesus. It is that we celebrate in the sacraments, it is at the center of our community interactions, and it is what makes us a community of missionary disciples. The purpose of the events of the Jubilee, starting at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 15th, is to bring joy to our community and to the broader community. I hope it will be a great success. We REMEMBER... On August 4, 1867 the cornerstone of the first

church was laid and Saint Joseph Church opened in 1868 and was consecrated on September 7,

1879. The first Eldersburg church was consecrated on June 20, 1965 and our present

Church was dedicated on October 14, 1998 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2018.

We celebrated the Marianist Bicentenary which began June 16,

2017 with the reception of the Marianist Pilgrim Icon and concluded on December 7, 2017, with the vigil

of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, with Vespers and Reception: Journeying in faith

with Mary into the Future.

Vacation Bible Camp was held in June 2017, with 112 children enjoying the week of activities. Sign ups for this event will be available on our website in April 2018.

Summer Madness was a week of service and fun when middle and high school students with adult volunteers joined together to provide 1200 hours of community service in Carroll and Howard County and Baltimore City. Please see page 7 for additional information.

The Third Annual Lessons and Carols was held in December with our amazingly talented parishioners.

What Kind of Woman Would Need to Receive Care from a Stephen Minister?

We CELEBRATE...

Youth Ministry With the recent addition of Youth Minister Scott Link to the SJCC Staff, our High School and Middle Youth Groups are growing!

High School Youth Group (aka HSYG 6:11) usually meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month immediately following the Sunday 5 pm Mass (around “6:11” pm). Join us on April 8th for “The Running of the Bulls!” Come and see!

The Edge Middle School Youth Group (MSYG) usually meets on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Youth Center. Here’s what’s coming up:

April 6 – MSYG in the Youth Center at 6:30. Bring a friend! April 20 – MSYG at Players in Westminster (rescheduled from March). See the parish website for REQUIRED sign-up and permission form. May 12 – SJCC MSYG will travel to the awesome, amazing, super-fun “Rise Up” Middle School experience at St. Louis, Clarksville with music, speakers, Mass, food, inflatables, friends, and more. 12:45-9:00 pm. $20 pp. Details, sign-up, and permission form available on the SJCC parish website. We have over fifty prayer intentions in the Prayer Bowl which is brought up at

First Friday Daily Mass and the intentions are prayed over during the

Mass. Friday’s Daily Mass takes place inside the church at 8:30 a.m. The

prayer bowl is located in the Narthex of the church and prayer intentions are removed and burned after the Mass.

LAUNCHING May 15, 2018 Be a Part of the Future of Religious Education for Children, Youth, and Families!

Saint Joseph's is beginning to plan new initiatives in religious education for children, youth, and families. The needs of today's families are different than they were 20, 10, or even 5 years ago. To meet our mission of forming disciples, we must look at new program models and formats. The faith hasn't changed, but the needs have. As St. John Paul II said, "Look to the future with commitment to a New Evangelization, one that is new in its ardor, new in its methods, and new in its expression."

Plan now to participate in the following activities:

An online survey--open to all parishioners, but especially for parents of children and youth--will be open from April 8-24. Information and links will be available in the bulletin and on the parish website.

In-person gatherings for parents of children in Pre-K through Grade 5 (whether you currently participate in the religious education program or not) will be held DURING the regular religious education times on April 22, 23, and 24.

In-person gatherings for parents of children in Grades 6-8 (whether you currently participate in the religious education program or not) will be held DURING the regular religious education times on April 29, 30, and May 1.

Additional information will be available throughout the coming weeks in the bulletin and on the website. Join us!

Parish Pastoral Council

Nomination & Discernment The parish is going to hold nominations for additional members on the Parish Pastoral Council. This year we will again be soliciting nominations, to be followed by a discernment process.

The council is a visioning and planning body of parishioners who foster full participation of the entire parish in the life and mission of the church as lived out in Saint Joseph Catholic Community. In consultation with the Pastor, the Parish Pastoral Council actively listens and identifies the needs and concerns of the people and reviews the parish pastoral plan to respond to these needs. The council also seeks to implement the plan by seeking the involvement of parishioners.

We are in need of parishioners with these qualities:

A desire for spiritual growth in themselves and our parish;

An enthusiasm about the future direction of our parish;

A willingness to inspire and empower others to participate;

Flexibility and openness with people and ideas;

Willingness to use the talents God has provided in the service of the parish.

Nominations will take place on the weekend of APRIL 22 & 23 at all Masses. Parishioners may nominate themselves or others. Those who are interested are invited to attend the Council meeting on Thursday, April 5th at 7:00pm in the Tonry Conference Room of the Parish Center, before the formal discernment process starts. Those who are identified as nominees will be invited to attend the information night in early May. At this session, all nominees will learn about the role of the Parish Pastoral Council. After this evening, all will be asked to reflect and pray on this information and discern whether or not they feel called to this ministry of service and leadership. The following week, a formal discernment night will be held where we will seek the help of the Holy Spirit to decide who should join the Parish Pastoral Council. The new Parish Pastoral Council members will be blessed by the community at a Sunday Mass. Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Our Annual Outreach Programs for Pregnancy Centers Donations through our Lenten almsgiving program: “Baby Bottle Drive.” The weekend of April 7/8, our Knights of Columbus Council #7612 will be collecting your filled baby bottles after all Masses. Your donations will go to local pregnancy centers to provide important services to pregnant women. Please return your bottle, with cash, checks (payable to St. Joseph Catholic Community), or coins. Thank you very much for participating in this important annual outreach. And… also the weekend of April 7/8 we will end our “Spiritual Adoption” program with a Baby Shower. Please consider bringing to our Port-a-Crib in the Cassidy Center a gift for a newborn child. Gift ideas will be in next weekend’s bulletin. RACISM AND THE CHURCH: A CATHOLIC CONVERSATION – APRIL 14, 2018 Please join with other St. Joseph parishioners for a prayerful conversation on the ways in which the Catholic Church can be active in addressing racism and discrimination.
