Once again Kurt Martin went to bat for us Gladstonians and did a

supreme job as mayor. He stepped up and handled a problem and

got it resolved for the betterment of Gladstone this month. A huge

thank you to Kurt for another job well done. Sometimes no one ever

sees work that is done behind the scenes and never a thank you

comes of it. Not this time.

View from the Front Porch First of all, I want to apologize for getting the Gladstone Good

News out a little late this month. As you all know I’m trying to build

homes in Gladstone, but financing needs to fall into place. I have spent

more hours than you would believe going over every financial detail. In

typical Gladstone Good News fashion, this too shall pass and good

things are just around the corner. Just because the trail is tough doesn’t

mean that you are not going to get where you want to go. In fact the

detours make the arriving even sweeter.

I love watermelon and April showed me how to pick the perfect

one at Dan’s Super Market. You also must try the new Sakura

Restaurant, it’s really great. I appreciate it when you guys send in

things. By doing so it really personalizes the Gladstone Good News.

Projects are starting to happen around town and sometimes it just

takes time to get things rolling. I think we should be supportive of these

endeavors because good people want to be here. Good intention have a

way of making other good things happen. A positive attitude can change

the world for the better.

That reminds me of the quote from William E. Gladstone

“Be happy with what you have and are, be generous with

both, and you won’t have to hunt for happiness.”

I recently went to Sakura Japanese Steak House and

Sushi Bar on 203 14th St. Dickinson. The atmosphere

was great and the sushi matched my expectations. I tried

everything including the Japanese beer and found myself

wanting more. The sushi chef was knowledgeable and

made a great presentation. When you go, and I

recommend that you do, order in Japanese. The names

are on the menu. Ordering this way is great fun. Wonderful sushi bar

All the sushi was fantastic

Sakura has many cut rolls to pick from, but

I preferred the Spicy Tuna Hand Roll Beautiful

Lefor

Lefor had an all school reunion in July along with car show,

food, auction and music. The car show had 60 cars that were on

display, some came from as far away as Washington State. I met

several Lefor alumni and they were having a great time. I guess

the next get together will be in five years. Thank you Fran Martin

for the hard work in making the reunion car show a success. I

understand that there were many volunteers that made

everything else work. It really takes the community to put on such

endeavors. Thank you all.

Back in the day, the west end neighborhood included everything west of

the Gladstone Hill. I wonder if you can still call it that - it was the road up from the river that circled east. The bridge was much lower than it is today, and wound between a steep bank to the east and a small hill to the west. There was once a house on that hill, and the foundation was the only thing remaining for quite some time. The current road goes right through where that hill once stood. At the time, there was a ravine and the road curved but if had been a straight shot, you would have run into the NP loading platform, where box cars were unloaded.

Turning west, you would come upon what we used to call the “Green River Road,” because it led to a fork in the Green River, right under the railroad bridge. On the north side of the next hill west was the NP section house which was the only house north of the road. Section bosses moved often, but I think my one of my favorites was the Steiler family. They moved to Hebron but would come back every 4th of July to celebrate on the banks of the Green. One time they took me back to Hebron with them and after spending a few days with them, they put me on the train back to Gladstone. It was my first train ride solo…I think I was in 3rd or 4th grade.

These are my memories as I remember things growing up in Gladstone

This west end neighborhood of ours was amazing. So many friendly

families…so many great memories. Too many names to mention, but I do remember the Femreits. Mr. Femreit was the John Deere dealer and his business was where the fire department is now…and I recall that Grandma Femreit made really good cookies.

In the evenings, my siblings and I would often play games like Rook or flinch with Grandma Neal and Oscar. Oscar’s barn hay mow was such a delightful place. The Booke’s also had a barn with a hay mow…I think a Booke still lives there. Mr. Booke would often let me work with him and that’s how my farming experience began.

Our place was the only building west of the road, just a block south of the Booke’s. We grew so close to our neighbors that all of us kids became like siblings. We spent many hours together and did some really amazing things. There were many big empty lots close by and recreational activities abounded…ball games, tag, you name it…we played it! Not to mention the best sled riding in the winter and the swimming hole on the Heart River!

Yes, the Gladstone of my memory, especially this west end, was a neighborhood – a beautiful neighborhood. A good place for kids to grow up.

The elder Turner went to Fond du Lac while still a young man and engaged in farming, and this was his occupation as long as he lived. He was the father of nine children, six boys and three girls, and all of these are dead but the subject of this article, two of his brothers and two sisters. Two of his sons laid down their lives as a sacrifice for the nation during the Civil war and are reverently remembered by the new generation.

Rollin J. Turner was reared on the parental farm and resided at home until he had passed his eighteenth year. He was a student in the public schools of Fond du Lac, and when he reached the age of seventeen became an apprentice at the apprentice at the trade of joiner and builder. For the next ten years this was his occupation mainly in Wisconsin. And during the latter part of this period he was principally engaged in contracting and building. In the spring of 1882 he came to Gladstone and the following year he put up a store building, in which he opened a general store in 1884. In 1883 he brought his family west and they settled on a homestead one mile south of Gladstone. He has materially increased his holdings and now owns four hundred acres of choice land, one hundred and sixty of which are under high cultivation, the balance of his land being used as a pasture and meadow for a large herd of horses. He has erected a commodious and elegant dwelling house, planted trees and has put up barns and sheds sufficient to meet all demands of rural live in the Northwest. The family residence is nicely situated in a nook between the hills and Heart River. Several fine springs of good water rush out

ROLLIN J. TURNER, a prosperous merchant of Gladstone, Stark County. North Dakota, has been a resident of the state for eighteen years, and is the present efficient postmaster of Gladstone.

Mr. Turner was born July 16, 1850, at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and is a son of John D. and Matilda (Harpan) Turner, natives, respectively, of Ohio and Pennsylvania. His father is dead, but his mother is still living at the venerable age of eighty-four.

Mr. Turner and Miss Mary H. Heathcote were married at Fond du Lac. Wisconsin, December 20, 1871. She was born in New York and was brought to Wisconsin at an early age by her parents, William and Jane M (Wherry) Heathcote, both natives of the Empire state. Her father was an architect, and is still living at an advanced age. Her mother is dead. Mr. and Mrs. Turner are the parents of three children, two of whom, Claude C. and Vivian, are now living. Guy, the first born, died at the age of two years. Mr. Turner was the first assessor of Stark County, and was elected in 1884. He was appointed postmaster by President Harrison in 1887. And has held this position since that time, with the exception of one and one-half years. He was appointed by Governor Fancher a member of the state penitentiary board in 1898 and is still serving the state in that capacity. July 11, 1900, at a state convention held in Grand Forks, he was nominated for the position of commissioner of agriculture and labor and has bright prospect of election. He is a representative Republican and was chairman of the county central committee of his party from 1886 to 1893. In 1894 and 1895 he was a member of the state central committee and is known throughout the state as an active and reliable worker for party interests and an honorable and intelligent gentleman.

Landscape hanging baskets are great for easy splashes of color and

fragrance. I bought these baskets for $7.00 each from Wal-Mart. The flowers

have been blooming like crazy. I water then every two to three days. I check

the top soil to see if it’s moist, and if it’s dry I water. I would not go any longer

than three days especially if it is windy because they can dry out quickly in

windy conditions. Also, I use miracle grow every two weeks which is so easy

to do, takes no more than five minutes.

Add tubing to top of wire basket to protect plants from breaking. If you

want a multi-plant basket then use this type of wire basket with a super moss

liner or something similar. Add two inch plants on the side cutouts as shown.

Use a slow release fertilizer as you add compost mix to the hanging basket.

Trailing plants get planted on lower level and uprights on the top.

Seth Walters Gladstonian of the month

Seth was placed on the President’s

List at DSU this year. He has worked very

hard to make that happen. He told me that

he and his sister and brother were home

schooled. A fact that he is very proud of.

Seth wants to show people that being

home schooled by your parents can work.

He got his GED and took the ACT test

before enrolling at DSU.

Because his father works at DSU,

Seth and his sister both had their tuition

fee waived. Both absolutely have made the

best out of that situation. He will be getting

his degree in art so that he can do graphics

designing. Weight lifting is a hobby or life-

style if you wish, that he really enjoys.

Seth talked at length that he would love to be a personal trainer. Not just a

regular trainer, but also nutrition-based for a well rounded approach. He would like

people to eat healthy and be active. He’s not crazy about fast food and wishes

people, especially unhealthy ones, would stop eating at those places. He feels that

their quality of life is reduced. He wants to make a positive mark on the area and

feels that maybe by doing this he can give back to the community that he loves very

much.

His family moved here sixteen years ago. His family owns 27 acres and Seth

said it was a great place to grow up with lots of things to do. He loves it here.

Leah Walters, Seth’s sister, also made the best

from DSU. She has done very well as a singer, and like

Seth is a very hard worker. Working hard seems to be

a thread that runs in the family. Their father is not

only a preacher but also works at DSU. This is one

family that sure does value the work ethic. No lazy

people in this family!

I asked Seth how graphic design and personal training fit together and he

said I don’t know, maybe I will do graphic design for awhile and then do

training or maybe I will do both. Fair enough answer. I always wondered how

some young people can figure out what they want right away. I’m still trying to

do that at fifty-seven. Seth and family have a head start on many of us mere

mortals.

Seth plans on staying in the area after graduation next year. He said he

was comfortable here and has lots of friends in the area. I got the clear

understanding that being comfortable in your surroundings is very important to

Mr. Walters. He thinks he does his best when he feels that he has family and

friends around. Seth believes that hard work is the way to success and that not

giving one hundred percent is cheating yourself to goals that you deserve.

The next morning Mary arrived at the pub to see that her message was still

on the front door and no Spike was nowhere to be found. The usual morning

crowd schuffled in for coffee and pastry. Everyone that came in that morning

could tell that Mary was very preoccupied and the regulars began to ask one

another what was wrong with Mary today.

Now we all know Mary is always happy go lucky, but this day things seemed

very different. People started to talk about what was wrong with Mary. Dell and

Jim figured that Mary had problems with her new male friend that they had

heard about and that they were sure that they had broke up. Now mind you, she

had neither a new man nor broken up with anyone. At the table behind Jim and

Dell sat Lil and Ernest. They are an older couple that retired just recently and

their favorite pasttime is gossiping about their neighbors and complaining about

the way the town was run. They are always complaining, but never offering any

help to make things better. Today was different. Mary, their waitress for many

years at the pub, was distraught. With gusto and zeal the two seniors began to

formulate reasons why she was so unhappy. Lil began telling Ernest that she had

heard that Mary had no money and couldn’t pay her bills and that Joe the

Gladestone, West Dakota is a town where all the men are handsome

and strong and the women are beautiful and smart. The dogs don’t bark or

bite and every child is an angel.

landlord was about to evict her for non-payment. Well of course this was all

wrong. What she had heard (third hand) was really that Joe the landlord had

watched one of those television shows about court. He was telling Mary about the program, because she missed it she was out looking for Spike. Joe felt obliged

to fill her in on the show she missed.

Back in the corner sat old Mr. Johns, he always brought a treat for Spike his

old buddy. Now Spike was always there and Mr. Johns was very unsettled when

Spike wasn’t there. He sat there and he could hear all the people whispering all

their rumors about what was wrong with Mary, but he didn’t care about talk and

such, he wanted to know where Spike was. “Mary…Mary” said Mr. Johns again

“where is Spike?” As Mary looked over to Mr. Johns she burst into tears and

explained that he disappered yesterday and she could not find him. She was very

distraught about the whole situation. When she finished explaining what

happened, the diners in the Pub realized how foolish they had been to think up

such ridiculous stories without knowing what was really going on.

Well after hearing this from Mary, Mr. Johns jumped up and began to tell

everyone that they needed to finish their meals and start looking for Spike. Mr.

Johns was very respected in town because he always had a clear and fair mind

when it came to things, all kind of things, so when he said let’s get looking

everyone did. “Mary,” said Mr. Johns, “make up some fliers and start posting

them and we will start looking and also get more help….don’t worry” said Mr.

Johns, “we will find Spike don’t you worry.”

Spike awoke the next morning laying on a soft pillow in the living room.

After such an eventful day of wandering, sleep was just what Spike needed. He

had forgotten about the Pub and everything else, it was just another beautiful

day. The Ryan’s had a dachshund named Putze, but she died last year after 16

years with Ryan’s. The Ryan’s had a doggie door put in and Spike went to see if it

still worked and it did. Spike squeezed through the small opening and popped out

into the early morning sunlit backyard.

Spike took off running down the street towards the Hertzen River, jumped

in and swam across the river and over to a large field of grass. He started rolling

and playing in the grass like there was no tomorrow. Now everyone knows that

whippets have hares on their minds all the time. They dream about the chase all

their lives. Well Spike was about to get his dreams answered. Out of the corner of

his eye he saw a hare that was just like in his dreams. He jumped up in

anticipation, and started to quiver and shake. The chase was on. The hare burst

out onto the field as Spike gave chase. The hare zigged and zagged but Spike was

right on his tail. The roll of the landscape and the occasional hole in the ground

made the footing treacherous but neither slowed down. What an incredible race.

After fifteen minutes of all out running, Spike stopped. He was exhausted. The

hare kept going never looking back. Spike watched the hare run off, but he was

happy, very happy. Spike was bred to chase and he finally got to do what he was

best at.

After a long pause…….Spike left the clearing and found the road. He was

walking along the side of the road when a white pickup truck pulled alongside of

him. The door opened and a voice said “come on Spike jump in.” Speaking to

Mary on his phone the voice said “yes Mary I found him. I’ll be at the pub in 20

minutes.” Spike knew the voice of his friend and owner and he was glad to hear

that voice after all that had happened.

Arriving at the Pub everyone that had helped look for Spike was there.

“Now where you been.” “We looked everywhere for you.” “Is he okay?” “Spike

you need a bath!” and on and on went the comments. Spike was home and after

his great adventure, Home Sweet Home was really that…Home

The Pub has really good

chicken wings with BBQ. I think

I’m hooked on ‘em. You can

usually get potato salad with

them, but not always. I have

come to the conclusion that

“T” makes the best wings.

Eye dog”. The bartender says, “I

says in astonishment “They gave

me a Chihuahua?!!.”

I love watermelon, but I never seem to be able to pick out a

good one. I asked April (aka. Watermelon Girl) at Dan’s downtown

to help me pick one out. First, the color green doesn’t matter but

the yellow butter spot does, so pick one that has a good yellow spot.

Second, thump it. The sound should be hollow, if it sounds solid put

it back. Third, compare the weight of equal sized melons. The good

one will be heavier. Watermelon Girl knows how to pick ‘em and

now you do too!
