This is a photo of Honee my

Whippet and constant companion since I

moved to Gladstone. The hat looks pretty

good on her. When I was a kid my folks

were into dog shows. Whippets were the

dog of choice for them and I guess it stuck

because now I too own Whippets. I love to

watch them run, it is really an awesome

sight. If you have a photo of your beloved pet email me a photo. I might just put it

in the newsletter.

Kendall Booke and Jessica Baseflug working on their new home this

weekend. Scraping and painting is always a fun job. Their bank thought it was a

good idea to paint the house before they moved in. I guess the bank guy forgot

that painting in February in Gladstone is really a bad idea. Kendall and Jessica

must be living right, the weather decided it was going to cooperate and be

beautiful this weekend. Thanks guys, I guess we owe the great weekend weather

to you two. Picures were taken February 26,2013

“What is it” The photo on the left side is easily

identifiable in the Gladstone city limits. Some

identification will be hard and some are very

easy. On the back pages of the Gladstone Good

News we will have the answers. Have fun with

these.

“Find the difference”

These two photos have

five things that are

different. If you can’t

find the differences,

look on the back pages

for the answers.

These photos are for everyone who was wondering what the house at the

east end of Main Street is going to look like. In the spring of 2013 we will start

with the installation of the single family home named the Creekside. These

beautiful fog frozen trees will remain on the property located on Cemetery road.

A webcam will be working when construction begins this year.

www.GladstoneNorthDakota.com…be sure to check out the webcam.

This is the model that we are going to build

on Metzger. This home will have a finished basement,

fence and landscape. A 24’x 24’ garage is also

included. Three bedrooms, three bathrooms, wrap

around patio included in this beautiful 1250sq.ft

Featured Gladstonian of the Month

Linda Wanner a 47 year resident of Gladstone

In this issue we are visiting with Linda Wanner. Linda lives a very simple life,

but a very fulfilling life. She loves her family, her home and fishing. Contentment

comes in many forms and Linda exudes contentment here in her kitchen. She was

born and raised here in North Dakota. Her great grandparents and her

grandmother, who was 13 years old at the time, took a very different path to

happiness. They left Russia in search of a new life here. Russia was a difficult place

to live in, at the time of the Bolshevik uprising. Since her ancestors moved here,

almost all of her family, a very large family, has stayed here in North Dakota. It is

so fascinating that her great grandparents and grandmother Veronica had to

endure such turmoil and left Russia, traveling half way around the world ending

up in North Dakota so that Linda’s family could have such a happy and contented

life now.

Linda and her

husband Joe are serious

home bodies and are

happiest with family or at

home. But there is a wild

side to Linda Wanner;

venturing out from their

comfort zone of Gladstone,

they have been found

fishing at Lake Sakakawea

where they have a cabin. Did I mention fishing? She is crazy about fishing; it’s

what makes her happy. Fishing pole in one hand and the other arm wrapped

around a beloved grandchild is pure heaven. They have a new family member,

four month old Addi their calico kitten. They have a very intelligent little cat there;

this cat knows how to pick a good home. What Addi knows is that Linda is a good

cook that has a beautiful home (which is nice and warm) but also a very loving home.

What a smart cat.

This is her

grandmother’s house.

The house belonged to

the Briquet plant

where both Joe and

her grandfather

worked. The rent was

$ 10.00 a month. She

and Joe got married in

1966. They moved

into a house that had

an outhouse. No indoor toilet, they must have really been in love…but they did

have a drain pipe from the sink that empted in the yard. Good thing they did

because she lost her wedding ring down the drain washing dishes one day… she

ran outside to the end of the pipe and there was the wedding ring… whewww!!!…

that was a close call.

Family is very

important to Linda so I

wanted to put this photo of

her grandparents in front of

their Gladstone home in the

newsletter. I doubt that you

will ever be able to get the

Wanners to leave there

beautiful red painted house

with a new metal roof. I was

told before I met Joe and

Linda that they were

wonderful, nice people: they were right. It really doesn’t get any better than

that….Thank you guys.

This is a patio that I did for

a friend of mine. I used very

simple materials for his backyard.

The Flagstone is installed with

mortar joints and a mortar base. I

find that the smaller the joint

between flagstones the better it

looks. With the joints done this

way it is easier to hose off and

clean. I love to use the same

element such as brick in a two

dimensional way and then use it in a three dimensional setting by climbing up the

wall. The urn is also a fire pit that looks and works great at night. Adding the art to

the wall makes all the difference, it could also be attached to the house. Finally I

think it is very important to make maximum use of space when designing a very

small space. This bench is a little wider than normal, so that you can layout on it

with a cushion. There is also enough room to put a pot on the bench as well. By

adding a pot it gives area a since of dimension and depth.

This is another flagstone walkway which

has the natural edge on the stone walkway.

You can see the photo above is very modern

looking and the photo to the right is very

traditional. Both pictures look great using the

same material just in a different way. The other

thing to remember is that to break up the space

so that doesn’t seem like a sea of stone, plus it

helps on the cost.

Another very attractive material for a patio or a walk is concrete pavers.

Concrete pavers are very easy to work with. Actually in all walks and patios it is

Page 10: Gladstone Good News - February 2013

Gladstone Good News February 2013

10

the preparation that is the hard part. Setting up and

preparing the area takes 75% of the time and effort. Also,

try to use larger shaped pavers instead of all small ones.

Small pavers are much too busy and it detracts of the

whole picture that you are trying to create.

When picking a style that you are going to use for a

hard surface keep in mind that the style be consistent

with what else you are doing. The end result will look

much better. This photo below I love because it shows

some artistic ideas along with reusing other materials that

cost very little. Remember that saving a couple of dollars doesn’t always translate

in to a great looking job. A landscape design or element should always reflect

what you are all about. Take pride in what you love.

I have designed living spaces for over 30 years. If you want a design

that is different or creative, give me a call. I have always thought that your

living environment should be a place that makes you feel good. I can help

you with landscape, interior design or anything else that you might think of.
