Ok, to all those old timers that always think it’s so funny

to say ”if you want to live where there is a change of seasons,

wait five minutes and you will have your weather change.”

“Forget all the reasons why it won’t work and

believe the one reason why it will.” Unknown

This is hysterical!!! What happened to spring?

Mary Gilbert sent this photo in

of her 10 year old grandson Logan.

He has won five of his six

tournaments and the other was a

second place finish. That is pretty

dang good. Congratulations Logan,

keep having fun okay.

Happy Birthday Logan

Margaret Wieglenda wrote in about angels in her

neighborhood. Margaret and Emil have had their share of

health issues lately, making snow removal very difficult for

them. The snow caused the Wieglenda’s some problems

getting in and out of their house.

Neighbors Vicki Nogoser and Emmy along with

neighbor Tyler Mason reached out with a helping hand to

remove snow for Margaret and Emil. Margaret also said,

“Make sure to thank Denny Enger as well”. Great job guys.

Main street Gladstone North Dakota between 1909 and 1915

I want to thank the Wojahn’s of Gladstone for allowing me to make a copy from their

glass negative. This is an fantastic photo. The city of Gladstone had it’s own band, they are

dressed in their great uniforms. People all dressed up, even the children. I think this was either

a 4th of July celebration parade or maybe a dignitary was in town. What do you think? So far I

have been able to identify Lee Lumber and Machinery, Gladstone Mercantile, General Store,

Bank and Turner Land Co. The American flag is huge. I guess some things never change, it was

very windy that day. Also, in front you can see a man in a driving coat, goggles and driving cap.

If you can shed any light on this amazing photo please contact me…

Sometimes things look just as normal as can be.

Wait a minute, what is under that black plastic that the

red arrow is pointing to? Is that a new snow blower that

has been sitting there all this time waiting to do its work?

The blue arrow is showing that someone shoveled the

snow out by hand. Hmmm…scratching my head…

Sometimes it’s the small stuff that makes you laugh.

Landscape ideas that I will be using in my Gladstone Garden

I love design, anything and everything. Landscape design is one of my

favorites. The wonderful thing about landscape design is that you start with an

idea and as time goes along that idea changes into another new design. This

design concept is a very unique process, which I find fascinating.

On a personal level I have been thinking what a Gladstone ornamental

landscape design might look like.

Deciduous shade trees might be used in a lawn area as the backbone for my

design. Next would be the use of small ornamental flowering trees for color and

contrast. I will use evergreen trees to block either a view that is not wanted or

maybe as a wind screen. The use of shrubs will be very limited because the rate of

flowering, color or contrast might not merit the time it would take to maintain

that shrub. Every element in the design should have more than one function.

These ideas are my basic thoughts to the overall design.

I hope that these ideas will inspire your landscape design. Don’t

forget nothing is perfect, everything has its pluses and minuses.

I often draw inspiration for my design works from art. These two paintings by

Van Gogh show how the combination of grass, trees, pathway and mounding can

work together to create a great garden. The use of straight trunked trees and

contorted trunked trees can define an area, just as color or texture would. I think

that mounding done properly could easily replace shrubbery in the landscape.

The poor economy has had an effect on garden design. I think that a more

natural look is in and the fussy high maintanence landscaping is out. A movement

to use more native type plants that use less water and low upkeep are on the rise.

Carbo ceramics distribution facility in Gladstone

If everything proceeds as they plan, the operation will be done by the end

of the year. They are going to be good neighbors I believe. They also think that

the oil patch is going to continue at a strong clip. They would not be investing

extensive funds in their project if they felt otherwise. Good for Carbo for making

their home in Gladstone. Good things are coming. Thank you city council for

making this happen. I was at the meeting and I will tell you that Kurt and Darcy

are doing a great job on this and making sure Gladstone gets the benefits from

this project. Thanks guys, job well done.

This is a blown up

part of the 1909

Photograph on page 10.

OK history buffs can you

figure out what this man

is doing from this

photograph? Hint, it’s not

Halloween.

This letter envelope from Gladstone 1886 was

before North Dakota was a state. It looks like

Gladstone stamped the letter front and back when

it was received. I found out that this letter was

mailed from Texas. Also, I believe that Dr. Riddell

moved to South Dakota. Not sure on that part. Any

one knows about this person, drop me a line.

“Never forget that the purpose for which a man lives is the

improvement of the man himself, so that he may go out of this

world having, in his great sphere or his small one, done some

little good for his fellow creatures and labored a little to

diminish the sin and sorrow that are in the world.”

Gladstone around 1919 Current City Hall

William E. Gladstone

Gladstone had many political wins

and some glaring loses in his sixty years as a

politician. He stood for the common mans

rights, but failed to acknowledge suffrage for

women. He believed in home rule for Ireland,

but did nothing to stop slavery. He spoke

against the aggression of the Ottoman Empire,

but did nothing to stop colonization of India.

Like all people, he did some great things and

some bad things, with lots in the middle.

Monuments remain and towns are named

after you for the good work that you have

done.

Ideas for the new ball fields and park on the west end of Main Street

This is just thoughts and ideas for this area. Listed below are some considerations on the layout.

This is just a few items that was considered for the idea plans

1. It is recommended to have a north to northeast direction from home plate.

2. 300 ft. is the most adaptable size field to have, which these are.

3. Trees to west for shade and wind protection. Trees are also located in areas to give shade to

particular use areas.

4. Provide some onsite parking , but not too much so that the limited space would be consumed by

parking.

5. Provide a skate park in a protected part of the park away from Main Street.

6. Provide restrooms in area that would also be monitored.

7. Six 30ft. by 30ft. covered and paved seating area and bbq. Metal roofing to match shop roof.

8. Shop for park maintenance which would be fenced. Also this would provide storage for park

materials in save enclosed area.

9. Provide two play ground areas close to covered shelter spaces for parents.

10. Trees to east side act as buffering for homes on east side of park

11. This is a very clean, low maintenance layout, but also includes multiple use items.

Mars Cast for this play…Wow, you were fantastic! You have shown

me the light. Plays can be really fun and enjoyable. I hope that guys

like me will take the opportunity to see just how talented you are. I

don’t think any more could be said, the acting was wonderful. Thank

you. Gladstonians do yourselves a favor and go to one of these

plays… they are really good.

Great quote from Robin Reynolds. It seemed like every Sunday

we would get snow and I would have to cancel my sculpture lessons.

We started talking about how crazy the weather had been. On the one

hand we need the moisture very much for the farmers, on the other

hand we are ready for springtime. “There is always a silver lining, it’s

just a pain in the ass for the pessimist” said, Robin”So I guess you can

pick which one you want to be.”

Adam Arend Gladstonian of the month

Skype is a great new technology that is changing the world as we know it.

Adam’s friend from Michigan had been Skyping her friend in Moscow, and this

friend in Moscow was friends with Adam’s future wife Olga. To make a long story

short, Adam and Olga became friends on Skype, and after a period of time, they

decided to meet in person. They are no married and have a daughter named

Nicolette. This story just goes to show how we are really connected to the world

like we never have been before.

Adam is a contractor who learned his craft in Michigan from his dad

starting at the young age of twelve. He was used to doing million dollar homes

with his dad up in Lake Superior. Like everywhere else in the country, their market

collapsed. Adam has started doing simple things like garages, patios, decks and

driveways, which is just fine by him. Many people said, hire a more guys and more

crews, but Adam’s answer is no. I’m doing just fine the way I’m going right now.

Good for you Adam, many of us have come to the same conclusion. After losing

everything, he decided to make a change and came to North Dakota, where he is

now doing very well.

Adam, his

wife Olga and

daughter Nicole

moved here from

Belfield. Adam has

been working on

house building since

he was twelve years

old. He learned the

trade from his father

up in northern

Michigan.

When things like this happen, many people reevaluate what is important in

life and Adam is not an exception to this rule. He cherishes his family and family

life more than ever. Maybe that is the lesson in all these types of stories, getting

back to the connection of your family. He does have an adorable daughter.

Belfield used to be home, “but that town has become about mobile homes

and some undesirable things” said Adam. The land around Gladstone and the

Heart River is much nicer. We like it here very much.

Adam and Olga are really nice and friendly people. They plan on staying

here in Gladstone. They are renting now, but have bought a lot very close by.

They like to travel and have been to Paris which they liked very much. Adam even

spent a month in London. Olga will be going to Moscow for a family visit this year,

so that the family can meet little Nicolette. Adam’s sister is in France now, but will

be going to get her PhD in Berlin. I think as time goes on, this couple will be

traveling often. They believe that the world is open to them to experience and to

enjoy.

Adam mentioned that he has a job jack hammering during

the first week of May. Oh how fun! Adam learned every phase of

construction early on in life. He is not afraid to get dirty and get right

into things. In fact, the day we met he had drywall mud on his

clothes. When he was younger, his dad put him in charge of very

expensive and important jobs that were not easy and had tons of

details. He learned by being thrown in the fire, now it is paying

dividends for him. Good going Adam.

Bob takes a bite of his cheeseburger, “wow” says Bob, “that’s a great

cheeseburger.” “Well thank you Bob, I’m glad someone appreciates what I do

around this place.” Bob perks up all of a sudden, it’s not like Mary ever to be

complaining. “You ok Mary?” Bob says sincerely. “Well no Bob I’m not ok”….then

there was a long pause…followed by another pause and a long sigh. “Bob” says,

Mary, “I have known you for a very long time, can I talk to you?” “Of course” says

Bob.

While Mary and Bob are having their in depth conversation, Spike stirs in

the corner of the bar where he is usually asleep on his comfy pillow. Spike is the

fastest couch potato in West Dakota folks say. Most days you can find Spike at the

Gladestone Pub. Turk, who owns the Pub and several other establishments in

Gladestone, is out on business and Mary is taking care of Spike this time. It’s been

said that Spike can understand most human conversation, but that’s just a rumor.

Gladestone, West Dakota

Gladestone is a town where all the men are handsome and strong and the

women are beautiful and smart. The dogs don’t bark or bite and every child is

an angel.

Spike is a seven year old whippet,

way smarter than his years. He was a

Christmas gift to Turk from his sister in

New York. Now everyone knows that

Spike is the real boss, not Turk.

Spike

Spike stretches… arches his back…and then looks over to Mary and hears

Mary say, “I have never done anything like this before, what do you think I should

do?” she looks up to the ceiling hoping for an answer that will ease her mind.

Now Bob is a smart fellow, and he has been around a time or two. He knows Mary

doesn’t want an answer from him, she just wants to talk it out. So Bob slowly

shakes his head up and down, at the same time he rubs his chin with his left hand

and says, “Mary this sounds like a very important decision you have to make,

what do you think?” Bob fills in the one sided conversation with a couple of

“really, I see, and that sounds right” responses.

The conversation continues and Spike can tell that Mary and Bob are too

wrapped up in talk to even notice that he is in the room. He turns towards the

open door and begins to walk out, turning back once more to look at the unaware

Mary. Spike leaves the Pub and enters the bright sunlight of the afternoon.

To be continued

Mary Bob

Mary was born in

Gladestone and has lived

most of her life here,

except for the time she

went to college in

Marckville. She has two

sisters that have since

moved away and started

their own families.
