    NFL would show case the champion of each league playing against

    each other for the undisputed championship of the world. This

    year the Green Bay Packers would be taking on the Kansas City

    Chiefs in Super Bowl I.

    Game Highlights:The Green Bay Packers took an early lead as

    quarterback Bart Starr completed a touchdown pass to WR Max

    McGee to give the packers an early 7-0 lead. McGee had entered

    the game after starting WR Boyd Dowler was injured earlier in

    the contest. The Chiefs responded in the 2nd quarter with a

    touchdown from Curtis McClinton and a field goal late in the

    second quarter. The Packers added another touchdown in the

    quarter to take a 14-10 lead into the half.

    In the second half the Packers dominated the play as they scored21 points off of 2 touchdowns by Pitts and another by McGee.

    McGee ended up being one of the stars of the game catching 4

    looking to prove their dominance and that of their league, the

    NFL. Head coach Vince Lombardi would once again count on MVP

    ready to make another playoff run amid rumours of players and

    coaches leaving at the end of the season.

    The Oakland Raiders were coming into the season after never

    making the playoffs and had a lot to prove in the AFL. Headcoach John Rauch would count on newly acquired quarterback

    Daryle Lamonica from Buffalo to lead his Raiders to their first

    playoff appearance in franchise history. They would also need a

    solid season from their defence if they wanted to compete

    against the other teams in the AFL.

    Packers would win their second straight Super Bowl showing the

    dominance of the NFL over the AFL and it would also be the

    last game for legendary head coach Vince Lombardi who retiredafter this game.

    The Orange Bowl in downtown Miami

    would play host to one of the biggest games in football history,Super Bowl III. This game would feature a battle between the

    NFL's greatest team the Baltimore Colts and the upstart New

    York Jets from the AFL in a game where the Colts were 20

    point favorites to win. The warm weather of Miami would be

    ideal to host Super Bowl 3 as thousands of visitors from around

    the world would travel there to see game.

    Colts were favorites to win both the NFL and Super Bowl

    championship between the AFL and NFL leagues.

    Key players on the Jets roster included QB Joe

    Namath, RB Emerson Boozer, DL John Elliot, OL Dave Herman,

    WR Don Maynard, LB Al Atkinson, and OL Winston Hill.

    The notable players for the Colts included QB Earl Morrall, QB

    Earlier in the week Jets quarterback Joe

    Namath had guaranteed victory for his team over the Baltimore

    Colts in championship game. This was the first time that the

    championship between AFL and NFL would be called the Super

    Bowl. The Jets opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter as RB

    Matt Snell ran for a 4 yard touchdown to give the Jets a 7-0

    lead at the half.

    The Jets continued to roll as Jim Turner kicked 3 field goals inthe second half to take a 16-0 lead over the favored Colts. The

    older and more confident Colts could only score one touchdown

    late in the 4th quarter as they were shocked by the less

    experienced Jets from the American Football League. The Jets

    Baltimore passes in the end zone to prevent any Baltimore

    comeback. Jets QB Namath ran off the field after the game

    waiving his index finger leaving no doubt which team was numberone that season.

    The Most Valuable Player of the 3rd Super Bowl

    was New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath. Namath completed

    17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and directed an offence that

    totaled 337 total offensive yards. His leadership and

    determination helped to lead the Jets to the victory that he

    "guaranteed" earlier in the week.

    The halftime show for this year's game was

    entitled "America Thanks" and featured a performance by Florida

    A&M University.

    Stadium. Residents were busy getting the home of Mardi Gras

    ready as millions of fans from around the world would watch as

    the Kansas City Chiefs who were 13 point favourites would take

    on the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

    tuning into CBS. Jack Buck, Frank Gifford and Pat Summerall

    The Kansas City Chiefs entered the

    the NFL 3rd Place Game to the Dallas Cowboys last season.

    Head coach bud Grant would need a great season from QB Joe

    Kapp and the offence in order to make a playoff run this season.The defense which was led by a strong defensive line including

    Gary Larsen, Jim Marshall, and Alan Page would also need to

    have Pro Bowl seasons to help the Vikings get to the Super

    Bowl.

    The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the game on

    both sides of the ball on route to their first Superbowl

    down field play after play. Their defence also stepped up as they

    recovered a fumbled punt to take a 16-0 lead entering halftime.

    In the third quarter the Vikings tried to respond as Dave Osborn

    ran for a touchdown completing a 10 play 64 yard drive to cut

    the lead to 16-7. However, only 3 minutes later the Chiefs

    responded with a touchdown of their own and their defence did

    not allow another Vikings score as they went on to a 23-7

    victory and Super bowl championship.

    The Most Valuable Player of the 4th Super Bowl

    was Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Len Dawson. He completed

    12 of 17 passes for 142 yards, but his determined drives and

    leadership helped the Chiefs to an upset win. His 46 yard

    touchdown pass to Otis Taylor in the 4th quarter was a game

    clincher as it helped the Chiefs win the last championship game

    played before the merger of the AFL and NFL.

    Half Time Show: The halftime show for this year's game had an

    appropriate them of "Mardi Gras" as it was in New Orleans and

    the featured entertainer was Carol Channing.

    The Dallas lead could not hold up as at the interceptions byBaltimore's Rick Volk and Mike Curtis set up a touchdown and

    game winning kick by Jim O'Brien's with 5 seconds remaining in

    the 4th quarter. This was enough to give the Colts a 16-14

    victory and a championship victory.

    Game MVP:The Most Valuable Player of the 5th Super Bowl was

    Dallas linebacker Chuck Howley as he became the first defensive

    player named as MVP. However, the award was bitter sweet as

    he also became the first player from the losing team named

    MVP. He intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble to win

    the award, but this MVP was not center stage as his team lost

    to the Colts.

    Half Time Show:The halftime show for this year's game featured

    the Florida A&M Band. Florida A&M is out of Tallahassee and it

    has divisions of arts and sciences, education, engineering,

    agriculture, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, business, journalism,

    and graduate studies.

    The The Dallas Cowboys were coming into the season looking to

    avenge a loss at the hands of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl

    5. Tom Landry would be back in his 12th season as their head

    coach and he would count on quarterbacks Roger Staubach and

    Craig Morton to lead the team to a championship.

    Griese, DB Dick Anderson, OL Jim Langer, OL Larry Little, OL

    The Cowboys played a great game on both sides

    of the ball as both the defence and offence played outstanding.

    led at halftime 10-3. Dallas continued their dominance in the

    2nd half as Duane Thomas led a 71-yard drive down the field

    ending in another score and a 17-3 lead. Roger Staubach threw

    for another touchdown in the 4th quarter as he passed 7 yards

    to Mike Ditka for the final touchdown of the game. Dallas won

    with a final score of 24-3 and their first Superbowl

    championship.

    The Most Valuable Player of the 6th Super Bowlwas Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. He completed 12

    of 19 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns leading the

    Cowboys to their first Superbowl victory.

    The halftime show was presented by Jimmy

    Skinner and entitled "A Salute to Louis Armstrong" and it

    featured performances by Ella Fitzgerald, Carol Channing, Al Hirt

    and U.S. Marine Corps Drill Team.

    home on TV as the Miami Dolphins would play the Washington

    Redskins in Super Bowl VII.

    After a crushing defeat to the Dallas

    the 49ers the previous season. Head coach George Allen was in

    his 2nd season as Redskins head coach and he would need a big

    season from starting quarterback Billy Kilmer if they wanted togo further this year.

    The Miami defence played a spectacularly in the

    first half of the game and they allowed the Redskins to make it

    past the 50 yard line only one time and this enabled their

    offence to capitalize on great field position. Miami opened the

    scoring as QB Bob Griese threw an 18 yard pass to Howard Tilley

    to take a 7-0 lead. Later in the half the Miami defence stepped

    marched down field and Jim Kiick scored on a 1 yard touchdown

    run.

    These two touchdowns would be all that the Dolphins needed to

    clinch their first Super Bowl victory. The Redskins only

    touchdown came with 2:07 remaining in the contest as Mike

    Bass intercepted a pass and ran 49 yards for the score. This was

    too little too late as the Miami defence dominated the game

    allowing the Dolphins to win after scoring only two touchdownswith a final score of 14-7.

    The Most Valuable Player of the 7th Super Bowl

    was Miami Dolphins Safety Jake Scott. Scott became only the

    second defensive player to win a Superbowl MVP award as he had

    Bowl 23 in January of 1989. Residents of Miami had been

    preparing the city for months and Joe Robbie Stadium for

    thousands of visitors and millions viewing on TV around the world

    to watch the San Francisco 49ers play against the Cincinnati

    Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII.

    There were 75,129 people in

    attendance at the 23rd Super bowl game and it is estimated

    that another 81.5 million more football fans watched from their

    homes or other football parties around the world while tuning

    into NBC. The ratings the game for the game on this network

    were 43.5.

    The San Francisco 49ers were ready for

    the 1988-89 season after losing to the Minnesota Vikings the

    previous year in the NFC playoff. Joe Montana and Jerry Rice

    would lead the offence again this year, while the defence was

    lead by Ronnie Lott and Charles Haley. Head coach Bill Walsh was

    nearing the end of his coaching career and wanted to end it with

    a championship.

    The Cincinnati Bengals were coming off of a terrible 4-11 season

    and were hoping to improve their record. However, this would be

    a challenge for QB Boomer Esiason and team as both offence and

    defense would need to step up.

    The first half of the twenty-third Super Bowl

    started slow with each team only scoring 3 points. The 49ers

    had a 41 yard field goal from Mike Cofer in the 1st quarter, but

    the Bengals responded with a field goal of their own in the 2nd

    quarter, a 34 yarder from Jim Breech. This was the first time

    Once the 2nd half started, both teams again traded field goalswithout any TD passes or runs until late third quarter. At

    13:46 Stanford Jennings returned a San Francisco kick off 93

    yards for a touchdown giving Cincinnati their biggest lead of the

    game at 13-6. Joe Montana responded 2 minutes later with a

    TD pass to Jerry Rice tying the game at 13. However, Bengals

    kicker Breech added his 3rd field goal of the day to give them a16-13 lead with only 3:20 remaining in the game. San Francisco

    then completed one of the most impressive drives in game

    history going 92 yards completed by a 10 yard pass from

    Montana to Taylor and a 49ers victory.

    The MVP of the 23rd Super Bowl was

    Adding to his impressive list of NFL

    records he caught 11 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown

    including some key catches in the game winning drive.

    The halftime show this year was titled "Be Bop

    Bamboozled" and featured Florida area dancers and performers

    along with 3-D special effects.

    The average cost for a 30 second commercial during

    the 23rd Superbowl was $675,000. Some of the famous

    miniature bottles of Budweiser play against Bud Light in a
