Narendra Modi, standing centre, takes the oath of office in Delhi.
Narendra Modi, the Hindu nationalist politician who won a landslide victory in
India’s general election this month, has been sworn in as the 15th prime minister
of the world’s largest democracy, in a spectacular ceremony in Delhi.
On a hot and dusty evening, with temperatures reaching 40C but with none ofthe rain that had been forecast, more than 4,000 guests watched Modi and hisministers swear their oaths of office before President Pranab Mukherjee.Thoseassembled on the forecourt of the 340-room President’s residence in the centreof the city included a tea seller from Modi’s home state of Gujarat, the primeminister of Pakistan, several of India’s richest business people, hundreds ofparliamentarians, representatives of various religious communities, the elite ofthe bureaucracy, and Bollywood film stars. They were guarded by 10,000security personnel, Indian media reported. Wearing his trademark long-tailedshirt with a pen clipped into the top pocket of his waistcoat, Modi arrivedshortly after 6pm local time and walked past lancers in white uniforms andblack turbans to sit on a dais alongside his ministers to be.

Fourteen minutes later, with no trace of the emotion he had shown last week whenaddressing parliament, the 63-year-old swore in Hindi to “uphold the sovereigntyand integrity of India … and … do right to all manner of people in accordance withthe constitution and the law, without fear or favour, affection or ill will.”
Fifteen minutes later, a statement was posted on the revamped website of theprime minister’s office, urging Indians to “dream of a strong, developed andinclusive India that actively engages with the global community to strengthenth e c a u s e o f w o r l d p e a c e a n d d e v e l o p m e n t ” .
Modi has already signalled the pace with which he hopes to implementchange, and his timetable over the coming days reflects the sense ofurgency. Directly after the inauguration, Modi was scheduled to attend adinner for regional heads of state including the outgoing Afghan president,Hamid Karzai, and Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka, before heading to7 Race Course Road, the official residence of the prime minister.
The ceremony capped an extraordinary rise from humble origins in a provincialtown in Gujarat, 600 miles from Delhi, through decades as an organiser with ahardline conservative revivalist organisation and then long years behind thescenes in the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), which he now leads. Modi, whoran Gujarat state from 2001 until a few days ago, had only recently been seenas a serious prime ministerial contender, and has long been considered a politicaloutsider. However, his resounding victory in the recent polls and the crushingmajority now commanded by the BJP give Modi huge authority. The Congress

party, which has dominated Indian politics since the country wonindependence from Britain in 1947, has been reduced to a historic low of44 of the 543 seats in the lower house of parliament. The party’s key leaders, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, attended Monday’s ceremony.
Before the ceremony started, Manmohan Singh, the prime minister for adecade of Congress government, walked across the forecourt to greet theBJP senior leaders, who bowed their heads and put their palms together inthe tradit ional sign of respect.Although Modi is a controversial figure, especially overseas, many Indiansare hopeful that he will be able to boost a faltering economy, crackdownon corruption, halt price rises and create jobs. Swapan DasGupta, arightwing commentator, said last week that Modi had “dared to challengeorthodoxy, conventional wisdom and social assumptions”.“If Modi is able to complement his electoral success with a governmentthat unleashes India’s full potential, he will have forged a new Modiconsensus that is more in tune with the 21st century,” DasGupta wrote inOpen, a local news magazine.Critics fear that Modi may exacerbate sectarian cleavages in India andtensions in the region. He has been accused of allowing, or even encouraging, mob violence in Gujarat in 2002. About 1,000 people, mainly Muslims, were killed in rioting that followed an arson attack on a train in which 59Hindu pilgrims died. Modi, who had been appointed Gujarat’s chief ministerthe year before, has denied any wrongdoing.Indian media reported that police fired teargas to break up clashes betweenHindu and Muslims prompted by a car accident in the city of Ahmedabad,Gujarat , on Sunday night.Modi’s decision to invite regional leaders to the ceremony surprised many.Nawaz Sharif, elected prime minister of Pakistan for the third time lastyear, was among eight leaders of the South Asia Association for RegionalCooperation (SAARC) invited to attend. Analysts hailed a bold step tolaunch a policy of regional engagement.
“It’s a great moment – a great opportunity. This is a chance to reach out
to each other. Both governments [of India and Pakistan] have a strong
mandate,” Sharif told NDTV, a local channel.
601-06-2014 Hobby India Fortnightly
The invite had posed a dilemma for Sharif, who leads the conservative pro-
business Pakistan Muslim League, as many in the country and elsewhere in the
Muslim world see Modi as a hardliner who harbours sectarian prejudices.
Sharif was the first premier of Pakistan to be present at an inauguration of an
Indian prime minister. The pair shook hands at the end of the ceremony.
Repeated attempts to improve relations between the two states, whichboth have nuclear arsenals and have fought four wars, have failed, though there have been incremental gains over the last decade. Modiand Sharif will meet on Tuesday. Modi will spend the morning in aseries of conversations with his counterparts from the region.
Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s prime minister, said she could notattend the inauguration due to a commitment to travel to Japan, but sent a representative. Relations with Sri Lanka are alsocomplex, and contentious within India. Senior politicians insouthern India, where there is a substantial population with ethnicand religious links to minority communities in the island state, reacted angrily after President Mahinda Rajapaksa acceptedModi’s invitation. Jayalalithaa Jayaram, the chief minister ofTa mi l Na d u s t a t e , r e f u s ed a n i n v i t e t o t he c e r e m on y.
There was febrile speculation about the composition of Modi’s cabinet.
The incoming prime minister had repeatedly signalled that hewanted to reduce the number of ministers and to group ministriesdealing with related issues to streamline decision-making.
Arun Jaitley, a senior BJP leader deeply involved in the recentelectoral campaign, will be joint finance and defence minister, while Rajnath Singh, president of the BJP and a key supporterof Modi’s prime ministerial candidacy, will be home minister.Several key figures of the BJP appear to have been sidelined.
The new cabinet is about half the size of that of the outgoingCongress government, which had more than 75 ministers.

SOUTH INDIANS NEED NOT WORRY ABOUT QUAKEEXPERTPeople living in the southern part of India need not worry about anearthquake striking the area since they are sitting on a very hard rock.Southern part of India generally cant expect an earthquake because of thehardness of its surface made up of charnockite and khondalite rocks whichhave metamorphosed very much due to the high temperature during theirformation some hundreds of millions of years ago, former professor ofgeology of Andhra University and a noted geologist C. talking about Wednesday nights tremors. Tremors are caused for a verybrief period due to disturbances in the movement of tectonic plates ofearths crust, he explained on Thursday. The plates, under which there is avolcanic activity are always in motion but the plate and their motion isnoticed only when there is an earthquake and tremors. The tremorsoccurred due to an earthquake of six magnitude that occurred at the depthof 10 km. in the Bay of Bengal bed 275 km. south east of Paradip inOdisha around 9.50 a.m. Earthquake’s magnitude is generally around fouror five magnitude and even it is of six magnitude like on Wednesday nightSouthern part of India need not worry. “Even if it is of magnitude eight, people in Southern region need not worry. If it happens on a highermagnitude like eight, this region would not suffer damages like collapse ofhouses and bridges and damage to roads and other structures” Prof.Kasipathi told The Hindu . Unlike Southern part, the Northern part of Indiahas soft rocks and is susceptible to damage due to earthquake.

‘Bring back the glory of
Goumatha’: Experts
Tirupati, May 28 : Experts dealing with the promotion and protection of
‘Goumatha’ (cow) hailing from various states have jointly asserted to bring
back the glory of the divine animal across the country.
They will organise a three-day national conference on cow under the aegis
of Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). On the second day of the brain
storming session on ‘Strengthening of Goshalas and National Conference on
Glory of incredible Indian Cow’ that took place here today, the experts felt
an urgent need to protect the herbivore from extinction.
‘India is a land where cows are being worshipped and believed to be the
embodiment of various deities prescribed in Hindu sacred texts. But
unfortunately today the divine animal is facing the threat of extinction. To
bring back the past glory, a national conference should be organised and the
temple administration of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams(TTD)s which is the
right oganisation to hold this massive programme’, the experts asserted.
They also said that the conference should focus on the importance of
Panchagavya products and their medicinal values. The dairy farmers should
be educated on the importance of unproductive cows and should be
prevented from sending to slaughter house’, they added.

Singapore Airlines’ A380 to start
operations in India
New Delhi, May 30 : Singapore Airlines’ first commercial flight on its
Airbus A380 aircraft in India will begin late Friday evening with operations
starting to Mumbai and New Delhi. The airline will become the first to
operate the world’s largest passenger carrier aircraft to India.
The aircraft is expected to land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport
(IGIA) here at around 8.00 p.m. local time and at Mumbai at around
11.00 p.m. Friday night. The first flight comes after the government in
January 2014 allowed Airbus A380 to fly into the country.
The civil aviation ministry had lifted the ban imposed in 2008 on the ground
that operation of A380s could work against the interest of Indian
passenger carriers. Other major international passenger carriers such as
Emirates and Lufthansa have shown interest in operating A380 aircraft in
India on various international routes. At present only four airports - Delhi,
Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore - have the required infrastructure for
handling A380 operations. The super jumbo can accommodate up to 853
passengers in a single-class configuration and a capacity of 525 passengers
in a three-class configuration.

Julay Leh, as visitors flock to the
cold desert
May 27 : ‘Julay Leh’, the traditional Ladakhi greeting, is onthe tongues of thousands of visitors who are flocking toLeh to escape the summer heat which is baking the rest
of the country this summer season.
Bikers, backpackers and the average holiday makers are experiencing thecold desert region, which is a delight for most of the first timers, as snowcovered mountains in May, sprouting greenery and water bodies that
change colour in the sunlight is a sight unique to the region.
“All kinds of tourists visit Ladakh to experience a very different kind oflandscape, culture, traditions and peaceful surroundings,” Phuntsog
Dorjay, a tour guide and travel industry entrepreneur, told to Press.
“Over the years Ladakh has gained immense popularity amongst tourists
of all age groups, from bikers to backpackers and families on holidays.
The destination has something different to offer to everyone.”
5001-06-2014 Hobby India Fortnightly
Dry and snow covered it may seem, as it was shown in the latest award
winning commercial film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, but come mid-May till the
early period of August the entire region is transformed into a beautiful green
belt. And Ladakh is not as dry as it seems: the 134-km- long Pangong Lake
stretched between India and China at an altitude of 14,270 feet and made
famous by the Aamir Khan starer “Three Idiots” is a star attraction.
Beside Pangong, there are several lakes and the confluence of the Indus and
Zanskar rivers in a gorge which is partly filled with ice is a sight to marvel at.
A cycle ride till the Khardung La Pass, the world’s highest motorable road, is
another adventure that awaits those visiting this region.
Not just the natural beauty of mountains, lakes, streams and rivers, but even
the cultural diversity of the region is another promising aspect that enchants
visitors. The confluence of Ladakhi and Tibetan culture can be seen in
monasteries like Thiksey and Hemis. Monks performing their daily rituals
whose sights, sounds and aromas can be experienced during the early
morning prayers attract not only foreigners but Indian tourists alike.
“Early morning prayers are very popular with tourists who want to see and
experience the daily rituals and life of monks,” says Dorjay. Then there are the
Shanti Stupa, Shey and Leh Palace and other historical buildings which are a
major draw for tourists. And if the search is for some quiet time, away from
the stresses of the modern world brought upon by the ever ringing mobile
phones or the traffic laden roads of downtown Leh, one can take a stroll in
the countryside, which offers unique sights and sounds of birds and local
wildlife. The diversity and numerous attractions and activities that can bepursued here have made travel and tour operator MakeMyTrip to focus onattracting young clients with customised tour options for the region.
5101-06-2014 Hobby India Fortnightly
“Ladakh has grown in popularity over the last few years as an adventure
destination for Indian families,” said Mohit Gupta, chief business officer-
holidays, MakeMyTrip. “We are aiming to reach out and target different
segments of travellers with our customized offerings for young people who
want to do their own bike-hires and just need accommodation and flights,
group bookings for women travellers, families who want recreational facilities
for their kids and smaller groups looking for private vehicles.”
The growing tourist traffic has made airlines add more flights and capacity.

Mobile banking apps a hacker’s
paradise
New York, May 23 : Love fund transfers or bill payments via mobile
banking as you think two-step authentication process is secure? This may
not be the case.
A mobile security expert here has shown how a banking app can be hacked
using free internet tools. To prove the point, Winston Bond from Maryland-
based mobile security firm Arxan Technologies set up a dummy banking app
to demonstrate how the technology can be hacked. As he signed into the
mobile app, the password was automatically revealed on the hacker’s
server.

The server was able to piggyback onto the payment and even transfermoney to the hacker’s account at the same time, Daily Mail reported.
“It is the same process hackers are using to access official banking apps onmobile devices. The hacking technique used is called reverse engineering,”Bond was quoted as saying. Reverse engineering is the process of taking anobject apart to see how it works, either to replicate or improve the object.
It is often used by programmers to find mistakes or errors in code in orderto fix them. According to security experts, to avoid any fraud, keep an eyeon bank statements and report any irregularities.
Also, check in the phone’s settings for any unusual looking processesrunning in the background. Installing anti-virus apps on mobile devices is agood idea.
