Bhubaneswar/Hyderabad, Oct 12 : More than three lakh people

were shifted to safety in coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as

cyclonic storm Phailin advanced steadily to hit the two states

Saturday, packing wind power of up to 220 km an hour that could

cause widespread destruction.

Roaring winds and heavy rains were already lashing both states as thecyclone moved from the Bay of Bengal towards the coast. The Indian

Meteorological Department (IMD) said the “very severe” Phailin now lay

about 310 km south-southeast of Paradip in Odisha and it could hit the land

between 6 and 8 p.m. with wind speeds of 210-220 kmph.

IMD officials said it was likely to retain its intensity six hours after the

landfall. Parts of Odisha and Andhra coasts have received eight to 10 cm

rainfall accompanied by high winds since Friday night. The IMD has

forecast heavy to very heavy rains in coastal Odisha, north coastal Andhra

and isolated heavy rains in West Bengal. The storms would inundate low

Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were on alert for rescue and relief work.

The evacuation of people from low-lying area along the Odisha coast

continued Saturday. Special relief commissioner Pradeep Kumar Mohapatra

told IANS that the wind speed was picking up in several areas. In Ganjam, it

had reached 60-80 kmph and the sea was witnessing high tide.

The cyclone, expected to make landfall in Gopalpur in Ganjam district, is

likely to damage crops and property in the coastal districts of Ganjam,

Gajapati, Khordha, Puri and Jagatsinghpur. Many other districts were also

likely to be affected. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at most places.

Some places may witness extremely heavy falls of about 25 centimeters, the

weather office said. Eighteen fishermen, who went for fishing in the Bay of

Bengal in a trawler over a week ago, were stranded in the sea in Astarangaarea of Puri. The Coast Guard has been told to rescue them, police told

Hyderabad, Oct 13 : Cyclonic storm Phailin, which crossed the south

Odisha coast Saturday night, caused widespread damage to

infrastructure and crops in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh

and claimed one life.

The cyclone, which brought heavy rain and strong winds with speed

reaching up to 200 km an hour, left a trail of destruction in the district

bordering Odisha. There was some impact in Vizianagaram district while

Visakhapatnam district escaped the fury. Commissioner disaster

management T. Radha said one person died in a wall collapse in Srikakulam

district. People in north coastal Andhra heaved a sigh of relief with the

cyclone turning weak and the intensity of rains and winds also coming down

since Sunday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has

withdrawn its cyclone warning for Andhra Pradesh. According to IMD, the

system lay centred near Phulbani in Odisha. It would move northwards and

weaken gradually into a deep depression by Sunday evening.

Seemandhra employees continuestrike over Telangana

Hyderabad, Oct 15 : Over 400,000 government employees in

Seemandhra continued their strike for 64th day Tuesday to oppose

the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh while their leaders decided

to hold another round of talks with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar

Reddy Thursday.

Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers’ (APNGOs) Association president

P. Ashok Babu told reporters here that their future course of action would

depend on what assurance the chief minister would give on keeping the state

united. APNGOs executive and also various joint action committees of the

striking employees would hold their meetings Wednesday to decide on the

issues to be raised during the meeting with the chief minister.

APNGOs leaders had last week held a meeting with the chief minister but it

failed to find a solution. Over 200,000 teachers and employees of state-

owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) had

however called off their strike, restoring some normalcy in Seemandhra

(Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra) after two months. While buses of

APSRTC returned on the roads in all 13 districts, the schools and colleges

will reopen after Dussehra and Eid holidays on Oct 17.

Ashok Babau said the employees were of the view that they should fight till

the end to oppose division of the state. He announced that they would

meet all legislators including those from Telangana to impress upon them the

need to keep the state united for its overall development. “We will also

urge them to oppose Telangana bill when it comes before the stateassembly,” he said. The APNGOs leader demanded that the central

government clarify whether the resolution or bill for state’s division would be

referred to assembly once or twice. He alleged that the central leaderswere giving contradictory statements on the issue. APNGOs will submit a

report to chief secretary in two to three days on the problems the

employees and pensioners would face in the event of the state’s division.

The state will convey the same to group of ministers constituted by the

union cabinet to look into various issues arising out of bifurcation.

Chandrababu Naidu recovering at

Hyderabad hospital

Hyderabad, Oct 14 : Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N.

Chandrababu Naidu, whose six-day fast in Delhi was forcibly ended

Saturday, is recovering from jaundice at a hospital here.

The former Andhra Pradesh chief minister was admitted to Asian Institute of

Gastroenterology Sunday night and doctors conducted various tests on him.

Doctors said Monday Naidu was stable but a decision on treatment of

jaundice would be taken after more tests. They said his vital parameters

were normal. Naidu had last week undertaken an indefinite fast at Andhra

Pradesh Bhavan in the national capital to protest what he called arbitrary

manner in which the Congress decided to bifurcate the state.

Police had forcibly administered Naidu to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,

where he was admitted intravenous fluids. According to doctors, Naidu lost

four kg weight due to the fast. He was suffering from dehydration due to the

fast and also developed jaundice. Telugu film star and Naidu’s brother-in-

law N. Balakrishna was among several TDP leaders who called on him atthe hospital.

‘India not ready for online

exhibition of films’

Chennai, Oct 14 : Telugu composer-turned-filmmaker R.P. Patnaik,

who recently released his English directorial debut “Amy” on

Video-On-Demand (VOD) service in the west, feels Indians will

“abuse” this medium, and therefore, they are not yet ready for it.

Supernatural thriller “Amy” was released Oct 1 on Dish, Blockbuster,

Amazon, Vimeo and several other online film portals.

“We (Indians) are generous enough to share films with others. In the

process, we illegally download or copy films from different sources. This

is why I think we are not yet ready for online exhibition of content. I think

we will abuse it,” Patnaik told IANS. “I wouldn’t mind if someone

pays once and shows the film to a few of his or her friends. But, we

(Indians) want everything free of cost,” he added.

Does that mean westerners don’t abuse this medium? “I’m sure they

might, but VOD is a very lucrative business model there. There are films

exclusively made to be released on it during festive seasons such as

Halloween and Christmas. I was told by my producer that it generates

billions in revenue,” he said.

“In fact, some films make more money on VOD vis-a-vis a theatrical

release. In essence, most of them pay and watch films via this medium,”

said Patnaik, who has earlier directed Telugu films such as “Broker” and

“Friends Book”.

How do you plan to release “Amy” in India?

Page 15: Hobby India Fortnightly=15-10-2013 Issue

“I’m still figuring out different options. I want to have a theatrical releasebecause I want to make it possible for many people to watch it. I don’t think

I will go for online release,” said Patnaik, who has composed music for films

such as “Chitram”, “Nuvvu Nenu” and “Swagatam”.

He believes theatres can’t be held responsible for not screening low budget

films.

“Theatre owners are always blamed for not supporting small films. But, I feel

it’s the audience who should take the blame. I agree small films have limited

theatrical release, but sadly even these few theatres are not able to have 100percent occupancy,” he said. “Audiences are not going to watch these films

at the first place. The occupancy rate is not even a healthy 60 percent. How

do you expect theatres to screen these films for weeks, when the footfall

drops drastically on the second day itself,” he asked.

After two months, buses return on

Seemandhra roads

Hyderabad, Oct 12 : After two long months, buses of state-owned

Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corp (APSRTC) returned on

the roads of Seemandhra Saturday as the employees called off their

strike.

Over 12,000 buses came out of depots in the 13 districts of Seemandhra,

as Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions are together known.

Bus services also resumed between Hyderabad and Seemandhra, providing

much needed relief to people and restoring some normalcy in the region,

witnessing protests for the last two months over the decision to carve out a

separate Telangana state.

The workers called off their strike following talks with Transport MinisterBotsa Satyanarayana, APSRTC managing director A.K. Khan and other

officials Friday night. The government also agreed to consider all service

related demands of the employees. The government had appealed to the

employees to return to work in view of the severe cyclonic threat to the

coastal region and also in view of the puja holidays.

The two-month-long strike caused severe hardships to people in the

sprawling region of over five crore population and also resulted in loss of

over Rs.700 crore to APSRTC.The APSRTC workers along with the other

government employees were on strike since Aug 12 to demand that Andhra

Pradesh should not be split up.

Electricity employees Friday returned to work after a five-day strike while

teachers have also called off their nearly two-month long strike. However,

other government employees have decided to continue the protest till a

clear assurance is provided that the state will not be divided.

from the venue of his fast at Andhra Bhavan even as hundreds of hissupporters tried to stop police from moving him.

He seems to intend to continue his fast as he refused to accept a glucosedrip. The Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting in Delhi discussed a broadoutline of issues on Andhra Pradesh’s against the backdrop of widespreadprotests over the union cabinet’s decision to carve out India’s 29th state.“The GoM discussed the approach and methodology to be adopted by it,”said a home ministry statement. Keeping in mind the large scale protests inSeemandhra (as the coastal Andhra and Rayalseema regions are jointlycalled), the GoM assured the state’s people that all issues and concerns

would be addressed with “fairness and objectivity”.It promised to take the “opinion of stake-holders on all important subjectswhile formulating its recommendations”. According to the home ministrystatement, the GoM will look into various aspects like water sharing, finances, law and order, and formulating a legal framework. Information willalso be sought from the state government on these issues and the process willstart immediately, said officials.

The next meeting of the GoM, on Oct 19, will be a full-fledged one and willdiscuss the bifurcation’s parameters, said officials. Andhra Pradeshsecretariat employees from Seemandhra Friday called off their 38-day-longstrike following talks with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy inHyderabad, saying he assured them the state would remain united as long ashe was the chief minister. Electricity generation and transmission wasrestored after five days as employees returned to work. They had Thursdayagreed to call off their strike in view of the cyclone threat to the state. Thestorm from the Bay of Bengal is expected to hit land by Saturday night.

Over two lakh teachers also “temporarily” called off their strike after talkswith the chief minister. The schools and colleges will reopen on Oct 17 after

Dussehra and Eid holidays. However, over six lakh government employees in

all 13 Seemandhra districts continued their two-month long strike, with their

owned Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) arereportedly willing to end their strike, talks between their leaders and the

chief minister did not take place Friday.

Various sections of employees ended their agitation after the chief minister

assured them that the issue of formation of Telangana would be referred to

state assembly twice, once for its opinion and the second time for voting. He

also assured that all legislators from Seemandhra would ensure the defeat of

the Telangana state bill.

The employees’ leaders said the chief minister quoted Congress generalsecretary Digvijaya Singh as saying that the issue would be referred twice to

the state assembly, after Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s statement that

the bill would be sent to assembly only for its opinion had created confusion

among employees coming forward to call off the strike. Protests continued

in Seemandhra, with employees, students among others taking out rallies

and formed human chains. In Delhi, hospital officials told IANS that

Chandrababu Naidu’s condition is stable.

RML Hospital’s medical superintendent H.K. Kar told IANS that the

former Andhra Pradesh chief minister refused to be administered a glucosedrip but drank water. Efforts were on to persuade him, he added. Earlier in

the day, there was high drama as scores of Delhi Police personnel reached

Andhra Bhavan, where Naidu was on fast since Monday, to air his protest

at the arbitrary manner in which the Congress decided to carve out a

separate Telangana. Seeing the police approach, angry supporters formed

a ring around Naidu, shouting slogans and also vandalising the Bhavan’s

property. A Delhi Police official told IANS that the supporters tried to stop

police but Naidu himself stepped towards the ambulance, present at the

Bhavan since morning. At the hospital, a wheelchair was offered to him buthe walked into the ward, said the officer.

‘RBI to hold rates on highinflation, supply side issues’

The Reserve Bank

of India (RBI) is

likely to maintain

status quo in its

upcoming monetary

policy review,

according to Dun &

Bradstreet India’s

research report.

This is because

inflation is expected to remain at an elevated level on account of pass through

of rupee depreciation and supply side bottlenecks.

In September, headline inflation accelerated to a 7-month high of 6.46 per

cent, while food inflation climbed to 18.40 per cent as against 18.18 per cent

in the previous month. To top it, the rupee depreciated over 20 per cent so

far in this fiscal.

“The pass through of the sharp depreciation of rupee witnessed over the past

few months is now being witnessed as inflation in non-food articles and petrol

inches higher. This along with the price pressures from food articles,

especially vegetables and fruits, pose challenges to the monetary policy

action,” said Arun Singh, senior economist, Dun & Bradstreet India. Non-

abating of inflationary pressures was likely to keep interest rates high as the

RBI is likely to hold policy rate at elevated level.

According to the report, while the good monsoon was expected to provide

some relief, it was only likely to aid in bringing down the prices of cereals.

However, the prices of vegetables, fruits and egg, meat and fish, whichcontinues to stay high is likely to provide upward pressure to inflation, the

report said.

“While the RBI is trying to bring down the short-term interest rates, interestrates in general are likely to remain elevated during the year dampening both

consumption as well as investment demand,” the report added.

Meanwhile, the country’s factory output, which grew at mere 0.6 per cent

in August, is likely to hover in the range of 1.5-2.5 per cent in Sept-13.

“Recovery of IIP seems to be tenuous in the near-term as the moderation in

demand is likely to weigh down heavily on industrial production, which is

already affected by the supply-side issues,” the report said.

Also, the postponement of the withdrawal of the US monetary stimulus and

measures taken by the RBI and the government has provided respite to the

sharp depreciating rupee, rupee is likely to remain under pressure in the

near-term following the development in the global economy, the report said.

Job uncertainty makes people

wary of taking loans, says survey

Though the government has decided to increase the quantum of capital

infusion to encourage banks from lending more to customers, the latter are

refraining from taking fresh loans due to the persistent economicenvironment.

A survey by industry body, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and

Industry of India (Assocham) states that individuals are becoming

increasingly conservative when it comes to taking loans against fixed

deposits, shares, bonds or even spending through credit cards.

Reportedly the government increased the quantum of capital infusion over

the ‘14,000 crore allocated in the current fiscal budget. According to data

provided by the chamber, loans against FDs showed a decline of 1.6%when compared to 20% growth registered between August 2012 and

August 2013. “Firmness in interest rates is also one of the main reasons for

the trend, since the deposit rates have been recently revised upward in thewake of tight liquidity position. Uncertainty resulting from economic

slowdown and discouraging job scenario are also responsible for the

individuals shying away from borrowing against their advances and

deposits,” the chamber said in a statement.

Credit card outstanding have shown a negative growth of 5.2%, Assocham

said. “But the trend is becoming negative as credit card users are refusing

to bite the trap of credit card over dues offers etc,” they added.

However, the chamber says that corporates are facing the liquidityproblems, arising from almost a total drying of the corporate deposit

markets. They added that banks are not too willing to lend to big corporate

houses due to the bloating size of NPAs.

Hindalco office

CBI has recovered Rs 25 crore “unaccounted cash” during its

booked by the agency for alleged corruption in coal block allocation.

A Hindalco spokesperson, however, said he had no information of

any such cash recovery.CBI sources said soon after registering FIR

against former Coal Secretary P C Parakh, Aditya Birla Group

Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and Hindalco Industries for alleged

irregularities in the allocation of Talabira II and III coal block eight

The searches were carried out in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and

floor office of the UCO Bank building here at Parliament Street, the

team found unaccounted cash of Rs 25 crore and incriminatingdocuments.

They said the matter of cash recovery has been referred to Income Taxdepartment for further action. CBI has registered the 14th FIR in the

coal scam in the alleged “undue favours” shown to Birla by the thenCoal Secretary. The sources said the probe is monitored by the SupremeCourt and CBI would be informing the apex court of all thedevelopments that have taken place in its status report to be filed onOctober 25. They said they have strong evidence to buttress theirclaims in connection with the case and the allegations would be probedfurther during their probe in the case.

CBI sources said they have slapped the charges of criminal misconducton the part of the government official and that stands even if there is noquid pro quo. The sources claimed that alleged favours shown to Birla inawarding Talabira II and III resulted in notional loss to the exchequer

which are enough to book Parakh and Birla for criminalconspiracy.Parakh and Hindalco have both refuted the allegations andclaimed no wrong doing was involved in the decision.

partially led by the ultimate scarcity of the hotel accommodation in

2007-08 when accommodation prices rose up to Rs 20,000 a night.

In the present scenario, hospitality industry has projected an increase

in the supply of hotel rooms to meet the rising demand in the coming

three to five years. With the launch of 297-room property at Vittal

Mallya Road by JW Mariott and the proposed opening of 277-room

hotel by big brand Ritz Carlton, the availability of luxury rooms is

expected to increase. JW Mariott has also launched earlier this year

another hotel with 324 rooms capacity, eying at the fast growing

Whitefield in Bangalore.

Discussing the mechanism working behind the spurt in the number of

branded hotels in the city, Saumitra Chaturvedi, food & beverage

manager at Radisson Blu, said: “In fact, the hotel industry find its

business in the popular business centers. Any big brand you name and

you will find its roots and branches in the heart of the businesscenters.

Earlier it was Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida in the northern part of the

country with blooming business. Now the fast growing Bangalore has

caught their attention.”

Chaturvedi, having worked with brands like Taj and Leela in Bangalore

a few years back, said the rising demand of the hotel rooms can be

related to the increasing inflow of tourists to the city as well as the

city being one of the busiest business centers in the country.

Since new areas are being developed here and the city is expanding,

the hotel industry has identified it as a right opportunity to expand its

wings. In a recent interview Amit Samson, general manager of Hotel

Lalit Ashok, Bangalore said that an expected two-fold rise in the

number of hotel rooms in the coming five years may result in a

demand-supply mismatch. According to Samson, while the demand is

rising at an estimated rate of 9 percent, the supply, according to the

plans declared by different brands of hotels will rise at 10 percent.

This would result in the occupancy ratio of the hotels with more of the

rooms remaining vacant and would also be a deciding point for fixing

of room rent, likely nosing down going by the trends of new hotels

coming to the city.

According to one of the estimates, more of the hotel rooms are rented

to business visitors leading to about three fourth of the total rooms.

The tourism has still not reached the desired level of the room

occupancy in Bangalore.

Mukesh, one of the leading booking agent of the city said that thereare two types of earning patterns of the hotels in the city. While hotels

like Lalit Ashok, having 184-room property gets major part of its

Page 32: Hobby India Fortnightly=15-10-2013 Issue

earning by way of renting its banquets and halls for parties and

seminars, there are other hotels which largely depends on room rents

and would certainly be affected with more hotels coming to the city. The demand, on the other hand would be increasing gradually and an

overnight impact cannot be expected. Commenting on the business

trend this year, Mukesh added that the earning from room rent has

slightly on the higher side as compared to the corresponding period of

April to August last year.

The hotel industry, however, is not playing blind. There are projects

which are on hold at present. Zuri Hotels has put on hold to its

ambitious project of 200-room property in Devanahalli (near airport).

One of the sources in the hotel said the reason was the area not being

developed as expected. Another factor becoming the contributing

factor in a sudden spurt in the hotels in Bangalore is, the Centre

Page 33: Hobby India Fortnightly=15-10-2013 Issue

extending the‘Tourist Visa on

foreigners

arriving from 11

countries.

Another hitch

which may hit

the expandingmarket of the

branded hotels would be the finance part. With the economy not going

that good, interest rates going higher, funding being made difficult by

the bankers financing of a hotel project might not turn to be a child’s

play. Unlike the residential segment, where developers get customer

advances, hospitality requires upfront funding and offers no

immediate returns.

Hence, developers are looking at hospitality-specific funds, who can

be strategic partners and not just investors. An example for such

projects is Brigade Hospitality, looking to raise Rs 200-300 crore to

fund an upcoming Holiday Inn in Bangalore and two mid-segment

hotels in Mysore is looking to adopt a similar strategy. Adding a

conformity to the guesses, the US-based hospitality leader Marriott

International opened its Fairfield brand hotel in Bangalore this

Wednesday in the moderate tier segment. This is the first Asia venture

of the group, in association with Samhi Hotels.

The newly opened facility, as a Samhi’s franchisee, Marriott will run

the 148-room hotel in the fast-growing market segment to become a

preferred choice for middle-class customers, as its suites are priced at

Rs 6,500 per day. “With more people entering the middle-class

segment in India, the timing for opening such a hotel is right and themarket is primed for a brand like Fairfield,” a person associated with

Marriott, said.

Apollo Hospitalslaunches BP Clinics at

Hyderabad, H I News Service: 07/

BP Clinics is an initiative aimed at combating the menace of high BP in the

country, with focus on reducing or delaying incidence of blood pressure and

minimising the incidence of complications in those who are already hypertensive,

Sangita Reddy, executive director of Apollo Hospitals Group, said in a release.

“Around Rs 10 crore will be invested in setting up these clinics in the initial

phase, and these will be expanded further after reviewing the outcomes,” she

said, adding initially, the group would be launching these clinics at Apollo Jubilee

Hills and Hyderguda here, followed by Apollo Secunderabad.

These will have a structure comprising advanced BP Clinics located at Apollo’s

hospitals and serve as hubs besides having a series of BP Clinics, Express BP

Clinics and homecare services. These clinics will have advanced diagnostics

infrastructure like periscopes, which can monitor central blood pressure and

check elasticity of blood vessels, and devices for 24 hours BP monitoring.

Speaking on the occasion, BP specialist, Venkata S Ram said only 50 per cent

of the patients with hypertension were aware that they had high BP and among

them only 50 per cent were on treatment and only 50 per cent of these had BP

under control.

“Around 90 million people in our country suffer from hypertension and

approximately $24 billion is incurred annually to take care of high BP patientsin India. It is estimated that around one in every three urbanites and one in four

rural people are afflicted by hypertension in the country,” he added.

Indians can travel to 52 countries

without visaBritish citizens enjoy the widest range of visa-free travel in the world, being

able to visit 173 countries with just a passport, while Indians get visa-free or

visa-on-arrival access in 52 countries.

The UK citizens are at par with those from Finland and Sweden for visa-

free access, according to Henley & Partners Visa Restriction Index.

Nine of the top ten in the index are European Union countries, with the tenth

being the US.

India figures 74th on the list, while Afghanistan comes at the bottom of the

table, with only 28 countries available for entry without visa. Iraqi passport

holders can go to 31 countries while Pakistan and Somalia are tied at the

third from the bottom with 32. According to passport information from the

International Air Transport Association (IATA), 52 countries and territories

provide visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to holders of Indian passports.

Twenty-eight countries and territories are accessible visa-free. Where visa-free access is permitted, such access is not necessarily a right, and admission

may technically be at the discretion of border enforcement officers. Visitors

engaging in activities other than tourism, including unpaid work, may require

a visa or work permit.

Govt looking at easing tourist visa

to garner foreign exchange

New Delhi: Battling rising current account deficit, the government is

looking at ways to encourage tourist inflow particularly from the West to

garner foreign exchange and steps may be taken to ease visa regime.

Taking an initiative in this direction, the Planning Commission has called a joint meeting of Home Ministry, External Affairs Ministry, Tourism Ministry

and National Security Advisor in the first week of October.

During the meeting, the officials would discuss the issues related to tourist

visas and ways to improve access to that for encouraging foreigners to

choose India for holidaying.

“We have called a meeting in October to discuss issues related to tourist

visa for India. We are expecting Tourism Ministry, Planning Commission

Deputy Chairman and other senior officials from concerned ministries toattend the meeting,” Planning Minister Rajeev Shukla told PTI.

The current account deficit is the difference between inflow and outflow of

foreign exchange. During the 2012—13, the CAD was at all time high of

4.8 per cent of GDP or $88.2 billion. The Government proposes to bring it

down to $70 billion or 3.8 per cent of the GDP.

“Tourism Ministry has flagged strict tourist visa regime as impediment in the

growth of foreign visitors in the country which ultimately results is lesser

foreign exchange earnings,” he added.

According to Shukla, the tourism potential of India could not be exploited

due to strict tourist visa regime and the country has everything including

beaches, backwaters, snow, desert and different weathers, which attract

foreign tourists.

Shukla said that restoring India’s foreign missions’ flexibility in granting

tourist visa would further help in attracting more visitors which would result

in bridging CAD.

According to the minister, the officials would also deliberate on increasing

the tourist visa on arrival regime with other countries to boost the sector.

Budapest, the capitalof Hungary, was named after the two cities Buda and Pest were unified into

one in 1873? This awesome European city has plenty of interesting things to

do and see, and luckily, some of the best sites are free! If you’re on a

budget, here are the top things to do during your Budapest holidays:

Check out the churches

Budapest’s churches are awesome examples of the eclectic and impressive

architecture foundin the city. As in most European cities, the ancient

churches are free of charge to visit, though they may ask for a very small

donation once you’re inside. One of the most notable is the Cave Church onGellert Hill near Liberty Bridge. This stunning church, carved into the rough

rocks of Gellert Hill, is a marvellous sight to behold. The chapel walls are

natural rock and there are little chapels and various nooks and crannies that

go with the flow of the naturally curved walls. The acoustics are also pretty

interesting. The Hungarian Paulitemonks keep the Cave Church up and

running for visitors, and it’s definitely a must-see attraction. Take a peek into

other churches of note as you walk through the city, including the famous

Saint Stephen’s Basilica.

Head to Heroes’ Square

Heroes’ Square is the main square in Budapest. The central landmark of the

colonnaded monuments is a 36-metre high column with a statue of archangel

Gabriel perched on top. Construction of The Millennium Monumentbeganduring 1896 - the year of Hungary’s 1,000th anniversary. It’s a lovely spotfor photos and a place to learn a bot about Hungarian history, as themonument has 14 statues of historic figures and is a tribute to the seventribes that foundedthe region.

Climb Castle Hill

Head to the Castle Hill district on the left bank of the Danube for a stepback into Mediaeval times. It’s likely that if you’re anywhere near theDanube, you’ve seen the majestic Buda Castle, also known as the RoyalPalace. This stunningly large structure, perched on a hill, was built in the 14th

century as a residence for Hungarian kings. Today, you can explore thepalace and gardens for free, and the museums inside - like the HungarianNational Gallery - charge a nominal fee. Aside from Buda Castle, make timeto see Fisherman’s Bastion and MatthiasChurch. The bestthing about theCastle Hill district is that cars are not allowed, except for the very fewpeople who live here. You can take public transit here, but one awesomeoption is a walk on the gorgeous Chain Bridge across the Danube. Take awalk on the Chain Bridge at night - another free activity - for beautiful viewsof the city lights at night.

Hangout on Margaret Island

Margaret Island is a 238-acre piece of landin the middle of the DanubeRiver. The city has taken great care to cultivate this gorgeous urban park, sodon’t miss the chance to take a romantic walk or bike ride in this lush oasis. It’s dotted with fountains, monuments and a gorgeously abandonedDominican convent from the 13th to 16th centuries as well asotherMediaeval ruins.

Visit the KerepesiCemetery

This 56-hectare cemetery is one of the largest statue parks in Europe. Manyfamous Hungarians are buried here and the mausoleums are massive. It’s nota creepy place but a very peaceful one. Check out the amazing marblestatues - one of the most notable is the Jozsef Antall Monument. He was the

first Prime Minister of Hungary elected democratically after the fall of Communism, and is a great localhero.

Nightlife

hotspots in

BangkokIf you ask anyone who

knows the region, they’ll likely say that Bangkok has some of the best

nightlife in all of Southeast Asia - maybe even all of Asia. It’s a veritable

nightlife hotspot with clubs, bars and lounges at every turn. Check out the

best of the best during your Bangkok holidays:

For dancing

Head to Glow, an underground nightclub with a massive vodka selection, an

incredible sound system and the most cutting-edge electronic music. This is a

place for people serious about their jams. The dance floor is small but that

doesn’t stop people from crowding in. Ifyou want to escape the crowds, you can head upstairs to the more relaxed balcony area with comfortable

seating. You’ll recognise this club easily at night from the faint neon green

glow escaping its doors.

For bowling

Yes, that’s right - Bangkok even has a nightlife venue that combines bowling,

dance music and libations for a wild time. Head to Major Bowl, located in

ThonglorJ-Avenue Mall, for a cosy, crazy bowling experience. The venue is

quite small so you’ll get to know fellow revellers pretty well. A DJ spins the

latest pop and dance music and the lanes are glow-in-the-dark with neon

bowling balls.

One of the best-known nightlife spots in all of Bangkok is BedSupperclub,a futuristicvenue which hosts international DJs and is often

visited by international celebrities on their Bangkok holidays. It’s also a

popular lounge spot for wealthy Thai citizens, actors and models - in fact,

the club hosts a once a week models night. If you’re wondering where the

club gets its name, you’ll notice when you step inside the comfortable beds

line the walls and are the perfect place for sprawling, meeting new friends

and people-watching while you take a break from dancing.

For a beer

While Bangkok is packed with fast-pacednightspots where the mixed drink is par for the course, beer-lovers aren’t left out here. There are several

excellent pubs and even breweries in the city. One of the best is The

Londoner, a British-style pub, that attracts an international crowd. This

micro-brewery serves up hearty pub fare and some of its very own brews.

It’s located in the Sukhumvitneighbourhood, so you can come here for an

early dinner and beer before heading out to the hopping clubs nearby.

Site offering 360 degree street view

launched

New Delhi, Oct 15 : India’s tourism ministry has launched a website

that provides 360 degree view of popular destinations in five cities,

including Delhi, and lets people tag and review locations, hotels,

monuments, etc., officials said Tuesday.

Wonobo.com is also available in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad andGoa. It will be expanded to 54 cities within a few weeks, officials added.

“The site offers user generated content while offering social media

capabilities and facilitating creation of ‘local communities’ online,” said an

official.

“This initiative aims to empower the tourist by helping him plan his tour. We

have set a target of having one ‘walking tour’ in each state within two

years,” added the official. Genesys International, a Mumbai-based tech firm

which developed the platform jointly with the tourism ministry said it would

have mapped panoramic imagery of thousands of square kilometres andclose to 10 million places of interest across the country.

It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s aSolar Powered Plane!

The team at Solar Impulse is taking solar power to a whole new level.

According to their website, “Solar Impulse’s ambition is for the world of

exploration and innovation to contribute to the cause of renewable energies,to demonstrate the importance of clean technologies for sustainabledevelopment; and to place dreams and emotions back at the heart of scientific adventure.” Launched in 2003, it completed the world’s first

solar26-hour day and night flight in 2010.

This year Solar Impulse will be attempting the celebrated coast-to-coast

flight of the United States, West to East. On Saturday, May 4th the team

completed the first leg of their Across America tour, taking off in San

Francisco and landing safely in Phoenix. During the flight Bertrand

Piccard, the solar plane’s pilot, heard an aircraft asking the Air Traffic

Controller (ATC) about Solar Impulse and why he had to remain at a

distance. The ATC replied, “Just think of a flying electric car!” cracking

Bertrand into a hearty laugh.

A deep-blue array of 12,000 silicon solar cells stretches across the morethan 60-meter wingspan, which is nearly as long as a Boeing 747’s. At

1,600 kilograms, the airplane weighs less than a compact car. The

electricity-producing solar cells themselves are only 135 microns thick—the width

of a human hair—yet they can convert more than 20 percent of the incoming

sunlight into electricity, and more than enough for takeoff, powered flight and a

daily recharge of the batteries that keep the plane aloft through the night.

Takeoff requires 10 horsepower from each of four electric engines, which issupplied by the solar cells and pre-charged lithium ion batteries [90kWh].The engines are quickly throttled back to seven horsepower to climb and

then as little as 2.5 horsepower per engine is required at cruising altitudewhere the plane flies at roughly 80 kilometers per hour. The plane climbs to9,000 meters by mid-afternoon when the sun shines most abundantly andthen, to conserve power, slowly descends to 1,500 meters over the course of the evening where it flies on battery power until the next sunrise, when thecycle repeats anew. “In order to stay airborne until the next sunrise it has tobe that big and that light,” Piccard explains. “We have calculated what weneed in terms of energy, so that

gave us the surface and it gave us the wingloading.”

You can keep up with the team’s journey by clicking and you can

watchanumber of great videos by clicking While Solar Impulse’s storydisplays some highly innovative successes, they are not the only pioneers of solar powered transport.

Naldhera: Golf, Nordic resort andmuch more

Chandigarh, : Staying in a boutique mountain resort built in Nordic

design with pinewood logs from Finland, playing golf on a 2,200-

metre high course with towering cedar trees as the backdrop, breathtaking views of the Himalayas and mingling with simple hil

folks. And all this packaged into one makes for a refreshing holiday.

Naldhera, one of the highest 18-hole courses in the world, would charm any

avid golfer given the completely different terrain that it offers for golf. The

lush green course, spread over the hill slopes, is a delight to watch and play.

The golf course was a favourite spot of British viceroy Lord Curzon, who

was so in awe of the beauty of the place that he named his third and

youngest daughter Lady Alexandra Naldhera (1904-1995).

Located 22 km from Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla, Naldhera may seem

to be a laid-back destination but it packs quite a punch. Naldhera is locatedclose to the sulphur hot-springs at Tattapani, 23 km away, along the Sutlej

river. River-rafting can also be done at Tattapani.

“The beauty of Naldhera is that everything here is raw nature. Youcannot get closer to nature than this,” Amish Sud, a young

entrepreneur and owner of the Nordic-style resort, The Chalets, told.

The Chalets, which opened its doors in 2002, is itself an experience.

“We imported the pinewood from Oulu town in Finland and created

this (resort). No trees were cut while the cottages came up. Each

cottage and apartment offers a breath-taking view. All cottages have

their own balconies and private gardens and a working fireplace,”

said Sud, a perfect host. The storybook resort offers forest and

nature walks, horse-riding, golf, a solar-heated indoor swimmingpool, recreation activities like table tennis, badminton, golf putting

and indoor games. It even has a small revolving restaurant, offering

360-degree views of the Himalayas, a well-equipped conference hall

for about 75 people, a spa and outdoor sitting arrangements. The

resort has nearly 300 varieties of flowers and plants.

“On a clear night, the stars are a delight to watch through the

towering Deodhar trees around the resort,” said tourist Harinder Singh.

Each cottage has been given a different name by Shimla-based author

and historian Raja Bhasin. One of the cottages has been named the

‘Sir Henry Collet Chalet’ after a famous British botanist and armyofficer who authored the book ‘Simla Simlensis’, a handbook on

flowering plants of Shimla and its neighbourhood. Just two kilometres

away from the resort is a tiny village, Kogi, which showcases heritage

house architecture of the hills. “The simple life of the village and its

said tourist Ritika Chopra, who was visiting the village. At the golf

course, which is managed by Himachal Tourism, a bright sunny day or

even clouds hovering in the vicinity, offer a different experience.

“We get golfers from all over the country and abroad. Playing here is a

completely different experience from all golf courses,” its caretaker,Pratap Singh Verma, told IANS. Apart from the peak season, playing golf

at Naldhera gives the feeling of playing on your own private course.

Getting there:

* Naldhera is 430 km from New Delhi, 165 km from Chandigarh and 22

km from Shimla. The drive from Shimla takes about one hour.

* The Chalets resort is located in Durgapur village, 300 metres ahead of

the Naldhera golf course.

* The tariff ranges from Rs.8,000 (room) to Rs.36,000 (cottage with 4
