Congratulations to Tristan Holloway and Nicole van der Kolff for becoming the 5th and the 6th recipients of the coveted Laureus Award at Brackenfell High School. To achieve this award, a learner must excel at and receive full colours in 3 of the 4 different categories, namely Academics, Sport, Culture and Leadership. Though many learners would love to obtain this exceptional award, only a very select few learners achieve it. We are proud of Tristan and Nicole for their superb achievement.

UIT DIE KANTOORWe have made it to the end of yet another busy but successful term. As usual, our students excelled in many different areas.

’n Besondere hoogtepunt is dat ons hierdie kwartaal aan twee van ons leerders die Laureus-toekenning kon oorhandig. Nicole van der Kolff en Tristan Holloway dra nou die gesogte Rooi Baadjie.

We also honoured our top academic achievers at the Top Gold function. We are proud of what these students have achieved!

Een van ons dogters, Simoné Smit, het deurgedring tot die finaal van die Nasionale Toneelspelkompetisie. Hierdie is geen geringe prestasie nie! Ons is ook baie trots op Michaela Müller wat by die Africa Talent-kompetisie SA-kleure in klassieke kitaar verwerf het.

The School Choir had a busy term with great feedback and results from the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod, Stellenbosch Eisteddfod and the ATKV Applous competition.

Tydens die Aprilvakansie het ons eerste spanne aan die K2-toernooi in Oudtshoorn deelgeneem. Ons sê veral geluk aan ons hokkie- en netbalspelers wat hier puik presteer het. Die netbaldogters het ook op provinsiale vlak uitgeblink. Vyf spelers is in die Wes-Kaap span opgeneem.

Jayson Weber and Kayla Smit did our school and country proud by obtaining gold in respectively the 400 m and hammer throw at the CAA Southern Region African Championship. We believe the future looks bright for these two athletes.

Die skuts het ook nie die kwartaal lyf weggesteek nie. Marx Meyer is vir die Proteaspan gekies vir swartkruitskiet. Hy gaan in Augustus in Oostenryk deelneem. Samantha Alexander is in ’n dubbelbladartikel in die Junie 2018-uitgawe van die OnTarget-tydskrif vereer. Vroeër in 2018 het twee ander skuts, Nicky-Leeze de Wet en Stephan Fourie, die Magnum-tydskrif gehaal.

The ATKV-Handevat Project, in co-ordination with the Pioneer School Worcester, has gained some good momentum. We have made great progress with the sensory garden and established a suitable play area.

We are currently setting poems and stories written by the learners from the Pioneer School to music.

Die Hoërskool Brackenfell moes ongelukkig ook van drie onderwysers afskeid neem wie se pad by Brackenfell tot ’n einde gekom het. Ons gaan me. Yolande du Toit, me. A Louw en me. Adri Jurgens beslis mis. Ons wens hul egter net die beste toe met wat hul loopbane verder mag inhou.

In the third term we will be trying something new to accommodate the learners and parents of the school. We know that students struggled to cope with the workload of homework and studies during the test series in the past. Therefore, we will be experimenting with the format of a mini exam instead. We are relying on your co-operation in this regard. More information on this will follow later.

Ons moedig ons leerders aan om hierdie vakansie veilig te wees en om goed uit te rus. Die derde kwartaal is altyd ’n marathon met ‘n klomp uitdagings. Dit is ons matrieks se laaste kwartaal en ons glo hul sal die nodige erns aan die dag lê wat hul studies betref.

GO-CARTSOnce again, this was a tremendous success owing to everybody’s support. We raised almost R90 000! A big thank you to our parents, staff and learners. With the help of our sponsors (Quali Cleaning, Britechem, Waltons, Disa, Pixonality and Jackie Pringle’s bracelets) we could reward the winners of the items, as well as other learners, for their contributions. Congratulations to Maryke Schreuder and Angela Oosthuizen who raised the biggest amount of money. Now we can complete the upgrading of our internet system at the school and provide more benches for the learners to relax on during break. We will also plant trees on the school grounds. We are looking forward to even bigger success next year!

Kom ondersteun asseblief ons Brakkies se eerstespan. Oud-Brakkies van ver kan hierdie spesiale wedstryd op televisie volg.

ANNUAL TAALMONUMENT CHOIR FESTIVAL IN PAARL

BRACKENFELL HIGH SCHOOL PARTICIPATED

On 14 April 2018 Brackenfell High School participated in the annual Taalmonument Choir Festival in Paarl. The recital was at the amphitheatre of the monument on Paarlberg. The choir, conducted by Reinhardt Liebenberg and accompanied by Marian Steyl, performed the piece “Deo! Marching to Bethlehem” – Arr. PM Liebergen. It was a lovely evening that will be remembered for a long time. We look forward to next year’s festival.

DISCIPLINE– MR J BENADIE, DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Parents, we ask that you strengthen our hands and that you support us to address these minor problems that can become major headaches if we let them slide.

No “Smart Watches” are allowed in the school, especially not during examinations. This type of watch functions are similar to a cellphone and has its own sim card. Learners are not allowed to wear these watches in the class, during break times or during the normal school hours. These watches are mentioned in the Cellphone Policy of the school and will be considered as such if learners transgress these rules. The office has already dealt with cases where these watches were used by learners to cheat during tests. Learners also ask to leave the class to visit the toilets, but then phone their parents during this time. We kindly request your co-operation.

A friendly reminder: Parents are not allowed to bring forgotten items such as homework, posters, sportswear, etc. to school. This places an enormous burden on our administrative staff and it is not fair to learners whose parents are not available to help them in this way. It also does not teach our learners responsibility.

Problems caused by inconsiderate and/or illegal parking in the vicinity of the school during morning drop off and afternoon pick up are a constant cause of complaints to the school. Parking illegally or inconsiderately not only causes inconvenience to local residents and undermines the school’s efforts to be a good neighbour, but creates road safety issues, including danger to pedestrians crossing the road. To date it is extremely fortunate that no-one has been seriously injured (or worse) as a direct result of such bad parking, but the potential for such an occurrence is ever present. This may mean parking a little further away from the school. Please consider these issues when parking. We ask you DO

NOT stop or park on a pavement or in front of an entrance to a property.

Detention is the only measure we have to address and correct the behaviour of learners who transgress our code of conduct. Please ensure that your child turns up for his/her detention and arrange in advance if there is an emergency or medical reasons for non-attendance. Every learner receives a detention letter well in advance which needs to be shown to you, so that you are aware of your child’s transgression. Please sign this notice and remind your child to hand it in at Saturday detention. Should your child be absent from detention without an excuse, you should please accompany your child the Monday following the missed detention and report to your child’s grade head at 7:45 to discuss this absence and the possibility of a three day in school suspension.

What you see is what you think. The neatness and behaviour of our learners is an important part of the image of our school. Every learner who wears a school uniform, exemplifies Brackenfell High School and contributes to the successful marketing of our school. Those of you who read the most recent Re Vera would have seen a photo on the middle photo page which was purposefully placed to elicit comments.

We kindly request that you have a serious conversation with your child to discourage mixing the neat school uniform with casual wear. Bright orange K-way beanies, pink Blue Bull scarfs, Adidas hoodies, Sponge Bob socks and Barbie blankies are beautiful and colourful, but create an incredibly bad impression if they are worn with our school uniform.

BEKENDE AFRIKAANSE SANGERESBESOEK HAAR ALMA MATER

Die bekende Afrikaanse sangeres, Andriëtte Norman, het haar alma mater, die Hoërskool Brackenfell, waar sy in 2004 gematrikuleer het, besoek. Sy het haar verwonder aan al die veranderinge aan die voorportaal, die personeelkamer en kantoorblokke wat aangebring is. Dit was ook vir haar ‘n spesiale, warm ervaring om haar eie foto op die ALTIORUM MUUR te sien, waar foto’s van oud-Brakkies wat ‘n besonderse prestasie in hul loopbane bereik het, vereer word.

“Andriëtte, jy is ‘n waardige ambassadeur vir die Brakke!”

Andriëtte was ‘n skugter leerder, maar erken dat haar deelname aan die revues, waarvoor Brackenfell so bekend was, die hoogtepunte van haar skoolloopbaan was. Sy het toe al reeds gedroom “om eendag te sing”, maar wou beslis eers ‘n formele beroepsloopbaan vestig en dit het sy gedoen as skoonheidsterapeut. Hierdie loopbaan is egter kortgeknip deur haar prestasie aan die IDOLS-kompetisie waar sy as naaswenner gekroon is. Daarna was daar geen keer aan haar nie.

Reuben Fourie, een van ons huidige matrikulante, het met haar gesels nadat sy o.a. van haar onderwysers in die klas gaan verras het. ‘n Volledige video is deur PINPRO MEDIA saamgestel en kan op Andriëtte se Facebook-blad en ook op die Hoërskool Brackenfell se Facebook-blad gesien word.

Andriëtte het op Vrydag 1 Junie 2018 by die Hoërskool Brackenfell opgetree, waar sy van haar gunstelinge soos “Sewe Oseane”, maar ook enkele nuwe liedjies gesing het.

IMPORTANT MESSAGESIGNING OUT OF LEARNERS

We ask parents to co-operate please. It is necessary for learners to realise the importance of academics. They should not miss so much class time because they say “There is nothing happening in school”. Rest assured that our staff take academics very seriously and work hard each day to complete the huge amount of work.

Letters from parents to ask for their child to sign out must be given to Mr JP van Zyl at the start of the school day. Mr van Zyl will then give them a sign-out form that your child must take to each subject teacher to have it signed. NOBODY may phone a parent later in the day to sign out, since all requests must be handed in at the beginning of the day at Mr Van Zyl’s office.

INTERACTEVERY TERM THE BRACKENFELL HIGH INTERACTORS STRIVE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE AND/OR AN ORGANISATION. THIS TIME, ONCE AGAIN WE WERE SUCCESSFUL.

Annually two Interact members are invited to a leadership camp named RYLA. These two team members are sponsored by the ROTARY club so that learners with limited funds are not excluded from this experience. The camp focuses on the intensive development and promotion of leadership qualities. Every year it is an educational success.

The Interact members also visited the Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre and gave the animals some love, which they (the animals) received in abundance.

The learners of Brackenfell High School were asked to bring a sandwich and fruit to school. The Interactors dropped and distributed the food amongst the day centre clinic’s patients.

The leaders and future leaders of Interact returned from the leadership course filled with motivation and an inspiration to better the lives of the members of the community who need it.

They are indeed living out their motto “Service above self”.

PHILIP LOUBSER RANKED AMOUNG THE TOP 30 LEARNERS

2018 UCT MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Philip Loubser, a Gr. 8 learner, has been ranked among the top 30 learners in his grade in the 2018 UCT Mathematics Competition. In 2017 there were 7399 entries (2413 individuals and 2493 pairs).He was invited to take part in the UCT Invitational Mathematics Challenge on Saturday 12 May. He was one of the top 50 participants in the challenge and was invited to take part in the UCT Mathematics Olympiad on Saturday 19 May. We are very proud of this exceptional performance of placing among the top 50 of all the participants.

We are exceptionally proud of Samantha Alexander, who received her Junior Protea colours again in February 2018 for target shooting. She has been selected to represent South Africa at the Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.

Brakkies skitter by Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd 2018Drie sangers, twee pianiste en die koor van die Hoërskool Brackenfell het tydens die Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd pragtige prestasies behaal.

Sang: James Strydom (Goud en Cum Laude), Nicholas Miso (twee Cum Laude) en Jeandré Groenewald (drie Cum Laude).Pianiste: Cecilia van Zyl en Juandee Zoghby behaal beide Goud Plus vir hul programme.

Die koor sing in twee kategorieë en behaal Silwer Plus vir beide afdelings.

Silwer Plus (75%-80%) Goud (80%-84%) Goud Plus (85% - 89%) en Cum Laude (90%).

BIANCA POOL NEDBANK ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION

Bianca Pool het aan die “Nedbank Essay writing competition” deelgeneem en is een van 25 finaliste. Skole regoor die Wes-Kaap het aan hierdie kompetisie deelgeneem. Dit is voorwaar ‘n uitsonderlike prestasie.

DOELGERIGTE GR 12-EKONOMIE-LEERDERS

INVESTEC “BUSINESS MATTERS”

Doelgerigte gr. 12-Ekonomieleerders het ‘n Investec “Business Matters” aanbieding bygewoon waar wêreldbekende ekonoom, Mike Schussler, verslag gelewer het aangaande ons huidige ekonomiese klimaat. Op 5 Mei het die Hoërskool Brackenfell skoonskip by die Westelike Provinsie 2018 Saice-brugboukompetisie gemaak. Die eerste span het goud behaal met hul brug wat 290 kg kon dra terwyl dit net 263 gram geweeg het. Die tweede span het silwer gewen met hul brug wat 130 kg kon dra. Die eerste span gaan in Augustus aan die Nasionale Brugboukompetisie in Pretoria deelneem.

CHESSWP INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT

Our learners took part in the WP individual tournament and managed to enter 12 players. Unfortunately three of our strong players could not complete the matches due to illness. Kian and Kiara Blows achieved excellent results. Not only did they win their respective age groups but they also won best boy and best girl of the tournament. Sine Mbekweni, Kiara and Kian Blows qualified to represent our school at the Western Cape individual playoffs in Kleinmond. Kian won best boy u/18 (six out of six) and Kiara (five out of six) came third in the Western Cape playoffs. Sine played equally well and won three of her six games, a personal best for the ever-developing Sine. Kian is the current Western Province schools individual chess champion for boys under u/18. He was also the winner of the tournament.

Congratulations on these excellent results. You make us proud.

Hierdie 3 spelers is gekies om deel te neem aan die Inter-Provinsiale Toernooi (IPT’s) en WP Aksie-netbal, waarin hulle die o/15, o/16 en o/17-spanne onderskeidelik verteenwoordig het. Al drie hierdie aksienetbalspelers se WP-spanne het in die finale gespeel en goud verower. Baie geluk Saskia, Chrize en Chloe met julle skitterende oorwinning. Ons is baie trots op julle!SKUTS

TROTS OP ONS SENIOR SKUTS: ADRIAAN DE BEER EN SAMANTHA ALEXANDER

Dit gaan vanjaar weer uitstekend met BRAKKIES SKYFSKIETKLUB. Ons het meer as 30 skuts wat al reeds almal aan kompetisies deelgeneem het en uitstekend presteer het. Hande vol goue-, silwer- en bronsmedaljes is verower. Persoonlike Bestes (PB’s) word verbeter en die beginners vorder pragtig. Hier verskyn al die skuts wat deelgeneem het aan die liga-kompetisie 3.

Ons PRESISIE skuts vaar net so goed en behaal feitlik by elke kompetisie waaraan hulle deelneem, ook goue medaljes. Ons is trots op ons SENIOR SKUTS Adriaan de Beer en Samantha Alexander.

Francois du Toit (graad 12), Manja van Noordwyk (graad 11) en Lian Kuhn (graad 11) is vir die Cape Winelands o.19-span gekies. Hulle gaan vanaf 23 – 30 Junie 2018 in Pretoria aan die SA o.19-kampioenskappe en Interprovinsiale kompetisie deelneem. Ons wens hulle voorspoed toe.

ROLBALWP JUNIOR MASTER ROLBALTOERNOOI

Jaco Fourie, ‘n graad 9-leerder, is genooi om aan die WP Junior Master Rolbaltoernooi deel te neem. Jaco het in die toernooi ‘n silwer medalje verower. Hy het ook gedurende die April-skoolvakansie aan die SA Junior -Rolbalkampioenskappe in Bloemfontein deelgeneem. Hy en sy span het ‘n goue medalje in die o.15-afdeling verower. Baie geluk, Jaco, met jou uitstekende prestasie. Ons is baie trots op jou!

MARTIAL ARTS CAPE CLASSIC- MIX MARTIAL ARTS PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT

Tiaan van As (Grade 8) participated at the Cape Classic Mix Martial Arts provincial tournament in Sunningdale over the weekend.

He won 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal and made the WP A-team for 2018. He has also been crowned the High Kick Champion with a kick of 2.5 meters. Congratulations, Tiaan!
