media is so popular with young people – what is
it that makes it so appealing?
Why Is Social Media Appealing….
• Facebook– Easy to use– Can upload and tag pictures, and see friends pictures– Find friends– Keep in touch with people who don’t live near– Play games
• YouTube– Listen to and watch music tracks and videos– Can see emotions in videos – Can comment on videos– Can upload home videos and stuff from your phone
• Twitter– Look at what the celebrities are doing – gossip– Can contact celebs
Campaigning through Facebook
Save LGYM Campaign
• Strategy to raise awareness of the threat of LGYM being closed– Groups created quickly– Safety features customised to allow for anonymity
• 800 supporters in less than 5 days – Young people can quickly join, invite their friends
family to join. – ‘Snowball’ effect
• Organised a public meeting • Over 100 young people left testimonials and
messages of support, which clearly showed how the group is valued.
Campaigning Through Twitter
Top Tweet tips1. Direct your followers to a website/blog where they can get
more info about your campaign2. Twitter search for people relevant to your campaign and
follow them. Be careful who you follow – tweeters may judge you by who you follow
3. Engage in conversations through @replies, 4. Look for potential people to partner up with who have the
same campaign aims: re-tweet their updates, get them to re-tweet yours etc…
5. Create a #hashtag for your campaign, which will allow your campaign to be easily searched for throughout the whole of twitter
6. Don’t tweet for the sake of an update – keep it relevant, and original, catch peoples eye’s!
7. Be creative – update through pictures, videos, Twitpic and Twitvid will liven up your tweets.
8. Download a desktop client e.g. Tweetdeck. It will bring your newsfeed, @replies and search all into one place
9. To be successful keep in honest and transparent.
