Dear Parents

School Council has approved the introduc/on of a ‘so-shell’ school jacket which can be worn both in and out of

class and on school excursions.

An official school jacket was first discussed in the context of a very cold winter and students wan/ng to wear jackets

in class that were not part of the school uniform.

Samples of the so-shell jackets were taken to the senior student leadership team and they were very enthusias/c

about them and felt that the student body across the school would be equally enthusias/c.

School Council discussed the jackets and they also felt that they made a great addi/on to the school uniform.

There are a number of op/ons regarding the embroidery of a house name and a student’s name so please consider

those prior to placing an order.

The first order will have a closing date of 14th October 2015. With an anticipated return Monday 2nd Novem-ber.

The second order will be in 2016 with a closing date of 2nd March

Graeme Good—Principal

VCE Systems Engineering: Tales from the “Man-Cave”

Part 1: Mason Fagan: Air Hockey Table with Automac Scoring

As part of VCE Systems Engineering, Unit 3/4 students had the opportunity to design and construct a device that includes me-chanical and electronic systems. At the end of Term 3, over hundred students and staff visited the Systems Engineering Room (Old Metal Work Room – aka “Man-Cave”) and vote for their favourite project. All five submitted projects received votes but the people’s choice by a small margin was Mason Fagan’s project. Most people are familiar with the air hock-ey game. A small puck effortlessly glides on a surface due to air being forced through many holes in the surface. The aim is to get the puck in to the opponents end goal. After exten-sive research and testing, Mason was able to design an air hockey table with an automatic scoring sys-tem. As the puck enters the opponent’s goals, it breaks a light beam that activates an electronic scoring system incrementing the digital scoreboard by one. The electronics was designed and tested on a computer simulation program before it was built. The system worked on the computer but not when it was actually built. Two little changes were made to solve the problem. The addition of the light gates provided the means to detect a puck in the end goal. The major task was the design and construction of the table itself. Mason initially pulled apart a vacuum cleaner to see if it could be used as the air source. It proved unsatisfactory so an electric leaf blower was sourced. The table is much more complex than a box. Mason had to hand drill over 4000 holes in the top. There is a holed baffle inside the table to ensure equal distribution of the air over the entire ta-ble. The table then had to be sealed to maximise air flow to the top. A big thank you to Mr Fagan for helping with the construction. From this article and the ones that follow, the key to a successful project is having a parent getting actively involved with the project in some capacity. When it was finally finished in September, testing showed that Mason had successfully built an air hockey table with automatic scor-ing.

Can you help the “Man-Cave”? Over the past two years, many parents, staff and ex-staff have supported Systems Engineering (and Physics) by donating broken small petrol en-gines and both broken and working electrical equipment. The electrical junk boxes that appear on my desk are always appreciated. Some of it goes in to the rubbish bin but there are always items in every donated box that can be used. Items that are always appreciated include power adapters (pictured left), remote control toys and/or controls. We are also interested in any basic hand tools that you no longer have a use for. If you think you have might have something that we could use, please give me a call.

WALK TO SCHOOL MONTH 5TH TO 30TH OCTOBER 2015

Mortlake College will be participating in the Walk to School month

Walk to School month encourages school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school throughout October to build healthy habits for life. Walking to school helps children get the physical activity they need each day to be healthy. Children and their parents are encouraged to start walking to and from school on the first day of term 4, and keep it up each school day throughout October.

Children need 60 minutes of physical activity every day: national guidelines recommend that children aged 5-12 engage in 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day (Australian Gov-ernment Department of Health, 2014)

Parents can find out more and sign their child up online at www.walktoschool.vic.gov.au, or download the free Walk to School app to record each walk in October and be part of the state-wide effort.
