Ulrike Luckmann, JournalistAs a journalist, I have been writing about outdoor

apparel for many years. I am fascinated by the world of technical fibres and functional fabrics

and how quickly they have developed over the last two decades. This development has been

about as fast as the development of computers, which are constantly getting more powerful, fast-er and better. Today there are jackets that weigh

only slightly more than a chocolate bar, but are waterproof and breathable or filled with pure

down, which protects against cold temperatures. An unbelievable amount of technical expertise

goes into outdoor apparel, something that is tru-ly unique in the entire textile apparel industry.

Personally, I would favour a more sensible com-bination of this technical know-how and fashion

considerations, although we are seeing some initial steps in this direction. But as a woman, I would like to see dresses, skirts, accessories and a more diverse selection of cuts and silhouettes which have nothing to do with the typical outdoor uniform of trousers and jackets. I am sure a lot of women would love that.

Andreas Bartmann, Globetrotter

“For us, as one of the leading retailers of outdoor equipment, function continues to be essential, even if all of the brands’ collection have become much more fashionable. Outdoor ap-parel with sporty characteristics is increasingly worn as street fashion in the city. Consumers recognise the added value of these textiles and associate a certain lifestyle with the typ-ically sporty outdoor look, one that they want to integrate into their daily lives. That gives us, as retailers and the indus-try, an opportunity to take the next important step, namely to establish the theme of sustainability in our society. In no other area are customers as critical and considerate of the environmental aspects of clothing as they are in the outdoor sector, and many brands reflect this. The up-and-

coming outdoor trend represents an op-portunity to sensitise a broader group of people to this issue and to bring them closer to our sustainable tech-nologies and long-lived products.”

Martin Wuttke, nextguruNow design and trend agency

For years now we have seen a meteoric development in the outdoor segment. The niche sector has transformed into a booming, global business. Today, “tropical trekking” events in Japan point in the direction that the outdoor market will take in the next few years. The time of functional plaid shirts and urban travellers clad in beige and olive has passed its peak. Hybrid products, especially in the accessories sector, increasingly set the tone. I only need to mention the trend-setting cooperation between Rick Owens and a well-known sports shoe manufac-turer. The sector should use its incredible technical know-how to address new mar-kets and target groups. The generation of “forever youngsters” is drastically increa- sing: the “young oldies” of tomorrow have significantly higher fashion standards than ever before. Offer them innovation and function paired with fashion and lifestyle products, and you are on to a winner. Products such as the “trekking pump”,

a breathable hybrid of feminine kitten heel and deep profile cushioned with air cells, are assured of a golden future: re-think Outdoor!

Mice Man, Fashion Blogger

Outdoor apparel is advancing these days. This market is indefinable by nature, which it is both its strength and its weakness. The sport-nature trend is still on solid ground: an increasingly urban public that aspires to the great outdoors, the multi-tasking generation, rejecting the spirit of competition, but wis-hing to engage in sport when and where they want to. Social media favour the outdoors with video posts of sensational experiences captured by small cameras and drones. The outdoor mentality is well in keeping with the spirit of the times: defending the pla-net, ecology, as well as a desire for freedom and sport with no holds barred. The urban outdoor trend has become a fashion phen-omenon that even the large clothing chains have something to say about, which helps muddy the waters. Additionally, a high-end trend has developed with brands from the urban chic clothing world. However, the products involved are much less expensive than the technical lines. Nonetheless, as in

the past, the future of outdoor will hinge on the technical aspects of the products and fabrics. “City mice and country mice” have started coming to-gether.

Yuri Yosumi, Outdoor Style Creator & Kimono Dresser

For me, when I am outdoors, I experience the spirit of pure FEELING, rather than just DOING. I think being in the outdoors is not only a “sport-ing activity”, but also a heart-moving experience in nature. When nature wakes up my “sense of wonder”, everything around me totally changes. The scenery of my life becomes colourful with lots of joy. I realise I live as one with nature. I am working to promote the world of the out-doors by developing clothing for women. The trekking skirt, which I introduced in Japan, has gained huge popularity. In the mountains or for-est, I feel that I can be my best possible self. To me, being myself in nature is the best way to express my respect for nature. My main job is working as a KIMONO dresser. The colour of a kimono is inspired by colours of nature. Wearing a kimono is also an expression of re-spect for nature.Looking up out of the window at the sky, breathing deeply, eating seasonal foods, wearing a kimono and walking along

a mountain path. For me, all these things are splendid everyday out-door experiences. As I breathe, I “feel na-ture” because I live on this great EARTH.

Rocking itHigh alpine tours, daring expeditions, days

of adventure through rocky landscapes that beg to be discovered. It doesn’t get any bet-

ter than this. Warm rock under your fingers, carabiners jingling on the harness, and noth-

ing but air under your feet. Classic alpinism – this is the world of ropes, straps and carabi-

ners. Hands out of pockets and reaching up into the rock, whether on a climbing path, a

marked route or uncharted territory that must be conquered. Mountaineering is pure adven-

ture, has moments of reflection, tranquillity and purity. Seeking paths far removed from

civilisation in as yet untouched nature. Spec-tacular views, open boulder fields, high peaks

and rough rocks, endlessly far away from the hectic pace of daily life. Mountaineering, how-

ever, also involves hard training and risky steps, peaked by ultimate contentment when reach-

ing the top, bathed in sweat and full of euphoria at the sight of timeless beauty.

Alpinism has its own language, its own rules and clearly defined requirements for outdoor

clothing and equipment. The glamorous world of fashion, the hint of perfume of international

catwalks, the tingling fashion ambience of the design hotspots – these all have no place here.

Designers of outdoor clothing seek and find in-spiration in the sport itself. Classic garment

systems, sensible multilayer look, precisely co- ordinated functional qualities that need to com-

plement each other.

Designs and details leave no room for great experiments, preference is given to the tried

and trusted, good aspects are further improved to make them even better. Inspiration comes

from innovative fabrics and fibres, from mate-rials with qualities that make the urban adven-

ture of brave outdoor heroes a whole lot easier. A mountaineer must be able to rely on his gear.

One hundred per cent. It makes his adventure in sometimes unpredictable nature a great deal

For higher regions or in colder climes, the expert plans ahead for colder temperatures and practi-

cal, yet lightweight heat insulation. What years ago was the classic fleece jacket as the second lay-

er has long since given way to super lightweight, thinly padded waistcoats and jackets that easily fit

under any hardshell membrane jacket to keep the body warm. Where not needed, the garment can be

folded to minimal pack size and stored in a bag in-side the backpack. Whether these lightweights have

synthetic fleece or pure down lining inside depends on various factors, including the expected moisture

level they need to withstand.

It’s all about lightnessFabrics must meet extreme demands arising from in-

calculable weather conditions, as there are wind, rain, hail, sudden cold, weight and stress to contend with.

New membranes, much lighter than ever before, are worked into highly functional laminates, 3-layer con-

structions integrate waterproof membranes, are ex-tremely elastic with minimal weight and are all-rounders

for various temperatures and weather situations: water-proof, windproof, breathable. Lightweight fabrics are a

must to feel good, as is a soft and dry feel of the fabrics. Additionally, highly elastic materials with more stretch

than ever before come combined with breathability of up to 30,000 grams per square metre per 24 hours. All are

soft to the touch. A broad range of new softshells, mostly bonded, at times laminated along with looks, touch and

easier, more pleasant and, in extreme sit-uations, may save his health, maybe even

his life.

The styles and silhouettes change only mar-ginally: Mountaineering requires classic jacket

concepts made of wind- and waterproof ma-terials and functional details including hoods

that fit over the helmet worn against rock fall. Details such as drawstrings, adjustable cuffs

and high collars are indispensable against pen-etrating wind and moisture. The designs pro-

vide freedom of movement and stop the jacket from rucking up in simply unpleasant fashion

with each grip into the rock face.

Trousers must be practical and geared exactly to the sporting challenge ahead. Colder temper-

atures require functional alpine trousers with re-movable braces made, for instance, from double-

weave polyester stretch material or softshell with windproof outer. These robust mountaineering

trousers are windproof and elasticated for flexibili-ty in movement. Side zippers for overtrousers help

to get in and out of them with shoes on, anatomi-cally preshaped knee sections add mobility.

function made for summer outdoor sports. First and second layers feature as brushed lightweight

knits in a natural look. Superfine microfibres ex-plore complex weaving techniques with particu-

lar attention to highly diverse textures and grips. Silver coatings generate diffuse reflections, fusing

photographs and diluted drawings of nature´s raw beauty.

Classically elegant coloursThe colour palette features sophisticated vibrant tones

with focus on a variety of blue and turquoise shades. The latter give outdoor clothing an unusual touch of

freshness. The combination with opposites such as bright orange or pure pink is arresting. Combinations

are used discreetly: as zipper, as thin trimming, as collar

insides. Brilliant green shades create a vibrant ten-sion in combination with cool blue variants.

New to the range is the high-contrast combinati-on with a radiant yellow, a deep earthy red and a

strong orange for both men and women. Colour variations come in a perfect balance, lifted by tou-

ches of light chalk pink, purple and aubergine. Au-bergine is a very important tone that provides un-

usual effects and creates depth. It seldomly comes alone, but loves the freshness of bright and colour-

ful opposites.

Walking on sunshine in City Life & Travel

City Life & Travel is arguably the trendiest theme of the Outdoor collections. Comfort-

able sportswear, cool styles and a diversity of designs and details. Some playful, some

somber or casual. The silhouettes remind only vaguely of the performance wear of

mountaineers and hikers, are generally softer, trendier. Inspiration for the City Life & Trav-

el trend is drawn from diverse sources and is subject more to the laws of fashion than those

of the outdoors. It is defined by visionary globe-trotters, a hint of adventure and discovery, but

always paired with a touch of fashion from the international catwalks and the practical aspects

of the sporty functions that once more play an invisible role here.

It is everyday wear and everyday accessories for everyday life. The freedom of nature com-

bined with summer in the city. Outdoor look with a touch of fashion is commonplace in the

city. People in the streets, individuals ambling through the park, kids on the way to school.

Urban life is parkour and slacklining, biking and skateboarding between buildings, in the street

or in a park.Well equipped, yet not functionally overdressed,

when caught off guard by a rain shower, when braving the elements while out shopping, or if

need be to slip the coat over the jacket on the way to work. Apparel that is equally ideal for the

daily journey to work for millions of city cyclists, when out walking the dog in the park and for

travels to distant cities and lands. Urban outdoor feel expressed in a casual look.

a tightly packed suitcase without leaving wrinkles, staying neat and looking good. Urbanised fashion

and functionality are not mutually exclusive. Func-tional materials cleverly mix with natural fabrics, as

perfect fit meets a variety of different silhouettes and decorative details that offer both functional and

optical benefits.

Natural materials with function Perfect functionality and enhanced protection prop-

erties. Natural look with matte finishes preferred. Double-weaves and ribstop, knits made from blends

of polyester or polyamide with natural fibres such as Merino, cotton or mixed out of viscose, stretch add-

ed for ultimate comfort. T-shirts, shirts and blouses are light, sublimely comfortable, crease-resistant and

quick to dry. Trousers come in diverse fabrics, depend-ing on where they are worn. Always light with a fash-

ionably slim cut or casually loose-fitting, they too are generally made from a blend of fibres with cotton or

viscose that leave a pleasantly cool feel in the summer. Densely woven microfibers and light softshells, mean-

while, lend themselves to a more active lifestyle, as do wind- and waterproof lightweight coatings and light-

weight laminates with membranes for cyclists.

The theme includes both sportswear and leisurewear. Many items are made from

natural fibres with a natural look that clev-erly disguises highly technical functions. A

broad range of patterns from checked to flower prints and colour blocking in soft, co-

ordinated tones are brought to bear. There is room for wool, viscose and cotton as well

as regenerated and recycled fibre materials. Ecological thinking and natural fibres have

had a comeback over the last years, yet well endowed with relevant and important aspects

such as windproof, waterproof and breathable properties.

The cuts are sporty, yet trendy, casual and ideal for all types of activities. Robust parkas, also

with cotton or light summer wool, perfectly cut chino trousers and a large selection of t-shirts

and blouses are key styles for the ladies. Ap-parel for discerning, down-to-earth, urban and

sporty men include cotton sports jackets, pre-washed linen shirts, t-shirts and functional shirts.

The City Life & Travel collections cut a fine figure both in the city and on travels, providing comforta-

ble garments that easily survive transport even in

Smooth lightweight fleece, customised mesh patterns provide perfect function-

ality and enhanced protection properties where needed. Fleece und brushed knits

keep the body warm in the cool of a sum-mer night, their trendy touch making them

ideal for all types of situation. Always well dressed. New to the range are lightweight

and textured properties, velvet look with a bit of velour feel. Summer versions come in

slight stretch, integrated with more or less lycra, depending on their use. Fleeces keep

warm, dry quickly and are ideal for the morning jog through the park around the corner.

Vibrant and intense colours resonate with erergyGreen tones, blue nuances and pink in all shades

play a major role in this range. In exciting contrast, they work well in combination with soft natu-

ral beige or slight brown tones, black and white. Discreet greys achieve extraordinary effects and add a hint of elegance. Their splendour is under-

lined by dark midnight blue. Combined with muted shades of cinnamon and olive grey. Vibrant and intense colours resonate

With bag and baggage over hill and dale

Hoisting a backpack and well shod, peo-ple are increasingly drawn to get out into

nature whenever they can. Hiking unwinds and lets you explore new aspects of the

world. It is that single moment when nature leaves you speechless. Hiking is an adven-

ture in a backpack. Walking and discovering amazing views. Trekking is independence

and freedom for those who want to escape the daily grind for a while, a few hours or

even days. Hiking frees the mind of stress and recharges the batteries leaving ramblers

energised and with renewed vigour. Hiking is the ultimate medicine. Hiking & trekking are

the trend. Minus the knickerbockers and red socks. Today, it’s colourful fashion as people

roam over hill and dale.

This trend theme offers a plethora of trend statements. Designers seek inspiration

anywhere and everywhere: in the history of hiking itself, in fashion that has contrib-

uted many a colour, detail and silhouette, but also other types of sport are good for

inspiration. A hint of retro aspects remains in terms of plaid & co., as old-school plaid

shirts and blouses, adapted by fashion it-self as possibly trendsetting, hold their

own on hiking trails as much as on the cat-walk. They complement in delightful con-

trast trendy outdoor jackets and trousers. Hiking gear is worn in functional layers that

combine any which way depending on the weather and temperature.

HIKING & TREKKING

Page 16: OutDoor 2014 | THE TRENDBOOK

16

Hikers & trekkers today are consistently clad in func- tional gear, while cutting an equally fine figure in

fashion aspects. Different fabrics and hybrid mate-rial combinations protect against the elements. But

contrary to the collections that address mountaineers and climbers, the technical details are in many ways

kept more discreet, the functions well hidden, though the look is a far cry from the sporty aggressiveness of

performance gear. A trendy silhouette is ever more important for jackets, hiking trousers and functional

undergarments. The right shoes, designed today as colourful as the clothing, provide steady support. Here,

the domain of the typical hiking boot has long since been thrown wide open, as now lightweight all-rounders

in great colour combinations, with light mesh materials and good sole technologies, carry hikers and trekking

freaks along their way.

Those out seeking to enjoy the pure pleas-ures of nature and boundless freedom on

their hike or trekking tour need the right equip -ment. When all belongings are carried on the

back, hikers on one-day trips and trekkers touring for days must set priorities and limit

themselves to the bare essentials. A com-fortable and well-fitting backpack along with

high-quality and, especially, light tackle are the primary factor in deciding the success of a tour

and its enjoyment or displeasure.

Backpacks are functional as never before and complement the hiking attire as an indispensa-

ble piece of equipment. If you didn’t know any better, you could easily mistake the backpacks

in the same colour scheme as the clothing and shoes as fashionable sports accessories – the

icing on the cake, as it were, that completes the outfit. But that would not do justice to the new

backpacks and hiking rucksacks that offer indi-vidual, technical solutions to the requirements of

nature lovers whatever the adventure. And they have become significantly more lightweight.

Page 17: OutDoor 2014 | THE TRENDBOOK

17TRENDcolours

Materials meet many demands Aiming both at sports and travel collections, these lightweight fabrics are soft with a natur- ally dry feel. Perceptible texture is key to the fabric surfaces, even lightweights and soft- shells offer these soft and natural properties. Waterproof apparel features engineered 3-lay-er laminates made from a cotton / polyester mix that still meets the usual functional require-ments. A wide variety of Merino blends sports built-in membranes. The first and second lay-ers come as brushed lightweight knits, some with subtly graduated yarn-dyed checks. Some of the fabrics with reflecting tone-in-tone prints display new aspects of sportive fashion. Best fits show up in a new way of individual body mapping and hybrid technologies with differ-ent kinds of fabrics.

Colours as brilliant as sunshine New colours such as plum, ruby and even pink make their debut and contrast nicely with blu-ish white. Vibrant yellow and different shades of orange reflect the light of the sun. Variations of blue like the sky or the water of mountain lakes, turquoise and combinations of green take us back to the natural path. Lush green or mineral blue adds a touch of nature while injections of orange and red energise this col-our scheme.

Double quick through the mountains

Trail running, speed cross country, fast hik-ing and classic orienteering are the central

trend theme of virtually all outdoor brand collections in 2015. Moving securely in this

terrain requires maximum alpine perfor-mance skills. These should ideally be paired

with knowledge of functional running gear in the classic sense. As a fine art, it has been

perfectly implemented in various well-known collections.

Inspiration is taken from different sources: from the running sport itself, obviously, which

provides interesting suggestions for silhou-ettes, designs and – especially – performance

materials. But the weatherproof qualities need-ed on long trails extend beyond the properties

required for general running and are based on know-how gained from classic mountaineering.

The colours, on the other hand – sparkling, vibrant, bright and cheerful as never before and in an unu-

sually fascinating diversity for outdoor fashion, are inspired by the world of fashion.

Natural running off marked routes and roads is particularly enjoyable on small paths in moun -

tainous terrain and through wild woods. The classic orienteering hails from the Nordic

countries where even today huge, largely un-touched areas invite enthusiasts to engage in

cross country running. As the trail becomes longer and harder, functionality takes on a whole

new meaning.

The more extreme the conditions, the more ade-quately dressed and equipped a trail runner must

be. The weather can turn within minutes and make running in driving rain and lashing wind infinitely

more difficult. Negotiating long trails takes a great toll on the body due to stress and exertion, with

sweat pouring from every pore. The clothing must be appropriate to accommodate this: good moisture

management is a given, as are high breathability, quick dry function and easy care properties.

Page 20: OutDoor 2014 | THE TRENDBOOK

20

Wind and weather can be just as draining and re-quire gear that offer good wind and water resist-

ance. These properties enhance both wellbeing and performance, but also have a direct effect on

the runner’s health. Without high moisture-absorb-ing capabilities, the skin will chill very quickly.

The speed of running requires maximum freedom of movement: nothing must restrict or hinder. A feel-

ing of freedom and limitlessness that is hard to find these days in daily life motivates to trail run in nature.

The rhythm of the breath falls in step with the rhythm of nature. No cars, no roads, no pollution. Only nature

in its purest form, wild and rough terrain off the beat-en track that begs to be explored.

Long tights inspired by the running sport are the most common type of trousers worn, as they hug the body,

offer exceptional stretch capabilities for freedom of movement thanks to a high elastane content, and the

somewhat more robust material compared to pure run-ning tights protects the lower legs from plants and high

grass. The first layer is made up of functional under-garments that allow significant amounts of sweat to be

transported to the outside.

These are topped either with super lightweight waistcoats made from windproof fabrics, pad-ded with downs for cooler temperatures, or

else lightweight fleeces or thin jackets with water-repellent, or better still, waterproof, pro-perties. Good trail shoes are the be-all and end-

all of running, as the trail may be slippery, wet and uneven. Anti-slip soles under the shoes provide secure and reliable support each step

of the way. Running on soft ground is easy on the legs and muscles and feels natural. It also allows full concentration on how the foot is

planted. Trail running is a whole lot more excit-ing than running in the street.

Lightness of fabrics and fibresFunctionality is paramount in the choice of fi-bres and fabrics. Trendy little knick-knacks have

no place here. Details, reduced to the essen-tials, are there to support the body in its move-ments. Jerseys in different versions and thick-

nesses for running tights even come with slight or more pronounced compression. Running shirts, t-shirts and tops are produced as func-

tional knitwear, have different textures and feel soft and comfortable on the skin. Tight-fitting, lightweight and breathable stretch fabrics with

a high elastane content dry within minutes.

Page 21: OutDoor 2014 | THE TRENDBOOK

21TRENDcolours

Mesh inserts provide additional air circulation to help the body keep sufficiently cool. Soft tricot backings on light softshells flatter the body and protect from the wind. Functional fabrics are

printed on both sides, some back prints gently shining through to the outside. Waterproof

jackets are lightweight 2-layer constructions with integrated membranes or a touch heavier in 3-layer constructions. Even if not natural, some

fabrics appear that way, with naturally textured surfaces. Softshells are always windproof or feature different levels of wind permeability, al-

ways suited to the fast-paced outdoor activity.

A firework of coloursVarious shades of turquoise, aqua and deep blue are warmed by salmon, orange or aubergine. Bleached yellow brightens up the look, intense vi-olet adds a lively touch. A dynamic colour scheme

that grabs the attention and is as optimistic and dy-namic as the fast-paced sport itself. Neon aspects in green, orange & pink set the trail on fire. Like electric fireworks, the colours have the same high

energy that pushes you to the max.

trendthemeMATERIAL

With functional outdoor clothing you are well prepared for rain, cold snaps and storms with high wind speeds. In the latest 2015 collections, outdoor- fans will again find some new exciting sports functions and a lot of innova-tive functional materials, which will make their experience in nature easier and more comfortable. Top priority is given to lightness combined with reli-able weather protection in the area of mem- brane laminates, followed by the increasing awareness of the is-sues of sustainability and environmen-tally sound production of the products. The thematic groups of trail running, orientation and cross country runs have conquered their place as out-door a dynamic fast forward activity that requires products inspired from the „running“ sector. Almost all well-known brands have adapted to this trend and created a symbiosis be-tween light running sports apparel

and reliable weather protection. High breathability, excellent moisture wicking and fast drying times are the most im-portant functions that must be fulfilled by materials, and besides this, they should also be summery, light, airy, stretchy, wind-proof and insulating (for cold weather), comfortable to wear, easy to maintain and if possible also have integrated UV protection.

Innovative materials conjure functionality in outdoor clothing

Functional properties of fibres and fab-rics are the alpha and omega of out-door clothing. Who moves in nature, whether it‘s a hike, a hill-walk, climb-ing, a trail run or an extreme expedi-tion, always carries the „Weather“ uncertainty factor with him. Weather can change drastically quickly, espe-cially in the mountains, and that as yet bright blue sky can change into a dark storm front and bring a downpour within minutes.

Croz 3L, VAUDE‘s latest stretch hardshell jacket, of-fers reliable protection against wind and weather. It is ex-tremely light, breathable and thanks to small est pack size, it can be stowed away in the rucksack for when „need comes“.

Page 23: OutDoor 2014 | THE TRENDBOOK

Thanks to its combination of lightness and stretchiness, the new Gore-Tex® Active Knit Cloudy stands out of the Eider collection. It boasts windproof and waterproof properties, is breathable, very stretchy and weighs just 260 grams. The seams are sealed with a 13mm wide micro tape and are therefore durable and waterproof.

The technical stretch hardshell jacket Croz 3L by VAUDE is very light, stretchy, robust and aimed at mountaineering professionals, whether on a Himalayas expedition or a recreational climb. You can carry the light re-liable weather protection, which folds to a very small size, in your back-pack, for when „need comes“. It is light enough to be used in summer and at the same time strong enough for all year round protection. The 3-layer alpine jacket fits in a backpack and is not only robust thanks to its technical polyamide an advantage of the PTFE-free Ceplex membrane.

Integrated UV protection is extremely useful in outdoor clothing: Eider presents the new mountain sports pants made of Drycore® Bi-Stretch Light Soft. Thanks to incorpo-rated elastane fibres, this lightweight pant fabric offers good freedom of movement and has integrated SPF45 UV protec-tion. This protects the skin and body under the blazing sun in summer. It is well known that dark colours absorb more heat than light ones under the sun, but this is taken well into account in the Coldblack® textile finishes by Schoeller Tex-

til. This effect is especially felt with t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts that are worn

close to the skin. Coldblack® reduces the heating of the fabric from the ab-sorption of sunlight. It also provides

reliable UV protection of at least UPF 30.

Eider Eider presents its new moun-tain sports trousers and bermu-das made from the light, elastic Drycore® Bi-Stretch Light Soft fabric, which has integrated SPF45 UV protection.

Event Fabrics is represented by the extremely lightweight, innovative mem-brane in the Rab and Montane collections. Thanks to DVStorm, 3-layer laminates can be produced with very fine 15 denier upper materials and even finer 10 denier lining materials. Test results show that DVStorm laminates are about 20% lighter and offer 15% better breathability than materials with the original eVent membrane. The water column stands higher than 10,000 mm, the breathability is 26 kg/m2. The high breathability of the DVStorm materials improves the wearing comfort of weath-er protective clothing.

Norrøna also aims at lightness with its jacket Bitihorn. To be on the go in a minimalistic manner, without sacrificing reliable wind and weather pro-tection. The Norwegian brand has completely revised its Bitihorn concept. Their highlight is the new Bitihorn Alpha 60 jacket. With this jacket, the Nor-wegians integrate a warming insulation for the first time in their lightweight line. Thanks to the airy mesh construction of Polartec Alpha, the jacket is very breathable, ideal for endurance-intensive activities such as fast trek-king and trail running, and weighs just 240 grams. The Bitihorn dri3 (314g) stands out among waterproof jackets as the lightest three-layer jacket by Norrøna with an ultra-thin and elastic PFC-free PU membrane with DWR finish. It has a water column of 20,000 mm and the measured water vapour permeability rate lies at an MVTR value of 20,000 mm.

Mammut wants to prove its Alpine performance at a run through the mountains. The new running shirt MTR 201 Tech Shirt Men, proves the impor-tance of new designs and is ideally suited for alpine cross country and trail running. When the trail in the mountainous terrain becomes harder, func-tionality gets a new meaning and the more extreme condi-tions become, the better the trail runner should be equipped. The sleeves of the running shirt MTR 201 can be rolled up and rolled down again in no time at all. Thanks to a loop on the wrist and hooks on the shoulder, the warmer long-sleeved shirt be-comes a short-sleeved T-shirt, with just one movement. Maier Sports presents an innovation in terms of membrane tech-nology: the innovative waterproof, windproof and breathable Sys-tem Dual Protection® (SDP). This is a double membrane that is incorporated in the stretchy 2-layer men‘s jacket TAMESI and the ladies‘ jacket YIVA, with the same prop-erties. For this technology, the brand received the2014 PlusX the world‘s greatest innovation award for technology, sport and lifestyle. The air bridge between the SDP double membrane transports a tremendous amount of moisture to the outside and prevents condensation. The environmentally friendly PFC-free DWR does not need to be im- pregnated again. To continue on the subject of sustainability and PFC-free, water-repel-lent DWR treatment, Maier sports offers even more than 40 nature-friendly products for outdoor and recreation in its new 2015 collection.

Mammut demonstrates alpine performance with their changea-ble running shirt MTR 201 Tech Shirt Men. This new design solu-tion allows a flexible adaptation to changing weather conditions: thanks to a loop on the wrist and a shoulder hook, long sleeves can be rolled up into short ones and the other way round in one simple step and in no time at all.

Thanks to its innovative water and wind proof, breathable Dual Pro-tection ® (SDP) system, Maier Sports technology has been hon-oured with the 2014 PlusX Award, the world‘s biggest innovation award for technology, sports and lifestyle. Outdoor clothing with Cold-black® finishing technology from Schoeller Textil displays advanced UV protection. Cold-black® prevents textiles from heating up through absorption of direct sunlight and guaran-tees a minimum UV protec-tion factor of 30.

In the new 2015 summer col-lection, Kjus deploys for the first time the KJUS Air Circula-tion VentTM ventilation system, which received an ISPO-award for innovative technologies. The Credo men‘s jacket is a waterproof 3-layer jacket, permanently protected from rain and wind by the Der-mizax® EV-Membrane with DWR-Technologie.

For the very first time Kjus has introduced an award-winning technology in the summer collection: The Dermizax® EV membrane with DWR technology is incorporated in the Men‘s Jacket Credo and the ladies jacket for permanent protection against rain and wind. The mem-brane by Toray provides breathability (water vapour permeability), which is important for moun-tain sports. The KJUS Air Circulation VentTM ventilation system, praised with an ISPO award, provides for good thermal regulation. It has also been used for the first time in the summer collection, adding adjustable ventilation closures on the forearm, which allow the body‘s heat to be optimally transported to the outside. The 4-way stretch material provides the necessary freedom of movement.

Even the down feather specialists Yeti focused on lightness in their Strato model. With a weight of just 165 grams, the Strato Down Jacket is probably the lightest down jacket for men on the market. This is pos-sible thanks to the ultra-light, Next-to-NothingTM textile. With a weight of just 19 grams per metre, Yeti employs the world‘s lightest down-proof outer fabric. Despite its lightness, the Strato is impressively stable, durable and permanently down-proof. Besides, it is also water resistant and very breathable. Having an extremely low packing volume, the whole jacket can be stowed in its own left front pocket and carried in the backpack without much loss of space. The light-est 3-season synthetic sleeping bag in the world, according to its manufacturer, is presented by Nordisk with the new model Oscar. It weighs just 500 grams. It is best suit-

ed for temperatures around 8 degrees. The outer fabric consists of an ultra-fine

and water-resistant 7-a recycled, high-performance synthetic fi-

bre fleece that retains its in-sulating performance even after numerous washes.

Jack Wolfskin has further devel-oped the proprietary Texapore weath-er protection technology in the sum-mer collection 2015. In the future, Texapore Softshell shall be linked to the AIR technology to attain higher air permeability at a constant water density. For the first time, the use and skilful combination of different Texapore materials has produced entirely new hardshell hybrid con- structions. The completely water-proof Gravity Flow jacket is an alpine hybrid jacket for trekking made of a new Texapore O2 + 2.5-layer lami-nate that is processed in combina-tion with a 3L-Texapore.Hyproof. The seams are of course welded for wa-ter tightness.

Nordisk has developed the probably lightest 3-season synthetic fi-bre sleeping bag in the outdoor world. The model Oscar only weighs 500 grams.

It can hardly get any lighter: Yeti presents the Strato down jacket that weighs unbelievable 165 grams (men‘s model). Its outside consists of the ultra-light Next-to-NothingTM fabric with a weight of only 19 grams/square metre.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

“A noticeable trend on the part of consumers is the desire for more natural fibres in func-

tional clothing and PFC-free DWR equipment that is free from any health concerns”, com-

mented Daniel Steuber from Jack Wolfskin. One attempt to meet this need is Function 65, which is manufactured in an ecologically

unobjectionable way. “We see another trend in our own collection in terms of the Texapore

Softshell Air+. This new material is ground- breaking for the extremely sporty pieces of the

collection because by using it we have been able to consistently implement hybrid material concepts.”

Hybrid jacket construction, in other words the successful combination of different materials

with different functions, has been implement-ed in the Exolight Texapore jacket, made with our brand’s own Texapore Softshell Air+ as the main material and the Texapore Soft-shell Infinity Hyproof as reinforcement on the shoulders and arms. That makes the jacket an outstanding hybrid jack-et well-suited to Alpine trekking. The

performance product is equipped with two large breast pockets, an interior pocket, and

a sleeve pocket. The hood can accommo-date a helmet. Furthermore, the zippers are

waterproof and the hem can be adjusted to ensure optimal seating comfort.

The new collection’s colour range is also com-pletely in line with the latest trends. Stand-out,

very modern tones in bright colours are used for the extremely sporty part of the collection, whereas more subtle nuances take the fore-

front in the Trekking & Travel pieces. Carefully coordinated colour palettes make it possible to combine all of the products with one another

and give consumers the opportunity to put to-gether colour-coordinated outfits. One highlight

colour in the extremely sporty area is a bright, almost loud orange called “bright pumpkin”. All parts of the entire collection - from the water-

proof hardshells to the mid-layers on down to the base layers, have been ergonomically co-

ordinated with one another. They offer optimal breathability and air-permeability in a layer sys-

tem. The material Texapore Softshell Air+ is new and

a real highlight for waterproof jackets.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

“Our 2015 collection emphasises functional-ity with youthful and sporty styling that com-

bines high performance with high fashion. In addition to basic functionality such as mois-

ture management, wind and weather protec-tion and elasticity, sun protection is an impor-

tant feature of our apparel, with ratings of up to UPF 50. Pearl Izumi allows for smooth outdoor running thanks to state-of-the art mate-rials,” says a brand spokesperson.

The brand’s latest collection in-cludes highly functional materi-

als with breathable, open mesh structures that circulate air, wick away

moisture and cool the skin. The gar-ments also offer sun protection with var-

ious materials that block or reflect danger-ous UV rays. Another important focus in

the 2015 collection from Pearl Izumi is the colour palette, which combines soft, natural

tones with vibrant colour contrasts.

Among this year’s highlights are the men’s Big Air riding jersey with an open mesh material for im-

proved breathability, which features a loose fit that allows protectors to be worn underneath. It also in-

cludes an integrated lens cloth for easy cleaning. The jersey can be worn with the colour-coordinated Sum-

mit shorts for cross-country and trail riding, which fea-ture a DWR coating that repels moisture and dirt. The high proportion of elastic ensures perfect freedom of

movement. Women can choose the fashionable and functional Flash Sport tank top for running, which is

made of Transfer Dry material that wicks moisture away from the skin. It also includes an integrated bra

for perfect support as well as UPF 50+ sun protection. Pearl Izumi offers apparel in shades of Mandarin Red,

Citronelle, Deep Lake, Gumdrop, Citron and Sul-phur Springs. In addition to the sun-protective

jersey fabric, the brand also features new materi-als such as a dirt-repellent DWR coating and the

innovative In-R-Cool technology for body tem-perature regulation.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

Interest in sporting apparel remains strong. In our opinion, current trends clearly point toward versatility. The range of sporting activities is broadening, which makes ad-vanced products for a variety of sports all the more important. Lightness, breathability and thermal regulation are the top trends in functional clothing,” states Sarah Seger, Press Spokesperson for Marmot. The OutDoor fashion show will feature a cross section of advanced products for hiking, climbing and trail running as well as relaxed city and travel styles. Functionality and com-fort are paramount in these products. Among the highlights for 2015 is the Crux jacket with the new waterproof, breathable Marmot Na-noProTM technology. This functional material features a structure of micropores that is fin-er than any previous materials. The densely packed pores ensure improved breathability while remaining waterproof: not a drop can penetrate. A dynamic air exchange between the skin and the material ensures a comfortable interior climate even during heavy perspiration.

The Crux is feather-light, weighing only 241 grams. Its elastic construction offers freedom of movement, and reinforcements on the shoulders protect the wearer from abra-sions in case of falls. The Mono pants, on the other hand, are the perfect choice for difficult climbs both indoors and out-doors. Their soft, breathable material with a sun protection rating of UPF 30 is extremely elastic and has light-weight reinforcements on the knees and seat that protect the wearer from scraping injuries.Marmot has selected clear, pure, expressive and dynamic colours inspired by nature. In addition to the NanoProTM technology, the lat-est additions to the range of ma-terials include Nanowick, Quick-dry and Airflow. Marmot integrates excellent moisture management into all its products. Due to the unique construction of the ma-

terials, breathability and dryness have been improved without using ad-

ditional chemicals.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

At SCOTT Sports, we focus on functionality and versatility. This season’s trends are reflected

in a mix of appealing colours and designs that combine functionality with style. Our appar-

el offers maximum comfort for hiking, run-ning, biking or any other outdoor activity. We

make high-quality products for a wide range of uses,” says Joscha Harms from SCOTT Sports.

In 2015 the brand is offering a diverse range of apparel. All the products from the run-

ning and biking lines are colour-co-ordinated for perfect combinations.

Their cuts range from the loose-fitting biking line to the tighter fits of the trail running line. They feature bright colours

and clever details such as pockets and mesh inserts. SCOTT utilises high-quali-

ty materials in classic styles with brands such as Gore-Tex®, Polartec®, Drirelease® and PrimaLoft®.

The “Lightweight Garment Concept” is the brand’s latest innovation. With a new name, a new

design and new colours but the same unique func-

tions, this year SCOTT is presenting the new AMT line. The All Mountain Tech line now goes by the name Trail Tech and has been redesigned to reach new heights. The designers have con-

tinued to perfect the ultralight shirts and shorts in the 2015 collection with new products and colours.

One notable product from the trail running collection is the SCOTT TR10 shirt for demanding run-ners, which is equipped with a half-length front zipper, reflective details, UPF 30+ sun protection, a 3D fabric insert in the back and an ergonomic cut. Anoth-er highly functional item is the prizewinning SCOTT T2 Kinaba-lu 3.0 running shoe, a versatile,

flat, performance-oriented trail running shoe with moderate cushioning and a stable feel. The colours are more lively than ever: men can choose from Tangerine Orange and Red or Blue Nights and Diva Blue for running and biking, and for women there is Classic Green combined with Bright Pink and Ber-

ry Purple. The SCOTT colours are inspired by fashion, architecture, nature and everyday life and were devel-

oped by SCOTT’s own designers.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

Colours are our top trend in 2015. Bright col-ours combined with subtle accents make for

appealing contrasts. Another development is everyday functional clothing for commuters

and e-bike riders who bike to work and have completely different requirements for their

clothing. They expect modern, functional cloth-ing that can be used in a variety of situations.

In 2015, the brand is offering apparel in modern, expressive colours with a variety of features for

functionality and comfort, including the Explorer shorts and the Storm jacket. Shoes, backpacks

and glasses are colour-coordinated for a har-monious overall appearance. All the wom-

en’s and men’s tops are equipped with a special glasses holder and an integrated

lens cloth.

Among the highlights of the collection are the Storm jacket and the Ex-

plorer shorts in versions for men and women. Small, innovative de-

tails on the shorts and the jacket serve both as practical refinements and eye-catchers in any sporting activity or weather conditions. These

products are all about comfort. The colour com-binations in the women’s line include Jazzberry

and Island Green as well as Jazzberry and Light-ning Blue. The Jazzberry tone is a new addition

to the collection and is reminiscent of the vibrant hue of raspberries in summer. Men can choose

from appealing combinations such as Lightning Blue and Island Green or Lightning Blue and Or-ange, both of which offer fresh accents alongside

the classic tones of black and anthracite.

The Heat Ventilation System is an innovative tech-nology that utilises materials such as Dryshield and

Wicktex. This system keeps the body cool during riding and accelerates the body’s natural distri-

bution of heat. It uses air currents on the back to increase the release of heat in this crucial area. A

precisely tailored mesh insert made of highly breath-able material on the back promotes the evapora-

tion of sweat and heat dissipation.

Which outdoor trend do you see for 2015?

Our trend themes and focal points for the summer 2015 collection are sus-tainability, ecology, light weight and hybrid designs. These are the trends throughout the entire market. With new innovative hybrid construc-tions, that is, the sensible combi-nation of different materials, each with different characteristics, it is possible to achieve different tech-

ni cal functionalities in clothing”, said Benedikt Tröster, VAUDE press spokesman for mountain

sports. When creating the collections, special emphasis was placed on combining the materi-

als in such a way as to achieve the highest pos-sible comfort for the wearer.

The highlight for 2015 is the elastic Croz three-lay-er Alpine jacket. Because of its outer material

made of high-tech polyamide, it is not only robust but also wind and waterproof, yet remains very

breathable owing to its 100% PTFE-free ceplex membrane. The cut has been especially tailored to

the needs of mountain climbers. It has ventilation zippers and an adjustable hood that can accommo-

date a helmet and it won’t slip out of the belt, even on long climbs. Thanks to stretch materials, the

stretch hardshell jacket offers plenty of freedom of movement and combines functionality with sustain-

ability. For women, the women’s simony jacket, a true lightweight, must be mentioned. With its Prima-loft-quilted torso, the casual hybrid-design insulating

jacket provides warmth and ensures freedom of move-ment thanks to the sleeves’ stretchable material. The

Men’s Fjordan Jacket is lightweight protection from the elements for trekkers who place great value on

carrying as little additional weight as possible. The 2.5 layer jacket is not only light and robust but also boasts a very high percentage of stretch material, ensuring

perfect comfort. The elastic men’s Civetta jacket, on the other hand, is a real all-rounder for almost any ath-

letic activity.

Red, blue and green tones are im-portant colours in the VAUDE col-lection, where they are brought

together in brilliant new combina-tions. VAUDE works with its own

colour team to create a unified col-our scheme across all of its product

areas. A new feature of the different lines is elastic mate-rials, including in waterproof laminated jackets.
