CHOOSING YOUR COURSE

We offer an excellent choice of 50 academic or vocational courses, which open the doors to over 50,000 degree courses.

There are two broad categories of study programmes we offer at Sir George Monoux College - Advanced Level programmes and Intermediate Level programme.

Advanced Level ProgrammeAS/A2 Level – we offer over 30 AS level subject areas and A2 subjects.

At BTEC we offer BTEC Diplomas, BTEC Certificates/Subsidiary Diplomas and a BTEC Extended Programme.

BTEC Diplomas are practical, skill and knowledge-based courses. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are linked to realistic workplace situations. You may qualify to study an AS Level alongside your course.

BTEC Level 3 Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma - The BTEC Level 3 Certificate (1st year) is equivalent to an AS Level. The BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (2nd year) is equivalent to an A level. These would normally be studied alongside an AS/A level programme.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma - As well as learning about the sector skill area you have chosen, you will develop the skills and knowledge you need to start your career. You will also have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as part of the programme. This is a full time, 2 year course, which is equivalent to 3 A Levels. This means that when you have finished, you can choose to go into employment straight away or go to university first.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - This AS qualification enables students to conduct research into a specific area that is relevant to either their academic or personal interests. It is particularly worthwhile for students hoping to gain places on more competitive degree courses/areas of employment, since it helps them stand out at interviews. Students make the decision about studying for the qualification at the end of their first year.

Intermediate Level ProgrammeBTEC Level 2 Diploma with Progression to Level 3 - For some of our students a staged programme for the attainment of a BTEC Level 3 vocational qualification better meets their needs. You will start your programme by undertaking the one year BTEC Level 2 Diploma. When you have successfully completed the Level 2 you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 course, provided you have good attendance and have achieved a Merit or above. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification, such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSE grades A*- C and is a full time course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A Level

5 GCSE A*-C including English

BTEC Level 35 GCSE A*-C including English or Merit in BTEC Level 2 Diploma

BTEC Level 24 GCSE D/E grades including English or BTEC Level 1 Diploma

In addition, many AS subjects require a minimum grade in a specific, relevant subject. Our website includes full details regarding this by subject area. Ideally, students will want to study their strongest subjects, or subjects closely related to their strongest subjects. Our aim is to ensure that every student has the ability and motivation to succeed on their programme.

English GCSE as an entry requirementNormally, GCSE in English or English Language at grade C or above is needed to enrol onto a Level 3 programme (English Literature is not an acceptable alternative).

Applicants with Grade D would need to sit an online test at enrolment (called BKSB) to ascertain their skill level and to determine whether their literacy skills are adequate for the course they wish to study. Applicants without a GCSE grade C in English and/or Maths will need to re-sit them.

iGCSEiGCSE English for speakers of English as the first language is considered equivalent to GCSE and is an acceptable alternative. However, the iGCSE for speakers of English as the second language (which is a different qualification) is not accepted as an alternative to GCSE English. Overseas applicants are required to sit a standard English test to determine their level of learning. This is normally the externally taken IELTS test that assesses English language skills.

Average Point Score (APS)APS is the system used to work out which course is best for you based on your GCSE grades. For full details of the APS’s required to study specific A Level subjects, please refer to our website.
