Mark Your Calendar!

You're an 18 or 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Val-ley, 11-14-1965, LZ Xray, Vietnam. Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8 - 1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in. You're lying there, listening to the en-emy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is 1/2 way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-

Vac markings are on it. Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gun-fire, to the Doctors and Nurses. And, he kept coming back.... 13 more times..... And took about 30 of you and your bud-dies out, who would never have gotten out. Medal of Honor Recipient Ed Freeman died last Wednesday at the age of 80,

in Boise, ID ......May God rest his soul.

(Oh yeah, Paul Newman died that day too. I guess you knew that -- He got a lot more press than Ed Freeman.)

White shirt open collar, military crease (to be Airline pilot style with two (2) pockets with button down flaps and epaulets). Trousers, Blue dress (with NCO "red" stripe) with Belt, Marine Corps Web with brass buckle. Trousers, Black (optional). Belt, black with Marine Corps emblem on square gold buckle or Belt, black, dress (optional). Socks, black. Shoes, black, plain toe, gloss, or highly shined.

The Short Sleeve Undress Uniform is in all ways identical to the Long Sleeve Uniform, except the sleeve length. It has the same pockets, shoulder epaulets, creases and patches. The top most button is left open and a tie is never worn with the short sleeve Undress Uniform shirt. The dress blue trousers with red NCO stripe are to be worn with this uniform, as well and the black trousers are also an option. The same belts and belt options are worn with the short sleeve Undress Uniform as with the long sleeve Undress Uniform. Sunburst insignia and ribbons are worn the same as the long sleeve shirt. The optional name tag is worn the same way as with the long sleeve shirt, too.

Status of Historic Headline Removal at VAMC

State and National levels of the Marine Corps League, and other veteran’s organizations have indicated that the issue has been taken far enough. All concluded that we needed to use our resources to fight for veteran’s benefits. Personally, my heart wants to continue to support our WWII Veterans that fought and died for those historic headlines. It is a disgrace that “political correctness” outweighs the sacrifices they endured. But I am a Marine and I do follow orders. Marines, while we apparently cannot go back to fix this injustice, VAMC Director Mattice has realized there is a better way. He has offered to work with veterans to avoid it in the future. To do so Mattice is establishing a Vet-erans Advisory committee to review and advise him in such matters for the future. Director Mattice has asked me to serve on this committee with BrigGen Goodman and others. No, this isn’t all that we had hoped to ac-complish, but I believe it is a step in the right direction. With your permission, I will accept the offer to serve on this committee. Now I want to settle some unfinished business. The public mishandling of this issue by Department Comman-dant at the Department Conference in Terre Haute was not exactly constructive. The brunt of the unfortunate handling of this was at my personal expense. Not sure why it was handled the way it was, probably bad advice. But I do know one thing, I am a Marine and our Marine Corps League mission must continue. I will not allow one mistake to take my focus away from the overall mission. Marines lets go forward.
