1 From the Helm…. Bud Albright- Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 I attended the 86 th National Marine Corps League convention held in Rochester MN the first week of Au- gust. It was one of the liveliest conventions that I have attended. There were 32 proposed by-law changes pre- sented to the body and while most of them were of the administrative type there was some that you should be aware of. For the past couple of years there has been talk about league uniforms and the proper wearing of them. Our uniform is distinct and you should be proud to wear it but wear it properly. The biggest complaint about the uniform has been centered on the “ceremonial uniform” After trying to get members to use this uniform in its proper manner a by-law change was submitted and after much talk it was voted to completely eliminate the uni- form. This means that we can no longer wear the kaki shirt. Also some members have worn the dress blue trousers with the red blazer. This is not permitted under our uniform regulations. On this same subject an associate member can wear the dress blue trouser but without the blood stripe. There was much discussion on the subject of membership and the results were to expand the power of the local detachment’s authority to ap- prove or disapprove an applicant’s request to join the league. From the Jr. Vice: Gary Nasby As the Scuttlebutt Editor, I have been tabulating the results of the Questionnaire that was mailed out recently. Besides the poor return of the questionnaire , (even though an addressed , stamped envelope was included at a cost of $150 to the Detachment to ensure a good return of information), what really bothers me is one comment on them in particular.

Question- “I joined the Marine Corps League for- “ Answer- “Camaraderie”. But then the answers for not attending meetings and functions were many and varied. By not attending you are missing the one thing you joined for. If you need a ride, contact me. I will try to find a nearby Marine that is attending. If you have a problem we can help with , con-tact me. If you don’t know where we are, contact me. For whatever your reason, and you would like to discuss, contact me to see if I can help. Stop in on the 2nd or 4th Thursday of each month @19:00 for a meeting, or on the 3rd Saturday of each month for our new Chicken BBQ’s, or on most Saturdays after 9:00 am when some of us are there working on your new home, “Marine Barracks Indianapolis” I guarantee you will find some COMARADERIE. On May 2, 2009, Capt Melissa Jacobs ran the OneAmerica 500 Fest Mini Marathon (13.1 miles) with a Marine Corps flag in support of the Hiram I. Bearss Detachment of the Ma-rine Corps League. She finished in 1:58 (one hour, fifty-eight minutes) and, thanks to your support, raked in approximately $4,500 for the League. The 2009 Mini was a personal best for Capt Jacobs and the League - she finished three minutes faster and raised $2,000 more than last year!!

(From The Helm– PG.1) While the part of the by-law that gives the local detachment the power to approve membership stayed the same it added several different reasons for the detachment to consider when checking out a potential member. There was a proposal to give detachments greater control of electronic communications to better control the same. This was approved. Also all National Officers were re-elected. If you have any questions on the above or wish to know about the other proposals feel free to contact me. As I have said before our detachment will follow the national by-laws concerning the MCL uni-forms. We are planning a field mess night on October 24th. Uniform will be utilities. While a complete set is requested any part of a utility uniform from any era will be sufficient. We need to know if you plan to attend no later than our regular meeting on September 10th. If you have never attended a mess night try and make this. Stay tuned for more details. You can contact me or Col. Haislip. Book of the month is Ambush Valley Author Eric Hammel Semper Fidelis……. MARINES SLOW TO RESPOND By Marine Don Myers

I’m well aware I have a reputation of being somewhat of a loose cannon. I prefer to think of myself of standing up and telling it like it is. I’ve spent my entire lifetime of leading by exam-ple and I’ve got the scars both from combat and the Marine Corps League to prove it. Now I intend to tell it like it is regarding our PLANK PROGRAM for raising funds for our new build-ing to keep it afloat. After thinking about the lack of response we regarding our building fundraiser I figured there are a lot of fence straddlers out there waiting to see if we’re going to sink or swim about this idea of developing an Indianapolis Marine Corps Heritage Center. Maybe they’re waiting to step in at just the right moment to bail out our Heritage Center Committee if things look bleak. Well let me be the first to inform you WE ARE SINKING FAST, I don’t think our situa-tion could look much bleaker. I thought sure that most Marine officers and senior enlisted would come through very fast for a project of this nature. But to date six officers have stepped up to the plate to help out. Only one set of married officers have completed a Plank Program pledge. So has one staff NCO (me.) We’ve also got three other Plank pledges completed. And, seven other folks that have pledged full planks. In addition five other people have offered monetary donations not involving planks. Now personally I sent out 180 email invitations to all my PALS and to date three of my 180 PALS have sent in donations. Of course we mailed out 275 brochures with the Scuttlebutt newsletter and by last count four Marines offered to help out from that solicitation. Everybody who reads this is aware that as a nation we are in deep financial doo-doo. This does not impress me one bit because I’m talking MARINE CORPS here, not bank bail out or Wall Street bail outs are any thing else except get off your duffs and start getting some dona-tions in here to support your local Marine Corps Heritage Center. BOOK REVIEWS BY DON MYERS The Last Stand of Fox Company (by Bob Drury & Tom Clavin) Korea – November 1950: 100,000 Chinese soldiers near the Chosin Reservoir surround The 1st Marine Division of 10,000. Their only chance of survival is to fight their way south through the narrow Toktong Pass, a choke point gorge that needs to be defended at all cost. The mission of fighting the Chinese and holding them at bay from Toktong Pass is handed to Cap-tain William Barber and his 246 men of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment. The tenacity and heroism of Fox Company Marines come through loud and clear in this epic book of valor that is almost unbelievable in its scope. An-other famous Marine comes through to save the survivors of Fox Company who has already fought an entire Chinese Divi-sion to a standstill. LtCol Raymond Davis leads a 500-man battalion to relieve Fox Company through hip deep snow and 40 below zero weather. An outstanding tale of Marines fighting in any place and clime. AMERICAN COMMANDO – Evans Carlson & his WW II Marine Raiders (by John Wukovits) Considered a maverick by most Marine officers Evans Carlson spent years observing guerrilla tactics all over the world. In 1942 America needed its hero’s and it needed some victories to boost civilian and military moral. LtCol Carlson had the elite fighting force to do just that – the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion ready to prove their worth behind Japanese lines. This book gives an honest appraisal of the famous Makin raid that took place near Tarawa in July 1942. James Roosevelt, the Presidents son took part in this raid and was awarded the Navy Cross. The lessons learned from this near disaster allowed the legendary 30 day mission on Guadalcanal that help lay the foundation for Special Forces in the modern military. Carl-son and Merritt Edson (whom detested Carlson) are the fathers of the Marine Corps present Recon forces. Books are at our barracks library – check them out with our Quartermaster
