Happy Holidays!

New Scuttlebutt Editor! After two years as the Editor,

Melissa Jacobs moves on to other detachment initiatives

Hello Scuttlebutt Readers! When I joined the detachment in December of 2006, The Scuttlebutt was on the brink of being can-celled. No one had time to put it together, and the cost of it seemed to out-weigh the benefits. Even as a new member, this de-cision made me a little nervous - The Scut-tlebutt is the detachment’s only means of communicating with members and local supporters, so without it I just didn’t know

how we could be successful at any detachment initiatives. I knew that I wanted to get involved in the detachment in some way, and obviously this was where I was needed most.

Many Leaguers were happy to see a new face in the mix - so happy, in fact, that they supported the newsletter’s revitali-zation by purchasing ads and becoming Scuttlebutt Boosters. That support, combined with the mini marathon that I run each year for the detachment, actually helped The Scuttlebutt pay for itself. Thank you so much for your support over the last two years! I will continue to run the mini mara-thon each year and to be involved with other detachment initiatives. Semper Fi! - Melissa K. Jacobs

HIB Auxiliary Dues Due! By Don Myers Lets keep our auxiliary going! If you pay your wife’s dues, now is the time to renew (the cost is only $14 per auxiliary member). Send payment to Auxiliary Paymaster Annabel Brunton, 2806 Holly Park Dr., In-dianapolis, IN 46241. (Make the check out to Annabel since the auxiliary has never established a bank account.) For any Marine that would like a family member to be an auxiliary member, please contact An-nabel at 244-3929 for instructions on the cost and what to do. While on the subject of a detachment auxiliary let me say that we have been extremely lucky to have survived this long without an active auxil-iary supporting us. It's been difficult not having the backbone support and experience that keeps most organizations afloat and I think it's about time that we push this issue to the max.

continued from page 3. 2. My car hasn’t run in years. Can I still donate it? Yes, we are able to accept most vehicles running or not (exceptions include some older vehicles whose value would not offset the cost of towing). To find out if we can accept your vehi-cle, please complete and submit the online donation form.

3. What do I need in order to donate my vehicle? We would like the title to the vehicle, but if you do not have it please call us anyway. It is possible that other arrangements may be made. Please call CarDonation.Com toll-free at 1-800-237-5714 seven days a week.

4. Can you pick up vehicles in all 50 states? Yes, we are able to pick up accepted vehicles in the continental U.S. and Hawaii.

5. How will my car be picked up? We will arrange to have your vehicle towed away by a profes-sionally licensed, bonded and insured towing company.

6. How long will it take to pick up my car? We will arrange for a towing company to contact you via tele-phone within three to four business days at the latest. If you need your car picked up sooner, please let us know as we are oftentimes able to accommodate rush orders as well.

7. Is my donation tax deductible? Yes, vehicle and vessel donations made to MARINE CORPS LEAGUE HIRAM I. BEARSS DETACHMENT #089 are tax de-ductible to the full extent of the law. The Hiram I. Bearss Detach-ment of the Marine Corps League (www.IndyMarines.org) is a non-profit organization within the provisions of IRS Code 501(c)(4) with a special group exemption letter which allows for contri-butions to be tax deductible by the donor. However, individual tax situations vary so please check with a tax professional to de-termine what if any tax benefit you may receive from a tax de-ductible donation.

8. How does my tax deduction work? The IRS allows you, the taxpayer, to claim a tax deduction of (a) the value of your vehicle up to $500 or (b) if we sell the vehicle for more than $500 we will mail you a completed IRS tax form 1098-C with that value for your tax purposes. For additional in-formation, the IRS provides a Donor's Guide to Car Donations which sets forth the manner in which the IRS requires you to de-termine the value of your donated property. Check out the IRS Publication 4303, “A Donor’s Guide to Car Donations,” at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4303.pdf.

9. How do I contact you to schedule a pick up? Submit the donation form to: Marine Corps League Hiram I. Bearss Detachment, PO Box 2351, Indianapolis, IN 46206-2351; or complete and fax the form to Car Program at 916-631-1328, 631-1308 or 631-4336; or you may email this form to us at [email protected].
