1 From the Helm…. Gary Nasby- Commandant Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 As I write this, 2011 is almost upon us. It has been a fast paced and productive year at Hiram I Bearss, and I hope you all enjoyed the ride. Hold on to your cov- ers as this upcoming year looks to be just as eventful…. Gun shows, monthly BBQ’s, Parades, catering events, VA hospital visits, Toys for Tots, aide and assistance to our local Marines active and in-active and so on. This coming year I hope to finally get the M-1 rifles to get our Honor Guard off the ground (once the hold by DOD is lifted), and there are many ideas on the wish list for im- proving our new home “Marine Barracks Indy”. It is planned to have the Young Marines start an air rifle shooting league at the Barracks, as well as the Gordon Pipers, the Women Marine Association, Marine Riders, and the Marine Foundation of Indiana, all call the Bar- racks home. The Barracks is fast becoming the place to be if you are a Marine, and want to help promote Marine causes. The Detachment will be hosting the MCL Central Division Conference in April (page 8-9) , plan to attend if you can. If you haven’t been to the new Barracks, stop in any meeting night or planned event to wee what the hard work of many Detachment members has produced. The Museum dream of Don Myers is continuing to grow, and our future as a Detachment with a home to call our own is a reality. Everyone involved should be very proud of them- selves. If you have missed out on some of these great things, make a New Years Resolution to become involved and become an active part of the Detachment. You won’t regret your efforts or time spent here, and others will bene- fit from your participation. I hope to see more of you in 2011, and have a great year! RE: Increasing Meeting Attendance & Camaraderie Plan: Pitch In Dinners At the last Staff meeting, it was decided to try and have a “Pitch in Dinner” before the membership meeting each month. These will start at 1800, and end at 1850 just before the meeting to allow for cleanup. Everyone at-tending the meeting is requested to bring a dish to pass that will feed 8 or more Marines. Fellowship and Camaraderie will be the only allowed discussions at these dinners, (save meeting business for the meeting). We have a new building, let’s get some use and enjoy-ment out of it for ourselves. Let’s come to-gether and bond as friend & Marine Corps Leaguers. As always liquid refreshments will be available for a donation. It should be fun, let’s do it! Semper Fidelis…. Gary Nasby
