From the Helm…. Bud Albright- Hiram I. Bearss Det. #089 From the Commandant I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Years.

Back to work now and we have a full schedule coming up. It is that time of year when we begin our election process. We will be taking nominations for office in January and February with elections in March and installation in April. I am stepping down as your com-mandant. I want to take this time to thank all of the members for their support the last four years. It has been a great tour of duty for me and even though I have made some mistakes I feel that our detachment has made great strides forward and if it was not for all of you these things would not have happened. Jim Wade has agreed to be our elec-tion officer this year. If you want to nominate someone for office contact Jim. I will be taking over as quartermaster for Greg Troxell and also will be helping with taking care of the barracks and helping Don Myers with his museum project. A lot of the members visited with patients at the VA hospital during December and passed out small gifts to them. I would like to see us do this every year. Thanks to Diana Ward and Jesus Quintana for setting this up. Also in December the Indiana War Memorial renamed their meeting rooms after three Hoosier heroes of which one of them was none other than General David M. Shoup past commandant of the Marine Corps. It was pleasing to know that the War Memorial committee used one of our nominations (Gen. Shoup) in the renaming process. We are experiencing a surge in new members. Please take the time to help welcome these new members aboard and make them feel at home with us. We would like to have members volunteer as mentors to these new people. If you are interested in doing this contact Gary Nasby or I and we will assign you someone for this project. Our fund raising project for purchasing the building is about 33 % completed. If you have been holding back on donations to this effort please contact one of your officers or Don Myers and get on board and get a plank. We as always need help when we have our monthly BBQ. Thanks to all who help. Even if it is only an hour or so that makes a big differ-ence. I also want to recognize our ladies auxiliary and their friends who have really pitched in and made a big difference in making our BBQ’s a success.
