“This Day In Marine Corps History” : http://www.muddyboots.net/semperfi/history/hist_04.html WINTER BOOK REVIEW BY DON MYERS My American Journey by Gen. Colin Powell, AUS Ret.

An excellent biogeography of one of America’s greatest generals. It is an easy book to read even with its 617 pages. I have greatly admired Colin Powell for his service to our country under presidents from Carter to Clinton. His was not an easy job and I’ve learned from reading this book. I much better understand what it is to be subject to the political aspects of military life. Powell had an interesting life growing up in New York City as a first generation American whose parents came from Jamaica. The only disquieting factors of this book in my estimation is that General Powell was overly concerned in his writings by constantly focusing about the racism that has taken place in the military and our country for over two-hundred years. Part of the reason this affects me (and I understand how it must have been difficult for a black man to deal with overt prejudice) is until I read this book I never thought of Powell as being a “black” general. Indeed, Mar-tin Luther King’s”let a man be judged by his character and not the color of his skin” worked with my feel-ings toward Colin Powell. I would have voted for him in a heart-beat to be the President of these United States, yet he had to point out to me his race. There is only ONE military color – GREEN! A great read how-ever.

SCUTTLEBUTT PLANK PROGRAM ANOTHER PLEA FOR HELP From Donald F. Myers Here’s the straight scoop – our country is in an economic slump. Regardless who’s at fault we’ve had bailouts, government fiscal interference and increased taxation on the horizon? Yet outfits like the Indianapolis Marine Corps League and Marine Corps Foundation continue to about their daily efforts of do-ing good things for our local community, our nation and of importance our Marine Corps. You will find Marine Corps Leaguer volunteers at the VA Medical Center saving the federal government tens of thousands by helping out in most all areas of hospital care for our veterans. The league, through the assistance of the foundation personally takes care of reserve Marines overseas with comfort items and other morale boosting efforts. We also look out for their families back home as well, regardless of what the problem may entail; from fixing an automobile, to buying food, paying rent or helping a family to move. We support the Junior ROTC program at various high schools and sponsor several scholarship programs in ad-dition to the Young Marine program that some say is akin to the boy and girl scouts but with an attitude with an emphases of anti drugs, self-discipline, pride and self-respect. We have members that go into schools and teach children the price of freedom. We teach flag respect as well. I could go on about the good we do all on a shoestring budget. There is no Pork Barrel spending in our organization that is totally manned by volunteers. Please take another look at our outstanding PLANK PROGRAM to help us not only to pay off the building we’re in but also to keep afloat our various programs. If the Plank Program does not fit into your current budget for charitable donations under IRS code 501(3) then at least offer some type of donation to help us to continue our worthy projects. If you own or operate a business, think strongly about a corporate sponsorship. While there are certain rewards for being a Plank Owner the biggest reward is the satisfaction that you put your money into a very worthwhile organization. We’ve got all the help from the “choir” section from the detachment we can – now is the time for other members and associates and friends of the Corps to step up to the plate. (We’re almost 1/3 rd of the way WE NEED A BIG PUSH NOW!)
