PLANK PROGRAM By Don Myers

I’m running out of ideas on how to reach the member-ship to make them understand the absolute need our Ma-rine Corps League Detachment requires to keep us afloat

while at the same time to try and stash some dollars aside for November 2011 when we’ve got to cough up $35,000 or vacate the premises where we are now at.

My effort at both the “stick” and the “carrot” approach has evidently failed since a look at our goal graph printed in this newsletter shows less that 15% participation in the Plank Pro-gram or other donations this past six months of having departed Fort Harrison, a location where things just weren’t working out to our best interest. Perhaps if members would visit the building we’re in now they could see first hand what we are doing to put the Corps in a good light with our fellow Marines; something they’d be proud of. Most Saturdays (0900-1400) the building is always open as is the second and fourth Thursdays of every month (1630-2100). Or, call me or Bud Albright and we’ll open up the place for you personally. Marine Barracks Indianapolis does not have the usual trap-pings of what most veterans post seem to offer. We’re not a bunch of guys hunched over a bar or a group of beer swilling good old boys sitting around in a smoke filled back room carp-ing what’s wrong with the world. No, we’re more family ori-ented where woman and children with their Marines and friends are welcome to visit. Kids, as well as adults enjoy looking over our collection of historical Waterhouse prints that tells the Marine Corps story and viewing some memorabilia that we are beginning to acquire. Oh, there will be time when a group of Marines will sit around a table for a gabfest of sea stories, or share ideas on how to better serve the Young Marines and other worthy pro-jects we’re working on to better the Corps image in our com-munity. And yes, we do have a fridge with soft drinks and other beverages that are free (donations accepted.) Hey Marine– how about getting’ with the program and finding us some cars!

The commanding officer of a regiment in the U.S. Marine Corps was about to start the morning briefing to his staff, battalion and company commanders. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish its brewing, the colonel decided to pose a question to all assembled. He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep. He posed the question of just how much of sex was 'work' and how much of it was 'pleasure? The regimental executive officer chimed in with 75-25% in favor of work. A captain said it was 50-50%. The colonel's aide re-sponded with 25-75% in favor of pleasure, depending on his state of inebriation at the time. There being no consensus, the colonel turned to the private who was in charge of making the coffee. What was HIS opin-ion? Without any hesitation, the young PFC responded, 'Sir, it has to be 100% pleasure.' The colonel was sur-prised and, as you might guess, asked why? 'Well, sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them.' The room fell silent.
