What is an Acolyte?
The acolyte is appointed in order to aid the deacon and to minister to the priest. It is his duty therefore to attend to the service of the altar and to assist the deacon and the priest in liturgical celebrations, especially in the celebra-tion of Mass … He may also, to the extent needed, take care of instructing other faithful who on a temporary ba-sis are appointed to assist the priest or deacon in liturgi-cal celebrations by carrying the missal, cross, candles, etc., or by performing other such duties. He will perform these functions more worthily if he participates in the holy Eucharist with increasingly fervent devotion, re-ceives nourishment from it, and deepens his knowledge about it. There are a few other duties entrusted to the acolyte, such as distributing Holy Communion to the sick, for example. This new ministry is always given to men studying to become priests or deacons, but can also be appointed to ordinary lay men who have no intention of receiving ordination. While the Catholic Church defines acolytes in this official capacity, the term is more commonly used when referring to altar servers and even more specifically, those who carry the candles at Mass. For this reason bulletins on occasion will name an “acolyte,” which may simply mean an altar server who will carry the candles. Regardless, this usage corresponds with the ancient duties of the acolyte that have been passed down over the centuries. Steve Ecord & Jim Rankin respectively pictured here to the right, have been Commissioned & Blessed as Acolytes at the Cathedral on Saturday, November 7.
Let us pray: O God, bless the acolytes of your Church that they may so serve before your earthly altar in reverence and holiness, that they may attain, with all your saints and angels, the joy of serving you and worshiping you before your Heavenly Altar; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Only the First Step
Turning forty brought me face-to-face with my many failures. I’d destroyed my marriage, put my kids in an untenable situation, and hurt people I loved. So when the faith I’d rejected as a teenager started wending its way back into my soul, it was a relief. Nobody else had been able to straighten me out—maybe the Church could do the job. I went to confession, devoured books about the virtues, and became a daily Mass-goer. Life had never felt so focused. Then my friend Tom asked me to coffee. I knew he was a recovering alcoholic, but it had been decades since he had a drink, and he seemed content. However, he told me that he’d recently made his first retreat and was so shaken by a revelation he’d had that he didn’t know what to do next. “God showed me that just stopping drinking isn’t enough.” What he’d realized is that simply “being good” is only the beginning. All the virgins in today’s parable, both foolish and wise, behave appropriately. But the vision of the wise is more -penetrating: they understand their need to be spiritually prepared for whatever comes next. Following the rules is only the first step on a long journey, one that will require all the love and courage they can muster. My moral conversion was important—just as important as Tom’s—but neither of us could stop there. God had plans for us, the likes of which we could not imagine. Paula Huston
