Greetings in Christ,
It’s Lent—a time of renewal! A time of having a
spotlight put on our spiritual life. It’s a time to be more
focused on Christ and dying to self. So, if your daily life
during Lent has no changes, you may be missing out.
Lent is when we strive to imitate our Lord. Of course,
he went out to the desert to pray and fast for 40 days with-
out any food—something we don’t come close to doing.
However, we can and should pray more. We can do things
that help prepare ourselves to commune with the Lord.
Lent is like preparing for an athletic race. And like an
athlete, the Christian during Lent can discipline the flesh
through fasting and prayer— a spiritual workout every day.
We should push ourselves beyond what is easy.
Make a plan of what you could do to prepare for
Easter. Fasting during Lent is critical so that you exercise
the “will” over “want.” Then it is important to think about
giving to others. You can join the parish in giving each
week to the groups St. Vincent de Paul has lined up. The
bulletin has the list for you to use.
You may also consider going to the Lenten Parish
Mission...if you haven't signed up yet. There will also be a
Bible Study starting the last week of March called “No
Greater Love.” I would encourage you to sign up for that.
It takes you through the Passion of Christ like I’ve never
seen before. It’s a powerful study—more to come.
May you have a blessed Lent and grow in your faith!

PARISH LENTEN OFFERING
Our Lenten Offering for the second Sunday of Lent (March 7th and 8th) will be for The Catholic Worker House located at 1310 7th Street in Des Moines. They welcome the homeless as guests in their home. They provide snacks for lunch and meals for dinner served in the evening five days a week. They also provide showers, free clothing, bed-ding, canned goods, and toiletries to anyone needing this service. In the spirit of the Catholic Worker tradition, they are committed to a simple, nonviolent lifestyle as they live and work among the poor. They are committed to the Works of Mercy as a way of life. Let us help this group by our offering of something from their wish list. Remember our Lord’s words to St. Faustina, “I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me.” (Diary, 742) Their wish list includes: Toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, bar soap, dental floss, razors for shaving and shaving cream, and feminine hygiene products; Stocking hats, gloves, scarves, warm socks, and boots; Groceries such as coffee, creamer; laundry detergent, toilet paper, & Kleenex tissue. Also needed are new or gently used blankets. Providing food and aid to those in need are Corporal Acts of Mercy. May God bless you for your loving generosity as you help the Catholic Worker House attend to these acts of Mercy.

Friends,
This Sunday we will send our candidates for entry into Full Communion in the Catholic Church to the Cathedral for a special prayer service with the Bishop. They are participating in the RCIA process. We are grateful to our team who works weekly with our catechumens and candidates. We congratulate them and pray for a full
outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon them all.
Lent has begun and I encourage you to develop a plan for your Lenten observance of prayer, fasting and acts of charity. Join us for daily Mass during Lent, and pray the Stations of the Cross with us on each Friday of Lent at 6pm. Our Hispanic Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 6pm—please meet in the lower church. Please remember to pray for the success of our upcoming Lenten Parish Mission, March 8th, 9th and 10th . It promises to be a true renewal and deepening of our faith.
Have a blessed Lent,
