We always remember the Lord going up the mountain with his close companions on the second weekend of Lent. But today has a different fla- vor from the penance of Lent. Today celebrates how beautiful Jesus is in his risen glory. Do you have a favorite experience or memory of what is beautiful? If someone asked you for an example of what is beautiful to you, what would you say? Would you remember a work of art or a spectacle of nature? My fa- vorite image of what is beautiful comes from an experience at the Ontario Science Center in Toronto. On snowy days during winter breaks from graduate school, I used to spend the day in Toronto's Science Cen- ter. What I enjoyed most were the interactive exhibits. Instead of just reading about the properties of electricity or gravity, you could do actual experiments yourself to see how things work. One of my favorite experiments was in the medical section of the Science Center. The display explained cochlear implants -- how a deaf person could have surgery to regain hearing. There was a video of twin twelve-year- old girls, Tara and Mary, sitting in their living room. The phone rings, but only one twin responds and picks up the phone. The other girl, Mary, has never heard any sound since she was born deaf. The video explains the surgical procedure that Mary is about to undergo. As the video continues, we see the doctors unwrapping the bandages from Mary's head after the surgery. Gently she is given earphones to wear. The doctors then turn on a CD of Braham's Lullaby, and we see Mary hear sound for the first time. At first she looks a little startled. And then her face dissolves in tears of shear joy. And she laughs and cries and bounces up and down with amazed excitement. I could never see that video without tears of joy and gratitude myself -- with Mary hearing for the first time. No matter how many times I returned to the Science Center and saw that video, I always felt the same tears of joy when Mary could hear. Mary's face when she first recognizes sound is my image of what is beautiful. The beauty of her face is like what I imagine the transfigured Lord revealed when he showed his glory to his friends on the mountaintop. What is the reason to remember this beauty? Why are we given the beautiful Lord to contemplate as August begins? Perhaps it is so that we can feel gratitude for all that is beautiful in our lives -- family, friends, good health, or the majesty of the night sky. Perhaps it is so that Daniel's vision in today's first reading can refresh our memory of Jesus. At his transfiguration, at least for one brief and shining moment, Jesus was revealed as the glorious Son of Man, companion of the Ancient One, deserving of dominion, glory, kingship, and the loyal service of all nations and peoples of every lan- guage. Perhaps another reason to remember his beauty is from the ter- rible irony of a former August 6, when the bright light on the horizon came from the atomic bomb of Hiroshima. We remember that before Jesus would be "beautiful to behold" in his resurrection, he had to die on the cross. Then and only then would he be fully revealed as Son. ST IGNATIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH

Beauti ful To Behold

Dear Parishioners:

This weekend the church remembers the Transfiguration of the Lord once again. We always remember the Lord going up the mountain with his close companions on the second weekend of Lent. But today has a different fla-vor from the penance of Lent. Today celebrates how beautiful Jesus is in his risen glory.

Do you have a favorite experience or memory of what is beautiful? If someone asked you for an example of what is beautiful to you, what would you say? Would you remember a work of art or a spectacle of nature? My fa-vorite image of what is beautiful comes from an experience at the Ontario Science Center in Toronto.

On snowy days during winter breaks from graduate school, I used to spend the day in Toronto's Science Cen-ter.

There was a video of twin twelve-year-old girls, Tara and Mary, sitting in their living room.

At his transfiguration, at least for one brief and shining moment, Jesus was revealed as the glorious Son of Man, companion of the Ancient One, deserving of dominion, glory, kingship, and the loyal service of all nations and peoples of every lan-guage.

Perhaps another reason to remember his beauty is from the ter-rible irony of a former August 6, when the bright light on the horizon came from the atomic bomb of Hiroshima. We remember that before Jesus would be "beautiful to behold" in his resurrection, he had to die on the cross. Then and only then would he be fully revealed as Son.

With Peter, James, and John, we are reminded today that the journey of Jesus through the crucible of obedience and suffering is our journey as well. Before our world can become "beautiful to behold," we need to figure out ways to solve conflict without violence. We beg God to help us let go of vengeance and embrace the beauty of peace.

Before we can become "beautiful to behold," our mission is to submit ourselves to the price of love, to the suffering that love demands. Then our face like the face of Jesus will shine with God's radiant beauty.

Exploring the Cathol ic Church through the RCIA Process Are you, your spouse, or a friend a member of another faith tradition but worship regularly

here at St. Ignatius? Are you exploring God’s call in your life and curious about what it could mean to be part of the Catholic Church? If you are, we invite you to consider participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) at St. Ignatius. RCIA offers adults the opportunity to explore Catholic faith practice in a small group setting, and it serves as the gradual process of welcoming new members into the Roman Catholic Church. St. Ignatius will host an RCIA “Open House” on Sunday, August 13th from 9-10:15 AM in the Bradley Room of the Parish Office for all who are interested in learning more about the process. Weekly RCIA sessions begin on Sunday, September 24th (9-10:15 AM) and continue throughout the year as adults prepare to be fully initiated in the church at the Easter Vigil (March 31, 2018). Since the RCIA process involves significant preparation, we encourage all those who are interested to contact Jess Ingman, Pastoral Associate, at [email protected] or 503.777.1491, Ext. 238, at their earliest convenience to discuss the process.

Spring into Action Parish Appeal

Thank you to everyone who has generously responded to the "Spring into Action" Parish Appeal. The deficit shown of $184,000 comes from the need to pay for our expanded mission - our response to Pope Francis and the recent Jesuit General Congregation (GC 36).

Even though sixty new households have joined the parish each year during the past five years, and our Sunday collection is up 8%, fewer gifts and bequests for the parish have been received. This means addi-tional revenue is needed to support our mission. Some households can give more, some less. We ask every-one to do your best to do something. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

The thermometer indicates how close we are to our goal, reflecting contributions to-date from 146 fami-lies. Weekly updates are available at http://www.sipdx.org/spring-into-action.
